Pavano not pitching tomorrow

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 13, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Details are lacking at this point but word is that Carl Pavano will not make his start tomorrow night because of an arm problem. Darrell Rasner will start in his place.

Obviously this hardly comes as surprising news given Pavano’s long history of injuries since he totally swindled signed with the Yankees.

More on this once we speak to Joe Torre and the Rajah himself.

Does this mean he swindled us twice?

  2. Josh April 13th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

    what a joke

    whats our rotation now?

    Pettitte
    Igawa
    Rasner
    ????
    ????

  3. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

they need to start sending briefcases full of unmarked bills to clemens. now.

    they can’t catch a break.

  4. Zachary April 13th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

The Yanks really burst out of the starting gates this year…

Sheesh… what the heck is going on? I assume Igawa will pull a muscle or break a limb tonight…

    Tomorrow’s starting rotation:

    Andy Pettitte
    Darrell Rasner
    Phil Hughes
    Ross Ohlendorf
    Tyler Clippard

  5. sverlyn April 13th, 2007 at 5:42 pm

Well, since Pavano went through the Arizona program, who is Randy gonna blame this on?

  6. Jake April 13th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

Well the price tag for Clemens just got higher.

  7. sammy April 13th, 2007 at 5:45 pm

going to stay positive… going to stay positive…
… going to stay positive, until we hear what exactly is wrong with him.

    going… to… stay… positive…
… I think I’m getting the feeling that that doctor had before he turned into the Incredible Hulk.

  8. sammy April 13th, 2007 at 5:47 pm

    Josh – I think that’s actually, now:

    Pettitte
    Igawa
    ?????
    ?????
    ?????

    I think Jake’s spot-on.
Clemens just hit all “7′s.” Either that, or Boston did.
at some point, I don’t know if our offense can just out-power everyone when 3/5 of our rotation is out…

    … going… to… stay… positive…

  9. Greg C. April 13th, 2007 at 5:47 pm

This guys is amazing, just when you think hes ok and may be effective, he turns up with a “sore arm”. Honestly though, don’t most pitchers have sore arms in between starts? Isn’t this a normal thing that pitchers have to deal with?

  10. Cbrady9158 April 13th, 2007 at 5:49 pm

Torre said on the FAN that it was on muscle tightness in his forearm and that we would be pushed back to pitch on Tuesday. Torre figured those were muscles that are sore because they haven’t used to being used.

  11. jk April 13th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

Torre was out to lunch for the conditioning portion of spring training. Too busy counting his $7 million paycheck.

  12. Harley April 13th, 2007 at 5:54 pm

Too soon to panic. He may in fact be back Tuesday. Given how long it had been since he last pitched? This is not a shocking development.

    Okay, back to fingers crossed.

  13. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

“Clemens just hit all “7’s.â€? Either that, or Boston did.”

the two aren’t mutually exclusive. luckily, boston didn’t come sprinting out of the gate, either. IF wang comes back fine and IF moose only misses one start, they’ll be okay. IF pavano is only pushed back to tuesday, even better. those are three pretty big ifs, though. pavano’s been “sore” before. it usually ends up costing him half a season.

“at some point, I don’t know if our offense can just out-power everyone when 3/5 of our rotation is out…”

that point is now. they can’t. nobody’s offense can (or should be) counted on to win four of the five games through the rotation. it puts way too much pressure on the offense and the bullpen. it’s an absolutely disasterous scenario.

counting on pavano and igawa to deliver was pretty foolish, in my opinion, but they were kind of hamstrung (no pun intended) by those contracts. what else could they do?

  14. Basura April 13th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

Make up your mind guys – You complain when he pitches and then complain when he doesn’t.

It’s no use getting upset with the situation unless Pavano’s keeping a better pitcher on the bench.

  15. YankeesLuv April 13th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

::sighs:: what is there to say……

  16. Russell April 13th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Igawa isnt good… we are on the 5-day Pettitte plan.

