More on A-Rod’s start

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 20, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Just did a little checking. Alex Rodriguez didn’t hit his 12th home run last season until May 27. His 30th RBI didn’t come until May 19.

Of his 22 hits this season, 17 have been for extra bases.

If you’re Roger Clemens watching this game from your couch in Texas, how do you not sign with the Yankees?

Give this team a rotation of Wang, Pettitte, Mussina and Clemens come July 1 and it really won’t matter who the No. 5 is.

HaHa, it was a foot race between Ortiz & Pettitte.

  2. Dave in Pizza Hut April 20th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

so where’s ARod now on that list of most homeruns in first 15 games? is he tied with Schmidt?

  3. Kevin April 20th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

All I can say is wow, I’m surprised that anyone is even pitching to Arod.

  4. Dave in Pizza Hut April 20th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

man, I’m sick of Nancy. where’s that shoulder problem of his when you need it.

  5. LCâ„¢ April 20th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Roger isnt signing with anyone but the Yankees IMO. There just isnt any way. How many pitches has Andy thrown?

  6. DL April 20th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

    Dave -

I think I just heard the ESPN announcers say that 12 homeruns in the first 15 games is a major league record. But you’ll have to double check me on that one.

  7. Dave in Pizza Hut April 20th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

    thans DL

  8. mel April 20th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

    Dave,

    Working or eating?

  9. Rocco April 20th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

    Pettitte has 86 pitches.

  10. Wouter April 20th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

    One more Andy!

  11. Yankeefaninwooosta April 20th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

    Dear A-rod,
Hope you are enjoying your trip. We miss you back here on earth.

P.S. I hate watching games on NESN, although I’ll take what I can get in this godforsaken place.

P.P.S. Send some New York pizza

  12. Dave in Pizza Hut April 20th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

    Neither. Pretending.

  13. sunny615 April 20th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

I don’t understand legalese – but if I interpret the baseball rules/gobbledigook right, if Crisp makes the catch, arod is out.

  14. mel April 20th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

    Dave,

Lol. I’ll pretend I’m sitting in a Dunkin’ Donuts in Boston and that Schilling just walked in.

  15. hello?offense? April 20th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

    If Pettitte blows this lead…

  16. sunny615 April 20th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

what is wrong with crisp? why does he jerk around like that when he’s batting. he looks twitchy.

  17. sunny615 April 20th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Maybe it’s HGH or greenie withdrawal?

  18. Andrew April 20th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Hey, if the number 5 guy is Igawa and he throws like he threw in his last start, I don’t think we’ll be complaining :)

  19. hello?offense? April 20th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

    Here comes the meltdown.

  20. Rocco April 20th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

    C’mon Andy!!

  21. Angel April 20th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

    Oh come on, umpire..

  22. Rocco April 20th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Schilling didn’t get that call so i’ll let it slide once… as long as the ump is consistent.

  23. Chris NJ April 20th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Nice pitching by Andy to strike out Pena.

  24. Harley April 20th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Stupid Joe. We’re gonna need the pen the next two days.

  25. Jeff NJ April 20th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

I hate to say it again, but I think Torre has too quick of a hook again today. It’s one thing when it’s Darrell Rasner, but he should trust Pettitte to clean up his own mess. I fear Boston will come back and A Rod will have to hit his 3rd home run to get us the win.

  26. Angel April 20th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

    He has 101 pitches… sheesh.

  27. DL April 20th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

Joe is notorious for pulling his starters early, but in this case I think it’s wise to be careful this early in the season. The starters are still building up their strength, and with his previous elbow problems, the LAST thing we want is Pettitte getting hurt.

  28. Harley April 20th, 2007 at 9:26 pm

Yep. And Pettitte’s been murder on right handers tonite.

  29. Frank April 20th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

I like the move that Torre has made. Pettitte is at 100 pitches and there is still only 1 out. Let Proctor come in and clean it up, before it gets out of hand.

  30. Maddog April 20th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

    Hello Yankee PITCHING!!

  31. DL April 20th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

I’m not going to lie – I am terrified every time A-Rod is under a high pop up.

  32. Harley April 20th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Really? I dunno. Proctor’s arm is in far greater danger than Pettitte’s if we’re talking overuse. Seems like Andy could’ve finished the inning. But hard to argue with success.

  33. Jeff NJ April 20th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Good movement on Proctor’s pitches. I always think it will turn to midnight and Proctor will turn to Tanyon Sturtze. But it looks like he has really developed.

  34. sunny615 April 20th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

    yeah – great meltdown…

  35. Neil M April 20th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Do people get a kick out of knocking Joe – who is just trying to win games?

  36. sunny615 April 20th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

    bullpen time

  37. ChrisNYC April 20th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

    hello?offense?

your comments, aside from being pathetically bitter and lonely are: zzzzzzz. tired.

go rent a movie. try dumb and dumber. which one do you identify with… ?

