Red Sox too much for Proctor

April
22

In 24 career appearances against Boston, Scott Proctor has allowed 22 earned runs in 25.1 innings and six home runs. Not sure why he was in there for a third straight game.

Meanwhile A-Rod has hit in 22 straight games going back to last season.

Matsuzaka was not particularly impressive. But he was certainly a lot better than Chase Wright and Proctor.

Hard to believe they would score 16 runs (so far) in games started by Schilling, Beckett and Matsuzaka and get swept. But it’s not over yet.

i can’t blame proctor – torre overuses him like crazy

  2. Rick

Can we find some good starters PLEASE.

  3. Russell

yea i dont blame proctor either, torre’s fault… anyone notice how A-Rod made the Japanese pitcher shaky and thats why Posada was easily walked? Another tool of A-Rods to add to his plate.

  4. Col

realisticyankeefan (why not put redsox fan?): Looks like Yankees have that chance of coming back.

  5. beavis

nieves and meintkevich are wastes of roster spots

  6. Russell

Ohhh crap, the worst baseball player in the world makes the best play in the world… DAMN YOU PEDROIA!

  7. steve

3 loses is still 3 loses … but hell like alot of people are saying, its not as bad as it seems … when the yanks are at full strength they are the best team in the AL east

  8. sammy

I think Torre can’t be blamed for a starter not being able to last. Just as much as I can’t blame Torre that we have starters on the DL.

The situation is what it is.
I think the bullpen is tired. I think the guys aren’t being used how they were planning on being used, and they’re a little dishelved.

    It is what it is.
We’ll get it on track. We’ll get our starters back. And we’ll recover.

I think any realistic Yankee fan would realize all of this.

  9. Gonzo

Phelps is one hell of a catcher. Doing admirably out there.

  10. Lefty

if Torre managed Papelbon he would be out of baseball and looking for work now with his one remaining arm that could be lifted above his head

  11. Dint

Sammy, no use. By now anybody who reads the comments section here knows exactly who the Red Sox trolls are. These are people (we think) that get off to trying to get a rise out of normal people and they spend all day with the opposing fan base rather than actually enjoy their own team. It is pathetic and they love attention, so best not to acknowledge anything they say because it sounds stupid for a reason.

  12. Stan

Torre can be blamed bringing proctor out there when you have a relatively rested bruney in the bullpen is unacceptable. I understand you need to lose with your best but proctor is clearly overworked and bruney has come up big in the past

  13. mike f

yeah, phelps did a really nice job for us ( note i said US ) out there…he would have a had an RBI for us too except for that freak catch by that little pedroia

  14. steve

seriously. phelps ain’t that bad out there, not sure how he is with balls in the dirt but realistically if nieves still stinks it up why not have phelps as the back up catcher and bring up another pitcher/outfielder

  15. Rudy

for not catching in 6 year he did pritty well good job phelps now lets push accross atleast one common

  16. Lefty

I wonder if Morgan and Miller have a rider in their contract where they get a certain type of toilet paper in the press box to wipe their mouths with…..I think Morgan is getting a hemoroid on his upper lip

  17. HaveFaith

You must stay patient! Even with the Yankees record & performance this year. If they don’t pull this game out tonight, only 1 of their 9 losses this year was by more than 2 runs (the give away game ot the Twins). Even in those losses they’ve had the chance to win in the 9th.

They’ve managed to keep close to .500 despite a historically bad starting roation situation that can only get better. If htey were average, they’d be leading the division on an upward trend of crushing everyone.

The concern is WHEN will it get better – and that starts with the return of Wang. Hughes is a few months away. The adversity can bring this team together…

  18. Rey22

Not even close to touching his stuff…

  19. Will

Pete: PLEASE ask Joe why he would bring in Proctor after pitching in 3 of the last 4 (AND WHY HE USED HIM IN THE CLEVELAND BLOWUT).

Overworking the bullpen is killing the team and cost them two wins in this series.

  20. Gonzo

Well Steve there was a wild ball that hit the dirt and short hopped into his glove and he dealt with it nicely.

  21. BBFan

Torre should have never brought Proctor in to this game. He is not only tired, he did not fare well against Manny et al., in the past.

  22. Angel

Whats killing the team is having starters injured and starters unable to go more than 5 innings, thus leading to overuse of the bullpen.

