Breaking news: Pavano, Mussina on DL

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 15, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Mike Mussina (left hamstring) and Carl Pavano (right forearm) were placed on the disabled list.

RHP Chris Britton arrived this morning. The team will play a man short today. The team has not decided who will start on Tuesday but Class AA LHP Chase Wright is on the 40-man roster and lined up.

Mussina threw seven easy pitches off the mound before feeling pain in his leg. Pavano warmed up but never got on the mound.

“I’m not going to be ready to pitch in five days, we might as well take 10 days and get it right,” Mussina said.

Mussina ran sprints and seemed optimistic that he could return once his 15 days are up. But Chien-Ming Wang said the same thing and he has been out since March 23.

As for Pavano, anything is possible. We could see him in two weeks or next season. Given his history, it won’t be two weeks.

Today was a very good day for Alan and Randy Hendricks.

oh my goodness!!! we need clemens asap

  3. Kyle April 15th, 2007 at 3:12 pm

Just tell me you’re not saving the “Pettitte’s arm falls off” news for a new blog post.

  4. Alex April 15th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

This is 2005 all over again

  5. Justin April 15th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

This is absolutely ridiculous. Who hasn’t been injured? Igawa?

    Yes, exactly one.

  6. Annie Savoy April 15th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

Send for the Texas Hustler immediately – are any of his kids old enough to play, too?

  7. SlickBomb April 15th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

Great. Carl Soze is injured again. Has there been a more injury-bitten team than the Yankees over the past three years??

  8. beavis April 15th, 2007 at 3:15 pm

great work pete btw in breaking this news

  9. Jamie April 15th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

    Can A-Rod pitch?

  10. Andrew April 15th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Jesus. I wonder if Boston fans will give the Yankees a break because “any loss will be because of injuries.” Doubt it. Good thing we YFs don’t make excuses for failure.

  11. Gayle April 15th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

Was Britton on a plane yesterday?? With the weather we are having here in the East I dont think much is taking off.

  12. Justin April 15th, 2007 at 3:22 pm

    Now pitching, Miguel Cairo…

  13. Zachary April 15th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

Why don’t we just drink poison? :)

When Kei Igawa is your number 2 starter, you just might be in trouble…

  14. Jamie April 15th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

We’ll be fine. Clippard and Chase will come up and dominate. And on that note I’ll enhale some ether.

  15. Justin April 15th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

Maybe it will just rain all week.

  16. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 3:29 pm

Like your attitude Jamie. Nothing to fear but fear itself. Time for the attack of the baby bombers

  17. Brian April 15th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Anyone remember,”Spahn and Sain and pray for rain”. Guess it’s Pettite and Igawa…….Hopefully the storm will stay over the east coast for the next week or so, until we get the Wanger back.

Seriously, we have much better options in AAA and AA than in any previous year. Would like to see Chase Wright get a chance.

It’s a long season and many other teams are having cold weather, injuries.

    So Cal Yankee Fan 8)

  18. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Boston site expounding schadenfreude over the injuries. Be careful what you wish for.

  19. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

We will be fine, the kids will get some experience. Could be a blessing in disguise, one of the kids could step up and into the rotation so we can say good by to Pavano and his bruised buttocks.

  20. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Yes Pete, I was thinking the same thing re: the Hendricks brothers.

I don’t think this is so bad. Better Moose comes back healthy than trying to be a hero and pitching with a sore hamstring is awful Northeast weather. That seems pointless to me.

Pavano? Now, honestly folks, did any of us think he would stay “healthy” all season? This is probably season ending in his mind and good riddence.

Half of starting pitching is being able to take the ball. He can’t do it so, forget about him.

Personally, I am excited about seeing Chase Wright Tuesday night. He represents the future. Carl Pavano is a reminder of the dumb Yankee ways of the past.

See ya Carl. Enjoy another 6 month, $10 million dollar rehab assignment for a nothing injury.

