Pregame chatter: Jeff Karstens is in the house and will travel with the team up to Boston. He won’t be activated until Saturday. I would suspect that’ll mark the end of Chris Britton’s tenure but not necessarily. It will depend whether they want to keep Rasner as a long reliever. … Here’s is today’s game story on the exploits of A-Rod. The notebook has news on Chase Wright, Hideki Matsui, Jorge Posada and others.

  2. Paul.. April 19th, 2007 at 10:51 am

1:05 games on a dreary Thursday make the work day SOOO much better whn you can dial in and make believe you are actually doing work. Solid.

  3. Todd Drew April 19th, 2007 at 10:58 am

Work? There’s a game today. Pack up and head to the Bronx.

  4. Wolf In Pinstripes April 19th, 2007 at 11:16 am

Agreed, Paul. I will have the MLB.TV video running in the background behind some Excel spreadsheet or whatever throughout the afternoon.

Looks like ESPN picked up the series opener with Boston tomorrow as well. I was already excited about Fox having Saturday’s game on, but now I’m double stoked.

  5. saucy April 19th, 2007 at 11:20 am

the only thing i like about weekday-daygames is that i can fast forward the commercials as soon as i get home. other than that i’m staying off the internet after 1. bah.

  6. Jake April 19th, 2007 at 11:22 am

I can only imagine what I would do if I lived in Chicago and was a Cubs fan. I’d never get work done after 1pm.

  7. Jeff NJ April 19th, 2007 at 11:39 am

I for one like the day game, I can follow it all day and since my DVR is taping it, I can fast forward to the good parts later and still have time to play with my dog and service the wife.

  8. Paul.. April 19th, 2007 at 11:58 am

    “service” the wife…..

  9. Ryan April 19th, 2007 at 12:16 pm

I can’t understand why they would demote Rasner or Britton when you can squeeze another start out of Wright on Saturday, then activate Karstens on Sunday and send Wright to AAA. This way, you could keep Rasner.

  10. skisan April 19th, 2007 at 12:17 pm

“Posada is one of four active players to hit his first 200 homers for the same manager.”

I know this was the Aflac trivia quiz, but the way it’s worded, it’s wrong. Alex also his his 1st 200 homers for the same manager – Sweet Lou.

  11. Jeff NJ April 19th, 2007 at 12:25 pm

Wright couldn’t pitch on Saturday, it’s short rest. Besides they might need Wright on Friday the 27th if Moose isn’t ready.

  12. Fred Zeppelin April 19th, 2007 at 12:25 pm

    Actually, Alex had:

    Year – HR
    1994 – 0
    1995 – 5
    1996 – 36
    1997 – 23
    1998 – 42
    1999 – 42
    2000 – 41
    Total – 189

  13. skisan April 19th, 2007 at 12:39 pm

    I stand corrected.

  14. Reality April 19th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

Wright will just have to go down on Tuesday when Wang comes back, so it really doesn’t matter

  15. sammy April 19th, 2007 at 1:02 pm

just to clarify (and I could get this somewhere more accessible, but I choose not to):

ESPN has Friday and Sunday night’s games.
    Fox has Saturday’s.

    is that right?

  16. jennifer April 19th, 2007 at 1:10 pm

oh great i have to listen to all of them kiss bostons butt!

  17. saucy April 19th, 2007 at 1:13 pm

still on YES on Friday. ESPN if you’re out of market.

    only on ESPN on sunday…

  18. Russell April 19th, 2007 at 1:14 pm

The Nationals have a better record than the Phillies… hahahahahahaha

  19. kasey April 19th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

rasner’s curveball is awful so far today.

by the way, whoever asked if i was the same “kasey” who posted something about the sox winning the series on a red sox blog – no. i’ve never posted anything on a red sox blog. i can’t imagine what i would have to say in that forumn.