  23. Lefty

forget about it, this guy is going to K about $300m in talent this inning

  24. Gonzo

No one blame this on A-Rod if it gets to him and he strikes out, it would be unfair.

  25. Rudy

    common arod

  26. BBFan

    Here comes A-Rod.
    Let us cheer for him.

  27. Erick

    A ROD
    A ROD
    A ROD

    TRIPLE CROWN MAN

It’s your turn to shut up Fenway

  28. Lefty

    Gonzo…agreed.

  29. Lefty

    next weekend…

  30. Rey22

    Ugh..

  31. Erick

    Crap… off to bed.

We’ll get ‘em next weekend, that’s for sure.

  32. chaka from land of the lost

Yeah! Let the month long “what is wrong with the Yankees, Boston is the team to beat” celebrations begin on Sportscenter!

  33. BBFan

Let us hope Clueless Joe learns from his mistakes and does a better job from tomorrow. Good night.

  34. Gonzo

Well the Red Sox can do this again in another 17 years, until then nothing has changed, we still own them.

  35. mike f

well we did OK considering the odds against us…i think we’ll get payback next weekend

  36. A-Rod for Prez

I feel sorry for the Yankee lineup. The pitching really sucks and hasn’t stepped up and they can’t do it all themselves. Cashman better be on the phone with someone.

  37. Jake

You cannot blame ineffectiveness like Proctors tonight on “overuse”. Its 15 games into a season here. He could get an out. If hes tired he should say something.

Torre made the horrendous decision on Friday to bring Mo into a 3 run game in the 8th. SHow some trust in some other guys to get you 3 outs.

  38. Rudy

well we knew coming in to the series expectations were low and if it were’nt for the overused bullpen we had a good chance to win all three. Could be upset about losing but its still early and we’ll get em back wait till we get healthy

  39. A-Rod for Prez

Our pitching really screwed us. We should have swept this series.

  40. Doreen

Well, at least the Yankees did not shrink from a pitcher they had not faced before. Matsuzaka was beatable. It is ironic that in his last 2 starts, where he pitched well, the Sox did not win; in this one he was awful (though you couldn’t tell from the announcers) and he got the win.

  41. paul

Have to forget this series quick and take it to Tampa

  42. Gonzo

“Cashman better be on the phone with someone.”

Yeh a travel agent so he can get his embarrasing a** as far away from tampa/new york as humanly possible… maybe Franz Josef Land or Omsk Russia.

  43. paul

This tells it all our era this series 7.88 Redsox team ba .379. The plus is we faced their big 3 and only got outscored 21 to 17.

  44. Greg C.

I’m still wondering if Joe will ever learn how to use a bullpen correctly.

  45. Jb

Another Great Perfomance by Johnny Damon his former team… Nice Job By Cashman signing this guy. Can you please tell me, How many hits did Damon had in this series? Thanks… He’ had 0 homeruns and 0 rbi’s. You called yourself leadoffhitter and tablesetter? I mean I would rather have Chuck Knoublach back than Damon.

  46. randy l

this was not a lost weekend. the yankees know they can hit the red sox best pitchers. and being four back will snap some people into gear. phelps looked good catching. i wonder if he can throw. if he can, he becomes a lot more valuable. nieves actually hit the ball hard twice tonight. if he can hit a little and phelps can pinch hit for him and catch the end of some games, maybe they both can stay.
ok, wang will be back on tuesday. time to get the team back in sync. the bullpen needs a break. the yankees are ok. if they would have been blown out and the big three of the red sox had shut them down, then things would be looking bad. as it is, no big deal.

  47. tombo

Hard to blame Proctor’s outing on Torre guys. If he is going to pitch in the big leagues he needs to be able to get guys like Mike Lowell out. Granted nobody is going to get these guys out everytime but 3 runs before recording an out is not on Torre. He doesn’t have much to work with right now.

  48. mel

No Wang, No Moose, No Pavano (what’s new?), No Matsui, No Posada, No Problem.

They got swept and losses are losses, but it’s not as impressive as our 5 game sweep last year at Fenway. We lost by 4 total runs and had chances to tie late in all 3 games.

It took miracles for Boston to win each of these games. Blown 4-run lead (I mean when’s the last time that ever happened? lol), 4 solos in a row (btw sounds less and less impressive after hearing about it for the 100th time by the radio and tv guys), and a great catch by Pedroia to end the 8th.

