Tough call for Torre

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 15, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Well, here is one time I think Joe Torre should use Mariano Rivera in a tie game on the road. With 2-3-4 coming up for Oakland and Mo warmed up, put him out there.

Who closes? I guess you deal with if you take the lead.

I agree Pete but its still a tough call for Joe since he has vowed to use Mo for only 1 inning per appearance this year

  2. Emobacca April 15th, 2007 at 12:34 am

Krazy Kyle got away with a hanger there but we’ll take it

  3. jessica April 15th, 2007 at 12:35 am

I think Joe did the right thing…Bring Mo in when we take a lead….it’s still early for season….if we don’t make a deal with kyle…We need to build up his confident level…Even though i am holding my breath now…Thank God…Joe is right…Kyle did his job

  4. Mac April 15th, 2007 at 12:35 am

A question, maybe Pete or somebody else can answer this, why haven’t we been seeing those 100mph fastballs from Farnsworth? Is it cause he’s throwing a fastball with movement, like a two-seamer? Or something else?

  5. kerouac April 15th, 2007 at 12:36 am

all’s well that ends well. if we win this game, we could go home 4-2 on the trip.

  6. jessica April 15th, 2007 at 12:37 am

one more thing,Joe did something which need a strong heart to do..Let Myer finished that inning…Let Kyle in…Great job

  7. jessica April 15th, 2007 at 12:38 am

if we win this game, this should give a lot of peopel confidence.

  8. Andrew April 15th, 2007 at 12:39 am

Torre’s a genius if his pitchers don’t give up a run, I guess.

  9. jessica April 15th, 2007 at 12:40 am

    people…wrong spell…

  10. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 12:42 am

Torturing us New Yorkers with two straight extra innings games on the west coast. Good thing there is nothing to do but stay in tomorrow as mother nature washes NJ.

  11. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 12:42 am

It was a bad call putting Farnsworth in the game but, it worked out.

He almost threw away 3 pickoff throws to first, and got away with a hanger, but he got out of the inning.

Question I have is, do the Yankees chart warmup pitches by their relievers? If they do, and they got Mo up (fell asleep, don’t know if they did or not), they have to put him in the game, IMO.

Warming him up and not using him does him, or the team no good.

Minky now 0-23. Two first basemen, neither guy can bat .100. What a joke.

  12. Rudy April 15th, 2007 at 12:45 am

ya i think it was a good idea to put farns in another close game and i epect more of the same. I think joe’s trying to make farns comfortable in that situation that way if he sorts it out early we have a servicable reliever for the rest of the season. If he doesnt get him in and only pitches in blow out games like some people yesturday said then we’ll end up blowing out the other relievers in the bullpen. this way he feels the confidense that joe still thinks he can get the job done and who knows. although torre will probably blow out the bullpen anyway this way its more spread out. if farns can sort this all out our bullpen looks alot better

  13. Ryan April 15th, 2007 at 12:46 am

so, which starter pitches after Mo leaves before the 12th?

  14. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 12:50 am

Do we have anymore starting pitchers? Aren’t they all on the DL.

  15. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 12:51 am

    Brian Bruney.

  16. Cooper April 15th, 2007 at 12:52 am

The more I see of phelps the less I like him he is perhaps the only 1st baseman worse than Giambi first baseman need to be able to scoop the ball. Both he and Minky are not hitting t least minky can field his position. By the way for those of you watching on gameday I finally have access t yes and both of minky’s outs have been well hit to the wrong spot. I hope its a matter of time until one falls in. later. Great catch by jeter, holy crap!!!

  17. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 12:52 am

Man Jeter is putting on a highlight film today take away the two errors :-) Should be one, the second was all Phelps

  18. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 12:52 am

To answer your question honestly, if Pavano had any guts, he should volunteer to pitch.

But, since he is “nursing an injury”, he will sit it out, lessening the pitching roster by another guy.

