Low standards at Fenway Park

Josh Beckett allowed four earned runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings and got a standing ovation from the pack of drunks fans here when he came off the field.
What would they have done if he had pitched well?
As for Alex Rodriguez, the 31 RBI this month match the best month of his career (August 2003). There are eight games left this month.

Here is my question…how come Torre did not keep Henn in the game. He only threw 8 pitches…is Torre saving him for tomorrow just in case Wright gets knocked out in the 2nd.
Low standards is right. Here’s a fun drinking game if you have to drive home after watching a Fenway game at a friend’s house or a bar. Take a drink every time you spot an African-American fan in the Fenway crowd.
Your sobriety is guaranteed.
And Harley made my day
Why is that? Does it have anything to do with ticket prices/small stadium?
Torre took Henn out to put Proctor in b/c it is a contractual obligation to blow out one relievers arm per year.
You can really see that Henn, Proctor and Bruney should be the A team pitching in games close or ahead, Farnsworth, Myers and Vizcaino should be the B team until further notice.
Jeff, I wouldn’t write Farnsworth off just yet.
As for the Sox fans applauding Beckett, I can understand it. He left with a lead against the Yankees after a rough start. Can’t really blame them for that.
I’d say thats why Frank. They have anothe rookie pitcher going tomorrow and they might need the pen again then too.
Yeah but Wright is a lefty, why would they bring iin a lefty to replace him? I’m hoping for Wright straight to Mo.
Atta boy, Farny! Maybe I’m crazy, but still hold out hope that Farnsworth will get it together.
Henn pitched 1 inning on the 18th. He pitched one inning on the 19th. He pitched today, as we all can see.
Torre is going to “save” Henn if Wright gets knocked up real quick? Henn will probably get knocked up too if he pitches tomorrow.
Farnymania! But was that last fastball really 88 mph?
I wonder if Wil Nieves could surprise everyone and get a hit?
Col,
If Wright doesn’t last long tomorrow, who else would you use as a long man? Colter Bean?
Farnsworth is pitching in a situation that doesn’t matter. He still stinks.
And nobody has lower standards that the Yanks by having the worst bench players in the history of the game!
And the reporters have low standards for brown-nosing Torre just because he’s a nice guy. And even Pete won’t criticize Rivera (although he spit the bit and choked bigtime..not the first time against Boston, either) because he’s a nice guy and answers questions. So much for the tough NY sportswriters….a bunch of pussycats, imo.
That would be a surprise, being that Damon is pinch hitting for him.
HO, go away already.
phelps will be catching for the first time in six yrs if this game goes to the bottom of the ninth.
Better him then Cairo
Can’t it be “helped” to be gotten rid of? It’s been told to go away twice already and still insists on turning up here it’s not wanted.
McCarver stinks. “Papelbon looks down, then up at the hitter, and it is so ‘direct.’” What does that exactly mean. He’s not exactly Dave Stewart.
You want us to get inside McCarvers head to find out what he means? lol
I dont think they’ve invented a flashlight bright enough that could see anything in a cave that deep and empty.
why would myers be the B team of the relief corps? Because he gave up a hit to DO (One of the best hitters in the sport.) He has an era under 2 and has given up 3 hits this season. What more can u ask for in eight innings of work? Bruney wont have a 0 ERA all yr and vizcaino will bounce back. Farnsy is just a waste of money but hes got nasty stuff. Eventually he should come around. Dont expect Tom gordon but a 3.5 era for the season wouldnt shock me.
mccarver is a grade A idiot.
F U papelbon!
Jeff Karstens=the anti-player of the game.
Stupid Fenway park.
Has there ever been a player better suited for his home ball park than Ortiz? Brilliant signing by Theo.
“mccarver is a grade A idiot.”
yeah dave, he’s spent his whole life in baseball and you make posts on a baseball blog. think about it.
Yea, stupid Fenway fans, how dare they cheer their pitcher for leaving the game with the lead vs the best offense in baseball, what were they thinking. They should boo the MVP of the league, and the greatest closer ever, like we do at Yankee Stadium, we are real fans baby!
Joe Morgan has spent his whole life around baseball…it doesn’t make his a great announcer any more than McCarver’s experience.