  20. saucy April 19th, 2007 at 1:19 pm

“The Nationals have a better record than the Phillies… hahahahahahaha”

and my dumb ass drafted Tom Gordon in my phantasy league…

  21. mel April 19th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

    Nice DP by Canoe!

    kasey,

That was me. Spelled same way, lower case. Good to know, though. Thx.

  22. sammy April 19th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

THIS IS NOT SAID IN PANIC. I REPEAT: THIS IS NOT SAID IN PANIC.

Has Underdog ever NOT struck out when he was down 0-2?
It’s almost like he has a green light when he’s that far behind in the count just to give a heave-ho on the next pitch, regardless of where it will be.

JUST AN OBSERVATION. THIS IS NOT SAID IN PANIC.
We now return to our regularly broadcasted blogging.

  23. SJ44 April 19th, 2007 at 1:35 pm

To answer your question, yes. He was down 0-2 to Chris Ray before battling back to hit the grand slam to beat the Orioles 10 days ago.

  24. anaconda April 19th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

I think the HR A-Rod hit to the opposite field in MIN was on an 0-2 pitch.

I guess his current historic pace isn’t enough for some people.

The ML average hitting with an 0-2 count is something like .120 or lower.

  25. Doreen April 19th, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Well, I guess Carmona’s gonna win today. Kay just started spouting off about how he’s got the longest losing streak going. 0-11.

  26. mel April 19th, 2007 at 1:45 pm

There goes Kay the Jinxer talking about Carmona’s losing streak which is the longest in MLB.

  27. mel April 19th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

Kay brings the jinx. O’neill brings the luck. Base hit for Melky.

  28. Doreen April 19th, 2007 at 1:48 pm

And Nieves should get a hit today, based on the same Kay “jinx” logic!

  29. kris April 19th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

    Kasey:

At least Rasner is competing in spite of his stuff. I am just glad we don’t have a pitcher who gives up 5 runs in the first two innings, like back then with Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, etc.

  30. Jamie April 19th, 2007 at 2:02 pm

Both mlb and espn gamecasts are stuck at the end of the second. What is going on? Is there a delay or something?

  31. Jamie April 19th, 2007 at 2:03 pm

Nevermind, just after I sent that they both skipped to the bottom of the 3rd. Stupid internet.

  32. sammy April 19th, 2007 at 2:08 pm

anaconda – I guess the prelude and postlude in between the observation aren’t enough to get harped on by someone looking to retort angrily.

not stating anything but just something I noticed.
twice last night… once today… he’s been in an 0-2 hole, and I just noticed that he’s taken a fairly big hack at either the very next pitch, or the pitch after that.

hey, he’s got nine homeruns. His last one, he hit 350 feet practically with one hand.

that’s nine more than I have for the year.
that’s one more that I’ve hit more than 10 feet in the air with one hand.

I like having Underdog on our team.
    believe that.

just stating something that I saw.
    that’s all.

  33. Paul.. April 19th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

A – Rod is -5 lifetime against Carmona with 5 K’s – so if and when he goes 0-5 today, and does not get it a hit, this will be the first time this season when Arod has to bounce back after having a nill day. Nice problem to have, I know, but this is when Alex goes into submission – lets hope he really can bounce back from a horrible day at the plate.

Delucci looks alot skinner from his 28 HR – roids?

  34. Adam April 19th, 2007 at 2:21 pm

Brian Bruney is the new Scott Proctor/ Tom Gordon/ Paul Quantrill/ Tanyon Sturtze/ Ron Villone, meaning he’ll have no arm left come the postseason. Since when did he turn into this team’s long reliever? I thought that’s the whole reason we have Henn.

  35. Jeff NJ April 19th, 2007 at 2:22 pm

Ok looks like the Darrell Rasner experiment is coming to a quick end. He will be demoted when Karstens is activated. Then Briton when Wang. Wright stays until Pavano gets back, talk about job security.

  36. Jeff NJ April 19th, 2007 at 2:24 pm

I take that back, he or Karstens will go when Moose gets back.

As for using Bruney. The Yankees have no standard long relievers at this time, any pitcher not named Mo or Vizcaino will pitch at any time.