  19. Cooper April 15th, 2007 at 12:52 am

sorry fr the repeat my computer on the fritz

  21. Erick April 15th, 2007 at 12:53 am

    Bruney is taxed, he shouldn’t.

Mariano hasn’t pitched in a long time, even if Torre said he wouldn’t he should use him for two.

  22. Rey22 April 15th, 2007 at 12:54 am

I’d say if they absolutely HAVE to throw a starting pitcher out there it might be Mussina.

  23. Kim April 15th, 2007 at 12:55 am

When was the last time Rivera pitched?

  24. Josh April 15th, 2007 at 12:55 am

if u dont send mo out for a 2nd inning what happens if this game goes multiple more innings, bruney has been used an awful lot and mo hardly at all

  25. sunny615 April 15th, 2007 at 12:59 am

c’mon – somebody homer! so i can go to bed.

  26. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 1:00 am

Wonder if A Rod will get a another chance? I predict he gets the winning RBI

  27. Rey22 April 15th, 2007 at 1:01 am

    I second that sunny…

  28. Ryan April 15th, 2007 at 1:03 am

someone tell everyone minus A-Rod that homeruns are legal in baseball

  29. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 1:03 am

Well, now we see if Torre was telling the truth about the, “only one inning for Mo” this year.

Personally, I hope he is out of this game because its a long season and the WORST thing you can do is overdo it with Mo in April.

Either Torre is going to have to stretch out his starters more, or his bullpen is going to be shot by Memorial Day.

The way he handles a pitching staff boggles my mind at times.

  30. Rey22 April 15th, 2007 at 1:03 am

Hmm…I just noticed despite all of the complaining about Torre and the pitching, we’ve held the Athletics scoreless for 10 innings tonight. Not too shabby.

  31. Rudy April 15th, 2007 at 1:03 am

I agree wwith you jeff im saying abreu get on and its up to arod

  32. sunny615 April 15th, 2007 at 1:03 am

at the moment, I’d take the bat boy hitting the winning rbi – my eyes are getting twitchy.

  33. Hello?offense? April 15th, 2007 at 1:04 am

awful. simply awful. nobody can say this is a good offense.

  34. Cooper April 15th, 2007 at 1:04 am

my money is that AROD wins it too just a feeling walk off homer his next at bat…………this could be exhaustion talking??

  35. YankeeJosh April 15th, 2007 at 1:05 am

    Josh, I agree with you.

I think the FO may be forced to call up Britton (or Bean or Beam) tomorrow. Or well, later today. This pen is going to need help. Rasner or Henn sent down perhaps?

  36. Andrew April 15th, 2007 at 1:05 am

    I can, thanks.

The Yankees can lose this game now. I’ve accepted it.

  37. sunny615 April 15th, 2007 at 1:05 am

Arod – i beg you – homer at the top of the 13th so I can go to sleep.

  38. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:06 am

Let’s say – hypothetically – this game goes past the 12th or 13th inning…the Yankees have no one left in their bullpen, and no starters they could even use to pitch since our only healthy starters are Pettitte, Rasner and Igawa. I think Bruney is just going to have to be the wing man tonight and take this one for the team…Joe is probably going to leave him in there as long as this game continues. And considering Bruney threw so much yesterday, I can’t see this game lasting much longer…

  39. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 1:07 am

Announcer introduced this pitcher as Brian Bru-nay

  40. hmmm April 15th, 2007 at 1:07 am

“my money is that AROD wins it too just a feeling walk off homer his next at bat…………this could be exhaustion talking??”

probably, since they are in Oakland.

  41. sunny615 April 15th, 2007 at 1:08 am

with all the complaining about wasting the pen, it’s not like Torre had a lot to work with in the beginning – the first week, no starter lasted beyond the 5th, and since then – the offense can’t score enough runs to wina game… so what are you going to do?

