The rotation is in tatters but the bullpen let the Yankees down on Friday night in a loss against Oakland.

There is some good news. Mike Mussina is feeling OK and Chien-Ming Wang will make a rehab start today. Hideki Matsui is also making progress.

Here’s a stat for you: Kyle Farnsworth has faced 23 batters this season. He has thrown a first-pitch strike to only nine of them and has fallen behind 15 of them. Of his 84 pitches, 43 have been strikes.

A late-inning relief has one primary job: pound the strike zone.

Here’s a weird one: Doug Mientkiewicz is 0 for his last 21. He has struck out only once in that stretch. But clearly he should have been pinch hit for in the 6th, 8th or 10th innings on Friday.

I don’t fault Joe Torre for using Kevin Thompson to run for Jason Giambi in the eighth inning. With two on and no outs, you have a chance to have a big inning and take the lead.
