Another night, another rout

Sorry for the delay in posting. Had to escape the Metrodome before the heavy rain started to fall.

A few tidbits for you night owls:

The Yankees have won 25 of their last 33 regular-season games at the Metrodome. … Derek Jeter’s stolen base tonight was No. 250 in his career, one behind Willie Randolph for second place in team history. … According to the stat dudes at Elias, Alex Rodriguez is the fourth player in the last 50 years to have an extra-base in each of the first seven games of the season. The others: Ken Griffey Jr. (1997), Phil Nevin (2001) and Larry Walker (2001).

I’d like to give you a bunch of exciting quotes from the postgame but there weren’t any.

Hear for yourself. Here is some audio from Alex Rodriguez:

and Andy Pettitte:

One of us asked Alex if it was important to him to get off to a good start this season. All he said was, “No.”

No? I mean why wouldn’t it be? You would think that any player in any sport would want to get off to a good start, especially a player who is under the spotlight like Alex is.

What’s happens a lot of times is that when guys are hot, they don’t want to talk about it because they’re worried they’ll jinx it. No athletes are more superstitious than baseball players.

It’s weird, but quite often the best quotes you get are after losses or from players who are struggling.

well then, here’s hoping you get a ton of awful, boring quotes this year.

  2. Billy

A-rod is in the zone right now, it’s gotta be the socks. On that note…Pete, I may have missed this explanation but any particular reason A-rod is going with the high socks this year?

  3. Darkstrand

yeah why have none of you beat writers asked him about his socks?

  4. Global Warming

It’s going to be interesting to see how Moose pitches tommarow.

I really hope he can get his fastball back to 88-89 or else he’s in for a loooooong night.

  5. Brandon

I love the high socks look and the fact that he’s proving to all of baseball he is the best damn baseball player in this generation period. The man is on a mission this year it’s about respect over sympathy and criticism.

Stay inside the ball, see it and hit, listen to Kevin Long if he does all this he will and already is shutting up the hate mob. I also like his batting music it’s the beat representing his old neighborhood Washington Heights, NY.

  6. anaconda

Not necessarily. Moose has had a lot of success against MIN during his career and this MIN team has a bunch of free-swingers.

Moose has won plenty of games in his career without his best stuff and the way the bats are sizzling right now, Moose doesn’t have to be 100% on his game.

  7. Global Warming

I understand about not always having your best stuff, but his start against the D-Rays was putrid. His fastball was 84-85 tops, add that to his 78 MPH offspeed and theres really not much of a difference.

He comes out tommarow with that same fastball and he’s going to get knocked around.

  8. Global Warming

Hopefully though that was his extended spring training and he’s got that arm strength back.

We need the Moose to be Loose. :)

  9. anaconda

I’d bet that he’ll have better stuff indoors than he did last week on the frozen tundra of Yankee Stadium.

  10. SJ44

The high socks by ARod are a tribute to his HS coach, Rich Hoffman. He and Minky, who played HS ball together, wore them one day during the spring when Hoffman came to visit them in Tampa. They decided to make it a year round tribute after that when both played well that day. Kind of an “Old School” tribute to go back to their HS days, play the game and have fun.

Michael Kay made an interesting comment last night on YES after they did a post game and he was kinda brushing them off. Kay reminded us how Paul O’Neil used to brush people off when he was on a streak. You know baseball is a very superstitious sport…

  12. Jake

Is it important to get off to a good start?

What kind of dumb question is that? I feel for these athletes having to sit there an answer these dumb questions. Whats he going to say? “I wished I started 0-26 with 13 K’s. No dummy I want to bat a 1.000 and hit 80 homers and win 120 games. Smarten up.”

  13. saucy

agreed Jake, i was gonna bring up the stupidity of that question.

  14. Stacey

“I understand about not always having your best stuff, but his start against the D-Rays was putrid. His fastball was 84-85 tops, add that to his 78 MPH offspeed and theres really not much of a difference.”

    Are you Michael Kay?

  15. Dustin

Jake – That’s the first thing I thought. Kind of like asking the losing SuperBowl QB, “How do you feel about the loss”?

  16. Chris NY

I’m sure A-Rod’s “No” only meant that it wouldn’t have been the end of the world if he didn’t get off to this hot start. That and/or sarcasm…

  17. hmmm

it wasn’t sarcasm. the question implied if he HAD to get off to a hot start b/c of BS with the media and the fans.

    he said no.

of course he wants to ALWAYS do well, b/c it helps the team win.
