What was Ron Gardenhire thinking? With a good runner on second (Nick Punto) and no outs in a 1-0 game, he has his No. 3 hitter (Joe Mauer) bunt?

What kind of baseball is that?

As an American Legion coach once told me back in the day, when you play for one run, that’s what you’ll get.

Gardenhire did the Yankees a favor. It’s 1-1.

  1. Jimmy the Saint

Why is Joe Mauer bunting? Did Gardenhire have a brain cramp?

  2. rainbowtrout

When was the last time Giambi hit the ball hard?

  3. rainbowtrout

    Nice AB, Cano

  4. SJ44

Last night, the Twins announcers were praising Morneau, last year’s MVP, for hitting a groundball to advance a runner, rather than trying to drive him in.

They do play baseball a little differently in Minnesota.

  5. Angel

I can assure you from experience, they do a LOT of things a little differently in Minnesota, lol

  6. Rocco

    hmmm bad defense tonight :P

  7. SJ44

And, that’s why you play Minky everyday, BA be damned.

  8. Ryan

when was the last time rainbowtrout wasn’t a douche

  9. rainbowtrout

Even if he hits in the .200-.225 range?

  10. Rocco

sure why not? He’s a number 9 hitter. He potentially saved a run there.

  11. Rich Myers

Hey Rich – you see that play at first. Saved a double at least. We don’t need defense like that in a close, low scoring game, do we?

  12. Wolf In Pinstripes

“I can assure you from experience, they do a LOT of things a little differently in Minnesota, lol”

Oh maaaaan, that is just an open door for jokes …. but NO, I’m going to behave. :D

  13. Harley

Hey, did Minky do anything tonight? Ahh, just kidding. And it was a nice play. Might even bring him in during the late innings to do just that.

But with a better stick at the corner? Might not be a low scoring game at all.

  14. rainbowtrout

And, of course, Minky makes an out (and doesn’t even make good contact).

  15. Angel

LOL. Have at it, Wolf. I bet i’ve heard them all. ;-)

  16. SJ44

He’s not in the lineup for his offense. He saves baserunners every night.

No team has 9 .300 hitters in the lineup. He has to play everyday because he makes the pitching staff better when he is on the field.

They have already won this series. They are playing with house money tonight. Minky is not a problem with this team.

  17. rainbowtrout

Way to go Farnsy! So much for the great yankee pen

  18. David G

Our #2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 hitters have o-fers….. and The #8 hitter gets singled out for criticism shortly after making a great defensive play. VERY objective posting.

BTW…. If Doug hits in the .200-.225 range, he should sit unless Phelps is either in that range or a butcher defensively. 8 games isn’t a good sample size, of course…. but, yes, Doug needs to hit better.

  19. rainbowtrout

Yanks didn’t win this kind of game last year, either. They don’t have the “guts” for these situations.

  20. David G

    Oops…left out the #4 hitter….

  21. Dan from Mass

uggghh, farnsworth. didn’t he start the last game with a 4-pitch walk? it’s like watching benitez with the mets.

  22. Rocco

    guys just ignore rainbowtrout

  23. sammy

has Farnsworth worked into his contract that he’s going to walk his first batter on four straight pitches into his contract somehow?

he did that on Monday night, too.
    goodness.

c’mon… we do tend to get a little… overdramatic… in these types of situations on the mound. At least, we have before.

  24. Erick

I’m sorry but it is the AL, no way a nine hitter can go with a 250 average or below. Like Steve Goldman says on Yesnetwork.com, you can’t say that because the yankees are so great offensively in X and X position they can live with a 250 or below player at first.

The lone run that guys saves every 4 days on average never makes up for his not hittng anything and all the pluses in other positions are negated by him.

Maybe an NL team with a pitcher can live with that and have an excuse. But an AL team and in the east can’t stand for lon having zero production at first even if he has a “great glove” which is no longer true. The one run he save every week doesn’t make up for the 4 or 5 that he at least should be pushing home.

  25. jj

    What is with the glasses
reminds me of Charlie Sheen as wild thing

  26. rainbowtrout

What did I tell you. The Yankees do not win low scoring, close ballgames.

  27. Ryan

    Erick,

Then why is it ok for Giambi to hit .250 in the 5 hole? He’s the one we need more production from, not Doug.

