The Wanger ready to go

Peter Abraham
April
21

I do have some good news for those of you on the ledge.

Chien-Ming Wang threw a 55-pitch bullpen session in Tampa and has been cleared to start Tuesday’s game against the Devil Rays.

“I urge all people in Taiwan to buy the recent book written about me,” he said afterward. “In fact, buy several.”

OK, I made up that last part. But he did feel good after throwing. Adding a 19-game winner has to be helpful, right?

Sure… once Yankees get Wang, Mussina, Pavano, Matsui, Posada, and Damon back, they should be fine.

  2. Russell

If science could combine Phelps’ hitting with Minky’s defense, that would also help.

  3. Eric

If the Yanks could also combine Torre’s people skills with LaRussa’s strategy skills

  4. xryanx

Joe Torre is a moron. Brian Bruney in the 5th inning. Only he could do this. Amazing.

  5. Billy Mo

Pete, that’s great news to hear about Wang and get me on the list for it when it is printed in English. I need a favor from you on another topic. I don’t routinely get to ask Joe Torre questions so you’re my guy on this one. I have to know why on Earth after all these years would they continue to give Ortiz ANYTHING to hit? Better yet, ask him why they do not EVER brush him back high and tight or even throw it behind im or down at his feet to make him jump to make him uncomfortable in the box? He OWNS us. Are the Yankees afraid of him? It sure seems like it. The answer I am always given is that Manny is on deck. But over the years, the clutch hits and homers from Ortiz have led me to believe that I would rather go after Manny then Ortiz anyday(especially when first base is open like it was in the 1st inning…shocker he knocked one over Bobby’s head for 2 more RBI’s against us). It’s to the point now where I 100% expect him to hit a big HR against the Yanks in every game. The only way to get into Ortiz’s head is to challenge him inside, even to the point of knocking him down a few times. I’m sick of him constantly drilling us in big spots and I’m even more sick of seeing the Yankees refuse to change their strategy with him. Sorry for the rant, had to get it off my chest.

  6. realisticyankeefan

Well, I called the Karstens stinks outcome.

    And I’m calling sweep, too.

  7. vin

I think Bruney should be in the game right now… if the Sox score again the game would be pretty much over. Think of it as a 5th inning save. Of course if Cora comes through then Torre is in a idiot.

  8. harley

The Skipper has taken a good hard look at his pen and decided Bruney is best suited for mid-game hold and/or mop-up work.

I take it back. I won’t miss him that much.

  9. Michael

i think girardi should be the manager, torre mismanages the bullpen too much and is in love with pinch running giambi

  10. harley

Uhm, calling a sweep takes less than a large amount of brainpower after last night’s loss, and given the pitching matchups in the second two games. But hey. Congrats!

  11. realisticyankeefan

the enthusiasm for Wang should be tempered somewhat since he depends on a great deal of luck to be successful. since he can’t strike out batters to save his life, he needs balls to be hit right at people. we’ll see if that happens as much this season.

and the yanks will be far back in the distance in the division race come monday morning.

  12. MikeD

Ouch. Those little zingers at the end followed by a just kidding are painful.

  13. Angel

Pitchers who are “lucky” and rely on luck alone to get outs rarely win 19 games. No one’s luck holds that consistently.

  14. realisticyankeefan

“Uhm, calling a sweep takes less than a large amount of brainpower after last night’s loss, and given the pitching matchups in the second two games. But hey. Congrats!”

Hey, some people here though the yanks would win a game! I know you have to be braindead to think NY would win one of these games with the matchups, but people did.

  15. Jeff

Look, the Yanks are on their fourth rookie SP in a week, are playing without an all-star C, CF and LF and are just two (soon to be three) games back…and, oh, IT’S APRIL 21…CHILL OUT

  16. realisticyankeefan

NY will be 4 games out on Monday morining…not a good place to be.

That game last night might have been the turning point of the season, early though it may be.

  17. Kentucky Yankee

You have to be brain dead to think Pettite couldn’t turn in a competent performace vs Schilling?

  18. Otter

I agree with Billy Mo!! The only thing Ortiz is missing at the plate is some slippers and a cup of coffee. . . Let’s sign the Rocket to Knock his cocky butt off the plate!!!

  19. Peter Abraham

Realistic Yankees Fan (a.k.a Red Sox troll):

Enough is enough, dude. Take a walk.

  20. Dint

Turning point on April 20th? Do you watch baseball? There will be about four or five games that go for and against them in that fashion every year. In fact, in case you forgot the day before we came back from down 4 with 2 outs in the 9th. Why wasn’t that a turning point? Realistic my ass.