  38. Jeff NJ April 20th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

No but it’s a discussion board so we can discuss it. I don’t reccomend that Torre or any of the players read any boards. They would all go insane.

  39. Maddog April 20th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Schilling is now out of the game. Time to sit and eat his HOHO!

  40. LCâ„¢ April 20th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Who wants to bet Curt posts on his blog that Varitek made him throw those pitches to Arod?

  41. sunny615 April 20th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

    will arod homer again?

  42. sunny615 April 20th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

how does the ump call that a strike for romero and not for pettitte?

  43. Jeff NJ April 20th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

Another extra base hit for A Rod. Unreal.

  44. sunny615 April 20th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

    wow. a-fire.

  45. Paulâ„¢ April 20th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Proctor threw 6 pitches and snuffed out a rally. Andy was looking tired.

Some fan criticize Joe Torre out of reflex without giving it thought.

  46. chazzh April 20th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Does JD Drew have Johnny Damon’s arm? Nice 15 hopper to home plate. WOW.

  47. Frank April 20th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

I agree. Pettitte battled all night, I would rather bring Proctor in early before he or Myers has to face Ortiz with 2 men on and a one run lead.

  48. Dave in Pizza Hut April 20th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

did I sense a collective disappointment there when ARod didn’t hit another one out?

  49. Cumberberg April 20th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

Jeezus. A-Rod is having a monster game. And against Boston. And at Fenway. Thank you, A-Rod — your at bats have been a lot of fun to watch after a long day at work.

  50. Wouter April 20th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

Doubles are also a good sign Dave, plus he came around to score anyway, didn’t he?

  51. DL April 20th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Haha, I think we’re all a bit spoiled by A-Rod, but not so much that we won’t take a double.

  52. R.B. April 20th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

    J.C. Romero rules. :lol

  53. mel April 20th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Nieves needs to learn some plate discipline, take some pitches at least. Need to learn from DJ, Abreu, and Giambi.

Did something happen to Romero? Why did they take him out of the game? Did he get his head bashed in?

  54. Rocco April 20th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

    ONLY A DOUBLE?!?!? BOOOOOOOOO

    i kid i kid

  55. Jeff NJ April 20th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

    Hello?RedSox?Offense? Where is it?

  56. Dave in Pizza Hut April 20th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

I mean this is just unreal; the only way it can get any better is if he hits one every time up and then does a triple play on the defensive side.

  57. Maddog April 20th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

    Damon ‘s due!!

  58. Wouter April 20th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Too bad, I wanted Johnny to hit a GS here

  59. Rocco April 20th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

at least arod will get up again :)

  60. Mr. White April 20th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

If I’m Clemens I definitely sign with the Yankees. Let’s forget everything except personal relationships. I cant see him getting along with anyone on Boston, who’s he gonna hang out with, Manny? Wily Mo? JD? Papi?

With the Yankees he has his good buddy Andy, and he knows Jeter, Mo, Giambi, and Jorge from his time with the team. Plus he played with Tony Pena back in the day and under Torre too, so its more of a known quantity than Boston.

Seems like a no brainer he’d go to either NY or stay in comfortable Houston. I cant see him choosing Boston.

  61. mary ellen April 20th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Looks like Papi might need oxygen.

  62. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

I will say this: at least Myers only threw two pitches…
… and, more so, didn’t walk Ortiz.
    :)

    kidding.

  63. Mr. White April 20th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

    dang wrong thread, sorry

  64. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

well, at least Vizcaino won’t be for the rest of the series.

    c’mon, Luis…

  65. Stephen April 20th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

I don’t think Clemens will decide on a team based on who he’ll hang out with.

And really, I don’t know how much Pettitte will matter. For Clemens, it’ll be the ability to win, the money and whether he gets (or can live without) the same sweet no-travel deal he had with Houston.

  66. Mr. White April 20th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

ah christ, its the right one :)

  67. Jennifer April 20th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

He should have left scott in there!

  68. Dave in Pizza Hut April 20th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

forget Fat Papi. Just don’t elevate your ERA Vizcaino.

  69. Frank April 20th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

The only problem that I see with Luis is that he walks too many hitters…I seemed like he was afraid to throw to Manny.

  70. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

… Mr. White, you’re in the right spot.
as far as 22 goes… I think Pete’s on the money here. How is he NOT watching this game, and seeing this, thinking…

“huh. And I’d get to play with him everyday? Uh… okay.”

just to reinforce his thought, he turns on the Astros game, and sees Carlos Lee hit his 26th flyball to the warning track.

and, in his heart of hearts, Clemens knows what he needs to do.

    welcome back, Rocket.

  71. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

… do I agree with Karl Ravich?
why did Viz throw him a breaking ball at 3-2?
throw him your best pitch, and see if he hits it.
he’s at .189 right now, for cryin’ out loud.