  21. RJPinstripes April 15th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

What about using Proctor as a starter? There was talk about this some time ago, but we are now in shaky straits, so it might be time. Can we puleeze get some healthy starters?

  22. Josh #2 April 15th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Chase Wright on Tuesday from Kim Jones on the pregame.

  23. Gustavo April 15th, 2007 at 3:35 pm

Wow… so 6 of the 21 pitchers on the 40 man roster are on the DL? damn… Only starters on the 40 man are Kennard and Chase Wright. They could always DFA Bean and call up Steven Jackson, Clippard or even Hughes…(all could pitch because of the rainouts)

  24. EV April 15th, 2007 at 3:36 pm

Moose on the DL. My day is officially ruined.

  25. jb April 15th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

    Kennard is a reliever

  26. Andrew April 15th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

Hey, at least we won’t see Tim Redding on the mound again in a spot start.

  27. Lauren April 15th, 2007 at 3:38 pm

pavano has to be one of the biggest disappointments in all of sports. how much longer can this go on?

is he a crook? i’m starting to wonder.

  28. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 3:40 pm

I called it last night, who was the idiot who argued when I said Wright would be the first one called up. And luckily for me I picked him up in my keeper AL only fantasy league. He will be a very capable piece, maybe not on Tuesday but after that.

  29. Jamie April 15th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

Yeah we need to remember that we had Sidney Ponson start last season at one point.

  30. Stephen April 15th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

Look on the bright side…if Cashman hadn’t made trades this winter, the Opening Day rotation of Mussina, Pettitte, Wang, Johnson and Wright would be in even WORSE shape, DL-wise.

Andrew: I’d like to think that we don’t make excuses, but a bad trip to Boston (I’m too superstitious to type the S-word), would surely prove me wrong!

  31. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

I really like the idea of another southpaw to the staff in Wright. Any of these guys show any kind of success, I say Pavano goes on E-Bay.

  32. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

You can’t move Proctor into the rotation now. He isn’t stretched out to start. If they were to do that, it would take him (at minimum) two weeks to get stretched out and would be unavailable to them during that time. Not worth it.

As another poster stated, this is why Cashman beefed up the farm system. He can now patch things up from within.

I am excited about seeing what Chase Wright can do. Its a no lose situation for him and I think he has the ability to get the job done.

Weather permitting of course, since that game may get rained out.

The injuries stink but, nobody is going to feel sorry for the Yankees. They just have to tighten things up defensively (to help the pitching) and start hitting with RISP again.

There is certainly enough time to weather this storm provided other guys step up. Its definitely not panic time.

  33. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 3:46 pm

I for one am psyched that Pavano got hurt and Chase Wright is in the rotation. The future starts Tuesday.

  34. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

sj44, well said, and I agree.

  35. Justin April 15th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Hey how old is Chase? Anyone know?

  36. Moose and Pavano hit the DL, and this is a good thing at River Ave. Blues April 15th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

[...] Why you ask? Because their likely replacements will probably outperform them. [...]

  37. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

I think this is a blessing in disguise.

  38. Dan from Mass April 15th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

I don’t see that news anywhere else, and you had it over a half hour ago. You’re the best, Peter – you’re like the Drudge Report of baseball news.

  39. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

    Chase is 24 years old, 6′ 2″ 205LBS.

  40. Kat April 15th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

Better now than in the dog days of august. Besides, we all knew this might be a rough year “pitching wise,” and we all commended Cash-Money for not going after the few high-priced FA pitchers this past winter. Keep in mind that we are looking towards the future here… and with the young arms in our system, I have to wear shades (despite the gross rain) because our future is so dam bright.

    This, too, shall pass.

  41. kris April 15th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Cheer up! I for one am curious about how Chase Wright will do in the majors. Better give him a look now than late in the season. He probably needs more experience in the minors. But if he is ready… boy the yankees got themselves another good young (and cheap) starter, giving Cashman more money/trading chips for a run at an ace like Santana.

  42. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

We have far better options than Sydney Ponson, Aaron Small or Sean Chacon.

