Another day, another homer for A-Rod

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 23, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

If Schilling, Beckett and Matsuzaka couldn’t deal Alex Rodriguez an 0-for, what chance did Casey Fossum have?

The 32 RBI are his most ever in a month.

He has hit safely in every game his team has played this season, the only big leaguer to have done that. His hitting streak is 23 going back to 2006.

A ridiculous 20 of his 27 hits have been for extra bases.

I read somewhere that the record for the best month for the Yankees belongs to Roger Maris, with something looking like A-Rod’s stats. Maybe the record now belongs to A-Rod?

  2. kate April 23rd, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Hey Pete, not related to this game, but were you on the field during BP at Fenway at all?
I think I have you in a shot or two…can’t be sure yet though.

  3. Dan Watowski April 23rd, 2007 at 7:40 pm

    TRADE THE BUM!

I wonder if everyone in NY will still cheer him if he goes through an 0-30 slump at some point this season.

  4. Frank April 23rd, 2007 at 7:40 pm

    Hey Pete,

How area the cowbells treating you?

  5. Ryan April 23rd, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Just like that Kei can’t find the zone to save his life.

  6. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 7:41 pm

Igawa NEEDS TO FOCUS AND THROW THE STRIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 7:43 pm

ARod is fast becoming the only reason to watch Yankee games.

Igawa again can’t find the plate and the bullpen looks to be needed for another long stint tonight.

Man, I’d give anything to have a Yankee starting pitcher, not named Andy Pettitte, throw a quality game.

  8. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 7:43 pm

Derek “no range” Jeter just blew it.

  9. Doreen April 23rd, 2007 at 7:43 pm

I thought I just heard “past a diving Jeter.”

  10. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 7:45 pm

Not much of a dive though.

  11. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 7:45 pm

    This is a joke.

  12. mike f April 23rd, 2007 at 7:46 pm

now what are we going to do?

  13. A-Rod for Prez April 23rd, 2007 at 7:46 pm

Igawa stinks. Rasner stinks. Karstens stinks. Wright stinks. Is there anyone that DOESN’T stink that can pitch? Now hiring.

  14. hmmm April 23rd, 2007 at 7:47 pm

that HR is partially on Jeter. a ML SS has to make that play.

  15. Ryan April 23rd, 2007 at 7:47 pm

over/under for innings Andy pitches tonight?

  16. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 7:47 pm

Kei Igawa. $46 million dollars of pure garbage.

Kid can’t pitch one quality major league inning and he is in the starting rotation.

That says all you need to know about the state of this team.

  17. Russell April 23rd, 2007 at 7:48 pm

Yea, he is pretty bad. We got the wrong scouting report.

  18. Ryan April 23rd, 2007 at 7:48 pm

If Deker makes that play, it’s still a grand slam. Don’t suggest he’d be able to make the throw.

  19. Lori April 23rd, 2007 at 7:48 pm

Well, no matter what, Phil Franchise can’t do much worse than what we’ve had. Perhaps we’ll find another Wang.

  20. anaconda April 23rd, 2007 at 7:48 pm

Just blew it? That ball was so far in the hole that he probably wouldn’t have been able to throw anyone out anyways.

C’mon, there was only one Ozzie Smith.

  21. Lori April 23rd, 2007 at 7:49 pm

Considering Andy is in NY, chances are probably pretty slim. Unless he’s on his way to the airport now.

  22. Jer April 23rd, 2007 at 7:49 pm

    This is painful to watch.

  23. A-Rod for Prez April 23rd, 2007 at 7:49 pm

So, I take it we STILL have NOTHING to worry about. Right? Give me a break. This is a bonafide mess and to say otherwise is flat out stupid and naive.

  24. Ryan April 23rd, 2007 at 7:49 pm

The way Igawa can’t find the plate, the only thing to do is panic.

  25. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 7:51 pm

I’d rather have a guy who can throw the ball over the plate, than blaming the inning on Jeter.

This is the worst pitching staff in the majors. I don’t care if Ozzie Smith is playing SS, Igawa is still garbage. He just can’t pitch at this level and he shows it every start.

  26. vin April 23rd, 2007 at 7:51 pm

I have a sneaking suspicion that this will be one of those “take one for the team” starts by Igawa.

  27. Ryan April 23rd, 2007 at 7:52 pm

“I have a sneaking suspicion that this will be one of those “take one for the teamâ€? starts by Igawa.”

    aka, 12-7 Tampa win.

  28. Friedman April 23rd, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Yes. Yes. Panic. That’s it. Because it’s never stupid or naive to panic in April.

  29. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 7:53 pm

True knocking A-Rod for Prez. And SJ44 go watch yourself some Royals games for bad pitching staffs, I don’t think they have any 19 game winners , HoF closers, or Pettites in there.

