Three durable players

Peter Abraham
April
10

This from the Yankees pregame notes:

Mike Myers, Johnny Damon and Jorge Posada are three of six active players with 10 years of Major League service time who have never been on the disabled list.

The others are Tom Glavine, Brad Ausmus and Shawn Green.

Glavine has been active for 19 years and 56 days and never been on the DL. That’s impressive.

  1. kasey

pettitte still doesn’t look super-sharp to me.

  2. Brian

Yeah but I saw Glavine play last week then he was out of the line up for the next 4 days. So maybe not so durable after all?

  3. KMT

Speaking of durable…do you think the very fact that there are only 6 active players with 10 years and no time on the DL makes anyone catching Ripken’s record impossible?

    - KMT

  4. kasey

that was a joke about glavine, right brian?

  5. kasey

nice work getting around the leadoff double, though.

  6. kasey

off-topic: pete, what are you listening to lately? it’s been a while since you posted something music-related?

i’ve got the reissued live zevon record, “stand in the fire” going. pretty great stuff.

  7. anaconda

Good pitchers don’t have to be super sharp to get out of jams.

That’s what makes them good pitchers.

  8. Brian

It was a joke Kasey, but thanks for checking.

Some serious durable talk for a moment though. Its taken Andy about 40 pitches to get through 2 innings. Thats when he said he felt gassed last outing. What are the odds of him making it past the 5th tonight?

  9. Chris NY

is anyone else trying to use mlbtv? I’m in boston and it’s saying I’m blocked out (as if I were somewhere local where it’s on regular TV broadcasts, which it’s not as far as I know). I’ve been on hold for 45 minutes, yet to get a customer service rep…

  10. Brian

    Booooo

  11. anaconda

MIN has a lot of free-swingers in their lineup — which is why Pavano was successful last night with a low pitch count.

It only takes one or two quick innings to make up for it,

  12. kasey

is he really at 40 pitches? i figured he was closer to 25-30.

  13. Lori

Yeah, Brian, but it was to the warning track. No wind in the dome.

  14. kasey

man, he IS at 40. that’s nuts. it didn’t seem like he was throwing a ton of pitches each at-bat.

i bet he goes 5, tops, before he runs in to trouble or runs out of gas.

  15. Russell

i hate to be so joyful because the yanks are winning but doug really does save 2-3 runs a game.

  16. Lori

Much better inning that one – only 7 pitches. So at least he’s now in somewhat normal range.

  17. Russell

Pettitte doesnt really seem to be pitching to contact… painting the outside corners. Thats why his pitch count is up.

  18. Max Cooper

what active player has the longest games played streak right now??

  19. anaconda

    Probably Miguel Tejada.

  20. kasey

bonser looks pretty good out there.

  21. Rocco

    Tejada

  22. kasey

that bonser statement is relative, of course. i just haven’t seen much of him. he looks like he’ll be a decent big league pitcher.

  23. Michael

    Miguel Tejada according to Wikipedia.

    He has 1084 compared to Ripken’s 2632.

  24. Brian

Just having some fun with the boos Lori. I actually have to agree with earlier comments that Yankee fans only have themselves to blame if ARod skips town after the season.
What other player hits 35 home runs and leads the team in RBI and gets booed all year? He’d have hit 50 if people cut him some slack.

We may also have another World Series victory if people had supported him and the team in general instead of seeing ther role of the ‘Yankee fan’ as criticizing every minor failure until the players take the field petrified. Is ARod a little mentally fragile? Perhaps, mostly because he expects perfection, and knows everyone else does too. But given that his mental make up is his main weakness why do these fans have to persecute him all season? Makes no sense to me.

Hopefully the fast start will spare him the second guessing this year. Although if he strikes out in his 1st post season at bat after hitting 70 home runs in the regular season he WILL get booed by a large section of idiot fans.

Whew, rant over. I feel better.

Back to the game, I’m guessing Andy goes 6, or 6 and a bit. It’s a nice progression, great to have him back.

  25. Chris NY

since starting this phone call to customer service for mlbtv.com, I have:

    Showered and got dressed.
Walked over to Legal Seafoods and back to pick up my dinner (waited there for 5 or 10 minutes).
    Eaten my dinner.
Listened to 2 innings and counting on WCBS radio.
total hold time so far – 60 minutes.

