A-Rod jacks another

Peter Abraham
April
10

So who catches Hank Aaron first, Barry Bonds or A-Rod? This is getting pretty ridiculous.

If you’re keeping tabs at home, that’s 31 total bases in 26 at-bats. Alex now has 15 RBI in April. He had 16 last April.

He’s at 470 homers for his career. That matches Manny Ramirez for 27th place all-time.

Among active players, only Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr., Frank Thomas and Jim Thome have more homers than Rodriguez.

All he had to do was break up with Jeter and clear his head.

    That man is amazing.

  2. Jeff

Just give him the MVP right now.

    Extend this man, Brian.

  3. JeterMVP

One of the underrated parts of A-Rod’s performance so far is that the anti A-Rod “fans” have to shut up for a little.

  4. kasey

great at-bat by melky. at least he’s still being selective up there. and he didn’t try to pull the ball, which is a good sign.

  5. Rocco

    TRADE MELKY NOW!!!

  6. Paolo

and in the mere mortal department, nice poke by melky to get the run in.

  7. KMT

    How old is A-Rod? 32?

He’s got 6 years of 40+ homer seasons coming assuming he stays healthy. Bonds may get their first, but A-Rod will get there.

    Way to go Melky!

  8. Lori

I really really like that he has caught Manny on the all time list.

  9. kasey

yep, just hand a-rod the MVP right now. and since the yankees wouldn’t qualify for the playoffs if the season ended today, i guess we should all prepare to watch a yankee-less playoffs this october, right?

  10. KMT

kasey, nobodies giving him the MVP yet, but it certainly is an early indication he’s got things figured out.

For A-Rod’s sake, let’s hope he doesn’t pull a Griffey and hit only 100 homeruns his next 7 seasons.

  11. Erick

    KMT,

Just six? Look at Bonds, how old is he? He could DH a couple of years more after that.

  12. KMT

    nobodies = nobody’s

  13. anaconda

People were handing Pujols the NL MVP in April last season as well and then he got hurt — and was later edged out by Howard.

  14. KMT

    Erick:

I was just projecting six seasons for him to catch Aaron. He could certainly go longer than that.

  15. Erick

We might not know about the MVP, but he certainly is looking lieka lock for April MVP.

  16. Macdawg

Looks like underdog is coming to the rescue of the starters.

  17. Erick

    KMT,

I´ll be so proud when my kids, well if I have by then they might not actually understand. But the day he comes to the plate tied with Bonds ready to take the record from his steroid filled hads, I´ll be able to tell someone, yep I cheared for that guy I knew this day would come, and in pinstripes! Another great yankee moment.

With his regimen, he can certainly see that in the distance. Gotta love that guy.

  18. jennifer

and they’ve all been playing longer :)

  19. daysleeper

    Are there still any critics???

  20. jay destro

scott boras is doing the mr. burns “excellent” every time arod jacks one

  21. sunny615

Pettitte looks good. Pitch count is a tad high (39 in two). But he’s definitely effective. 3 stirkeouts already. Just needs to get more efficient.

Arod is just sick. I can’t even begin to describe how nuts his april has been so far. 6 games and he’s already beaten out his totals for ALL of April 2006. (2007 6 hr, 2006 -5 hr (for the month), 2007 15 rbi, 2006 – 16 rbi) I’m sure he’ll double that be the end of april 2007. Sick! sick!

  22. sunny615

And he was 10 feet from another homer. He’s definitely on.

  23. Rey22

What A-Rod has been doing lately is sick sick. And I certainly don’t mean the bad kind of sick.

  24. sunny615

another one of those crazy blog coding things
put a dash in from and behind
    -and you get strikethrough text-

  25. rainbowtrout

Well, one thing’s for sure. The so-so Bobby Abreu (who is not a real number 3 hitter) isn’t the reason for Arod’s early season success.

Pitchers may really start attacking Abreu now. Or giving Arod nothing to hit so they can face Giambi instead.

  26. paul

lets boooo him out of town the next time he strikes out with runners on base, lets boooo a guy with this much talent right out of the city…keep booooooing, and yet with give every other yankee a break, insane…everyone ride the a-rod wagon while hes hot cause in a month from now everyone will be saying how much of a bum he is

  27. hmmm

remember when everyone wanted to trade a-rod? like 3 months ago. like on this blog.

  28. paul

it will be like that if he has any sort of slump this year…he’ll be arod the bum again…its sad but true

  29. sunny615

78 pitches in 5 innings. If Pettitte can get more efficient, he may make 7 innings.

[...] Meanwhile, props to Pete Abraham for posting two great posts during the game tonight. One in regards to Alex Rodriguez and his start to the season and the other about Yankees that actually manage to remain healthy. [...]

  31. greggy

    Pete,
I was at the game tonight. Seriously, how hard did A-Rod hit that ball? That thing looked like it was still rising at 430 feet when it ran into the bleachers. Did you see the same thing from your perspective?

  32. YankeesLuv

Just truly amazing. When you watch him when he is on, you realize you how great he is. This is the best player in baseball. Go Arod!

  33. Jake

Still waiting on the “Trade A Rod” people to speak up. How about the boo’ers? Anything yet???

  34. Brandon

I just want more NY fans to support him especially the Dominican fans and the fans in the Bronx, Washington Heights,…etc… period all over NY , they need to understand how special this man really is when ESPN isn’t making the decision for us, that’s another thing don’t let the ESPNs and Joel Shermans of the world make your decision on Alex Rodriguez he’s ready to tear the league apart, thank you again Kevin Long your offseason work w/ Alex is paying off since the ST he’s been in an unbelievable groove at the plate.

  35. Sam

I think that A-Rod is the best ever, he is my hero and he has influenced my boyfriend to play for the Yankees one day. A-rod,to me, is the best player the Yankees have along side Derek Jeter, I mean the guy has hit 500 HRs, Mickey Mantle was the last person to ever make that record and now A-Rod does it. Man he is the best guy ever and I think that ESPN shouldn’t make the decisions for us when it comes to Alex Rodriquez either. He is the best I don’t care what no one says. Whoever his wife is she sure is lucky cause he is one fine looking man too :) . But in conclusion there really has been a amazing presence when he is at the plate. A-Rod is the man!!!