  17. Russell April 13th, 2007 at 6:04 pm

Facing Oakland the next 3 days, it really doesn’t matter if Pavano pitches or his girlfriend pitches… move back Pettitte a game and have him start against Cleveland please.

  18. Melissa NY April 13th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

basura…sorry you’re name just made me laugh.

  19. Melissa NY April 13th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

    *your

  20. Nate April 13th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

    So it goes?

  21. mel April 13th, 2007 at 6:07 pm

    Basura,

Exactly! Fans hated him and then fell in love with him when he started pitching like the “ace” of the staff! And now they’re mad like jilted lovers.

The Yankees are better equipped than other teams to deal with this kind of adversity. Although, it’s kind of funny that we’re pining for Karstens.

Meanwhile, the other pitchers will step up if they still have a leg to stand on. We’ll be o.k. Won’t we? Just kidding. We survived the first week, we’ll definitely survive the season.

  22. You’ll never believe what I just heard at River Ave. Blues April 13th, 2007 at 6:08 pm

    [...] Pavano is hurt. [...]

  23. mel April 13th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

    KALLARDNYC,

I was blocked on your earlier post, but I think that Jeter’s song is “That’s That” by R. Kelly ft. Snoop Dog. I thought it was background music when I heard it in the game. But if you said Jeter has a new hip-hop song for his AB, then that’s definitely it. You Tube the video, it’s got nice color tones.

  24. Susan April 13th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

I’m just bummed b/c I’m going to all three Oakland games and was excited to see Pavano start. I agree, though, if we’re going to be without our starters, it’s better that it’s against Oakland’s offense. Let’s just hope Haren doesn’t shut us down AGAIN.

  25. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

    basura and mel,

are you kidding me?! is that seriously your argument? that unless we stood by pavano all along we can’t have a problem with his coming up lame yet again? seriously? wow.

people were “mad” at the guy because of the myriad injuries and ridiculous circumstances that ate up the majority of the last two seasons. there’s nothing irrational about being furious that your favorite team forked over a boatload of money to somebody who bruises his butt and stays on the sidelines for three months, and then comes up with dubious injury after dubious injury to prolong his stay on the sidelines.

just like there’s nothing irrational about seeing the guy contribute and hoping he’ll continue to do so.

“you can’t have it both ways.” nobody’s trying to have it both ways. everyone wants just the one way. you know, the one where pavano shows up and does what he’s SUPPOSED to do without all of the excess baggage. that’s all anyone’s wanted from day one.

and i’m sorry, but i’m not buying the “it’s just a sore arm, he’s not used to using those muscles” thing. really? he wasn’t on a throwing program that we heard so much about all winter? he didn’t pitch during spring training without any issues? whatever is wrong with pavano’s arm, i’d bet my house that it turns out to be more than just “soreness” and it keeps him on the sidelines a lot longer than three days.

  26. Cheng April 13th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

    oh, My godness,Pete

    PLEEEEASE!!!!! TELL ME YOU’RE JOKING!
I can’t believe this is happening.

  27. Susan April 13th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Plus let’s remember he 4 innings in his first start and only threw 79 pitches in his second.

  28. mel April 13th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

    kasey,

Please. Take a breath. I was just joking. Some people were taking Pavano’s setback very personally. Pete needs to put up a disclaimer that the blog is to be used for entertainment purposes only.

But, I agree with you about Torre’s explanation. The arm looked o.k. the last we saw it in Minny. Pavano also seemed “genuine” in his desire to contribute over the last week and a half. We’ll have to wait for the final verdict on this one.

  29. eric April 13th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

isn’t it a little late for the whole april fool’s thing?

  30. Thurman April 13th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

We will see Wang by May 1, Clippard by June 1, Clemens by July 1, Hughes by August 1 and Ohlendorf by September 1…..

  31. randy l April 13th, 2007 at 6:35 pm

all kidding aside. this might be a time to pick someone up. it’s gotten so bad it’s funny. who did peter a. want to trade farnsworth for? i don’t think the triple a kids are ready yet. it’s either pick someone up or ready or not , here they come. can henn be stretched out as a starter? villone is down there waiting. he could replcae henn if he went into the rotation.

