Meanwhile, we have a game

The statistics show that opponents hit Daisule Matsuzaka much better as the game goes longer, so it will be interesting to see how long the Red Sox go with him.

He’s having the worst outing of his four starts this season and he has already thrown 79 pitches.

His off-speed stuff is very nasty but his fastball is big-league average. The more video teams compile on him, the less effective he may be. How he adjusts to the adjustments made on him will determine a lot.

Colter looks like Randy Johnson after he ate a bat boy. Go get ‘em funky release point man!

  2. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:02 pm

    what?
    why is PROCTOR warming up?
    and… PETTITTE?

    … uh…
… should I even ask that question?

  3. Michael April 22nd, 2007 at 10:02 pm

are the yankees ever hit someone? they never retaliate. i’m not saying that dice-k intentionally meant to hit ARod and Jeter, but still knock someone down. If they can pitch inside like that why can’t we?

  4. Rey22 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Wow, our pitching situation is so sad right now we have Pettitte warming up in the bullpen…

  5. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:07 pm

    Agree with you Michael.
If they knocked down Manny, those four Booms would have never happened.

  6. DL April 22nd, 2007 at 10:07 pm

we CAN pitch inside like that, but why would we? getting hit by a pitch is what led to our runs. we can’t risk letting a man on base for free.

  7. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Jeter even held up JD Drews sad a** after he stole second, I have always said it though, I want the Yankees to get dirty, retaliate, next time Schilling has a bloody ankle… bunt the whole game. I wish someone could just hit Manny right in the face man, cuz Michael, that A-Rod hit was as intentional as it gets. Dice K was smiling with Varitek and everything. If Pettitte even gets within 30 feet of the mound, someone has to fire Torre on the spot.

  8. Ryan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:08 pm

If Cashman was smart, he’d draft the guy from Creighton that has pitched in games with both arms. Lets see Torre try to blow that guy out.

  9. steve April 22nd, 2007 at 10:09 pm

thats why we need clemens back he’ll throw at anyone … colter is like a poor mans jeff nelson with that side arm slider

  10. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Why would he hit Arod intentionally with a man already on base? It only ended up coming back to bite him. He just got a little too inside.

Giving free bases to the yankees just to make a point? I can’t see them doing that.

  11. Frank April 22nd, 2007 at 10:10 pm

    DL,
Why not hit them…we already give them a free base by walking them…

  12. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Torre should have been fired end of last season.
I hope he gets fired soon.
They can save some money for next season.
    He makes what 7 mil.
Mattingly or Joe Giradi will get paid 1 mil tops.

  13. sunny615 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:10 pm

I haven’t been on these blogs during the series… but I have to say, that given what we’ve seen in the series, the fact that we’re even competing in any of the games says a lot despite the fact that we lost the first two (and should’ve won the first one). Considering we put out Colter Bean, Chase Wright, Jeff Karstens and was in the games for most of the series say a lot about the yanks when Wang, Moose, and even Pavano come back. Or Clemens or Hughes comes into play. I’m looking forwad to the rest of the season.

  14. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:10 pm

could use another Minky double/triple here.

  15. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 10:11 pm

What is so bad about Pettitte throwing an inning on his throw day?

  16. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:12 pm

… or a single will do.
    nice job running, Robby.

  17. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Sunny I agree, got plenty of positives coming out of the series, and the one negative in Rivera will correct itself, no doubt about it.

  18. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 10:12 pm

    It reeeeeeks of desperation, Angel.

  19. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Sammy, Single was as good because of Cano’s good baserunning.

  20. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 10:14 pm

there’s the lead, now lets hold it bullpen!

  21. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:14 pm

    c’mon, Wil.
hit one hard, and not RIGHT AT someone.

  22. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 10:15 pm

    Pettitte!! Sweet!!

  23. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:15 pm

… or, straight up in the air at someone.
I guess that’s not necessarily hit hard.

    so, good job, Wil.

  24. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:15 pm

Gonzo you have a great point, how the hell did Torre not bunt like 4 times with schilling on one foot?

  25. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:15 pm

I do not feel good about Pettitte coming in.
It is not fair to him.

  26. Rey22 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:16 pm

Gonzo I could not have said it better.

  27. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 10:17 pm

Pettitte is being a team player. I have no problem with that. I doubt he’d be coming in if we hadn’t been celebrating Rookiefest and Injuryfest the last two weeks. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. One inning in relief for a starter here and there isn’t going to kill him. Esp not considering he didnt pitch as much in spring training as he would have had his back not played up on him.

  28. Reflaxion April 22nd, 2007 at 10:18 pm

“Why is Pettitte coming in?” everyone asks.

Because Chase Wright lasted three innings, and the pen has been worked hard and can save a bit of wear and tear this way.

It’s not a disaster by any means.

  29. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:18 pm

I just hope Clemens is inspired by his buddy comming to pitch twice on his throw day, gets off his lazy boy and signs with the Yanks.