Losses are losses, but I still feel good about this club. Go Yanks!

  49. YankeesLuv

Can’t blame the offense for any of the losses this past weekend, they did their job. Our pitching, Joe’s managing, now that’s another story. I only trust Andy Petitte right now. That first game is the game we should have had, when you get a good start from Andy, and 2 homers by Arod, can’t waste that, but oh well. Thank goodness this is April and not September.

  50. kasey

hard to say this coming off of a sweep, but boston doesn’t scare me. the yankees faced their three best pitchers and scored runs. on top of that, they were shorthanded offensively and in terms of pitching. here’s what does scare me.

oddly enough, despite anaconda’s claims, the bullpen’s overuse in the first three weeks of the season seems to have caught up to them. if you had stopped to read everyone’s posts, anaconda, you’d see that almost nobody was concerned about april use burning the bullpen out for august. we were concerned about april use burning the bullpen out for APRIL. and, guess, what? it happened. vizcaino’s meltdown came a day after throwing 33 pitches (and you can argue as condescendingly as you like, when a set-up guy throws 33 pitches one night, he shouldn’t be out there the next night), proctor’s meltdown came when he was used for a third straight game. andy pettitte has now appeared in relief TWICE this season. i don’t care how much you think you know about baseball, if you can’t see for yourself that the bullpen is being burned right now, you’re out of your mind.

mariano’s use has been so sporadic this season that he’s nowhere near a groove and, as such, a blown save liability. either that or he’s hurt. pick your poison.

the “kids,” as it turns out, aren’t that impressive. wright, karstens and rasner were supposed to be part of the yankees big pool of young pitching prospects. so far, i’m not impressed.

clemens can have all the run support in the world but, guess what? he’s pitching for WINS, not no decisions. if the bullpen keeps coughing up the lead, he’ll be in yankee stadium, alright. in a red sox uniform.

boston didn’t look great, but they swept the series. the yankees better get healthy, and they better get some pitching FAST.

  51. Gonzo

You know what I want? I want the Yankees and all of us fans to just disregard the Red Sox. Whenever they come to New York to play, we don’t boo, we don’t cheer more than we do on Royal games, and we wont make a big deal of anything.

You know why? Because that shows we are better than they are. That shows that the Red Sox are pipsqueaks to us, that we are 26 levels above them. Just ignore ‘em.

Let them act like they just won the lottery every time they beat us because they know we are that good, and lets act like these games don’t matter because in the end, win or lose we will always own them.

  52. DKA

delurking here for a sec for the first time…

did anyone else notice that Matsuzaka does this bizzare butt-wiggle before winding up every time? it’s like he was flirting with Dustin Pedroia the entire game.

Chase Wright still has a sack of steel. I still like the kid, but Torre needed to get him the hell out of there after they figured him out. Proctor will ALWAYS give up that run he’s not supposed to give up and, god, I love Andy Pettite.

it’s a marathon, not a sprint. we’ll get them next time.

  53. DKA

    another thing…

I graduated high school with Lowell….I have no idea how the guy looks about 15 years older than I do.

  54. A-Rod for Prez

Cashman really put together the rotation from hell. I fully expect Mussina to look like crap when he gets back as well.

  55. Andrew

I agree with you kasey, the depleted Yankees made each and every game close…and honestly should have won two of them.

That gives me hope, at least, for five days from now, when we give them two major league pitchers instead of one.

  56. kasey

    andrew,

yeah, if the yankees take 2 of 3 next weekend it’s like this never happened. but they need to win pretty much every game between now and then, too.

and they can’t really afford to drop next weekend’s series to the sox. they’ll need 2 of 3.

a 4-6 game deficit in april isn’t much of an issue, but if they’re 7-8 back by the time next weekend’s over, it’s going to be an uphill climb.

  57. ty

Can you Say Matsuzaka is overrated for $100 million dollar pitcher? The Yankees are missing guys in their lineup with Posada, Matsui were both out and yet Yankees score six runs off him.. Hideki Irabu Part 2??

  58. Chofo

The worst thing for me is that the pen lost 2 games, and it was suppose to be the strenght of the pitching staff this weekend. This wasn´t on the kids or even on the bench players, it was Mo and Proctor.