  21. Jeff

Ortiz K! that is why you pitch to him.

  22. harley

    Trade Meyers!!

  23. Dave

two weeks in the season is the turning point of the season? Get a life guy. These are the first fifteen pages of a 162 page novel – the turning point never happens in the first chapter.

Bringing in Bruney in the fifth was a good move. We are down by three runs in the fifth with no yankees hitting for four innings. We cant let up any more runs at that point.

Those 11 blown saves against the redsox may have something to do with the fact that we play the sox 19 games per season and about 4-7 games each post season almost every yr. I dont know just a wild guess. 11 blown isnt much considering MO has pitched against them hundreds of times.

  24. vin

Way to go, Henn! If he can handle Ortiz with any sort of consistency then he will always find himself a roster spot. Time will tell…
Remember Enrique Wilson, the alleged Pedro-Killer.

  25. harley

Seriously. What are Henn’s lefty/righty splits? Do we need Meyers if Henn continues to pitch this well?

  26. Dave

myers has given up 3 hits in almost 8 innings this season. He gave up one hit (Not HR just a hit) to Ortiz- I dunno one of the best hitters in baseball and he should be traded? Man, people know less and less about the yankees and baseball every time I come to this blog.

  27. harley

Uh, Dave. Might want to engage your sense of humor when posting. Thanks. That is all.

  28. Dint

    Lefties: 5 innings, 4 hits, no walks, 2 K 0.00 ERA

    Righties: 5.2 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, (1 earned), 1 BB, 1 K

  29. Dint

    1.59 ERA

  30. Kentucky Yankee

First time Ortiz has seen him…Henn has looked pretty good though in general this season, glad he got the roster spot over Villone.

  31. Jeff

wow beckett is really getting off easy today w/o our big guns

  32. harley

Dint, thanks. I hope he keeps a spot in the pen. It’ll be interesting to watch him develop.

  33. vin

I love the intentional walk to Man-Ram… I am a big believer in pitching to EITHER Oritz OR Man-Ram each time through the order, when possible. There’s no point in pushing your luck with these two monsters, especially with a lefty pitching who can face Nancy Drew.

  34. Dave

Where am I supposed to realize your kidding. People are actually that dumb who post in this blog. Hard to believe I know.

  35. Jeff NJ

Ok guys there is good news, I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance! No actually, here’s the Yankee good news. Chase Wright is the real deal, he is going to do well tomorrow and is now scheduled to pitch Friday’s game against Boston in the stadium. After that Mussina will be back and Karstens will be in AAA. Wright will replace Pavano and is here to stay. Next time a rookie is needed it will be Phil Hughes. Not too many teams can rebuild on the fly (local example NY Knicks) but we’re doing it, yeah I’ll say it, this a rebuilding year, but we will still make the playoffs. The future is bright.

  36. Dave

Here we go – try to not hate arod if he doesnt get a homer in this situation – he is not a god.

  37. harley

When complaining about how dumb people are, it is always best not to confuse ‘your’ with ‘you’re’.

As for Meyers, he’s a necessary part of the pen. At the moment. But if Henn develops into a younger, more efficient, and more versatile option? Then sure, you could consider moving him. I’ve never been a big fan of LOOGY pitchers, so I’m biased. But I still dream of the second coming of Mike Stanton. Maybe Henn’s the real deal.

    We’ll see.

  38. Otter

    He might be a GOD!

  39. vin

What, no homer A-Rod? YOU STINK! lol
    Even his singles are crushed.

  40. Jeff NJ

5 Earned Runs and 6 and 1/3, thats even bad for 5.00 Beckett

  41. harley

    So who pitches to Giambi?

  42. harley

    Okajima, the Sequel.

  43. vin

    >>Chase Wright is the real deal, he is going to do well tomorrow and is now scheduled to pitch Friday’s game against Boston in the stadium.

  44. Anthony

We really need some pitching. We should not be losing games when our offense manages to score 5 runs or more. It’s just ridiculous. Thank God Wang will be back, let’s hope he can keep opposing teams to 4 runs or less.

  45. Dave

Look at his numbers against righties this yr- Meyers isnt really a LOOGY. He had better numbers against righties last yr and ioutstanding numbers over all this yr.

Sorry I didnt realize bad grammer was so frowned upon in a yankee blog. You would need more than two hands to count the number of grammaticaly errors in the last 30 some posts.

Henn was not very good in triple A so I remain skeptical. This is far too small a sample to start comparing Henn to stanton or even to consider him a permanent part of the bullpen we will see.

Jeff, what makes you so confident of wright? He was good, not great last game. I would think the yanks would wait to see how good he does tomorrow before allowing him to pitch next weekend.