  30. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:19 pm

you know why he’s doing this?
so he can get on the phone afterward and say, “you know what… if you were here, I wouldn’t HAVE to come in. You and your 348 wins.”

  31. DL April 22nd, 2007 at 10:20 pm

i think i remember from the first time that he appeared in relief that pettitte was the one who approached torre (not the other way around) and said that he wanted to help out the team and be a reliever for the game. says a lot about him as a team player.

  32. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:20 pm

After years of having a bad pen, we get a pretty good one. A good that Torre would have a tough time breaking down, and then three starters get injured and the pen gets abused.

    Man that sucks

  33. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:21 pm

I am happy Pettitte came through.
Now, if only Joe does not mis manage from now onwards…

  34. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:22 pm

    Saint Petite.

Please inspire a Rocket boost with your shenanigans

  35. Frank April 22nd, 2007 at 10:22 pm

If I was Pavano and watching this, I think I would crawl in a hole

  36. steve April 22nd, 2007 at 10:23 pm

good to see pettitte volunteer to pitch again … great guy to have on the team, saying that tho, if pettitte never bolted to houston we never would have gotten hughes (the yanks drafted hughes with the pick houston had to cough up to the yanks) so its good to see pettitte back and hopefully hughes coming up soon

  37. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Should Mussina crawl in a hole too.

  38. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Exactly. Its not a disaster. He only threw 9 pitches. Thats one inning less that someone else has to throw.

  39. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 10:24 pm

The only thing inspiring Clemens these days are dead presidents.

  40. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:24 pm

… and he gets the win should this lead stand.

  41. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:25 pm

    And lot of green.

  42. harley April 22nd, 2007 at 10:26 pm

For all the grief I give Joe for his inability to think outside the box, letting Pettitte relieve on his throw day is a great piece of managing. And I guarantee you it was Andy’s idea.

  43. Rusty April 22nd, 2007 at 10:26 pm

I don’t normally criticize Torre. But in the 6th, they had first and third, NO OUTS, a semi-slumping Melky at bat with Nieves behind him.

You run the goddamn squeeze play…

Worst case scenario if he lays it down, Cano is held, you move Minky over to 2nd, and you have 2 men in scoring position with only one out and let Nieves either try the squeeze again or get Damon to the plate.

Best case scenario, Cano scores, and you have Minky and Melky on 1st and 2nd, still no outs, and the top of the order coming up.

Joe. Please. You gotta make moves …

  44. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:27 pm

    c’mon, Bobby.
    let’s put one in play.
and let Underdog get another crack.

  45. Rusty April 22nd, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Instead we get a GIDP RBI. Could have been a much bigger inning using much smaller ball.

Joe. Please. You gotta make moves …

  46. randy l April 22nd, 2007 at 10:28 pm

i’m glad chase wright is off the hook for the loss. it’s bad enough he’s going to be remembered for about 30 years for the four homers in a row. if the yankees win this game, he’ll be able to laugh about it.

  47. Frank April 22nd, 2007 at 10:28 pm

That is true he does get the win…and the bullpen owes him a win anyway

  48. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:28 pm

You really expect that from Clueless Joe.

  49. Rusty April 22nd, 2007 at 10:29 pm

    sorry double post :p

  50. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:29 pm

Randy I don’t think he’ll ever laugh about it

  51. Butch April 22nd, 2007 at 10:31 pm

I know Melky is improving a bit after a slowish start but how much longer can we give him so many at bats hitting .200 or less? Why not get Thompson into the mix more or even call up Shelley Duncan who’s been hitting well in AAA.

Same for Menky, when do you legitimately pull the plug on him? Great glove but hitting .160 is really horrendous.

  52. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 10:32 pm

Matsuzaka is nasty. So many pitches he throws for strikes. If we win this it will be well earned.

  53. Rudy April 22nd, 2007 at 10:32 pm

what do you guys think proctor then farns and if we got the lead mariano

  54. Kristin April 22nd, 2007 at 10:32 pm

Would it surprise anyone if the announcers were both wearing Dice-K tshirts right now along with one of those huge cardboard cut-outs? Seriously the only other player I’ve seen them drool over this much is Ortiz.

  55. Frank April 22nd, 2007 at 10:32 pm

Dice-K has made both Abreu and A-Rod look silly tonight

  56. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:33 pm

Proctor against Manny…I hope he doesn’t give him meatballs like he did last year. I hate this match up…

  57. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Only two innings left. So, Proctor and then Mariano.
However, Proctor against Manny is not a good match up.

  58. Reflaxion April 22nd, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Bean is in line for the win, not Pettitte.

  59. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 10:34 pm

Proctor then Farns and then throw my T.V. out of my window maybe.

  60. Jamie April 22nd, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Proctor is going to serve one up to Manny

    Tie Game

  61. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:35 pm

My mistake. There are three innings. So, Proctor, Frans and Mariano will be the order.