  28. rainbowtrout

So the Yanks baby Farnsworth by letting him pitch only every other day and he still stinks.

  29. rainbowtrout

More brilliance from the Yankee pen.

  30. sammy

    well… there… you… go.

  31. Brian

Don’t worry ARod will hit 4 home runs in the 9th.

  32. JeterMVP

Joe Torre: Where were you 2 batters ago?

  33. rainbowtrout

Wow, this Yankee pen is really a strength of the team.

  34. Ryan

Any chance Farny can pull a Kevin Brown and hit something really hard?

  35. Adam

Now I remember why I hate Kyle Farnsworth so much.

  36. SJ44

Yeah, one guy blows up and that means the entire bullpen stinks. lol.

Funny stuff. Last I checked, the Yankees won this series.

But, what does that matter since for some of you, the season ended tonight.

  37. Chris NJ

Maybe Pete was right, we should trade Farnesworth. This guy stinks, we were in the game, the WHOLE game, even WITH SEAN HENN PITCHING 3.0+INNINGS! And then Farnesworth comes in, and then BAM, it’s nearly a blowout.

  38. Erick

If Doug M. can’t hit, we will see a lot of Phelps before long and if his defense is ok and his hitting is ok he’ll stay there.

If he starts to struggle with the bat, Cashman will have to come to a remedy by the all star break. And the silly platoon will day giving the yanks a better bench.

You can’t live with a all glove first baseman and no hits who is actually not even an all glove fist baseman any more in the AL east.

No matter what you say about saving a run once every four games or having great offense on other positions. You negate that plus with Doug M. at first and his saving one run compares terribly with his not bringing home any runs at all.

  39. Nigel

that was horrific. bet we hear a story about farnsworth’s “bad back” causing this.

  40. Rocco

    rainbowtrout….

The Bullpen did fine… FARNSWORTH is the one that gave up all 4 runs… don’t blame the WHOLE pen because farnsworth stunk it up today.

  41. Vito

Farnsworth really is unreliable. He should have been dealt in the off season like Randy Johnson. Honestly, I’d rather have Britton here instead of Farnsworth.

  42. Gibb

I feel like we could get a lot more for Farnsworth in a trade, considering how much people need relief pitching, than he’s given us. This is ridiculous.

  43. Brian

BTW rainbowtrout the yankees pen not only inherited 2 runners who didn’t get a sniff of home plate but then gave up only 1 run in the next 5 innings – which by their standards so far this year, is pretty horrible.

Krazy Kyle is known to be a little erratic sometimes. He’ll be OK though. I’d have hoped for a W but I’m still glad we’re not facing 14 innings here.

  44. Erick

    Ryan,

Because Giambi can hit 250 and have a near 400 on base percentage and can knock 40 plus homers every year.

When did Doug M do that?

  45. rainbowtrout

No, it means the pen is no better than last season. Proctor looks like the same old Proctor before his “hot streak” last year and Farnsworth is inconsistant at best, and an injury-prone head case at worst. Same old story.

  46. David G

    Erick:

Seriously…. 8 games into the season?? I guess it’s time to bench Doug, Giambi, and Melky, none of which are hitting above the Mendoza line. Is that where you’re going with this (I don’t think so, but some posters here want something done NOW) ??

    Again…. give it time.

Yes, it is painfully obvious that a player GIVEN A DECENT AMOUNT OF AB’s should be benched if not hitting.

  47. Dan from Mass

if nothing else, farnsworth is a good guy to keep around in case of a bench-clearing brawl . . .

  48. Gibb

the bullpen (without fansworthless) has been pretty sick this season. i think they’re much better than last year. i can’t remember when counting on the bullpen to keep us in the game.

  49. SJ44

Why is Josh Phelps all of a sudden the “answer” offensively?

The guy is a Rule 5 guy who has never been much of a hitter.

If Minky hits .250, its enough, AL or not.

This team is going to score over 900 runs this yr. They need somebody to make plays in the field. Minky is that guy.

This “horrible” team just won 2 of 3 in the Metrodome, a place where last year, at this time, they stunk out the joint.

Tonight was a nice they had to piece it together because Moose got hurt in the 3rd inning and they almost got away with it.

You can’t win every game and I will be more than happy to take 2 of 3 each series.