  42. Dave April 15th, 2007 at 1:08 am

I agree with Adam.. I can’t imagine this turning out well unless Bruney has a quick 12th and the yankees score in the top of the 13th.

  43. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 1:09 am

Its the A’s, let’s not send up balloons. They are an awful offensive team, which makes last night’s meltdown all the more painful.

Shutting out the A’s is not any cause for celebration. Especially when you have to use your entire bullpen to do so.

  44. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:11 am

My guess (and this is a pretty long stretch) is that if this game somehow went to the 14th or 15th edit, Joe would have no choice but to use Pettitte, and then call up someone else to pitch tomorrow. Other than that, I have no idea. I almost want the A’s to win it just so Torre doesn’t have to face that decision…he really has his hands tied here as far as what to do.

  45. Cooper April 15th, 2007 at 1:11 am

bulldog bruney gettin it done hells yeah!!

PS does cairo have pitching experience??

  46. Dave April 15th, 2007 at 1:11 am

    Part 1 complete.

Now we just need that run (or two)

  47. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 1:11 am

Anyone else impressed with rookie Travis Buck? I happenned to pick him up for my for my rotisserie team when I heard he made the roster, but he gets a hit every night, had the big hit in yesterdays extra inning. Beware of him when he gets up next inning.

  48. Rudy April 15th, 2007 at 1:11 am

kinda wierd alex #13 can maybe win it in the 13th maybe its just wishful thinking

  49. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:11 am

Sorry ’bout that, I meant “14th or 15th inning.” It’s been a long night, lol…

  50. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:12 am

“PS does cairo have pitching experience??”

He will by the end of this game, lol…

  51. Ryan April 15th, 2007 at 1:13 am

no way you can call someone up tomorrow. that means flying them cross country to start a game that happens in 15 hours. I would just think that is logistically impossible.

  52. Deric April 15th, 2007 at 1:13 am

I don’t care, just end this please!

  53. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:14 am

The only way I could see it happening is if they’ve already possibly made the decision to call someone up and have arranged a flight to Oakland, unknown to us right now. I agree it’s a long stretch, but there’s no way Bruney can pitch anymore than 3 or 4 innings…

  54. Gar April 15th, 2007 at 1:14 am

One main drawback with the idea of using Pettitte and calling someone up for tomorrow is that the Yankees generally have a short leash on the callups. If that guy only lasts 4 or 5 innings, the bullpen would be in for another long adventure. Whereas Pettitte should be able to last 6+ innings.

But I agree, I don’t really see any choice other than Pettitte if Bruney is taken out of the game…

  55. Rudy April 15th, 2007 at 1:14 am

oh well there goes my theory

  56. Dave April 15th, 2007 at 1:15 am

I feel bad for Bruney if he has to pitch beyond this inning..

Yet at the sametime I want the win

  57. Cooper April 15th, 2007 at 1:15 am

seriously though do any position players on the yanks have pitching experience???

  58. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:15 am

    Pleeeeeeease hit it out, Jason.

I really think Joe should have used Mo for 2 innings…if someone else needed to close later tonight, then so be it. Worry about winning now rather than later…

  59. Rudy April 15th, 2007 at 1:16 am

    yesssss giambiiiiiiiiii

  60. Cooper April 15th, 2007 at 1:16 am

  66. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 1:17 am

Start fluffing the pillows, the Giambino went deep!!! Man he has his moments, still can’t wait to be rid of his contract, but that’s a discussion for another day.

  67. Mike April 15th, 2007 at 1:17 am

    GIAMBI!!!

    YESSIR!!!

  68. Ryan April 15th, 2007 at 1:17 am

    F*&*^ YES!!!!!

I’m Sorry I hated on you Giambino

  69. Pakistan Dustin April 15th, 2007 at 1:17 am

    Giambino!!

  70. Captain421 April 15th, 2007 at 1:17 am

Bruney please close this game!!!! It would be nice if Rivera was still in this game to close it. Hopefully Bruney isnt too tired.