  62. Jamie April 22nd, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Here it comes… and there it goes! A home run!

Why do I possess this negative energy?

  63. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 10:36 pm

Melky will come around, he’ll get some rest starting tomorrow. Minky is so good, as long as he gets near .200 I’m ok with him, worse case start Phelps then bring in Doug, worse worse case trade Ohlendorf for Textiera

  64. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:36 pm

“I know Melky is improving a bit after a slowish start but how much longer can we give him so many at bats hitting .200 or less? Why not get Thompson into the mix more or even call up Shelley Duncan who’s been hitting well in AAA.”

Melky will be on the bench starting tomorrow when Matsui comes back. I cant wait to see him playing again. Melky’s start has been slow but he looks like he has no concidence and over matched at times.

  65. Reflaxion April 22nd, 2007 at 10:36 pm

In defense of our offense, Matsuzaka’s strike zone seems to span from the Goodyear blimp to wherever Ted Williams’s remains will eventually be buried.

  66. Rey22 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:37 pm

I don’t want to see Farns in the 8th in such a close ballgame vs. the Red Sox

  67. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 10:38 pm

I want to choke Nancy Drew with a baseball glove man.

  68. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Vizcaino warming up in the bullpen…PLEASE not him again. Good job Proctor…This is absolutely ridiculous…Can someone besides Pettitte get a ####### out????!!!!

  69. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:39 pm

    Folks, Torre strikes again…..

  70. realisticyankeefan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Why is there no accountability on the Yankees anymore?

Today, Milwaukee sent down a relief pitcher (Aquino) who had blown 2 games in a row. Yet, Vizcaino can blow 2 games in a row, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Torre brought him back to pitch in a crucial spot. It’s strange when there is more accountability and consequences for poor play on the Milwaukee Brewers than the New York Yankees.

Where are the consequences for the inept play of Wil Nieves? Any journeyman backup catcher would be better, but I’m sure Torre will just keep him around for no earthly reason.

    4 in a row.

    Sweep.

  71. Rusty April 22nd, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Ya know, i don’t expect it from Joe – with our regular lineup.

But we’ve got this slumping replacement level bottom of the order – even though they’re all great players and nice kids, if he expects Melky or Nieves to create the same offense hes getting out of the regulars, hes just crazy. Also, we’re trying to avoid a sweep at Boston against Douche-K … time to start entertaining some unorthodox tactics dude (so unfortunate that things like double steals and the suicide squeeze are unorthodox for this team).

So yeah, i know that the yanks don’t play small ball, i get it. i like it even. I’d never have A-Rod or Giambi run a squeeze play to get a run, but slumping Melky in a tight game at Fenway? Absolutely.

I’ll miss Joe when hes gone next year, i sure hope Mattingly brings a new playbook instead of green tea …

  72. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:39 pm

.200 is ok? Come on he isn’t a pitcher. .260 might be ok, not .200

  73. Anthony April 22nd, 2007 at 10:39 pm

What is wrong with Torre? Why is Proctor pitching again?

  74. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 10:40 pm

    Bye Torre

  75. Charlie April 22nd, 2007 at 10:40 pm

    Miller’s hollering is intolerable.

  76. Butch April 22nd, 2007 at 10:40 pm

    Oh boy

  77. murphydog April 22nd, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Wow. I think maybe Joe did kill Proctor last year. Get a body bag. That boy’s done.

  78. paul April 22nd, 2007 at 10:41 pm

    welp now what

  79. Chris NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Does this team not now that the object to the game is to NOT give the lead back up like they have several times in EVERY game this series?

I just don’t know. The starting rotation stinks, as does the bullpen this series.

But that’s to be expected as more then half of our rotation is on the DL. So really, there are no worries, it’s just, winning at least one game would have been nice, and the 1st game should have been our all the way.

  80. Ryan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:41 pm

    This is laughable.

  81. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:41 pm

    Joe screws it again.
Why he did not get Henn against Drew?
Obvioulsy Proctor is tired of pitching too much.

Get Joe out of here please…..
Until that time, Yanks havd no hope.

  82. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 pm

This over used joke of a bullpen is making all of there garbage hitters look like Babe Ruth. As Clueless Joe brings in Vizcaino for the 100,000,897,99,999 time this early early season.

  83. randy l April 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 pm

why would you ever throw a low inside pitch to lowell ? all he does is pull the ball.

  84. YankeeJosh April 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 pm

    MurphyDog,

He didn’t kill him last year. It’s the past two games. There was no need to use Scott in a game we were losing last night. The pen is dead right now.

  85. Lefty April 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 pm

nice work by Torre….he is a HORRIBLE manager when it comes to pen.

  86. Russell April 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 pm

gotta agree with BBFan… Pete says we will miss Torre when he is gone… nope.

