Boom, boom, boom, boom

Well, that was historical.

Chase Wright joined Paul Foytack as the only pitcher in baseball history to allow four consecutive home runs. Foytack was pitching for the L.A. Angels against the Indians on July 31, 1963.

One of the home runs was by Tito Francona, the father of Terry Francona.

So much for me having a good vibe from Wright. What a disaster. I thought Lowell’s home run was going to knock down the Citgo sign.

I couldn’t help but laughing at the fourth one. Poor Chase, that was just ugly.

  2. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 9:46 pm

Historical/painful.. same diff I guess, lol.

  3. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 9:46 pm

How sweet it would be to win after those four Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom.

I still beleive we will win.

  4. Reflaxion April 22nd, 2007 at 9:47 pm

My only concern is that the bullpen needs to get the gears working tonight.

Chase Wright will be okay. He really wasn’t ready for this, and the win against Cleveland wasn’t strong enough to warrant putting him into this game. It was a good outing for a guy of his level, but the Red Sox are another level entirely.

As for Matsuzaka, he really doesn’t look as tough out there as he’s been hyped to be.

  5. Ryan April 22nd, 2007 at 9:47 pm

How bout we put a tee in instead of a starter? Chances are it’d make it through 5 before most of the rotation.

  6. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 9:48 pm

I loved reading on Gameday… Ramirez grounds out softly to pitcher…

Why couldn’t he do that before making Wright a record holder?

  7. JCR April 22nd, 2007 at 9:48 pm

anyone knows what just happened? two Chase errors there up in the zone? why Nieves did not call for pitches down so the batters would not lift the ball?

  8. Skippy April 22nd, 2007 at 9:48 pm

Colter Bean to the rescue! Paging Matt DeSalvo!

(btw, the 1963 4 HR incident described is the AL record; they mentioned on the radio broadcast that the Dodgers hit 4 consecutive HRs just last summer, I believe against the Padres. Remember? Nomaaaah hit one.)

  9. Chris NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 9:49 pm

JCR, maybe because Nieves did call for the ball down, but Chase Wright hung them and they winded up being in the upper part of the zone???

  10. Ryan April 22nd, 2007 at 9:50 pm

    JEETAH!

  11. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 9:50 pm

    Matsusaka is garbage

The Gator should be fired by now, how in the hellll do you not go out to talk to Chase right after that first one. Stupid.

Red Sox fans make me want to punch kittens.

Jeter HOMERED. DICE K, Boston called… yeh THEY WANTED THEIR MONEY BACK.

  12. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 9:50 pm

    he “was” holding his own.
until he started putting that 83 mph-breaking pitch in the meat of the plate.

    agree with Josh.
feel conflicted mentioning this, but I chuckled when Varitek hit his.

hey – the kid was still in AA ball a week ago tonight.
and, to speak to his poise, he settled in, and STRUCK OUT Wily Mo Pena.

THAT’S why I say the kid should be commended.
so he didn’t last eight innings.
I don’t think that’s what ANYONE expected from him… at least reasonably. If he did, it would’ve exceeded expectations.

  13. Chris NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Matsuzaka owns the Yankees just as much as we don’t own Beckett.

  14. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 9:51 pm

    Here we go… Jetes homers.
We will take lead this inning.
A-Rod or Giambi will get the run.

  15. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 9:52 pm

    JETER Boom numero uno

  16. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 9:52 pm

    Underdog looks rattled.
has the door mat gotten into his head a little?

  17. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 9:53 pm

A-Rod needs to spend more time on the scouting reports and talk things over with Abreu after his at bats because he is looking downright stupid against Dice K.

  18. Chris NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 9:54 pm

Wily Mo is either a strikeout or homerun type of guy. It’s really not that big of a deal to strike him out, throw him breaking breaking balls and he’ll strikeout nearly everytime.

And he was in AA last week, but he’s in the majors now, not AA. He’s also been in the minors for 6 years, your point being? Now, I still like the kid, but boy, would a stint at AAA help him out or what.
    ———-
Wow. Matsuzaka seems to be baffling ARod. He isn’t getting good looks or swings at his pitches.

  19. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 9:54 pm

let me clarify, for when someone jumps down my throat.
none of those pitches were in the zone.
that’s the only reason why I’m saying that.

I think Underdog might be overthinking his at-bat.
I would also say the same thing about Abreu.
he seems a little out of sorts, too.

  20. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Chris, I think if you had the chance to interview Chase after tonight’s game… he’ll tell you he was trying to break his pitches to Ramirez, Drew, Lowell, and Varitek.

my point was… he was able to do against Pena.
after giving up FOUR STRAIGHT HOMERUNS.

the kid needs a little credit.
    he got some outs.

  21. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Why are Red Sox fans roaring about that Giambi pop up…? Ohhhhhh yeah thats right… cuz they have not got it into their skulls that Dice-K’s personal trainer makes more than Chase Wright, and they have the same runs allowed.