  43. Justin April 15th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Thanks, Tim. Why did we only start hearing of him this spring? Or am I oblivious?

  44. homi ahmahuslah April 15th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

    Peter:

I feel like you’re erroneously entertaining the popular notion that Clemens can save this team. If Pavano and Wang are injured, AND Mussina comes back and struggles, AND Pettite can’t go into late innings, AND Igawa is inconsistent, AND management continues to coddle Hughes in the minors, what makes you think Clemens–assuming this year isn’t the year he starts to show his age–can make any difference at all???

  45. Hello?offense? April 15th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

The future is bright if, and only if, these young starters actually turn out to be decent. Ohlendorf (Torre’s fav) is awful so far in AAA and Sanchez is a chronic injury problem. Just because a pitcher is young doesn’t make him any good. But it should be interesting to watch Chase pitch on tuesday…hopefully, he’ll be a little more poised than Henn was when he got a few starts.

  46. Jennifer April 15th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

I heard Chris got to Oakland via Toronto.

Mike is right if he is going to out another 5 days, why not just make it 10. Play it safe at this point, plus you get another body up here.

  47. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

Chase Wright was pitcher of the year for the Florida State league (single A) in 2006 where he was 12-3 1.88 ERA in 37 games (14 starts). He is 1-0 and hasn’t given a run in 14 innings this season with Trenton. There are many in Spring training who said we would see called Wright up before Hughes based on his performance in ST. People from other organizations.

  48. Brian M April 15th, 2007 at 3:58 pm

At least we won’t be starting Tavarez. Still makes me chuckle. ;)

  49. Gustavo April 15th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

woops, my mistake Kennard is in fact a reliever.

  50. Tim April 15th, 2007 at 4:01 pm

Well, we have Sean Henn, Karstens, Rasner and of course Wang in the past few, I would expect more of the upcoming group to contribute. We also got Bobby Abreau with Matt Smith. So much for the weak Yankee farm.

  51. Stormy April 15th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

Chill out, people. Everyone hated our starting rotation to start the season anyway. Now you’ll get to see the kids. Chase Wright is a good pitcher. He hasn’t had much experience at the upper levels, which is a concern, but he’ll be fine. I don’t like calling up Britton — he’s not good (despite what his avid supporters say) — but I guess they’re still down on T.J. Beam.

Wang is on his way back. That’s the important thing. Even if Pavano never makes it back (and he will, people, seriously) then Wright can potentially stick around, Kartsens is back soon, and Clippard, Hughes and maybe even Clemens can fill in later on. These things always happen and everyone pulls their hair out, and then they work themselves out.

  52. David G April 15th, 2007 at 4:18 pm

    Amen, Stormy.

  53. Deric April 16th, 2007 at 1:07 am

Calling Wright today is just a terrible mistake. Like Mike A. said, Chase Wright is not the answer. If you think he is, then I hope the simplicity of calling him up because he’s lined up to start Tuesday and is already on the 40-man roster comforts you when he gets his brains beat in. In short, he isn’t ready for the big league and this call up may derail his progress and eventually his career as a starter.

Remember the last time we had a 24 year old left handed starter in a groove in AA, but then called him up? At the time, he was a potential big-time lefty. He got destroyed in the big league, and fell back to his previous habits.

[...] Brian Cashman said explicitly that the Yankees would not be trading for experienced pitching talent and would instead be focusing on developing their own young pitchers. But with Mussina, Pavano and Wang all on the DL, things are looking bleak in the Bronx. Rassner looked okay after getting knocked up the other night and Chris Britton is on his way to join the team right now with Hughes undoubtedly close behind. The question is, how long will it be before someone convinces 44-year old Roger Clemens to save the day? [...]

Pretty sad that your season hinges on the performance of a rookie pitcher with exactly three starts above A-ball, and a 42-year old who 1) Is not signed; 2) Has not decided if he still wants to play; and 3) Hasn’t pitched in the AL in three years.