  59. JL

My only solace in this loss is that now ESPN can shut up with the great Dice K. I mean, 6 earned runs? That’s nothing to write home about. I think we could’ve won two out of three easily if the bullpen had been at least mediocre and not just plain awful.

  60. Gonzo

ESPN shut up with the great Dice K? Dream on man. Buster “I have no respect for the Yankees” Olney will give everyone the ‘ol “Dice K is going to bounce back. Remember, this was his first game in the rivalry. It will take time for him to adjust, but he threw alot of pitches for strikes and looked good against A-Rod” and then Baseball Tonight, SC, PTI, ATH will proceed to steamroll everyone with Dice K BS.

  61. mel

Did you hear Joe Morgan explaining how pitching inside is an “art” that Matsuzaka hasn’t learned and that’s why he beaned two of our best hitters?

  62. JJ

hard to say this coming off of a sweep, but boston doesn’t scare me. the yankees faced their three best pitchers and scored runs. on top of that, they were shorthanded offensively and in terms of pitching.

    My thoughts exactly.

  63. kasey

they’ve got to get the pitching thing figured out, though. the bullpen was supposed to be a strength for this team, and it wasn’t this weekend. overuse was certainly a contributing factor, but the mo thing is a big concern.

while boston doesn’t scare me, the yankees aren’t exactly what i’d call impressive.

  64. Gonzo

Yeh well Joe “I was wearing a J.D. Drew jersey all game” Morgan better explain how someone like that commands 100 + million.

“The Gator” better teach some of our guys to start hitting Boston Unis. I’m sick of them drilling everyone elses hitters while they get away with it (Beckett injuring Vlad).

  65. Taylor

How about you ask Joe that question, instead of your blog…

  66. GoYanks

I think that most Yankee fans were a bit worried that Dice K would dominate us tonight as –
    1. Yankees usually have trouble facing a pitcher for the first time.

    2. Dice K has been hyped as a shut down, dominating pitcher.

But our 60 percent line up handled him OK. We scored 6, but there were also some loud outs (Nieves twice, Phelps and Cano shot foul by inches) I think our line up (100% next time) will be ready.

Wonder what Dice K thinks of his own performance – tonight had to dent his confidence a bit. Also, his effectiveness definitely declines with runners on base.

If Green Tea were bedridden with the flu this week end, we may have won one, maybe two.

  67. rover

got whipped fair and square, if you want to call it that. one thing for sure DaisyDuke M and his boy friends really have something to worry about this week. half a yankee team came inches from taking all three. thats the impressive stats from the whole weekend.

  68. Babe Ruth

Russell, you have no idea what you are talking about. Pedroia is hardly the worst player in the world. He’s a rookie that is good enough that he has earned a spot on a major league ball team. His effort in saving that game for the Sox at that point proves he is capable of being up at the dance.

Guess what? It’s not Joe Torre’s fault either Yankee fans. It’s Cashman’s. Just what is Torre supposed to pull out of his freaking hat?? He used just about everyone he had including his probably #1 pitcher. lol

  69. chaka from land of the lost

seriously dude, is your life so devoid of any meaning that you feel compeled to gloat on a Yankees blog? Arsemouth’s arm will fall off soon enough. Gloat on that

So….do us all a favor and choke on a twinkie….or some other lard filled snack

I must us you as a maturity reference for now on. Lord knows anyone who uses “LOL” must be just shy of graduating from D.A.R.E. class next year and looking forward to going to the prom some day.

  70. Nate FrstHills

Seriously, is Clemens coming or not?

  71. Garry

You guys are comical, but on point.
Dice-K is HUMAN after all. Picture that. Yanks lost by only 4 runs with 1/2 a lineup and 1/3 their starting pitching. True also. I’m not worried (except about Joe’s inability to use a bullpen properly) at this point in the season. We’ll rebound, and be ok. And Chase Wright is gutsy, and I think he’ll actually be a pretty good lefty starter in the future, after more seasoning in AA or AAA, but leftys always get the benefit of the doubt, so don’t be surprised to see him in a year or two. I like the kid.
Proctor is abused (see reference to Torre). Minky and Nieves are usesless, and Melky will improve over time. I’d rather use Phelps as my backup catcher, trade Pavano for Navarro, give away Minky, and add a reliever to the pen, based on Torre’s abuse.
