No DL for Mike Mussina

Peter Abraham
April
12

Just got off the phone with Brian Cashman. He said that Mike Mussina was at the stadium in Oakland today to receive treatment on his hamstring. He has not been placed on the disabled list.

Cashman believes that Mussina will likely miss only one start then return to the rotation.

This is significant news in that Cashman almost always takes the doomsday scenario when it comes to injuries. So it does appear that Moose’s injury is not that serious. I’m sure this comes as bad news to you “fans” anxious to declare the season over.

Sorry for the gap between posts but I had to connect through Denver and the flight here was late, rented a car, you know the drill.

Not much else to tell you at this point. Here is the rotation for the Oakland series:

Friday: LHP Kei Igawa (0-0, 12.60) vs. RHP Dan Haren (0-2, 0.69), 10:05, YES

Saturday: RHP Carl Pavano (1-0, 4.76) vs. RHP Joe Blanton (1-0, 3.97), 9:05, YES

Sunday: LHP Andy Pettitte (1-0, 1.64) vs. RHP Rich Harden (1-1, 1.38), 4:05, YES

i hope that good news about moose sticks. as we all know – and it’s been repeated here several times – hamstring injuries are usually a minimum of three weeks. so, hopefully they got to this before any real damage was done. it’ll throw off moose’s precious schedule, and probably lead to 1-3 pretty shaky starts, but it’s better than losing him for a month and a half.

i hope cashman’s making daily calls to the hendricks brothers’ office.

  2. Christina

Good to hear about Mussina. Weather out there must be beautiful, the Yankees are lucky they escaped this mess of a weekend.

  3. Todd Drew

Excellent news on Moose! Enjoy your off night, everyone.

    Pete:

If I had just gotten off a late flight, rented a car, checked in, and called Cash I’d be at the hotel lounge figuring out where I was going for dinner tonight over an ice cold beer. I would not, repeat not, be posting to a blog. You are an inspiration. Now go get that beer.

  5. kasey

check out haren’s ERA and W/L record. that’s nuts.

  6. murphydog

    Kasey:

It’s still early in the season and numbers can look amazing right now. Expect a regression to the mean. He had ERA of 4.12 last year and PECOTA has him projected at 4.08 ERA for ‘07. He has Avg. BABIP over last three years of nearly .300 and his WHIP is around 1.25. Jeter, Cano and Minky have great numbers against him.

  7. Vinny from Queens

Geez Imus got fired by CBS? Where have I been?

  8. Eric

Thanks Pete for the news – well it looks like 2 out of 3 this weekend – not so much due to Igawa as Haren

  9. Vinny from Queens

Sorry about that for some reason this looked like a political blog.

  10. kasey

    murphy,

yeah, i’m pretty sure haren’s ERA isn’t going to stay at 0.69 this year. i was just saying he must have been on the end of a couple of hard luck losses.

  11. jk

Pete, do you stay in Oakland or San Fran?

  12. Rajah of Rehab

King Felix beat him the first game, in a shut out. The 2 runs scored on Haren were unearned. It was opening day, so both pitching staffs left with 0.00 ERAs. Not sure about his second game, might’ve been the 2-1 loss to the Angels.

  13. jennifer

hey pete can’t the journal news spring for a direct flight?

Great news on Mike. He sounded fairly upbeat about it, good thing he’s smart enough not to push it and got out before it could get worse.

  14. kasey

yeah, i was at the opening day game. bobby crosby committed two errors, if i recall.

  15. kasey

by the way, felix has thrown 17 innings so far (225 pitches), allowing 0 runs on 4 hits, striking out 18 and walking 3 (i believe it’s 3, could be 4).

however, thanks to today’s rainout, the game i’ve got tickets to tuesday will be jeff weaver, instead of felix, who was scheduled to go. son of a…

  16. murphydog

    kasey:

You’re right on the money. In Haren’s two prior starts he’s given up 6 runs but only one was earned.

  17. randy l

has anyone else dreamed about king felix becoming elible for free agency in three years when he’s only 25? he’s going to have three years in after this year. matsuwhowho?

  18. Billy Mo

Hey Pete, going to McAfee Coliseum must be an aesthetics drag. You’ve probably seen games at a majority of big league stadiums, any favorites come to mind? Anyone else want to jump in on this one?

  19. gloomy

Mussina is done, the Yankees are better off without him, they should DL him, bring up Hughes.. and not allow Mussina to come back until he’s throwing 91mph again…. and Torre should be ashamed for not doing a good enough job of allowing Mussina to build arm strength in spring training.

  20. Mike

    randy l:

I’m afraid that’s not the case. He didn’t debut until August of 2005, so he’ll only have two and change years of service time after this year (one year of service is 172 days). He won’t be eligible for free agency until after 2011.