If this recording tells me “we assure you, assistance is just a moment away” one more time, I might just smash my phone.

  26. kasey

andy got out of another jam. like seeing that. i would guess one more inning from him, two tops.

  27. anaconda

Pettitte has made some good pitches to Morneau tonight.

He had opportunities to drive in runs twice and came away empty.

  28. kasey

i had the mlb.tv package two years ago, went through the same thing. i’d much rather fork over $150 for the extra innings package than deal with the mlb.tv people.

  29. Max Cooper

thanks michael I guess I should just learn to check wikipedia. Is there anything that site doesn’t know??

  30. Lori

I actually agree with you Brian. I too see no logic in booing a player who puts so much pressure on himself to do well, and in fact does well so often. Fact of the matter is that he wasn’t the only member of the team not to perform in the post-season.

So, go ARod! (And Andy . . . and the whole rest of the bums)

  31. Brian

Chris, I think I knw whats happened. You took your phone into the shower. And it died.

  32. Paolo

wow. imagine having to play in an open-air stadium in minnesota in april or october? yikes…

  33. kasey

2-2 with two hits up the middle. atta kid.

  34. anaconda

Playing outdoors in MIN in the Spring is a a lot like playing outdoors in Buffalo or Canada.

They need a retractable roof — it’s not like their billionaire can’t afford it.

  35. Max Cooper

    atta boy JD

  36. Brian

Cool Lori, even if he was only one sucking in post season though, he is a confidence player, needs the fans behind him to break out of slumps.

I think some people feel they would rather see him fail and blame him (booing the bad guy is fun) than support him and celebrate with him. Fans should be with their teams through good times and bad. Players may frustrate you sometimes, but like every guy in the dugout, we should cheer them every at-bat.

Esp. in baseball which is the most confidence based sport in the world.

  37. Chris NY

Kasey, I live in NY so get the games when I’m home. But I’m up in Boston for work, so I have to hope it’s on ESPN or use mlbtv… Does extra innings work through the internet at all?

Brian, I wish that was all that happened. I left it on speaker sitting on the bathroom counter and they damn recording kept going and going and going…

Nice shot Johnny!!!!!!! (sounded good anyway).

  38. kasey

the minnesota announcers can’t figure out why damon wasn’t bunting there.

  39. Ryan

Any chance the Yankees re-think the retractable roof after this series? Wowzers!

  40. kasey

i think the only way extra innings will work via internet is if you have a slingbox.

  41. JeterMVP

If Pavano can be even half the pitcher he was last night for the rest of the season, we’re 1 starting pitcher away from making 2007 the year we make a SERIOUS run in the playoffs.

  42. kasey

what’s andy’s pitch count at, again? gotta be 60’s by now, right? with this lead, he needs to go 6 unless he’s absolutely gassed.

  43. Brian

Good luck Chris, I think they are probably taking a break to watch the game just now. They will answer your call the second it is over.

  44. Lori

Wow – I stepped away from my computer – what happened?

  45. Chris NY

That’s actually what I should do (slingbox). With that, I can get anything I get at home, right?

  46. Rocco

    61 through 4 innings

  47. Anthony

Posada didn’t go on the DL when he got hit in the nose by a throw while sliding into second against the Angels a couple years ago? For some reason I thought he did. He’s definitely had his share of injuries, but I guess he hasn’t been out for an extended period of time on the DL.

  48. Chris NY

Nope, pretty sure he only missed a handful of games, maybe a week.

  49. Chris NY

Hour and a half in and I lost the call trying to check my voicemail while on the phone (3-way calling….). I’m cancelling this crap tomorrow and buying the slingbox this weekend.

  50. Yankees punish Carl Pohlad « Vince’s Rants

[...] Meanwhile, props to Pete Abraham for posting two great posts during the game tonight. One in regards to Alex Rodriguez and his start to the season and the other about Yankees that actually manage to remain healthy. [...]

  51. Jake

kasey is the gloomiest fan since well Gloomy.

  52. Sean

didn’t johnny go on the dl when he had that collission in center field at fenway while he was playing in boston?