Farnsworth stunk tonight. That and Moose’s injury are the only things to put a damper on this series. Overall, the Yankees did what they had to do in this series and now its onto Oakland.

  50. JCR

    game over… thanks Kyle

  51. Pittsburgh Yankee Fan

The bullpen is light years better.

Farnsworth, watch your back for Humberto Sanchez by midseason…you’ll be lucky to pitch in the 6th if you keep the inconsistency up. It’s early in the season so you get a pass tonight.

They don’t really need Proctor, but he will come around.

  52. rainbowtrout

Sanchez won’t be healthy for more than a few weeks at at time.

  53. Rocco

    Giambi Grand Slam to tie?

  54. rbizzler

    Hey Trout,
how did your boys in Boston do tonight? King Felix handed it to them on National D-Mat Day. Enjoy your evening.

  55. Captain241

Note to Torre the next time dont wait until its 5-1 to take the head case out. You dont wait until he gives up 4 runs. He hasn’t earned that respect. After the lead off walk it was time to get someone up.

  56. JCR

So taking 2 out of 3 and the Dice-K loss leaves a good feeling tonight

  57. Erick

    David G,

I never said anything about Giambi or Cabrera. Giambi can hit 250 and get on base on a 400 clip. Cabrera is young, needs at bats and will come around.

Doug M won’t, he hasn’t for years. His defense has been going done and is pretty much reputation more than ability now. Last year with Kansas did bring him out of his down ward spiral, but everything is going against him.

A platoon at fist makes the yankees have no bench. And a bad hitter, who is likely to be that all year and won’t hve an at least average OBP is a killer on the east.

I’m not panicking or being a fatalist. I can’t stand comments like trout’s, but in this case it’s the truth. If a miracle happens and he hits 280 with the yanks and at least a 350 OBP i’ll apollogize. Be ready for a Cashman solution by the all star break.

  58. xryanx

    SJ44,

It’s not that they lost. It’s the fashion they lost in. None of the hitters tonight made Ortiz labor. They looked like they had the attitude of ‘We won this series already and have an off day tomorrow, screw it’.

I’m also tired of Farnsworth. Even though it’s early in the season he seems to be the same Farnsworth of last year. If this is what Farnsworth is going to contribute I’d rather trade him and have Britton (younger and cheaper) pitching in his spot.

  59. Jeremy

With the major exception of Prof. Farnsworth, the bullpen was awesome tonight. Again.

    ARod cannot be denied.

  60. rainbowtrout

Just start Giambi at 1B, have Melky play LF and Matsui can DH.

Minky plays solid D, but his bat is so far below average, that it doesn’t even out.

  61. Dave

Farnsworthless strikes again – does he have any control whatsever over his own arm? Dont walk the lead off batter in a tied game should be a rule of thumb. We started off with six capable starters and now we have three. How many yankees are disabled due to a hammy injury? How bout some conditioning in the off season? Ohlendorf better be ready to make his debut cuz we are running out of options and I think most ppl agree Igawa’s starter spot may be very iffy if he doesnt start showing something real soon. I want RJ back!

  62. Ryan

Giambi is such a shell of what he was when they signed him.

  63. xryanx

Giambi has been horrible lately but he’s been solid the past two years. Give it a rest you moron.

  64. xryanx

    Dave,

Johnson is currently making starts in the minor leagues. Exactly how would he be helping us right now?

  65. Dave

Britton is in the minors and had the worst spring of almost any yankee – what makes u thinhk if farnsworth is gone, Britton will be our set up man?

  66. David G

    Erick—
Are you aware Doug hit .283/.359 LAST SEASON??

.359 matched his CAREER OBP…. no miracle.

  67. Jeremy

    Ryan,

Sadly, that’s true. Amazingly, he’s still one of the best hitters in the league.

  68. Jeremy

Too bad for Henn. This is the second time he did a great job in long relief and got nothing to show for it.

  69. rainbowtrout

Why shouldn’t Bruney be the main set-up guy?

  70. JCR

    Hey Pete,

I think Ron Gardenhire was counting on the mighty Farnsworth, that was he was thinking

  71. xryanx

    Dave,

I don’t know about you but I think a better way to measure a players success in the majors would be to look at his numbers in the majors. If you look at that you’ll see Britton was pretty good for Baltimore last year in about 53 games. But I guess using meaningless Spring Training numbers could work too.