  32. Doreen April 13th, 2007 at 6:37 pm

    Eric –

    Amen!

All I can hope for is that better for all this sturm and drang to be over with in the beginning of the season. It gives you more time to recover and look for alternatives. Of course, that’s assuming that it’ll only be for the beginning of the season….

  33. Andrea April 13th, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Joe Torre was on the Fan earlier. He said Pavano has
some soreness in his forearm. They hope that it’s just
because he hasn’t pitched in a long time (as we know),
but they decided to push him back until Tuesday.

  34. jay destro April 13th, 2007 at 6:39 pm

    phil plz k thx

  35. 2007 Yankees April 13th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

Friday the 13th STRIKES AGAIN! lol

Well, these things happen and I’m sure Pavano will be fine come Tuesday. It is too early in the season to worry about the pitching staff. Now if Pavano goes down and Igawa turns into a lefty Jaret Wright, then we have a problem. I fully believe Clemens will be joining the team in June. They have some options in AAA to get them through the lean times if necessary.
Am I worried?? Nope…then again, I don’t write the checks for the Yankees.

  36. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

“They hope that it’s just because he hasn’t pitched in a long time…”

if this is actually the yankees’ official stance on the injury, it’s absolute idiocy. what has pavano’s injury history shown us? that it’s NEVER something that just works itself out in a couple of days. if he’s not pitching until tuesday, excuse him from the weekend’s games, have tests run and, if ANYTHING shows up, DL him and bring somebody up. with igawa and rasner in the rotation, they can’t afford to be a pitcher short.

  37. Jeremy April 13th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

    Tim Redding! Paging Tim Redding!

  38. mel April 13th, 2007 at 6:58 pm

    Kasey,

I heard a rumor that Pavano made a pinky promise that he’d stay off the DL. I also heard he broke that pinky while making that promise.

  39. RSM April 13th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

I know it’s early in the season to panic, but this is getting ridiculous. It make be sink or swim time for some of the triple A guys. If they sink, this could rapidly turn into a “rebuilding year”.

  40. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

    RSM,

my thoughts exactly. it’d be a shame if this season turned out that way, but it’s got to happen at some point. we’ll see what happens. if wang and moose come back and everyone stays healthy, they should be okay. i’d be really shocked if this pavano thing turns out to be just a three-day injury.

  41. Skippy April 13th, 2007 at 7:17 pm

I think between starts they need to wrap Andy in bubble wrap and put him in a temperature controlled room located below ground. Kind of like the way the original Declaration of Independence is stored.

  42. Harley April 13th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

Kasey, how big is your house?

  43. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

big enough for two people and a fat, mentally disturbed, midget cat to live in comfortably.

    Kasey,

You don’t get a pass or your slate wiped clean simply because the calendar year has changed.

You have a well-known reputation on this site (and others as well, I’m sure) for focusing on the negative aspects of this team and ripping this team at the drop of a hat.

Everyone knows it but you and Pete himself has asked you what your deal is on several occasions.

Don’t you find that to be a little odd?

Last week, you refused to acknowledge that the very unbaseball-like 30-degree weather and snow had anything to do with their lackluster performances at the Stadium and was later proven wrong — again — when they travelled to MIN.

This kind of thing is nothing new and I would think by now you would have learned your lesson, but I guess you haven’t.

Are we supposed to give you credit because your absurdity and negativity hasn’t reached the levels of last season?

Give me a break. Just give it time — I’m sure you’ll come around.

Jeez, I live in Chicago and I run across Cub fans daily with far more optimism than you do and they have absolutely nothing to be optimistic about.

One of these teams is in the postseason every year and the other hasn’t won a WS in 100 years and you choose to consistently demean the former rather than the latter.

Some things on this planet simply cannot be explained.