  22. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Remember A-Rod walk-off homer against Indians. It was after going 0-4 before that.
He should have another two at bats before the game is over.

  23. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 9:57 pm

    Rattled? lol

    You gotta be kidding…

  24. Kevin M. April 22nd, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Crazy as this may sound it was stupid to take him out. He missed on a few locations, but he was actually pitching pretty well. There is certainly a great amount of luck involved in hitting 4 home runs in a row.

And although the ever astute Torre took him out because he was worried about him being rattled. Except after giving up 4 long balls he struck out one of the most dangerous hitters in their lineup and didn’t seem rattled in the least bit. So now we’re going to burn our pen once again….somebody needs to take the panic button out of Torre’s office before one of our relievers gets his arm amputated.

  25. Mike April 22nd, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Anyone else catch Miller making excuses for Dice-K? “In fairness to Dice-K, Jeter’s homerun would not be a homerun in any other park. And the wind is blowing out to left.” Aw, now I feel bad. Someone tell Derek to give the homerun back. It’s only fair. The fact is that we ARE playing in Fenway Park so it doesn’t matter what would happen in any other park. Miller needs to realize the Sox don’t cut his paychecks anymore, at least directly.

  26. Frank April 22nd, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Can we start an inning without walking the first guy at the plate

  27. Peter Abraham April 22nd, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Luck, Kevin? All four of those pitches were crushed.

  28. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:00 pm

    just once… on a consistent basis…
… I just don’t want our pitcher to walk the initial batter.

hmmmm… wonder what Clemens is thinking right now.

  29. Brian C April 22nd, 2007 at 10:01 pm

In all fairness to chase wright, he had jd drew struck out if the ump calls balls and strikes unbaisedly. And Dice-K gets all the calls. If my grandma got as many balls called strikes as Dice-K she could be a good pitcher too.

  30. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:01 pm

Folks, why pick on every word Miller and Morgan say?
They said some good things about the Yanks as well.
Do not expect them to just praise Yankees and nothing else.
They are just doing their job.

  31. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 10:01 pm

That wasn’t luck Kevin, those balls may as well have been sitting on a tee and had rocket propulsion inside of them for how hard they were hit.

  32. Kevin M. April 22nd, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Yes, bad luck for Wright. If you threw the ball up their underhanded most ballclubs would not be able to hit 4 home runs in a row. There’s a reason why almost no team has ever hit 4 hr in a row….do you really think that those were 4 of the worst pitches ever thrown in a row? It was bad luck for Wright that one of them didn’t get popped up for the 3rd out of the inning.

  33. pat m April 22nd, 2007 at 10:09 pm

I’d just like Jon Miller to shut up now about the 4 in a row. he hasn’t let more than a few minutes pass without talking about it.
Morgan made a comment about a lefty being slower to the plate than a righty (and hence easier to steal off of). Anybody know why?

  34. 30 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:11 pm

Foytack was the last American League pitcher to give up four. The Dodgers hit four in a row last year. Now, J.D. Drew was on the last two teams to do it.

  35. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:11 pm

    Pat M,

No idea, I thought leftys were harder to steal from because they are facing the runner on first and can move quicker and keep an eye on him easier.

  36. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:13 pm

Something must be out of whack…

Four straight homers, two Dud M hits.

  37. realisticyankeefan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:13 pm

Well, I hate to say “I told you so” about Wright, but I told you so.

  38. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:14 pm

Maybe our hitters are waking up a little as well tonight

  39. DC Yank April 22nd, 2007 at 10:16 pm

I am glad to see that I was not that only way who reacted that way to the four home runs. One, I kind of laughed about it (those home runs reminded me of the movie Major League….that ball wouldn’t have been out of a lot of parks….name one….Yellowstone) and two, it was a little easier to handle in April.

I have no idea if Wright will never have another shot with the Yanks, but he seems to have a lot of movement and seems to carry himself well. I swear I saw him crack a smile in the middle of that stretch. Sure you like a p*ssed off Roger Clemens, but you also want a kid who won’t put his head down and mope. Some guys try to be like Clemens and put on a show….this kid seemed to appreciate he has had a tight strike zone, is still struggling with his control, and needs some more time to work on it. I am in his corner….

  40. ChrisV82 April 23rd, 2007 at 2:15 am

That’s the difference between a rookie and a veteran. When Randy Johnson gave up four home runs in one inning to the White Sox in 2005, he at least broke up the streak by putting some guys on base in between.

  41. Skippy April 23rd, 2007 at 10:51 am

Just to apologize–the 4 HRs in the Dodger game last September came off two different pitchers, so Pete’s initial comment was right (also, Nomar didn’t hit one of those four that tied the game, but I think he hit one in extra innings to win). I always admit it when I’m wrong.