  72. Ryan

“Giambi has been horrible lately but he’s been solid the past two years. Give it a rest you moron.”

That makes me a moron? Giambi’s the second highest paid player in baseball and probably won’t get above .260. With him it’s either feast or famine. This is probably my frustration of drafting him to my fantasy team.

  73. Dave

Johnson is going to be back in a week – he is taking rehab starts from his back surgery which everyone knew he would have to do. The fact is every one was saying we were deep in the starting rotation and didnt need johnson. Now that we have three starters left – one of which has yet to prove he can be effective, I feel like it wouldnt be so bad to have an extra pitcher who is capable of throwing 200 innings coming back right now. Id rather have Johnson who is one yr removed from a sub 4 era and a healthier back after his surgery than rasner or ohlendorf as our fourth guy.

  74. xryanx

So he sucks because he doesn’t hit for average? You’re ridiculous right now. He’s hit 30+ HR and has had an OBP over .400 for the past two years.

  75. rainbowtrout

Ohlendorf? Did you see the stats from his first AAA start?

  76. sunny615

Well, the yanks seem to hit ortiz well, but just didn’t get into any holes. Now I know what the other team feels like when they go up against Wang. Just unlucky today. Giambi had several chances to get the yankees back into the game, but blew all of them. Hopefully he’ll find his stroke soon. Farnsworth was… well… horrible.

    On to sweep Oakland!

  77. Jeremy

    Jason Giambi 2005 OPS+: 156
    2006 OPS+: 154

That’s good hitting. Yes, he is also badly overpaid.

  78. Erick

Yeah last season was a spike in a downward spiral like I said, if he does it again I’ll apologize. But it’s incredibly likely he won’t and experimenting to see if he can helps no one.

A plus on other positions shouldn’t be an excuse to allow minuses on 1B. You should have at least average so that those pluses count.

I’d love for him to do what he did in Kansas after being bad 3 consecutive years and having his defense come down. I’m not panicking, it’s simple truth.

He hadn’t played in over 90 games since 2003. You’ve seen what a hindrance it is on the bench to have a platoon, look at the injuries and ho limited the yanks are late in games with substitutions.

This is patch work until they find something better.

The Yanks are going to be great, they could be even better with a better solution at first and a deeper bench. There is no need to risk it.

If he was in minesotta form you wouldn’t hear me complain, chances are he wont be even close to Kansas form.

At least he comes cheap and gives the Yanks breathing room until they find something else.

  79. Will

Pete…please ask Torre why he would leave Farnsworth in to allow 4 runs when it was fairly obvious from the first batter that he had nothing. With Jeter, Abreu and Arod coming up, keeping the damage to a minimum should have been a priority. Instead, Torre just left Farnsworth in to toil. More astute managing would have given the Yankees a better chance to win. I really hope one reporter is willing to ask Torre why he let this one slip away.

  80. David G

    Erick—

Honestly, I might be able to buy the “reputation more than ability” bit if I didn’t watch him play A LOT last season (take a wild stab at who my 2nd favorite team is and perhaps you’ll understand).... that word had gotten around, but it was inaccurate in 2006. I didn’t watch him much at all in 2004 or 2005…. and I’ll wager you didn’t watch him much in 2006.

What we’ve seen thus far this season isn’t “reputation”. Reputation can’t be seen.

I don’t expect him to hit .283, I predicted the .270 range heading into the season and will stick by it. In his worst seasons, his OBP has remained acceptable. He CAN hit, but it isn’t guaranteed. Again, 19 AB’s isn’t the time to judge.

  81. JeterMVP

We now only have 2 starting pitchers we can turn to with any reliability and one of their names is Pavano. A little scary…

  82. Dave

xryanx Britton is very very far away from being our eighth inning guy – next on the list is proctor or vizcaino – not Britton. I know Brittons stats last yr but he is in AAA right now. Thas how much trust Torre and the yanks have in him. If farnsy was to leave which he wont because no one is taking that ridiculous contract for a mediocre pitcher, Britton would not be the eighth inning guy. Be realistic here.