I can’t believe I just agreed with Karl Ravich.

  72. Rocco April 20th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

why do i have a feeling veritek is going to hurt us :|

  73. mel April 20th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

So now it’s a save situation for MO.

  74. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

    … okay… I’m just saying.
    don’t go get Mo, Joe.
    let this happen.

    … darn it.
    all to heck.

  75. Angel April 20th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Every dog has his day, Sammy, lol.

He had a good point though.

  76. Rocco April 20th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

LOL so much for a *ONE* inning pitcher… this should be interesting!

  77. Frank April 20th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

I think Proctor needs to pitch the 8th and leave Farnsworth and Luis for the 7th, because it is clear that you cannot have Luis pitch the 8th when he walks that many people.

  78. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

who had the over/under for Joe’s, “I’ll never bring Mo in for more than one inning” at 20 days?

    anyone?

  79. mel April 20th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

Technically, 5 outs is not 2 innings, right? lol.

  80. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

and… Pete… does this mean that you and Joe disagree that these games don’t matter?

  81. Jennifer April 20th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

what about Bruney?? someone else should have started that inning!

  82. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

    mel… valid point.
I’m sure that will be Joe’s message tonight.
    :)

  83. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

all right… double play ball right here.
    done and done.

  84. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

    … well…
    … there we go.

at least we have A-Rod next inning.

  85. Rocco April 20th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

    CRAP

  86. Mr. White April 20th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

    crap

  87. Mr. White April 20th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

    my thoughts exactly rocco

  88. KMT April 20th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Mo did this early last year against the Sox too. Over the last few years they’ve had his number. They are not the least bit intimidated by Mo. Come on boys. Five more outs. You can do it.

  89. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

    f;alskdjfa;lskdjfal;svnmza;slkcvh[‘ow

  90. mel April 20th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

    blown save

  91. Jennifer April 20th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

Peter ask Joe if he forgot about a pitcher named Brian Bruney? why did he bring in Luis??

  92. Jeff NJ April 20th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

unreal. Second guessing time, why’d he take out Proctor so quick?

  93. SJ44 April 20th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

This game is entirely on the game management of Joe Torre.

You pull Giambi out of the game for Thompson, and not have Nieves bunt. It ends up costing you a run.

Then, why Myers to Ortiz? You have a 4 run lead??? Just have Proctor pitch to Ortiz and Manny. They can’t hit grand slams with nobody on base. Nope. You waste Myers and you have nobody to pitch to Drew.

Then, it all collapses by doing what he says he wasn’t going to do and that’s pitch Mariano in the 8th inning because blew through his bullpen options.

He may be a great manager of people but, he is a horrible, and I mean, horrible game manager.

    Just cost them this game.

They walk Arod in the 9th because Kevin Thompson is on deck.

    Just idiotic at all levels.

  94. sammy April 20th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

    all right.
patience at the plate, and let’s get this thing back.

    come on, boys.

  95. Mr. White April 20th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

poor mo, thats gotta sting a bit

  96. GuidryBall April 20th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

KMT you want to go back to that 5 game sweep and tell me how the Red Sox aren’t intimidated by MO. You were probably crying in your beer when he came into the game. Now you’re Mr. Confidence.

  97. Peter Simonetti April 20th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

My sources tell me that Thompson will be demoted after the game

  98. Tim April 20th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

If you are going to carry 2 first basemen to allow Giambi to DH, you are kind of conceding in doing so that he is an exceptional hitter, you then cannot pull him for a pinch runner (Kevin Thompson) then admitting that Giambi cannot only field but he cannot run the bases either. Joe is continually pulling Giambi for pinch runners only to have it come back and haunt him. Why are we carrying three first basemen?

  99. murphydog April 20th, 2007 at 11:02 pm

Ouch. Right here, in the heart.

Remember what we were saying about how only the media and the fans feel the hype over these “rivalry” games early in April? Obviously that was garbage. Sorry, Joe. I love you man, but you had a vapor lock tonight.

Ok, I’m over it. Turn the page. Take two Tylenol and see you tomorrow. Win two.

  100. David April 20th, 2007 at 11:06 pm

So typical of the A-Rod era. Whenever he has the memorable moment against Boston, we blow it. He had the go ahead homerun in game 4 against Boston in 04 and we blew it. Now tonight. His night will be forgotten and people will still say he’s never done anything against Boston.

  101. murphydog April 20th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

    David:

You’re wrong, dude. It’s because of what A-Rod did that this hurts sooo bad. His effort tonight will not be forgotten.

  102. David April 20th, 2007 at 11:18 pm

Murphy-I hope you are right, but I have so little faith in the people that continued to boo him up until a week ago.

  103. Dizzy April 21st, 2007 at 12:17 am

    BOOOOO!!!!BOOOOOO!!!!BOOOOOO!!!!
