Pregame: Yankees at Twins

Peter Abraham
April
10

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Johnny Damon CF
Derek Jeter SS
Bobby Abreu RF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Jason Giambi DH
Jorge Posada C
Robinson Cano 2B
Doug Mientkiewicz 1B
Melky Cabrera LF
Andy Pettitte LHP

Pregame chatter: I’m sure that Melky Cabrera being 2 for 21 will be a subject when we speak to Joe Torre. … The Class AA Trenton Thunder had 17 strikeouts in 12 innings last night. Brent Smith started and fanned six in 5 innings. … Andy Phillips homered for AAA Scranton last night. Ron Villone allowed one run in his one inning setting up Chris Britton.

  1. 2007 Yankees

Melky will be fine by the end of the road trip. I just hate to see “fans” jumping on any player who isn’t putting up numbers. Last time I checked, there was a professional pitcher out there trying to get these hitters out. Things like this happen…just ask Captain Clutch about his slump a couple of years ago

  2. Chris NY

    I couldn’t agree more.

  3. DaaaYankeesWin

Yeah…I agree 100%, 2007 Yanks. Yankee fans are just spoiled and need something to bitch about or else they’ll be left to look at themselves in the mirror, and they usually aren’t too good at critiquing themselves.

Melky will be fine, I know it must suck for some that can’t have an all-star at every position. Including our 4th outfielder.

  4. SJ44

Its all part of Melky’s growth cycle. You are going to have slumps. His defense in the OF makes up for his lack of hitting.

He just needs to stop trying to pull everything. Its a bad habit he got into (probably because he kept hearing how little power he has) and has really lost his stroke.

He ought to look at video of Abreu’s AB’s and look to be that type of hitter.

The Yankees don’t need Melky to hit HR’s. He needs to get back to the type of offensive player he was last year and he will do just fine.

  5. jk

    Trade Melky for Kevin Appier.

Melky will come around. Melky in the Yankee outfield and Bernie at the Beacon works for me.

  6. Chris

That Reyes guy, in A ball, the pitcher, is a guy to look out for. Even though it’s only in A ball, he he really young, I believe he is 19 right now, turning 20 later on in the eyar. Anyway, he struke out 9 of the 10 batters he faced. The kids got some nastey stuff. Hopefully he can continue this.

  7. Matt Waters

Melky relies heavily on hand movement in his swing, a mechanic that occasionally needs tweaks. The slow start doesn’t surprise… start worrying if he abandons his plate discipline. That would be a sign he’s pressing, and straying from his game.

  8. Reflaxion

I have Andruw Jones and Jermaine Dye on my fantasy team. Thus far this year, they’re 4-43, with 5 walks and 14 Ks. So Melky’s performance thus far matches a 2006 MVP candidate and a five-time All-Star.

It’s a week into the season. Sometimes slumps strike early. If he’s hitting like this in May, then there’s a problem.

  9. Jeremy

Villone has become the ultimate AAAA pitcher.

  10. Elb

Peter, I think it would be great if you could post the lineup for the opposing team as well. Although Michael Kay and John Sterling act as if the opponents are the Washington Generals, we should take a broader view on this blog. Many of your constituents are actually familiar with players who are not on the Yankees or Red Sox.

  11. Joe_NH

    Peter.
Can you find out or do you know how Jeter’s neck is doing?
He seemed to be paying alot of attention to it last night.
Sorry if it’s been mentioned already what the problem is, I missed it.
    Thanks!

  12. Andy Hawkins' Ghost

Melky needs to work on hitting the ball solidly. Too many weak dinkers from what I have seen. Hit it square and the hits will come. I agree with the rest, he will be fine. Is he 22 yet?

  13. Jamie

Has anyone ever seen Melky take BP? Man he CRUSHES the ball deep into the right field bleachers.

  14. Rocco

    J Wright 55 pitches, 33 strikes through 4 innings. 0 runs.

Where was this in the playoff vs the tigers last year?!?!

  15. kasey

    mother of god, a-rod.

  16. Ryan

    We’re not worthy!!!!