Where are all the cashman defenders now that we have three starters that are still healthy in the middle of april. What can cash do to improve our rotation now. Thas right nothing. And all those starting studs in AAA arent ready yet to come up. This is exactly the circumstance i was talking about all summer when cash was thinning out our starting rotation. And of course clemens and Hughes arent coming to save the day right now- no one is coming. I just hope the yanks can crawl thru the rest of april until wang and Karstens are ready to come back without falling to the floor. I cant believe we are stuck relying on Igawa and pavano to get us thru the next four weeks or so. Thanks cash for ur idiotic work.

  83. Erick

    David G,

I hope your right, I won’t bet on it, but I hope so.

I am sorry Kansas is your second favorite team. Hope you can at least celebrate a ROY this year.

  84. Sally

Kyle Farnsworth sucks tonight…that is all.

  85. Keith R.A. DeCandido

The one-run strategies line originally came from Earl Weaver, actually. And he was absolutely right, and it’s why his Orioles teams were so good. They played for three-run strategies….. grin

  86. Andrew

    Hey Dave,

You can toot your own horn now, but no one can predict hamstring injuries. Everyone – young (Wang, Karstens) and old (Mussina) can get them. Cashman is an amazing GM because we STILL HAVE GUYS IN THE ROTATION after THREE PITCHERS GO DOWN WITH HAMSTRING INJURIES. Not many teams can say that. The Yankees can, and that’s why Cashman is an awesome GM.

    Thanks, and goodbye. You’re a grade-A idiot.

  87. JeterMVP

To those bashing Minky’s defense: have you been watching? He’s saved our asses multiple times already in big spots and it’s only 8 games in.

  88. David G

    Erick—
Of course this is patchwork. I have yet to see any calls to give him a 5-year extension…. or even a 1-year extension. Phelps is also a band aid solution. I thought those facts were quite clear.

I don’t see the need for griping at a 1-year $1.5 mil. deal that can EASILY be cut if things don’t work out….. nor do I see the reasoning behind some declaring Phelps is ready after what, 41 major league games at 1B??

Both are journeymen…. and neither will be the downfall of the team, yet I see Mientkiewicz CONSTANTLY get ripped. I simply don’t understand the reasoning behind such things. If he’s benched, he’ll still be a GREAT defender (keep in mind this is from what I’ve WATCHED, not read….big difference).

IMO, perspective is needed. For example: risk factor, Igawa vs. Mientkiewicz. I don’t mind a roll of the dice on Mientkiewicz and Phelps. The FA market last season was HORRIBLE. Yes, a trade near the deadline can always be made if needed, but BEFORE coughing up pitching prospects, as the market dictates, why not give Mientkiewicz and Phelps a shot?? Beats the hell out of Wilson/Phillips…. poor offensively AND defensively, right??

  89. rainbowtrout

    Who’s bashing Minky’s defense?

The question is whether his defense makes up for this total lack of offense.

And with the status of the Yankee rotation, they’ll need to score runs, and lots of them.

  90. Erick

Villone gave up a double to score the winning run down in Scranton, don’t be on seeing him soon anytime soon. Henn’s been great and if teams believed Villone still had life after Torre crippled him last year they would have signed him as a free agent or at least after sping break.

I hope he can recover, it’s terrible and unfair, it’s not his fault he was a tad overused, yet it can affect the rest of his career and contracts.

  91. Rich

    I have

  92. Dave

Cashman is a moron – we still have guys in the rotation. It consists of Pettitte who cango down with an injury at any time and almost didnt want to play this yr because he thought he was too injury prone. Igawa who has yet to prove he can pitch in the majors and most scouts claim that he is a fifth starter at best. And we have Pavano who has won one game in over two yrs. Then, there is rasner and god knows who else. Probably someone who isnt ready to pitch in baseball. I cant wait until cash is fired by the yrs end. Who signs a lefty reliever for 45 grand anyway? We also let go of a hall of famer as our sixth man and very decent backup plan to get vizcaino and some guys who arent ready for the majors and prolly never will be. Now that we need a backup plan we dont have one because cash traded him away for almost nothing.

  93. Rich

If Cash is such a moron, what would you have done, genius?

  94. Erick

Cash is great, I’d rather see him than pretty any other GM, there are only a few on a similar talent level to his.