  87. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Man Torre not knowing how to manage a pen and the starters geting injured so we have to use the pen more… awful combination.

This sucks, how many arms can a man burn in his managing career?

Maybe Zimmer really was like the voice in his ear helping with his decisions, making him think twice.

  88. paul April 22nd, 2007 at 10:45 pm

what do we really expect, we have no starters going longer than 4 or 5 innings a start. What else can he really do. Our starting pitching is terrible.

  89. murphydog April 22nd, 2007 at 10:45 pm

The good news: we beat the Bosox starters, all three of their incredible starters. Including Dice-K the Wonderdog. Without Matsui or Po and with Minky, Melky and Nieves. The bad news: Boston killed our bullpen, dead dead dead.

    Yuck.

  90. Lefty April 22nd, 2007 at 10:47 pm

Proctor is going to join Villone and Sturtze in those middle of the night cold sweats wake up screaming nightmares they have of Torre

I would love to see a playback of the Red Sox HRs vs. Jeters HR call from Miller…the one good artery not filled with butter might give out…he needs to take it easy…wonder if Morgan carries the defibrillitor when they travel

  91. Rusty April 22nd, 2007 at 10:47 pm

How involved do you guys think Mattingly is in with managing this game? I hope hes got nothing to do with this garbage … i weep for the future otherwise.

  92. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:48 pm

If you really look at it, since Zimmer left Joe is really Clueless. Joe got all that credit for those four championships, but one has to wonder if we would have won them without Zimmer on the side of Joe.

  93. Lefty April 22nd, 2007 at 10:48 pm

good thing MLB does not let you bring pitchers back into a game or Proctor would be warming up again for the 8th…

  94. Brian C April 22nd, 2007 at 10:49 pm

Wow. Another potential loss to put on Torre. He would rather use Proctor 3 straight games and 4 out of 5 days than Farnsworth, who has pitcher twice in a week? Or Vizcaino for 3 out of 4 days versus Bruney has only pitched twice in the last 4 days and has only allowed 1 run all year? I am not a big Frans fan myself, but come on. Again, whats the poitn of having the guy on the roster if you’re not going to use him. If you don’t trust him late, put him in after Colter Bean. At least his arm is fresh. This is a joke.

  95. Lefty April 22nd, 2007 at 10:50 pm

    BBFan….excellent point.

  96. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 10:50 pm

Rusty that’s a good point. I bet Cash and Steinbrenner are taking notes of what Mattingly’s doing this year and if he influences Torre.

If Torre doesn’t come back next year, it’s because they don’t like his managing and if Mattingly seems to be on the same pace as him, maybe it will be Girardi next year.

Though I really hope Mattingly can give good advice to Torre and take the lead next year. He was my favorite player.

  97. murphydog April 22nd, 2007 at 10:51 pm

    Josh:

Hope you’re right. I really do. I hope this is just small sample stuff.

But Scott really did throw an awful lot of innings last year, many more than the year before. This is the rebound year, so nobody really knows whether it will be an issue or not.

  98. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 10:51 pm

Yo Peter, no more fanboy stuff. Ask that Bored old man why he is blitzkrieging our relief on a daily basis already.

  99. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 10:51 pm

What else you expect from Clue less Joe?
Hope Saint Stein wakes up tomorrow and decides enough of this Clueless Joke. Believe me, Cash will not say a word.

  100. Cumberberg April 22nd, 2007 at 10:52 pm

I’m getting so bored listening to ESPN and FOX talk about how wonderful the Red Sox rotation is. Our depleted roster got to them in each game. We’re missing our ace and Mussina (can’t make me say that I’m missing Pavano) so we’re marching minor leaguers into Fenway. Yeah, we may get swept right here, but it’s April and its a marathon not a sprint. I’m concerned about the bullpen and Torre’s management of it, but it’s under stress because our starters are out and Wong is back next week. Rivera will be okay. I didn’t want us to lose any of these games, but I’d be feeling a helluva lot worse about it if we’d gotten clobbered AND shut out.

  101. Brian C April 22nd, 2007 at 10:53 pm

“After years of having a bad pen, we get a pretty good one.”

Until Torre burns out their arms. Pettitte comes in tonight, yet Torre had a quick hook Friday night. Makes no sense.

  102. Yanksmitch April 22nd, 2007 at 10:53 pm

Everyone calling for Joe’s neck needs to calm down. What did you expect with Kartsens and Wright starting??? Though we may be swept in Boston, we were close in every game despite all the injuries. Let’s get Wang, Mussina, Matsui, and Posada back next weekend and see what happens.

The bullpen is exhausted, but it’s mainly the fault of injuries and poor starting pitching, not Joe Torre. I’m not saying I’m comfortalbe with the relief performances, and some changes need to be made– but relief pitching is almost every teams soft underbelly (if the pitchers were better, they’d be starting!)

