Pettitte and Mussina get their work in

Peter Abraham
March
30

Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina each started games over at the minor-league complex across the street. They faced Toronto prospects.

Pettitte vs. Class AA New Hampshire: 4 innings, 7 hits, 4 earned runs, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts. 70 pitches/43 strikes. He retired 8 of the first 10 batters he faced before a rocky fourth inning that included five hits and 34 pitches.

“I was good and gassed,” said Pettitte, who had not faced hitters since March 17 because of a bad back. “But it was a good day; I felt good.”

Mike Mussina vs. Class AAA Syracuse: 7 innings, 71 pitches. I was watching Pettitte and have no further details. But the Moose told us he feels fine.

Mike Myers vs. Class AA New Hampshire: Myers followed Pettitte to the mound and threw 25 pitches in two innings.

well good news Andy didn’t pitch great but he also hasn’t faced live hitters in a good while and it’s good to see Moose pitched well.

  2. Fernando Alejandro

    I hope Mussina was sharp.

  3. saucy

i’ll put my money on 10 pitches per inning thru 7 anytime…

I am waiting for you to say Pettitte is a single A pitcher.

Pete, any word yet on the rest of the BP roster?

    Thanks!

Was Andy Phillips put on waivers yet? I’ve seen in various places that he was, but he played today? please clear this up. thanks

Phillips palyed today, but so did 7 or 8 other designated minor leaguers. I believe the ESPN announcers confirmed that Phillips was sent down and can be signed by any MLB team before deciding to go to Scranton.

    Peter:
Bruney pitched today and his velocity was way down between 90-91 mph. I’ve observed him 4 times in ST and, although he has been very effecitve until today, he has never reached the 96-97 mph of last September.
Is the coaching staff concerned about his decreased velocity or do they feel that Bruney is still building arm strength?

  8. Stormy

Bruney might simply take a while to warm up (and he did miss a few turns in the spring)…

But radar readings mean nothing. You go by results — and he’s been a strikeout machine in the spring. Which means people are not catching up to that fastball.