  46. Grant April 13th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

What’s not surprising is that a guy who hasn’t pitched competitively in a year and a half has a stiff arm. Calm down chicken littles, it’s early yet and we’re flush with young pitching in our farm system.

And you can say Pavano swindled the Yankees, but do you really think this is how he planned it this way? Or are you just jumping on his back like everyone else?

  47. Schteeve April 13th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

i’ve never seen such a strong hysterical reaction to absolutely nothing before.

  48. Justin April 13th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

    NO VILLONE!!!!!!!

  49. gloomy April 13th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

SEASON OVAH… YANKEEEEEEEEEES LOOOOOOOOOSEE, THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEUH HHHH YANKEES LOSE.

thats what happens when you gots no pitching.

    Fire Torre, Fire Cashman.

    Bring up Hughes.

  50. Zander April 13th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

    RSM:
Yeah, maybe someone from AAA will pull a Stottlemyre (or Bouton or Downing) and save our bacon. Otherwise we’re going to have to win a $hitload of 9-8 games.

  51. wemisspaulie April 13th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Well, its not like he CAN’T pitch….it’s just pushed back a day…maybe no problem.

    Relax everyone.

  52. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

    “Kasey,
You don’t get a pass or your slate wiped clean simply because the calendar year has changed.”

    that’s fine by me.

“You have a well-known reputation on this site (and others as well, I’m sure) for focusing on the negative aspects of this team and ripping this team at the drop of a hat.
    Everyone knows it but you…”

no, i’m well aware of it.

“Last week, you refused to acknowledge that the very unbaseball-like 30-degree weather and snow had anything to do with their lackluster performances at the Stadium and was later proven wrong—again—when they travelled to MIN.”

what i did, anaconda, was note that other teams had been playing in the same weather and doing fine (noting, specifically, paul byrd’s 4 2/3 inning no-hitter against the mariners in snow, which you selectively ignored.) once it became obvious that the weather was a large factor in their play, i granted you the point. this is called admitting when you’ve been wrong about something. given the information i had at the time (the yankees had played very poorly in weather other teams were able to overcome), i could not lay blame on the weather until i saw them play in decent weather. when i did, i admitted my mistake.

“Are we supposed to give you credit because your absurdity and negativity hasn’t reached the levels of last season?”

    nope.

“Give me a break. Just give it time—I’m sure you’ll come around.”

i’ve been watching the team since i was 6 years old, that’s 21 years. through the lean 80s and early 90s, and the dynasties. from the time i was old enough to have an opinion on baseball, this is how i’ve cheered for the yankees. it’s not going to change. if you don’t like it, i don’t care. get used to it, ignore it, whatever.

“One of these teams is in the postseason every year and the other hasn’t won a WS in 100 years and you choose to consistently demean the former rather than the latter.”

you’d like me to demean the cubs? i’ll try to get to that. whatever makes you happy, sweetheart.

in terms of “demeaning” the yankees, you’re right. thinking igawa was a bad signing (again, i WANT him to do well, but don’t THINK he will) and criticizing pavano (whom i WANT to perform well) is just beyond the realm of comprehension. as was thinking the yankees played poorly committing 6 errors in two games. as was noting that the starting pitching needed to get better ASAP after five starts and no one touching the 6th inning. all of those opinions are just so insane, looking back, i’m surprised i haven’t been committed yet.

“Some things on this planet simply cannot be explained.”

    well put.

  53. jb April 13th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

wem, this is Pavano we’re talking about. You may be right, but I have to see it to believe it.

  54. LathamJoe April 13th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

Relax! It could be worse. We could still have Jared Wright as our No. 4! (BTW: He was just placed on the DL with a sore shoulder, AGAIN!

  55. stayalive April 13th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

Stop the agony. Cut the life support.

Folks, just give up on the season and starting thinking about next year….or start rooting for a team without all senior citizens….a team like the DRays.

  56. SJ44 April 13th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

April 13th folks. Gotta chill a bit. A little early in the season for mass hysteria.

This is not the first rodeo for the Yankees when it comes to pitching injuries.