Call me an optimist, but I like the fact we knocked around Schilling, Beckett, and Dice-K. Their rotation may be better, but they certainly haven’t shut down our offense. Once we get our arms back, this will be a game again.

  103. Will April 22nd, 2007 at 10:54 pm

The fact of the matter is Joe Torre has become a serious liability. The media and many fans continue to defend him because he’s Grandpa Joe. This weekend has clearly exposed Torre’s inability to manage a bullpen and strategize during the game. Friday’s loss was a debacle on his part and now bringing in Proctor again further confirms the extent to which he has hurt the team.

I appreciate that Torre was at the helm in the dynasty years, but it is time for him go. It’ll never happen, but it should.

  104. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 10:55 pm

I know that Mo is the great Mo..BUT it an ABSOLUTE joke that Clueless only cares about his arm. I mean give me a break there were games last week that Proctor was pitching in games 7-0, and then 9-2. I know the starting rotation has been hurt and that is not his fault but Bruney, Bean and Myers should of been pitching in those blow out games. Clueless pitches Proctor in every single games it is crazy! How come there are never games were Proctor or Bruney aren’t available??!! He may say they are available but he ALWAYS winds up using them. Fragile Farnworthless gets his days off. Rivera pitches once a week that is why he has blown 2 games and has zero location. Torre does not understand that these guys pitch too much and Rivera never pitches. He should try showing someone else respect besides Mo. He is a joke of a manager.

  105. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Thanks Yanksmitch, I completely agree. The future is bright even though the present is problematic. But hey I’m not giving up on this game yet.

  106. CGramazio April 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Okay, I’m gonna jump in on this Torre-Zimmer thing. I’m in complete agreement…have been for years. Just look at their past records. Zimmer was a winning manager for several teams…the Sox, the Cubs…Torre, not so much. Zimmer definitely was the wizard behind the curtain, at least in my opinion.

  107. Michael April 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Girardi should be managing this club

  108. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 10:57 pm

“Call me an optimist, but I like the fact we knocked around Schilling, Beckett, and Dice-K.”

Broham thats like the French being happy about bombing two German tanks while they lose the rest of France.

  109. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 10:58 pm

Its not a fact though, Will. Its your opinion, which is fine we’re all entitled to them. But you really should learn the difference and not act like it being your opinion makes it factual.

  110. CGramazio April 22nd, 2007 at 10:58 pm

Wow, the Yanks really need to do something here, the bottom of the that line-up in the ninth isn’t looking to promising.

  111. murphydog April 22nd, 2007 at 10:58 pm

I’ll give you all this much. Did Joe really have a choice last year other than to ride the pen hard with the starters he had? Probably not. Does he have much choice this year but to ride the pen hard? Not so far.

But does that change the fact that Villone and Sturtze certainly appear to have been blown out from overuse? No, it doesn’t. And was Proctor overused last year? Yes, he was.

  112. Yanksmitch April 22nd, 2007 at 10:59 pm

Another stading O for a sub par performance… I wish it were Yankee fans in that position.

  113. Sam April 22nd, 2007 at 10:59 pm

ESPN sucks. Is it just me or all these guys pulling for the Red Sox? Jon Miller sucks. I wish YES had this game otherwise I wouldn’t have to listen to this partisan B.S.

  114. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 11:00 pm

    now HERE’S the test.
can we get to their bullpen with our offense?
    c’mon, Giambi.

if we can get to this Kohjima… I may have misspelled his last name. If I did, my apologies.

  115. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 11:00 pm

    Good observation Will.

Yanksmitch, you are right it is only April and there is hope when all the starters come back.

Given how Joe managed game one and this game in this series, there is no hope for the Yankees. It has been a pattern for a long time. We need a good in game tactical manager which Joe is not.

It is better to get him our of here before it is too late and the season is lost.

  116. Will April 22nd, 2007 at 11:00 pm

I am not coming away from this series thinking “wow, the Red Sox are good”. I’m saying, “our manager is a liability and our GM is holding back real pitching prospects for the likes of Wright and Karstens”. The Red Sox are about to sweep the Yankees, but Torre and Cashman have been as responsible as Ortiz, Manny or Dice-K.

  117. YankeeJosh April 22nd, 2007 at 11:00 pm

    Murphydog,

Proctor has been good so far this year except for tonight. The Yankees have enough depth in the bullpen to not have to use all the relievers this much. I know the starters are beat up a bit now. But yesterday was a prime example of where Bean, Henn, and the B team could have been used. We were trailing the whole game and it didn’t make sense to further burn the pen. Yet another reason Pettitte should have had a chance to go 7 Friday.

Francona at least let’s his starters push it. Joe has been captain hook traditionally with guys like Wang even when they’ve had low pitch counts.

  118. Butch April 22nd, 2007 at 11:01 pm

Standing ovation for Matsuzaka? He gave up 5 runs and 8 hits in 7 innings, and we didnt have Matsui or Posada in the lineup. That really doesnt seem all that impressive to me.