  71. Josh April 15th, 2007 at 1:18 am

bruney has lugged an awfuol lot of innings, one more tonite brian u can do it, they cant hit that FB!

  72. Ryan April 15th, 2007 at 1:18 am

  74. Hello?offense? April 15th, 2007 at 1:19 am

    ugh minky.

  75. Ryan April 15th, 2007 at 1:20 am

dear god why are we running

  76. hmmm April 15th, 2007 at 1:20 am

hey joe, cano is not fast.

  77. Erick April 15th, 2007 at 1:20 am

Two caught stealings by Cano tonight? Man, stop running!!!

  78. Eric April 15th, 2007 at 1:20 am

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  79. Dave April 15th, 2007 at 1:21 am

3 more outs, I cannot wait to go to bed

  80. Mike April 15th, 2007 at 1:21 am

    Yay! Minky got HBP! SUCCESS!!!

  81. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 1:21 am

Well, if Poor Bruney’s arm doesn’t fall off, he gets the bottom half of the inning.

  82. jessica April 15th, 2007 at 1:21 am

    come on…one more run…

  83. Erick April 15th, 2007 at 1:21 am

Man Minky got on base!!! Good lord halelujah now if Cano hadn’t ran…

  84. Captain421 April 15th, 2007 at 1:21 am

Are Giambi and Posada going to be stealing bases tomorrow?

  85. Cooper April 15th, 2007 at 1:22 am

i still think Cairo should be the 13th inning specialist………………who’s with me?

  86. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:23 am

Calling a hit and run with Mientkiewicz at the plate…smooth, Joe. Very smooth.

I’m not putting this one in the win column yet. Baseball is a tricky sport…sometimes all it takes is to see your opponent get one hit like that and it sets you off. Here’s to hoping we can close it out, though, guys…

  87. Deric April 15th, 2007 at 1:23 am

OH My G~! Why was Cano running? Don’t tell me it’s Torre’s decision again!!

  88. Hello?offense? April 15th, 2007 at 1:24 am

That’s a choke job by Bruney.

  89. Captain421 April 15th, 2007 at 1:24 am

Bruney has got to be kidding me!!!

  90. Josh April 15th, 2007 at 1:24 am

    ugh leadoff walk… DAMN

  91. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:24 am

    Bruney’s losing it…he’s topping out at 90 – 92 MPH this inning. Poor kid…

  92. Rey22 April 15th, 2007 at 1:24 am

    Bruney can’t throw strikes now…

  93. Pakistan Dustin April 15th, 2007 at 1:25 am

    oh stop with drama bruney

  94. Rudy April 15th, 2007 at 1:25 am

Bruney looks tired man i hope he could get through this

  95. Cooper April 15th, 2007 at 1:25 am

did any one else jut notice bruney has a giant cross tatoo on his arm bada$$

  96. vin April 15th, 2007 at 1:25 am

How often does a team commit 4 errors and win? No doubt Torre will mention that.

  97. Hello?offense? April 15th, 2007 at 1:25 am

talk about a crushing loss if it happens

  98. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 1:26 am

Tough to blame Bruney but, man the 4 pitch walks and pitching from behind are just killers. Hope the kid can get through this because he is showing some guts out there. Would be nice for him to be rewarded for it.

worst defense in history of mlb

  102. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:27 am

Win or lose, Bruney’s going to need like a week off, lol. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s optioned to Scranton just so the Yankees can call someone else up for the bullpen.

    Posada’s gotta catch that ball…

  103. Captain421 April 15th, 2007 at 1:27 am

More great defense. Nice way to help out the tired pitcher.

  104. Mike April 15th, 2007 at 1:29 am

    One down.

  105. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:30 am

Oh my God, I seriously thought that ball was gone…

If Bruney gets out of this inning, it’s going to be purely by luck. He’s throwing in the low 90′s and his location is off.