I remember flying to Boston two years ago to see the Sox-Yanks series and Ruben Sierra was on my flight. I said hello and wished him luck in the series and crowed how good Wang had looked for a rookie. He said to me, “He is out for the season, hurt his shoulder”.

I thought he was joking. Little did I know I had a “scoop” and I am not even a journalist! lol

Heading into a 4 game series in Boston without Wang, filled with so many pitching injuries they needed to sign Al Leiter off the scrap heap to make a start, THAT’S rough.

Guess what? The Yankees got through it.

Kei Igawa could score some serious points if he shows up tonight and pitches 7 solid innings. Its not as if he is facing the ’27 Yankees. The A’s are not a good offensive team and that’s a big ballpark.

Pavano? If he pitches Tuesday, its no big deal. If he doesn’t……paging Matt DeSalvo from Scranton since the kids aren’t ready yet.

  57. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

“Well, its not like he CAN’T pitch….it’s just pushed back a day…maybe no problem.
    Relax everyone.”

from saturday to tuesday. that’s more than one day by my count. and it’s pavano we’re talking about. there’s no such thing as a minor injury with this guy.

  58. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

“Kei Igawa could score some serious points if he shows up tonight and pitches 7 solid innings. Its not as if he is facing the ‘27 Yankees. The A’s are not a good offensive team and that’s a big ballpark.”

true, but the yankees are facing the A’s three best pitchers. haren, blanton and harden aren’t chopped liver. igawa may not have 9 runs to work with.

  59. SJ44 April 13th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

BTW, the weather forecast for the Bronx Sunday, Monday and Tuesday is not good. Heavy winds and rain all three days.

Perhaps the Yankees are erring on the side of caution with Pavano. Figuring that they won’t be playing much baseball the early part of the week and, if he isn’t healthy, no sense pushing it.

Haren and Harden are tough. The Yankees smacked Blanton around last year. Win one of three (at worst) and its a 3-3 roadtrip. Its one game better than last year’s Minny-Oakland trek to start the season. Win the series and they are two games better than last year.

Its April. If they lost every game the rest of the month (which they won’t), they won’t be out of the race.

Wang and Karstans will be back the end of the month, Moose will be back in a week and, unless Pavano has an injury rather than soreness, he will pitch again.

If he doesn’t, somebody has to step up. There is enough pitching depth in the organization now that its not out of the norm to see that happen. As opposed to other years when the Darrel May’s and Tim Redding’s of the world needed to be summoned to pitch.

I’d rather see the Yankees play it safe with these guys now than push them and have longer term problems later in the year.

  60. Adam April 13th, 2007 at 7:58 pm

Oh my God, are you kidding me?! This is exactly why this team should have come into Spring Training with 6 starting pitchers. Look at all the injuries we’ve had in the first TWO WEEKS of the season!

We are in SERIOUS trouble…I hate to jump of a ledge so early in the season, but it’s obvious that this team is not going to be able to contend with this rotation all year long. We’re going to need to acquire somebody eventually.

  61. Josh April 13th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

people like pavano need to be locked up during fri the 13th

  62. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

“I’d rather see the Yankees play it safe with these guys now than push them and have longer term problems later in the year.”

i absolutely agree with that. i don’t necessarily agree that a losing april is something this team can overcome again. to a man, they all said falling so far off the pace early in 2005 and having to make up ground all season long wore them out for the playoffs. i’d really rather not watch that happen again.

  63. jennifer April 13th, 2007 at 8:00 pm

any chance it is just a tired arm? Just normal soreness from not pitching for the better part of 2 years?

  64. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 8:02 pm

by the way, “terrible fit” jd drew is the best thing about the red sox offense right now. he’s now hit in every game this season, and he looks like he woke up from that coma he was in during his tenure in LA. who knows if it’ll last all season but, right now, he’s fitting in pretty well. luckily nobody else in the lineup is doing much.