  46. vin

apparently two consecutive left arrows don’t get processed correctly, but my full post was:

“Chase Wright is the real deal, he is going to do well tomorrow and is now scheduled to pitch Friday’s game against Boston in the stadium.”

I can’t imagine Wright pitching well against a patient lineup like the Sox. He got a lot of swings and misses from a free-swinging Indians lineup. Hopefully I’m wrong.

  47. BBFan

With experience, Henn has the potential to develop in to a Stanton type pitcher as early as later this year. With the success he is having, all he needs to do is build confidence. We will not need Meyers next year. Depening on how the starting pitching develops, Chase Wright may be the second lefty in the bull pen next year.

  48. Dave

why didnt cash go after okajima? he had excellent numbers in japan and we were desparately searching for a FA lefty out of the pen before we gave villone a second shot. I said this exact same post when the sox signed okajima in the off season.

  49. harley

How ‘well’ he does. Kidding! Speaking of samples, we’ll need a little more from Meyers before I believe his ceiling is any higher than seen previously. In other words, the old man comes in, gets an out (or doesn’t) and goes to the clubhouse for a beer. (I’m not sure about the beer, but it’s not a bad idea.)

And I agree re Henn. But he’s looked pretty good so far, and I can dream can’t I?

  50. Jeff NJ

LOL, you see Beckett kicking stuff when he’s happy? I’d hat to see him at the birth of his kids, kicking doctors, nurses, machines. Typical Red Sox, beating the Yankees is the must important thing in the world. Enjoy it while you can Boston, because it won’t last long.

  51. harley

Who pitches after Proctor? How does his arm stay on? And does this mean Coulter Bean will finally get a look?

  52. Jeff NJ

Dave, thanks for asking, I just have a special feeling about Chase. Not a man-crush or anything, but I just have a good feeling. As for next Friday, it’s Wright, unless he really bombs tomorrow, but Friday’s game is open. Nice thing is after that both Wright and Karstens would be lined up for the next spot whoever does better in the next week gets the start the week after. Mark my words, Wright is going to be a star.

  53. Dave

Lets see what wright does tomorrow before we consider him a mainstay. He has thrown two games in double A and was in A ball for five yrs. Excuse me if Im skeptical. His stuff was not brilliant against the indians. The ridiculous lead combined with the very free swinging opponents Im sure alleviated a ton of the pressure. No way would the yanks already slate him for next friday. Wang will be back and Moose is back the following week.

  54. Anthony

Is there anything more annoying than Papelbon’s stupid game face? If so, I haven’t found it.

  55. Jeff NJ

Wright pitched well, his first start in the majors. As far as Cleveland those who say they are free swinging are just listening to talking heads, they have one of the best OBP in the league, they take plenty of walks and have an outstanding offense. Just wait before you right him off. By the way, who do you want to start Friday, Hughes?

  56. Dave

I dont know – but if wright gets bombed tomorrow I would not want to send him back out there next week. we have wang, Pettitt, karstens and rasner healthy so I guess we would need a fifth with no off days. I wouldnt mind giving clippard a look – i think he is ready to take a big league start. Another possible option is ohlendorf.

  57. Jeff NJ

Rasner is in the minors, it would go Igawa Monday, Wang Tuesday, Pettitte Wed, Karstens Thurs.

  58. Jeff NJ

By the way, Clippard hasn’t started since the 11th (probably today) they actually skipped him in the rotation last week, not sure why, maybe he is plan B.

  59. vin

“As far as Cleveland those who say they are free swinging are just listening to talking heads, they have one of the best OBP in the league, they take plenty of walks and have an outstanding offense.”

That may be true, but I watched the Indians swing at pitches that I guarantee 3/4 of the Sox lineup will not go after. Hey, no one wants to see him succeed more than me, but i think tomorrow will be a very tough challenge.

  60. Dave

damn forgot about Igawa. They could call rasner back up if need be. Otherwise why not clippard or ohlendorf or even steven jackson.

  61. Jeff NJ

Uh, seems a little quick to give up on a guy. He found something last year and went 12-3 to win Florida League pitcher of the year. Give him a chance before we go to the next choice. I know patience is not a Yankee fan virtue.

  62. y-pac

finally wang is going to give us a hand cause this lack of pitching can cost an elimination of the playoff, without pitching there is nothing.

  63. A-Rod for Prez

If Bruney isn’t best suited for it, who is? Wild Thing Farnsworth? iron man Mike Myers? Bruney is one of our most consistent bullpen arms so far. He’s one of the few that doesn’t make me cringe these days. I don’t think finding out he is pretty solid is a bad thing. We could use something that is solid about now.
