Villone to stay with organization?

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 30, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Indications are that the Yankees are trying to find a way to keep LHP Ron Villone. I asked Torre whether he would become a free agent and he said not to assume anything.

The Yankees seem to be trying to convince Villone to pitch for Class AAA Scranton.

He has an out in his contract giving him free agency if he doesn’t make the team. Villone probably needs to see if he has any other options before deciding whether to stick with the Yankees.

Villone left off the roster Peters heart breaks :(

Stash him away in Scranton for insurance and to keep him out of Boston.

I will pay for his train ticket to Boston myself. That’s what we like to call a ‘double bonus’ as Villone won’t pitch for the Yanks BUT will pitch against the team – yeeeehaw!

Just think. If Yanks had been smart enough not to sign him in the first place, they’s have an extra draft pick in the supplemental round to look forward to.

JohnC: thats based upon the premise that he wouldve signed somewhere else, and considering the circumstances, i dont think that was the case.

Just think, if fans were smart enough to realize that no one was signing him to a major league contract by February and they werent getting a draft pick unless that was going to take place

38 is 100% right on this one. Besides Villone could still have value just in case Henn pitches poorly

Exactly PoonNani — Villone would not have taken the Yankees non-guaranteed deal if he could have gotten an offer someplace else

not even that, but it would have to be a major league contract.

it’s possible Villone would take a minor league contract from the yankees over a major league contract from another team, but we don’t know.

it’s possible villone told the yanks “if i can’t pitch for NY, and be close to my family, i’m just going to retire”

he signed a minor league contract 2 or 3 days before pitchers and catchers were supposed to report. did you really see another team signing him to a major league contract at that point? cashman obviously gave him all winter to do that.

Pay him to go to Boston.

he said that he has other contract offers but he wanted to stay in new york. so yes, we could have gotten a pick for him. o well. hopefully he’ll stay in the system, i can’t imagine a team signing him now

It’s the smart thing to do.

When Henn returns to his normal self and walks the ballpark, people will be begging for Villones return.