  65. Jake April 13th, 2007 at 8:02 pm

    Come on people

Take a deep breath. We’ll survive a few injuries. This is a strong, fighting team here. They wont let a few injuries keep them from winning.

Or have we forgotten the last few years here?

No ones blown out an elbow or broken a leg. Relax. ENjoy the games.

  66. Adam April 13th, 2007 at 8:08 pm

To the comment about JD Drew hitting well…we’ll see how long that lasts. Same thing happened with Lowell last year, too, and he eventually fell back to earth.

  67. Ben K. April 13th, 2007 at 8:12 pm

Is this a surprise? I mean, with spring training and two starts under his belt, Pavano’s thrown more in six weeks than he has in two years. Of course, he’s going to be sore. He’s using muscles harder than he has in a long time. I’ve gone through this at the beginning of the season. It’s a legitimate forearm problem but it goes away pretty quickly. Better now than in September.

  68. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 8:15 pm

oh, i don’t expect drew to hit .385 all season. i’m just saying, maybe he’s not the awful fit in boston everyone was sure he would be. too early to tell.

  69. SJ44 April 13th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

Nobody in the East is running away with the division. Not the Sox, Orioles, Rays or Blue Jays. Every team in the division, including the Yankees, are flawed.

Commenting on a hot April by Drew is as crazy as getting hysterical over April pitching injuries. Its WAY too early to look at anything as a trend (yes, even ARod’s hot start) after less than 10 games.

Everytime the doom and gloom crowd begins to count losses up before the games are played, the Yankees end up winning most of those games.

Nobody likes injuries but, there is nothing they can do except put another guy in there and hope he does the job.

When you think about it, its quite natural a guy who hasn’t pitched in two years is going to experience soreness now that he is on a regular pitching schedule again.

Did anybody ever stop to think that it was the Yankees, and not Pavano, who shut him down for tomorrow? If this was an “injury”, they wouldn’t have him slated to pitch on Tuesday night.

I’ll worry if he is in an MRI tube tomorrow and this “soreness” is creeping up his arm. If that happens, that’s a sign of elbow problems.

If its just soreness, they may be playing it safe with him since, the Yankees are historically conservative (overly so, IMO) with their pitchers when they are sore.

Carl Pavano was scratched from his start Saturday because of tightness in his forearm.

Forearm isn’t necessarily better than elbow in cases like these. The Yankees, though, seem hopeful that Pavano will avoid the DL. “I’m just going to give it a little extra time to get out of there,” said Pavano, who threw long toss Tuesday and Wednesday. “It just didn’t feel like it should feel. I’m not frustrated at all. It’s just something I’ve got to deal with. That’s just the way it is.” Darrell Rasner will start in Pavano’s place on Saturday.

It sounds like Pavano is just a little sore, and this should be no biggie, but given his history, you can’t blame fans for worrying. With Pavano, a few days can turn into 3 months. It seems like every time we get excited about this guy, he breaks our hearts.
Fortunately, SJ44 is right. Sunday will almost assuredly be rained out. That gives our staff another day to get well.

_oh, i don’t expect drew to hit .385 all season. i’m just saying, maybe he’s not the awful fit in boston everyone was sure he would be. too early to tell._

No one said he would be an *awful* fit in Boston. In fact, he’s a great fit for that lineup and the way Theo constructs a team. But we are skeptical of his ability to stay healthy and please the Boston crowd for the whole season. Keep in mind that it’s April. These teams have played a whopping 8 games.

“No one said he would be an awful fit in Boston.”

SEVERAL people said he’d be an awful fit in boston. several.

again (i love repeating myself. it’d be so easy if people actually stopped to read and comprehend here), I’M. NOT. SAYING. DREW. CAN. KEEP. IT. UP. ALL. YEAR.

    good god.

You’re kind of a giant douche. Has anyone ever told you?

  77. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

i would guess pete’s probably working on a story/post regarding pavano, and then you’ll get the lineups.