  17. Gayle

this is just unreal. Even the most supportive arod fans could not have predicted this. Like Flash said the ball must seem like a grapefruit to him

  18. Rocco

    WOW

  19. KMT

    Ding Dong!

    Who wanted to trade A-Rod?

    - KMT

  20. Rock

    wow(arod)

  21. Erick

    He is a man possesed

  22. Chris

Wow. ARod looks like the absolute best player to have ever played the game right now. He’s so locked in, that it’s unbelievable.

  23. jennifer

    arod is locked in!! wow

  24. Brian

    And the MVP goes to….

  25. scott

Abreu didn’t help him tonight, flied out on the 1st pitch…

  26. Rocco

i wonder how long before pitchers start pitching around him and going after giambi…

  27. Erick

April MVP here he comes… for now… if he continues there will be no Big Papi, Mauer whatsama call it debate over the MVP

  28. Dave

Fire Cashman for not locking A-Rod into a 20 year deal.

  29. Mike the Mike

Is he a “True Yankee” yet ???

That true yankee stuff is such bs – anyone agree ?

  30. kasey

let’s wait a while before we hand him the MVP trophy, please.

i’d love to see andy make this lead stand up.

  31. Paolo

    melky would have caught it.

    j/k

pretty cool to watch somebody who’s so locked in.

  32. Jamie

This is just gone beyond ridiculous. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it on Gameday. This is crazy.

    LETS GO YANKS!

  33. Rocco

    i agree Mike the Mike

  34. michael

    Wow Arod

  35. Chris

Rocco, I say the next time he comes up, Bonsor might show him one strike. Afterall, Bonsor only showed ARod two strikes that last at bat, and ARod made that homer seem so easy, like it barely touched the bat but yet was hit 500ft away.

  36. Jimmy

I wonder if we can still trade him for those two AA prospects the Angels were offering.

  37. Erick

    Hey Rocco, your right.

Maybe that´s whats wrong with the Giambino, he comes to the palte with no one on cause A Rod already cleared the bases.

    So he gets no pitches.

  38. Rocco

I want to see them start walking arod so he can steal some more bases like he said he was going to do this year.

  39. Jamie

Instead of him clubbing the ball? hahaha

  40. Lori

I am truly in awe. Of course, doing this in his first at bat, will he get boo’ed if he doesn’t do this again later in the game . . .

And so far so good with Andy.

    (*has fingers crossed*)

  41. Rock

rocco, I want to see some more a-bombs

  42. Jeremy

It seems that ARod is always giving us the lead this season.

I think the “good pitching is contagious” mantra is crap, but Pettitte does need to imitate Pavano’s willingness to induce ground balls and let the infielders take care of them. Like the second and third outs.

  43. Rock

I’d like to see a-rod versus santana right now

  44. JeterMVP

Mike the Mike: YES! If you put on a Yankee uniform, you are a Yankee.

  45. Rocco

I’d like to see more home runs, but *IF* they start walking him with the unintentional intentional walk then I want so see him steal a base or 2… am I asking for too much? It will at least make pitchers think twice about doing it since it’s like just putting him on 2nd base.

  46. Chris

Why would Cano touch Mauer’s and the umpires shin guards?

Is the batter even allowed to do that? If I was the Catcher, I’d be really annoyed at that.

  47. Lori

Yeah Melky! What a confidence booster!

  48. Erick

can you imagine a 40 40 season again? Oh sweet dreams

  49. anaconda

Too bad A-Rod is going to give the Yankee “fans” a symbolic middle finger when he opts out of his contract after the season is over.

These fools treated A-Rod like trash for three seasons and I wouldn’t blame him one bit for leaving.

It has been absolutely embarrassing as a Yankee fan to see these people treating that way and won’t realize how great he really is until he’s gone.

  50. Rock

If he leads them to a world series, I think he’d definitely stay.

  51. Rocco

i’m sick of the AROD leaving comments… just because JD Drew did it and ESPN keeps saying he will do doesn’t mean he will. What other team will give him the best change to get to the playoffs and win the world series *EVERY YEAR*? Why would he leave?

  52. anaconda

So that he can walk outside of his house without his home fans looking for reasons to sling mud at him.