  119. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 11:01 pm

Man Zimmer had been next to Joe, the Yanks would have bunted the hell out of Schilling, won the AL and the Series

  120. Mike April 22nd, 2007 at 11:02 pm

Dice-K gets a standing ovation for what translates to a 7,14 ERA. Way to go Boston. 102Mil for 7.14.

  121. Jb April 22nd, 2007 at 11:02 pm

I blame Damon and Myers If the Yankees lose tonight.I mean Yankees scores five runs against Matsuzaka, and The pitchers failed them again. They’re both Rats who giving out tips and secrets to their former teammates. Damon’s probably using his cellphone by texting messages to his former teammates about Certain pitchers from Yankees and giving them out.

I think this is the Redsox Master Plan all along to get back on their hatred towards The Yankees. They had to Let Damon and Myers hits a free agency and fool the Yankees going after these two guys. The Redsox Management so smart that They had to Pretend that They can’t afford to resign these two guys.

  122. Cumberberg April 22nd, 2007 at 11:02 pm

Jeez Gonzo, it’s freakin April baseball not WW2. If you listened to ESPN, you’d think the BoSox starting three were the Holy Trinity. And we can knock them around with a line up missing Posada and Matsui. Rematch in the Bronx next weekend should look a bit different I think.

  123. Yanksmitch April 22nd, 2007 at 11:03 pm

Losing the rest of France?? Come on Gonzo– it’s April.

Murphydog, I’m with you on the overuse thing. Definitely a problem that Joe repeats every year. However, it usually has merit– Sturtze and Proctor were solid before Joe ripped their arm off. I think Joe just needs to find his mule for the year.

  124. Anthony April 22nd, 2007 at 11:03 pm

I’ve had it with Torre. He’s cooked.

I don’t want Mattingly to be the next manager. How often do you see either a great player or the former face of the franchise come in and become a good manager? All I can think of are the failures of Yogi Berra, Alan Trammell, Ted Williams, etc. It’s typical Yankee sentimentality and preoccupation with history. Girardi has proven himself, let’s bring him in.

  125. Rusty April 22nd, 2007 at 11:04 pm

Viz got squeezed badly on that 3rd ball (strike) to Lugo. BS.

Erick – i hate to be THAT GUY who thinks they can manage a team from the comfort of my living room, but it astounds me how often Joe will pass over very fundamental, basic tactics and plays during a game. We all sound like a bunch of jerks sitting here criticizing him, but seriously, you take all the names out of the lineup and the make everything into a general baseball scenario, i feel like most people would make different choices – especially when it comes to baserunning, the bullpen and sac plays.

So i cant sit here and hope Donnie knows these things – he has to, anyone in the majors has to know these things, its fundamental baseball. To me, its the idea that the manager makes a conscious decision to simply not play that way, no matter what the situation is. To me, thats not an old salt skipper who knows how to win games, thats just an old man being really stubborn about how he wants to play the game.

I read Joel Shermans Birth of a Dynasty (great book btw), and he concentrates ALOT on Joe Torre. During those dynasty years, his best merit was the way he emotionally managed the personalities on the team, not strategy, its a decade later and i think the players seem to have grown up and no longer need a father figure, they need a friggen manager. I hope Donnie can be that guy.

  126. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 11:04 pm

FYI – before everyone botheres to respond to JB.. please know its a red sox troll who posts the same ramblings on a dozen other yankee sites. Just ignore it – please don’t feed it.

  127. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 11:04 pm

Josh, I agree with you, I don’t mind Joe trusting his relievers, but he definitely has too quick a hook for the starters. It started with Rasner on Thursday, blowing out the bullpen the day before the Boston series.

  128. murphydog April 22nd, 2007 at 11:04 pm

    Gonzo:

We slapped each of their big starters around. That’s like, well, slapping each of their big starters around. Period. Our losses (assuming we don’t pull off a miracle tonight) were directly attributable to substandard starting in the last two games and a godawful pen in all three.

Assuming we can get the rotation in shape and give the pen some R and R to get well again, the next time we see the Sox it will be a very different story.

Boston should be very concerned about what the rest of the league takes away from this series about their starting pitching. It’s not unbeatable.

  129. tonyb April 22nd, 2007 at 11:05 pm

I am also in complete agreement on the Zimmer ‘Man Behind The Curtain’ theory. Joe was the Steinbrenner insulator and public relations face for Zim’s brain.

I also think that our pitching is going to come around and this lineup is going to kill this year. We have faced 3 very good starting pitchers this weekend and rocked them.

…and this game ain’t over yet.

  130. randy l April 22nd, 2007 at 11:05 pm

that is a good sign that posada can pinch hit.