You can’t add 20 million every year, you can’t have hall of famers everywhere. There are probably 20 teams that would love the Yanks problems right now.

  95. Angel

Geez, talk about hysterics. Dave is working himself up into an ulcer.

  96. David G

    David G,

I hope your right, I won’t bet on it, but I hope so.

I am sorry Kansas is your second favorite team. Hope you can at least celebrate a ROY this year.

    ***********************************************************************

They’ll play hard. They’ll be better than last year. Beyond that, I can’t say much. David Glass is the worst owner in baseball, but the likes of Greinke and Teahen are fun to watch.

    Grudzielanek is a pro’s pro, too….

From the take it or leave it department, I met some Royals players in January. Teahen (RF this season, but 3B in 2006)was one of the players in the caravan. If you heard what Teahen told me about Mientkiewicz’ defense…. and, more importantly, saw the look in his eyes as he spoke, you’d trust me that Doug’s D is alive and well. Keep in mind that is coupled with what I saw last season….. not just words.

KC is a DISTANT 2nd favorite….. I’ve followed them since they had an actual rivalry with Nettles (my boyhood idol, FWIW), Gator and co., but couldn’t bring myself to root for any team BUT the Yankees until KC’s “faithful” (for lack of a better word) almost completely abandoned them. There is no way I’d ever make things up about how well Doug played D last year. Surely at least that last line can be trusted. I understand skepticism with his offense….that’s a given…. but take my word about his D.

  97. Jb

The pitch selection from Kyle Farnsworth was awful. I don’t get Why He keeps throwing fastball with exception of striking out Punto with a slider. Joe doesn’t know how to manage the bullpen. Put Myers First and pitch to Castillo, Mauer and Punto.

  98. xryanx

I don’t have a problem with Farnsworth being in there. He’s apart of the setup core and it’s his job to get those outs. I have a problem with Proctor pitching after an poor performance last night while Bruney just hangs out on the bench.

  99. Erick

    David G,

Know what I can’t stand? Small market teams complaining about payrolls and get fat checks from MLB thanks to teams like the Yanks and BoSox and Braves and the rest of them. Then they take that money and put it in their pockets and they don’t develop the team.

Think how much better KC and others might be if owners were actually willing to invest on them the money they get from revenue sharing and luxury taxes.

Owners like the one in KC should have teams taken away or something. You shouldn’t be allowed to run franchises to the ground.

  100. David G

Hypothetically, let’s say Phelps gets a shot starting Friday. Can he be given more than 19 AB’s before calls are made to dump him?? I hope so….. but only time will tell.

  101. Erick

Hypothetically they both deserve a chance, I agree. But there is this feeling in the back of my mind the longer the chance they get, the more damage they cause the team.

I have nothing to base it on, just gut feelings. I am optimistic about many things, including Igawa, the platoon just not so much so.

They deserve there chance, but while they get it, look for a get out of jail card Mr. Cash, just in case.

  102. David G

    David G,

Know what I can’t stand? Small market teams complaining about payrolls and get fat checks from MLB thanks to teams like the Yanks and BoSox and Braves and the rest of them. Then they take that money and put it in their pockets and they don’t develop the team.

Same here. It’s all BS. Ewing Kauffman (R.I.P.) didn’t have problems fielding competitive teams. David Glass is a piece of….....

You’ll love this: I joined a Royals site, just to occasionally keep an eye on. I INSTANTLY had the privilege of butting heads with KC fans crying about payroll. I know the score….. competitive teams draw fans. Owners like Glass are only concerned with lining their pockets.

You know whats amazing about all this angst, hysteria and tearing to shreds of the team. Not one person acknowledged that perhaps Ortiz just pitched decently enough tonight. The yankees were held to one run, after all. It happens sometimes, that gasp the other team just happened to play better than you. Its not like the other team isn’t out there trying to win the game too. The Twins have a good hitting team.

i really think that farnsworth is not the guy for this team, i think that he doesn’t have the nerves for big situations, remember what happened to atlanta two years ago when he was the closer, he blew the whole oportunity for the braves to succeed, but i think that there is time to trade him, he’s other version of tanyon sturtze blowing every oportunity, try to find some one like zumaya or donelly when he was with the angels, cuz he is with red sex and matter of time that he becomes a total crap in that team

  105. JeterMVP

Yes it does at this point. He’s been making solid contact and working up the counts. Balls are bound to fall sooner or later.