I remember reading a while ago that McCarver was upset with Steinbrenner and the Yankees after he was fired as an announcer. Maybe there’s still some animosity.
I had to watch the game on mute because I was so frustrated by the announcing tandem.
someone says he has a cavernous hold instead of a brain and you make a comment about me randy. Just because someone is an announcer doesnt mean they are smart. Im sure you can think of a couple off the top of your head and what is wrong with posting in a blog. players do it …
Pete,
A weird comment – what’s wrong with cheering your pitcher when he stands to get the win, especially after facing the game’s best lineup and best hitter? If it were our starter leaving the game in such circumstances, I’d give him a hand too.
That was not the best offense in baseball out there today — give me a break. He had Melky, Minky, Thompson and Nieves out there. Put Damon, Posada and Matsui back in, fine, but this was merely a GOOD lineup today.
As a Yankees Fan, I think It’s over, yankees doesn’t starting pithing to compete with Redsox.
considering the boston fans cheered every.single.strike thrown like it was the last out of the game, i’m not surprised they gave beckett a standing ovation. despite losing this game, we did have a pretty good outing against beckett all things considered and i feel good about probably facing him again next week in the bronx when we are healthier
hj,
I do not think that you can make any comparisons about the starting pitching. Three of our starting pitchers are on the DL, and even with their best pitchers out there we still hit them pretty hard. Even today with Damon, Matsui and Jorge not in the lineup we still hit him.
A win tomorrow makes the weekend and the week worthwhile.
Remember this people. We’ve had one pitcher start games this week who’s not a rookie. Andy P.
Wright, Karstens, Rasner, Iggy
So relax. Wangers back this week. matsui is back this week. Moose is back in 10 days. And Pavano is rehabbing!
I am encouraged by how well the Yankees have hit Boston’s starting pitching, particularly today with the absence of Damon, Posada and Matsui from the line-up. I don’t think those 12 at bats would have made for an easier game from Beckett, on the contrary. I also think Karstens gave a pretty good performance when you consider it was his first since spring, he is coming off an injury and it was after in Fenway. Give the kid a break. Yankees played well today all things considered. And not 1 error. Wait until we get them in the Bronx next weekend.
No world is coming to an end!!!!!!!
just some rebutals of some idiotic comments; the yank bench..
Melky is a pretty damn good 4th outfielder, watch..
yes there backup catcher cannot hit; besides the Mets backup catcher name 2 good backup catchers? Do not say Mirabelli regardless of what FOX says the guy hit less then 210 last year.
Kevin Thompson could also be a adequate backup OF.
Infield we will see; Give Phelps some time..Cairo can run and is versatile, his hitting not too good..
It is a long season…
The Yanks offense is even better then last year; they will have Abreu for the whole year, Matsui for many more games then last year, Cano is a year older, and Arod is out of his friggin mind…………..Giambi looks like he will have another good year also……
I hope Yankees Released Mike Myers. I have more faith in Sean Henn than Myers who strikeout Big Papi
Plenty of time for the rotation to come together. Wang, Pettitte, Clemens, and Mussina will work just fine.
It’s hard to get on Karstens for his performance, since the organization hung him out to dry. How do you bring him up to pitch against the Sox with just FOUR innings of rehab work? That’s ridiculous. He was actually much worse today than even his lousy numbers show. It’s only by a miracle that he didn’t give up an additional three home runs. He’s an extreme fly ball pitcher and they were teeing off on him.
I don’t dislike Karstens, but I still feel Rasner is a better pitcher. But apparently because Karstens was drafted by the Yanks, and Rasner is from another organization, they seem to favor Karstens (this is just an assumption — because I can’t figure another reason — it’s certainly not talent/performance).
It probably made more sense to bring up Clippard or Ohlendorf to pitch the game today.
I also do not blame Karstens for this outing I also do not blame the Yanks they do not have many options.
They have started 4 rookie pitchers this week!!!!!!With Sundays game it will be 5 games out of 7 started by 4 different rookies…..They have 3 starting pitchers out of the lineup..
They will be fine. I really like this team.. They have alot going for them…..
Stuart,
I agree. I think once everyone gets healthy this team is poised to make a strong post-season run. We have the hitting and we have the pitching debth that we have lacked in the past. The Yankees have always started out slow and then when it is time to pick it up we pick it up. I also do not think that Karsens had a bad outing, you could see that he is not afraid to throw strikes which is important. Once he gets a few more innings underneath him he will be fine and may turn out to be a solid pitcher.