  131. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 11:05 pm

    Jb that’s just whack

  132. Anthony April 22nd, 2007 at 11:06 pm

    Jb, you’re an idiot

  133. DL April 22nd, 2007 at 11:07 pm

what was posada screaming after the second called strike? something like “that’s not right”? he was yelling it over and over again to the ump…

  134. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 11:07 pm

I mean I know it’s April, and that we did bang their starters up a little, but on Jim Rome is Burning, PTI, Around the Horn, and everywhere else, all I am gonna hear is the sweep this, the sweep that.

  135. Angel April 22nd, 2007 at 11:07 pm

I guess I was too late in posting that, lol.

    Just ignore it.

  136. sammy April 22nd, 2007 at 11:08 pm

    okay… go, Underdog.
for making whatever-his-name is work that walk.

  137. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 11:08 pm

A Rod just distracted Okajima into ball four. Good job A Rod Almighty

  138. CGramazio April 22nd, 2007 at 11:08 pm

You know I wonder how much Donnie really knows about strategy. He only played in the American League and it seems National League type guys have a better understanding…

  139. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 11:09 pm

Can Melky even get the ball out of the infield?

  140. tonyb April 22nd, 2007 at 11:09 pm

    Melky,

    Please make my weekend.

    Thanks,
    TonyB

  141. randy l April 22nd, 2007 at 11:09 pm

    murphydog-
i’m with you that the red sox rotation is very hittable. and how do you say “overpaid” in japanese?
    this game is winnable.

  142. Anthony April 22nd, 2007 at 11:10 pm

Jorge is the man. He and Pettitte both know what it means to earn their salaries. How is it that Andy can be such good friends with a guy like Pavano?

  143. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 11:11 pm

    Girardi is the Man.

  144. Anthony April 22nd, 2007 at 11:11 pm

    Can’t Phelps pinch hit here?

  145. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 11:11 pm

Anthony let’em be friends, maybe something will rub off on him, couldn’t hurt

  146. Butch April 22nd, 2007 at 11:11 pm

    Melky :S

Come on man, break out of your slump.

  147. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 11:12 pm

    Way to contribute Cairo!

  148. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 11:13 pm

    Nieves is killing me

  149. CGramazio April 22nd, 2007 at 11:13 pm

I think Bobby Valentine’s contract is up in Japan after this year…he’s my man.

  150. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 11:13 pm

    Phelps to be catching!

  151. murphydog April 22nd, 2007 at 11:14 pm

    Gonzo:

Man up, Dude! We banged their starters around more than a little. What were their ERAs coming into this series? (Cheer Dice-K for giving up 6 earned, Becket for four earned and Schill, he gave up like twenty, didn’t he?) Their starters CHOKED.

And what a phat lineup we put together for this series. They beat Karstens and maybe they will beat the pitching committee we sent out there tonight. Worth bragging about, Sox.

  152. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 11:14 pm

Is Torre nuts??!! Phelps is going to catch?? He hasnt been behind the plate in 6 years, and also cant hit right handed pitching…Please make me eat my words.

  153. Rusty April 22nd, 2007 at 11:14 pm

    nice slide Cairo!

I dont think its a matter of Mattingly knowing strategy or not – maybe he didn’t play that way often in the AL – but as a ballplayer, he has to KNOW these plays, and again, im not saying i want the yanks to play smallball, but in extrenuating circumstances, you gotta do what you gotta do to get it done, not just stubbornly stick to ‘what you know’ and cross your fingers.

  154. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 11:14 pm

I said before the season they should just make Phelps the backup c and 1b, who needs Nieves?

  155. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 11:14 pm

Thank you Phelps, please do somethin, don’t pull a Dud M

  156. murphydog April 22nd, 2007 at 11:15 pm

    Randy 1:

Pedroia nice catch. I am sick.

  157. Butch April 22nd, 2007 at 11:15 pm

    damn, nearly did it

  158. Gonzo April 22nd, 2007 at 11:15 pm

The Red Sox are ridiculous for celebrating this vociferously.

  159. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 11:16 pm

Looks like all the stars are aligning for A-Rod to be the hero again. He will be the fouth in the ninth inning to bat…

  160. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 11:17 pm

As ESPNesn would say the Yankees will have to hit Hall of Famer Papelballs. It would be nice if they can show that they can touch him.

  161. CGramazio April 22nd, 2007 at 11:18 pm

Yeah, at least the Yanks get the top of the order in the ninth. Should be fun.

  162. Anthony April 22nd, 2007 at 11:18 pm

The gods are against us. Oh well, now we take our chances against Papelbon and meanwhile have to watch Phelps catch pitchers he’s never caught before for two innings (if we’re lucky).

  163. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 11:19 pm

I hope Phelps doesnt know the sign for meatball.

  164. Michael in Chicago April 22nd, 2007 at 11:19 pm

Well, with a decimated pitching staff, we have certainly given them a game three nights in a row. Going the distance (not our starters necessarily, but everyone else including Pettite) is something to take away as a positive from this weekend.