  37. Erick April 19th, 2007 at 2:25 pm

    Great way to recover

  38. Cumberberg April 19th, 2007 at 2:25 pm

I’m watching this game a fracking computer, so I’m losing out on the drama — must’ve been nice to see Rasner strike out Peralta swinging with the bases loaded!

  39. Jer April 19th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

I second that Cumberberg. Gameday really kills the excitment of the game. Would’ve love to have seen that k.

  40. Wolf In Pinstripes April 19th, 2007 at 2:32 pm

I’ve officially declared today to be “opposite day”. Therefore, any jinxes the announcers bring on will end up in NY’s favor.

  41. Wolf In Pinstripes April 19th, 2007 at 2:34 pm

Well, well – the Melkman is out for deliveries today, huh? Too bad he’s got Nieves batting behind him to keep the air circulated around home plate.

  42. Erick April 19th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

Man, sometimes without Posada, on the line-up it feels like we have three number nine hitters.

Thankfully Cabrera is young and seems to be comming around from a bad start.

  43. Cumberberg April 19th, 2007 at 2:38 pm

No offense to Melk (still my hero after robbing that home run from Manny last year), but I really miss having Mats in the line up. I’m hoping he’ll finish his rehab without a hitch.

  44. Jeff NJ April 19th, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Those who read this board know I am an ardent defender of the way Torre is handling the bullpen this year, but taking out Rasner this early is worrisome especially going to Fenway tomorrow. He’s not pitching that bad, I don’t like this move.

  45. Cumberberg April 19th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

It’s so funny that Myers is one of Torre’s go-to guys now. There was a stretch last year that seemed like weeks where he was no where to be found. I’d have sworn that he’d been injured, in hiding, abducted by aliens…

  46. Erick April 19th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

I agree Jeff. But he did get into trouble in the 4th so you can see Torre´s reasoning after a single.

The way Rasner´s been pitching, maybe he can be turned into the long man.

  47. kris April 19th, 2007 at 2:43 pm

Rasner is pitching well right now it seems. I think they should let him show he can do it at Fenway. Karstens is still rusty from his stay on the DL, and he is essentially identical to Rasner in terms of stuff.

  48. Erick April 19th, 2007 at 2:45 pm

With guys like Britton, Bean, Beam, Karstens, Rasner and others who can play in the pen pretty well, one kind off hopes Cashman can ship Farnsworth for a prospect.

The alternative would be cheaper and easier on yankee fans nerves.

  49. Jer April 19th, 2007 at 2:46 pm

    I also agree Jeff.

As for Melky, I love the kid. I think he has a lot of petential and you cannot deny his defense. I hope the Yanks hold on to him because he can develop into a really strong hitter if given the opportunity.

  50. Erick April 19th, 2007 at 2:47 pm

    Kris,

Rasner would be on very short rest if he was to pitch instead of Karstens, one days rest. Two days for sunday.

  51. kris April 19th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

    Erick:

Sorry for my idiotic comment. I totally forgot.

  52. Chris NY April 19th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Rasner got out of trouble in the 4th, I don’t get why he’s not in the game…..

  53. hmmm April 19th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

it is NUTS to pull rasner right now heading into fenway.

  54. Erick April 19th, 2007 at 2:55 pm

    Kris,

I do agree with you however, Karstens and Rasner have very similar stuff. Karstens just had a better spring. When all the starters are healed up, Hughes gets called up and maybe Clemens is signed it´ll be crowded. I think the two of them become nice long relief/spot starter options.

With all the talent coming in and the names already signed, they are cheap nice options to have. However I think they will ultimately get converted to the pen due to a lack of room or traded.

  55. Jer April 19th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

This is why you keep Rasner in…

  56. Erick April 19th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

Bruney is money in the bank!!!

Man if Joe could just, somehow, someway, not burn bullpen pitchers by the break.

  57. Bill April 19th, 2007 at 4:01 pm

    Luis was very effective today.