  21. It was a good idea, in theory at River Ave. Blues

[...] Not that it really matters, anyway. Pete Abraham is reporting that Mike Mussina won’t hit the DL. This, of course, means that we’ll be seeing Darrell Rasner once more. I’d be less concerned about that if the start wasn’t coming against the Injuns. [...]

  22. gloomy

the yankees are a giant mess, i’m enjoying watching the mets more this season… and I hate the Mets! but i like pitching and they have it!

  23. rainbowtrout

    Rasner against the Injuns, huh?

    That’s not a mismatch…

That’s pretty much just tanking the game.

  24. rbizzler

I actually love the Coliseum. The place is a hole but you can’t beat good, cheap baseball. But for aesthetics Safeco in Seattle, Camden Yards, AT&T Park and Wrigley (of course) are all worthwhile visits. My goal is to make it to Pittsburgh this year as I have been meaning to check out that park.

  25. murphydog

Felix won’t hit FA for a while, but he’ll be arbitration eligible.. do they try to lock him up before that?

  26. randy l

    mike:
like i said i was dreaming. king felix was amazing last night. i saw a line on a red sox blog that was a good one. it said “their phenom was better than our phenom”.
how about trading the whole yankee minor league system for him minus hughes? one player isn’t going to get the mariners over the top. just kidding folks. sort of.

  27. Colin

So you figure we lose to Haren, we can probably pull of a win against Blanton even though Pavano is pitching. Boy, Andy and Harden will be one tough match up

  28. jk

The Coliseum is Shea Stadium West. No thanks.

  29. Billy Mo

Hate the Red Sox but Fenway Park is as good a place as any to catch a game so long as you don’t have to use the bathrooms there which are usually horrendous by the end of the first inning, even by ballpark standards.

  30. murphydog

We look like losers on Friday, but if Iggy regains some composure, I’ll take that. Saturday looks like a good day for patience. Big Joe Blanton ran out of gas early in his last start so if we look at a lot of pitches, maybe we get him out of there early. On Saturday Pavs could ground ball the A’s to death and keep us in the game and give us a chance to win it.

As for Sunday, this is unfair but it’s a game I’m really counting on Pettitte to win, especially if it’s the rubber game of the series. We’ll need him to go up strong against the tougher pitchers this season so he might as well start now. It’s not a must win for Andy, but he needs to flash his A game. If we take the series at their park it’s a big win. Remember, first we get to .500, then 10 games over .500, etc.

  31. Gayle

Since it is a day off and nothing on TV tonight switched to ESPN classic which aired the Top 5 reasons you cant blame Grady Little for the 2003 ALCS. The best was reason #5 the Curse of Don Zimmer seeing that old footage of him as sox manager then the fight in 2003 with recounts by pl;ayers like Petitte, Clemens was great. Brought back some good memories.

  32. Justin

The airport in Denver is the absolute worst. I have never been on time getting out of there. Good luck.

  33. steve

anyone see hughes pitch tonight ? he didn’t do to well … its only his 2nd start in AAA … i’m not worried

  34. pepperdine

Sending some love Haren’s way but praying the Yankees send him packing in the first.

  35. anaconda

Let’s not start handing out victories to any team simply because of the starting pitching match-ups.

I recall last season when the Yanks travelled to Toronto and two rookies by the names of Karstens and Rasner faced off against Roy Halliday and AJ Burnett and the Yankees won both games.

A lot more people would be winning big in Vegas if predicting outcomes of baseball games were that simple.

  36. Gloomy's Nemesis

Seems like good news on Moose to me. In the grand scheme it’s hard to count a rotation out when our taxes aren’t even due until Monday.

  37. Doreen

    rbizzler -

Refresh my memory — who plays at AT&T park — I can’t keep track of most of the corporate parks.

Wrigley Field — make sure you go after April, when the ivy is green. We went in April, and the ivy was still brown and dead-looking. It took away alot of the charm. Unfortunately, we found Wrigley Field dirty and the Cubs fans a little hard to take. I would mention the parking situation, but there is none. (We paid to park in an overcrowded McDonald’s lot across the street, and the cars are just piled in.)

I agree – Camden Yards and Safeco are great venues. We had outfield seats at Safeco, and my husband just missed catching a (Yankees) homerun! Until that moment, I never actually realized what grown men will do to catch a ball :) .

  38. anaconda

Sorry to hear your Wrigley Field experience wasn’t the greatest, but I consider that place a baseball shrine and still one of the best places in baseball to watch a game — whether you are rooting for the Cubs or not.

As far as the ivy is concerned, yes, it is true that the ivy doesn’t fully bloom until the middle of May. And yes, parking can be tricky if you don’t know your way around Wrigleyville.

Sorry, I know you didn’t ask but I grew up a Yankees fan in Chicago and I’ve probably been to Wrigley a hundred times.

It’s a far better baseball atmosphere than the South Side of town at US Cellular Field.

Whos declaring the season over? When did Moose turn into Johan Santana?