Jeter is never a HR threat
Its a shame that Jeter gets superstar treatment yet he’s never a threat to take a pitcher yard when the game is on the line. Pitchers don’t fear Jeter’s base hits. Boston’s closer when right at him with his best stuff cause he knows Jeter won’t take him.
Jeter is not strong enough to catchup on 98mph fastball and get hit from Power Pitchers like Schilling and Papelbon. Jeter only weighs 195 pounds? I hope Jeter gain more muscle.
Stormy, you are dead on, I thought the kid gave them a quality game.
“yeah dave, he’s spent his whole life in baseball and you make posts on a baseball blog. think about it.”
McCarver is still an idiot.
It’s too early to make judements on karstens, he needs at least a year in the majors injury free.
i like karstens and i think the yanks rushed him but sweet jesus how was that a quality game?????
Take it from a long-time loyal Yankee (not “Yankees”)fan who lives near Boston:
Red Sox fans are complete idiots, who just love to HATE the Yanks and New York. I used to go to Fenway, but I know I’d lose it if I went there now…….all they have there are drunk idiots chanting “Yankees Suck”. They are the most biased, immature people in the world. They are truly sick people.
As for Beckett: He’s a immature punk – did you see his antics in the dugout while he was watching the rest of the game? What a total jerk ! I love it when the Yanks beat him up. Him and big-mouth Shilling. And Varitek, who’s a total coward – remember him sticking his glove in A-Rod’ face while still wearing his mask? Another total jerk.
There, I feel better.
I really don’t know why people are taking an issue with Pete’s comment. Since when is 4 earned runs in 6.2 innings a good start?
Jeter’s not a homerun threat but Papelbon remembers who beat him in game 4 of the Boston Masacre, and you should to. By the way, weight has nothing to do with it. Soriano weighs 180 lbs., and hit more homeruns last year than Giambi, Bonds, Glaus, Thomas, and Thome.
Karsten’s was not fooling anyone today, but Rasner definetely isn’t better. Compare their stats last year, and tell me why they would want Karsten’s in place of Rasner here.
This may just be me looking for a scapegoat, but Ortiz’s double that Abreu missed should have been caught. I’ve seen him misplay hits before, and he has enough speed to catch up with that.
My take on Cleveland not walking Alex:
That extra base runner was MEANINGLESS. A single wins the game when you down by one with 2nd and 3rd. Putting A-Rod on not only takes the bat out of his hands and puts it into Gimabis (who hasnt hit extremely well) but it also sets up a foce at each base making it easier if a ball is hit in the hole or a diving play. If I were the manager, seeing how hot Alex is, I owuld walk him every time to face Giambi especially with first baseopen. Right now, there would be no difference between Giambi v. a righty or A-Rod against a righty
Karsten’s success was a fluke last year and he doesn’t have any plus pitches. At least Rasner has a plus curve. I’ll take him over Karstens any time. That said, you couldn’t expect much from him today. It doesn’t really matter. This team is going to be healthy in two weeks and it won’t matter that we are 4 games out in April.
It takes more than the long ball to score runs and win. Jeter and Abreu are extremely valuable in their ability to get on base. Jeter also gets his fare share of extra base hits. Jeter is every bit the star with the consistency he brings to the plate and field–yes I said field.
I thought Boston had one of the best starting rotations in the bigs ESPN? What happened? Schilling got rocked, Beckett was craptastic, and Dice K does not have a hope in hell against this lineup… believe it.
Rasner stinks. The only thing working against Karstens is his lack of velocity. I think he spots the ball much better than Rasner and can find the strike zone.
Gonzo: the only thing that matters to ESPN is that the Red Sux won the game. Schilling and Beckett stunk it up but they won’t care because they will spin their performances in a positive light.
If We can score 5+ on Boston’s big three (38, B, and Dice), we will be fine.
“This may just be me looking for a scapegoat, but Ortiz’s double that Abreu missed should have been caught. I’ve seen him misplay hits before, and he has enough speed to catch up with that.”
Absolutely agree. Abreu was playing way too shallow. That ball should have been caught.
