AL East: 1. Boston, 2. Yankees, 3. Toronto, 4. Baltimore, 5. Tampa Bay.

Swear on a stack of Bibles, until mere hours ago, I had the Yankees winning their 10th consecutive division title. Then word filtered that they actually are considering Carl Pavano as their opening day starter, and I think I wrenched my back jumping off that bandwagon. Yeesh. You can’t measure a season on opening day, but if Pavano is starting, that’s a miserable sign of what’s down the road for Yankees pitching. Why are you going to Triple-A, Phil Hughes? A Yankees nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Whoo, whoo, whoo.

Scott Miller of cbs sports line. Yanks will not make playoffs

He kisses the Redsox sox backsides. Francona will me manager of the year. Matsuzaka winning rookie of the year which is a good prediction but Matsui clearly should of won in 2003 but didn’t because he played in Japan, I know these are just predictions but he has the Indians making it over the Yankees come on. Cleveland will do what they did last year. The White sox are a better team. This guy is a jerk

Hey Pete is this confirmed from Torre or a “source who does not want to be named” This is exactly what I wanted. Feel bad for Phillips though he was a class act. Hopefully he can latch on to a team in need of a defensive replace first baseman

  3. TurnTwo

Sweet! I was hoping to be at the stadium Pettitte returned. Now lets just hope it doesnt rain…

  4. Todd Drew

    Peter,
Thanks for staying on top of the news. They all sound like good decisions to me.

  5. Ryan

Scott Miller makes me wonder how it’s possible that some people get and are able to keep jobs as sportswriters.

The Yankees will finish 2nd because Pavano is pitching the first of 162 games? Good grief. You can’t make this stuff up.

Pete – seems quiet on the blog today. Didn’t you hope we would here from all the experts who have been ripping Joe about his decision to pick Philips and Villone for the roster. What? He didn’t pick them? Henn and Phelps you say? Well at least he screwed up by sticking with over the hill veterans like Pratt. No? Nieves? With his crappy ST numbers?

    Let’s Play Ball :)

Like the post Rich and I couldn’t agree more

  8. Reality

Exactly Ryan. Pavano is starting b/c it would have been stupid to mess up the rotation for one game — not b/c we don’t have solid pitchers. Now that Papelbon is closing, I for one feel that the rotations are closer than people give us credit for — particularly if Mr. Hughes pays us a mid-season visit.

  9. Russell

    Damnit, pitch Pettitte on Thursday!

  10. rbj

Yup, Carl Pavano pitching the opener, season must be over before it starts. Might as well break up the whole team, fire the manager, trade Phil Hughes. OH, and commit hari kari as well.

Based upon his spring, I am actually expecting Carl to pitch decently on Monday. A quality start.

  11. pat

YES! Andy on Wednesday >:D get to see him!

  12. Bill

I was hoping for Andy on Monday! Would have been very fitting.

  13. EV

I’m confused. They held Mussina back one day (he was supposed to pitch yesterday). Now they are holding him off again so he is pitching Thursday instead of Wednesday. But they didn’t want to mess with his schedule.

    Am I missing something?

  14. Turd

im gonna see igawas, MLB debut, and i think pavano will be fine, yanks win 4-1. end at 106-56 27th title