  106. Rudy April 15th, 2007 at 1:30 am

that was to close i almost turned off the tv it looked like he just missed it common 2 more outs

  118. Matt April 15th, 2007 at 1:32 am

hard earned win right there, hopefully we can get some innings out of our starters the next few days.

  119. Erick April 15th, 2007 at 1:32 am

    THANK YOU

  120. Jeff NJ April 15th, 2007 at 1:32 am

i’m surprised bruney can lift his arm for the high 5 lineup!

  126. Hello?offense? April 15th, 2007 at 1:34 am

    bruney was going on fumes…

  127. Adam April 15th, 2007 at 1:34 am

I’m about to get me a Bruney t-shirt…

  128. hmmm April 15th, 2007 at 1:34 am

thank God giambi didn’t walk in the 9th, since Torre had KT stretching to pinch run.

  129. SJ44 April 15th, 2007 at 1:34 am

Tip of the cap bigime to Bruney. If he can give up some of his guts to Carl Pavano, we could have a helluva starting pitcher.

Big, big ups to Bruney. That was really needed!

  130. jessica April 15th, 2007 at 1:34 am

man,i almost stop breathing…i can’t stand another extra inning lost…

  131. Mike S. April 15th, 2007 at 1:37 am

    A good win.

    Goodnight.

I have to hand it to Rasner. Not a great performance, but he settled down after giving up 3 in the first and gave the team a chance to win. That is all we wanted.

Even though our starters didn’t go deep into the games, but it’s enough. The reason for these two games is going extra innings. This kills us in these two games. We have to remember Kei and Ranser is our no.4.5or6 starter.

All pitchers did the great job..After first inning, there are 12 innings for three hits…OH!My God!Great job!Our offense and defense have to be better than this…I don’t blame offense becuase this will happen when you meet good pitcher. But defense…Come on…We need to have better defense to help out pitchers.

This was not a tough decision for Joe. He more or less had no decision. Events basically conspired to force him to violate one of the Holy Tenets of Baseball (you know, the one about closers on the road in tie games), and it worked out for the best.

But enough about Joe. What a gutty night for Brian Bruney.

Nice job, SJ44, showing confidence in this team since you were already chalking this up as a loss after the 1st inning.

Great job by Rasner and the pen for holding this team scoreless for the last 12 innings.

I don’t care if they are the worst hitting team int he league or the best hitting team, holding a team scoreless for 12 innings is outstanding.

Shocking. A perennial playoff team found a way to win despite their shaky defense and missed opportunities.

“I don’t blame offense becuase this will happen when you meet good pitcher”

    Are you talking about Blanton?

I won’t be caught by no-name-pitcher.I judge this base on his performance tonight, but i agree with you about offense. We need to give pitchers more runs to work with. It’s kind of painful to watch low score game. That’s why i believe Clement will sign either Yankees or Redsox.

I like the move of putting in Mariano in the tied game because if you waited for a save situation and he coughs up a run and the game is tied again, he is stuck in there until the thing is done.

Best to get him in and out and let Bruney carry the load.

As for overworking the pen I think Torre has done a good job. He has had to use everyone a lot because the starters have struggled (nothing he can do about that despite some people here blaming him?!?), but he has gone back to Farns even after his struggles, has used Myers for full innings and not overworked Mariano or Proctor. So far so good.

Lets just hope Pettitte can go at least 7 innings.

I think the pen will be OK though because Kartens and Wang are on the way back and Igawa, Muss and Andy will routinely go 7 innings once they settle into a groove.
Once we get there this is the deepest pen we’ve had in at least 5 or 6 years.

I think our pen will be the difference between us and Boston this year.

that was one of the most nerve wracking games of the year so far. thank god Giambi caught a hold of one late. he needed that. hell, i needed that. god, it’s only april.

I question why Torre took Rasner out as early as he did. Pitch count was fine. Bullpen was worked hard the night before. Why not ride Rasner a little longer.