  78. kasey April 13th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

i just get tired of repeating myself and people not reading carefully. everybody can be a prick.

is it me or does mirabelli come up with a big hit every time i watch him play? for a guy who can’t hit, he always seems to come through when i watch a red sox game.

  82. jennifer April 13th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Maybe the Yankees are pushing him back so he is set up to pitch against the soxs?

  83. murphydog April 13th, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Cripes.. I step out for dinner and this happens!

Here’s what I am thinking: King Carl has no Yankee track record of non-DL injury. He’s never had anything that wasn’t “serious.” So I’m sure he is under the penalty of death if he doesn’t tell the staff about every little ache and pain. (Can you blame them?) Joe, Geno and Cash kept a straight face when he told them about his arm and decided to go with an excess of caution to make sure this paper tiger doesn’t go DL again. So, maybe it’s nothing…

  84. rainbowtrout April 13th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

And Wakefield looks pretty darn good. Certainly far superior to the likes of Kei Igawa.

  85. Andy Hawkins' Ghost April 13th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

My feeling on this stuff is I’d rather have it occur in April than in August. RELAX EVERYBODY. We’re going to win the WS. Mark it.

  86. rainbowtrout April 13th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Sorry, but April games count just as much as August games.

Which is why counting on guys like Igawa, Rasner, Karstens (or any other dud) is insanity.

  87. Ryan April 13th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

[sarcasm]It’s a shame we dont have Lieber. Come out of the pen against C. Lee and give up a grand slam. his 20.25 ERA would look great in pinstripes[/sarcasm]

You’re right. We should’ve signed Zito for infinity years at 17 million for him to suck. That would have been a GREAT signing.

  89. murphydog April 13th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

    Pssst ryan:

    Don’t feed the trolls.

  90. Rajah of Rehab April 13th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Wakefield looks even more brilliant when he can’t throw his knuckleball and gets taken out early.

  91. WindyCity April 13th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

The good news is,Wang is scheduled to pitch a rehap game this Saturday (Karstens on Monday night).

    http://redsox.bostonherald.com.....eid=194658

Wang will likely pitch another rehap game next Thursday. If all goes well, he could be back by April 24th.

A Taiwanese newpaper reported that Wang showed great control during Wednesday’s simulation game, throwing 45 pitches. It’s promising!

  92. j April 13th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

I stopped reading about 3/4 of the way down these comments, so my apologies if someone has mentioned this already: I suspect that Pavano is on strict orders to report any and all discomfort, pain, soreness, etc. This basically makes it impossible for him to be a tough guy; he’s probably lost the right to determine good/ok pain from bad pain. So he reports everything, and the FO makes the decision. I suppose this would imply that he is being set up as trade bait, but who knows. This scenario is pretty aligned with Pavano circa mid-2006: if you remember correctly, the guy was hurt in a car accident and tried to pitch anyway. While I agree his commitment at times can be questioned, there really isn’t much you can point to after the All-Star break in 2006 that would show me that Pavano (1) doesn’t want to pitch or (2) is milking injuries.

So, step back from the ledge, grab a beer, and enjoy the game tonight.

  93. Jim Clark April 13th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Let’s look at the good side. At least he told people and didn’t try to pitch with pain and end up aggravating his injury. But I ain’t gonna bet two cents that he makes his start Tuesday either.

  94. sverlyn April 13th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

    Hey Randy,

Care to comment on this quote:??????

““I see no reason why the Yankees don’t run something like the program Pavs attended for all their players in the offseason. If they are looking for an edge that puts them over the top and back in the World Series, why not try to be the best conditioned team in baseball?â€?
    murphydog-
that would be the program from arizona trainer brett fischer:
    http://www.fischer-sports.com/FSPage.html
he also trained wang, justin morneau, and freddie garcia before the 2006 season. that seemed to work out well. ”

    Oooooooooops, nevermind

Thanks for checking it out, Kasey. The three of us have been around the Yankee blogosphere and we’ve been working hard make this new venture a good one this year.

About you comments about Pavanos injury….
I usually like your stuff, but, sometimes you can be a real jerk.