  165. randy l April 22nd, 2007 at 11:20 pm

phelps in to catch? now this is going to be interesting. ok , he can catch the ball. not bad.
hopefully we won’t see a pop up behind the plate or a throw to second.

  166. CGramazio April 22nd, 2007 at 11:20 pm

I like Phelps catching, it’s just kind of cool. Do anything for the team.

  167. Jb April 22nd, 2007 at 11:21 pm

I’m Yankees Fan , You don’t know me. Angel = Paul TM Dandruff. He’s basically the same person. He’s Real Redsox Troll who post in Yankeesvs/Sox fan Blog website.

  168. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 11:21 pm

I bet the team cant wait to see Matsui and Wang’s faces tomorrow.

  169. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 11:24 pm

I would change it to inspite of decimated staff and crazy managerial moves by clueless Joe we have certianly given them a game three days in a row.

  170. Butch April 22nd, 2007 at 11:24 pm

Phelps doesnt look half bad. I wonder if he could be a legitimate back up. I’d prefer to have his bat in there over Nieves any time.

  171. Brian C April 22nd, 2007 at 11:24 pm

guess we don’t have to worry about Manny stealing a base on Phelps?

  172. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 11:26 pm

This game isn’t over yet. I feel like we’ll score on Papshmear

  173. murphydog April 22nd, 2007 at 11:27 pm

Did Joe Morgan actually just make a good point about the Sox pitchers not doing so well? Get the defibrillator!

  174. Anthony April 22nd, 2007 at 11:28 pm

They’ve got to get rid of Nieves. There has to be someone out there that can do a better job. Hell, get Girardi out there!

  175. Lefty April 22nd, 2007 at 11:29 pm

I agree with the Phelps to BUC, what is the issue with him picking up the glove once a week to give Jorge a break. Torre could use the roster spot to find another arm in the bullpen to ignore completely or if he likes the guy, burn his arm out

  176. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 11:30 pm

Does anyone know how Raul Chavez is doing in triple A?

  177. BBFan April 22nd, 2007 at 11:31 pm

Inspite of clueless Joe, we will win the game with A-Rod or Giambi having a big hit.

  178. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 11:31 pm

Murphy, Morgan was trying to compliment us saying how close we are with way inferior pitching, but Miller quickly added how the Red Sox keep coming back everyday. Either way, I would much rather listne to Michael Kay and any of the YES announcers over these clowns. And no I don’t want to listen to the radio, the timing with the TV doesn’t work and to be honest listening to John and Susan is for emergency non TV situations only.

  179. Butch April 22nd, 2007 at 11:31 pm

Just checked out Phelps’s fielding stats, not a lot to go on but what’s there is certainly acceptable:

    http://thebaseballcube.com/pla.....elps.shtml

  180. Anthony April 22nd, 2007 at 11:33 pm

“The crowd appropriately went nuts when he (Papelbon) came in”?? Miller is such a Boston shill. And he’s already apologizing for Pap just in case.

  181. Butch April 22nd, 2007 at 11:33 pm

Erick, last I saw Chavez was hitting under .150.

  182. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 11:34 pm

Miller just gave the excuse du jour if Papshmear blows it “He’s pitched 4 out of the last 5 days”

  183. tonyb April 22nd, 2007 at 11:34 pm

Come on top of the order!

  184. Jeff NJ April 22nd, 2007 at 11:35 pm

lol, I’m going to say I don’t know what that would look like, butt yeah I’ll agree.

  185. jw April 22nd, 2007 at 11:38 pm

if this goes on the pen’d be burnt long before we even hit the all-star break

  186. Erick April 22nd, 2007 at 11:38 pm

    Thanks Butch.

I guess that means Nieves is gonna stay for awhile until Cash can trade a semi-prospect pen arm for a backup or pull something out of his hat of tricks.

  187. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 11:39 pm

It would be nice if they actually made Papelballs throw strikes and not get yourself out. Abreu please get on to give Arod a shot.

  188. Butch April 22nd, 2007 at 11:43 pm

OK Joe Morgan, we get it, Pappelbon isnt afraid of anyone. Holy sh*t already. These 2 are unlistenable.

  189. Captain521 April 22nd, 2007 at 11:49 pm

Well there goes that. Abreu had a good at bat the other 3 swung at balls and got themselves out instead of waiting for strikes. They talk about Papelballs like he has been in the majors for 10 years, has 5 world series rings. Can we see him pitch in even one important game and maybe even the post season before the announcers talk about him and kiss his butt like he is the greatest of all time. I mean give me a break.

  190. Dizzy April 23rd, 2007 at 12:15 am

give me torres head on a plate or give me death

  191. matcohen April 23rd, 2007 at 10:52 am

How is Mats fastball ml average?

He was regularly hitting 95 and I saw a 97 at least once.