This may seem strange, but despite losing two (and quite possibly three after tomorrow) to the Sux, I feel pretty good. We banged up Shilling and Beckett, and did it without Matsui or Posada. Karstens will be better than we saw today. This was his first start, and IMO he really needed another rehab game. I feel relatively confident that once our starters get healthy and Mo gets cooking (which he will), that we are a better team.
A-Rod for Prez, you are absolutely right. Oh and did anyone catch that “What if the Red Sox trade Manny and A-Rod goes to the Red Sox” bullcrap FOX did mid-game and roundhouse kick something? Things are getting ridiculous.
I can’t believe some of the spelling and grammar that I’m seeing in the comments in this blog. What a joke. If you’re going to offer a retort, the least you can do is read over your comments before submitting them.
As much as I hate to say this, the Sox outplayed the Yankees today. I think we all agree that we could not have expected Karstens to be perfect out there, but had he been able to hold Boston’s offense to a few runs, then the Yankees would probably have won this one.
Oh well, on to the next one. I missed Wright’s first start earlier this week and am very much looking forward to see how he does tomorrow night.
No, the Red Sox outplayed Jeff Karstens.
The Yankees beat up on Josh Beckett, which was all I was asking for in this game.
Clearly the Sox’s pitching is not all it’s been cracked up to be. Except Papelbon. He’s legit, until he blows out his shoulder.
I have a good feeling about Chase. If he keeps his emotions in check i think we will be fine.
pete- i have to say that your continuous referral to RSN as “pack of drunks” is pretty stupid and unprofesional as a known “journalist?”
that said, i would say the beckett gave a quality start… at least one runscoring hit was of a wounded duck variety. and against the best lineup in baseball? since most of his games will be against everyone else.. cy young here we come! unless you think someone on the yanks is worthy?
Ric – There is a LOT to be said about the mean – spirited way the Red sox promote their team.
The “Fan of the Game” on their tv outlet (NESN) the other day was an Idiot who threw a piece of pizza at another drunk. The pizza tosser got publicity and the team promotes the angry mob mentality.
Their minor league affilliate in Lowell,MA actually has a promotion where any youth league that does away with “Yankees” as a team name get free uniforms. This is snactioned by the Boston Red Sox themselves.
The Red Sox Nation from top to bottom is a classless, angry lot.
Ric,
You’re right, but it’s just Peter trying to compensate for the fact that he’s actually a red sox fan by throwing out gratuitous insults to try and suck up to the Yanks fan base ( who in essence pay his salary)
I’m not sure if sverlyn or Ric ever see NESN, but “gratuitous insults” towards the Yankees is the modus operandi of the network. The Red Sox promote the hate. I live in Mass. and I see it every day.
Hey, I’m in favor of calling a spade a spade no matter who says it. Besides, this blog is not part of the stories he submits to the newspaper for printing, so he can say whatever he wants.
Secondly, Beckett is going to win the Cy Young?
Um, no. But that was a good one. The 2003 season is over.
Actually, the AL should just rename it the “Johan Santana Award” until further notice until his reign of dominance ends — much like the NL could have done for Maddux and Randy Johnson during their respective streaks of sheer dominance.
Of course, you can add Clemens to that list as well.
Actually, the other night I had the choice between watching the game on ESPN and NESN- ti was a no brainer. Remy gives a much more balanced take on the Yanks and the game than ESPN ever does
a rod is not human when he swing his bat a have a feeling of world series.
Sverlyn- Remy’s not the problem. His partner/ puppet couldn’t be objective if he tried. The producers at NESN promote the hate. They even have the 2 female hosts of their sports news program spew the propaganda. It’s pathetic.
Can you imaging the backlash if the Yankees agreed to buy new uniforms for any youth sports league that bans “Yankees” as a team name???
Just came across this link off of soxfan/yanksfan. Man thats a lot of excuses for a Boston sweep. Calling Sox fans hate spewing drunks and including the sox broadcast network is a little ridiculous…YES Network is one of the most biased company line spitting broadcasts ever…seriously. Any Yanks fan can admit it, NESN is the same. They root for the home team, as per their fanbase. And if its only April, why don’t one of you put in a call and remind ARod its April when he’s prancing around the basepaths like a pinstriped ballerina. “Look NY do you love me now??? How about now…pretty please?!”