They deserve there chance, but while they get it, look for a get out of jail card Mr. Cash, just in case.

Agreed. Don’t look for a “No, I don’t want Teixeira, we have Doug!!!”-type comment from me…. that will never happen.

Sadly, some (not you) are incapable of uttering a positive word about Mientkiewicz…. and some will be incapable of uttering a positive word about Phelps. There wasn’t even CLOSE to a sure bet in the FA market…. the lower the risk, the better. Cashman will always look for ways to improve the team. I’m worried about our rotation now…. the rest later.

  107. Donatello Giannini

    Trout,

Have you no spine? I have not seen you respond to a single blog with any backbone. You never answer questions directly asked of you or your team. No, instead you come on here and throw your worthless two cent opinion out there, attacking individuals yet tucking your tail to anyone that directs anything at you or your “amazing” BoSox. If you feel the need to attack a team look no further then your own team. Their problems are much worse then our Yanks’ problems. Perhaps a bit of class once in a while, or if you are not capable of that then borrow a spine from somewhere.

    Angel,

Ortiz hasn’t been a good pitcher for his entire career. The Yankees beat themsleves tonight by allowing him to keep his pitch count ridiculously low. If they would’ve treated him the same way they treated Ponson and Bonser (make them work, look for mistakes) they would’ve clobbered him. Tonight they looked like a team content with 2 of 3 and that isn’t acceptable to me as a fan.

The way I see it, the worst that can happen is it goes on for one year. Cause next year something just HAS to develop out there.

I’d love for it to be Duncan or Miranda, but I won’t keep my hopes up. It will most likely come from the free agent market or the winter meetings.

One year patches until better options show up sure do suck. No matter the position.

I sure love being a spoiled yankees fan. For all the complaining fans on other teams make, they’d love for their team having Yankee type problems and Yankee type solutions.

  110. Jeremy

xryanx is right, the bottom line tonight was that we let a terrible pitcher beat us. We should have scored more than 5 runs.

  111. Vito

Farns – trade him to a team that needs a closer, could probably get a decent prospect arm for him or maybe an IP eater vet starter. Bruney takes over his role, Britton or almost any other reliever in Scranton can be called up to fill Bruney’s role.

Giambi – always starts slow – will got nuts in June/July like always and carry the team for a month

EyeChart – give him a month on the hitting. His D is why he was signed

relax people – the season is a week old. We have depth and we have $ for making a deal if need be.

  112. Angel

Even formerly terrible pitchers can have good games.

Well said. Duncan is young enough, but I can’t even attempt to predict how he’ll do this season.

If Cashman feels good about a trade, he’ll pull the trigger, but I don’t want to see panic moves made in April…. and, even if I did…. it wouldn’t happen.

Losing Moose is horrific at this point. Tough for me to worry about much else. Perhaps Igawa can show progress Friday…. I don’t like the odds, but won’t rule it out.

Formerly? The last two years his ERA+ have been below 85. 100 is average. If the Twins had beaten us with the Yankees being smart hitters tonight you would hear nothing out of me. Example:

ARod doubles in the 9th, second and third for Giambi with one out. What does he do? Swings at the first Nathan offering and pops it up. Abreu, Damon, ARod, and Jeter were the only ones who had good ABs tonight.

  115. Angel

Formerly. I believe thats what you called him.

I’ve seen enough baseball games to know that one thing happens randomly:- every dog has his day/s.

On a whim last Labor Day I went to RFK to see the Nationals take on the Cardinals. Ortiz was the pitcher and carried a no-hitter into the ninth.

In the bottom of the eighth he even hit a home-run (385 to left center – a good poke). But the long bottom half of the inning probably caused him to lose his rhythm and he gave up a hit right away in the top of the ninth. Then he gave up a monster blast to Pujols (second deck, center field).

So he has his moments of brilliance, but is otherwise just a solid starter. Last night though he was definitely in the driver’s seat.

I don’t know how old your American Legion coach is, but I believe that it was Earl Weaver that first said, “if you play for one run, that’s all you’ll get.” He absolutely hated giving away an out. He also said, “they only give you 27 outs so you better not waste any of them.”

Of course, I could be wrong.