  30. Frank April 23rd, 2007 at 7:54 pm

Does anyone think that Boston may hit 5 homeruns in a row against Igawa on Friday, and let Wright off the hook….lol

  31. A-Rod for Prez April 23rd, 2007 at 7:54 pm

You know what’s going to be so funny and ironic? When A-Rod opts out not because the fans drove him out of town or because he could get more money elsewhere but because this team is an embarrassment and if he would like a chance to win and not be embarrassment, this isn’t the place to be. This pitching is flat out disgraceful. Heads need to start rolling here…

  32. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 7:55 pm

    12 to 7 or 21 to 7 Ryan?

  33. Tim April 23rd, 2007 at 7:56 pm

Ok Pete, Igawa sucks, Karstens sucks, Chase Wright proved he was in A ball for 5 years for a reason, Pavano will never be the pitcher the Yankees thought that they were getting and is out indefinitely, that leaves very old brittle pitchers: Pettitte, Mussina (who’s still out) and Wang, so what does that leave: ???? Rasner? Come on, please embrace this move by Cashman/Big Stein to bring up a much more mature (than 20 years old) Phil Hughes who is not just another 20 year old, he is the #1 pitching prospect in all of baseball. How dare you say that this was a panic move. It is the right move at the right time and we need to embrace it and hope that this kid is the real deal, in the end the Yankees have no other choice. Cashman must hate the media for questioning moves that they had to make and make it sound like its a panic move, shame on you!

  34. Ryan April 23rd, 2007 at 7:56 pm

great, we’re playing small ball. Like bringing a switchblade to a gunfight.

  35. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Yo Tim, I don’t think we need the Dead Poets Society posting here man, calm down some.

  36. anaconda April 23rd, 2007 at 8:01 pm

It is a panic move to bring up Hughes now. I don’t want to see the same thing happen to Hughes that has happened to King Felix and Liriano last season.

He has a 20-yr old arm and there is a reason why we haven’t seen a ton of arms that young in the major leagues. Nature has proven that arms that young need time to develop in order to condition it to pitch 200 innings.

Maturity doesn’t have anything to do with the natural development and conditioning of a young arm.

  37. A-Rod for Prez April 23rd, 2007 at 8:01 pm

It’s the 3rd inning with no one out and a man on second and Melky bunts. Brilliant move, hack.

  38. Tim April 23rd, 2007 at 8:03 pm

It’s just sickening to watch mediocre pitching night after night after freaking night! And if you’re ok with mediocrity than lets keep Hughes down in AAA till he’s 35. But hey there will be some that will say that even 35 is too soon! He’s a legitimate #1 starter prospect and its time to let him show that and end this run of mediocrity!

  39. Jennifer April 23rd, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Hey Peter can you take one of the cow bells and shove it down the hecklers mouth?

  40. anaconda April 23rd, 2007 at 8:05 pm

    Prez,

Perhaps you should just end the torture and turn off your TV.

I guess you would’ve preferred to see Melky swing away and risk getting no runs at all.

It’s 2-run game and the Yanks can tie it up with one swing. I don’t have a problem with Melky’s bunt one iota.

  41. Friedman April 23rd, 2007 at 8:06 pm

Look my friends. The team is in a hard spot. But I’ll take a hard spot in April any day. Of course it’s not ideal to bring Hughes up. But a necessary move is not a panic move. And it’s still too early to write off every pitcher in the system. Best case scenario is that Hughes makes one start, gives up 3 runs in 5 innings, and gets the victory. Then send him down with something to work on and back to the development plan. If he gets bombed in 2 innings it’s bad. If he takes a no-no into the 7th it’s also probably bad. But again, we’re a little snakebit at the moment. But at the best time of the year to be snakebit. The team is grinding these games out and showing some heart, which bodes well for the dog days. Let’s both be realistic and show a little heart ourselves.

  42. Will April 23rd, 2007 at 8:06 pm

Arod should be allowed to opt out now. The way the rest of the team is playing and Torre is managing, they don’t deserve to have him.

  43. Friedman April 23rd, 2007 at 8:10 pm

    Nice recovery by Igawa.

  44. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 8:13 pm

    The three time king

  45. Scott Brosius Would make a Good Neighbor April 23rd, 2007 at 8:14 pm

You don’t know what you’re talking about, Friedman. You’re probably A-Rod’s agent.

  46. Jer April 23rd, 2007 at 8:15 pm

Wow, Arod is really keeping this team together.

  47. Friedman April 23rd, 2007 at 8:15 pm

    Oh to be Boras.

  48. Wolf In Pinstripes April 23rd, 2007 at 8:15 pm

Hey Tim, don’t overreact or anything. Yeah, those of us against the move want him to stay in the minors for another 15 years. Geez.

  49. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 8:16 pm

Yo Will, what’s the ****** crack? The Yankees are the Billion dollar, 26 championship having franchise. You are talking like we are the Mets or something.

  50. Ross (nyystadiuminsider.com) April 23rd, 2007 at 8:17 pm

    I

  51. Jennifer April 23rd, 2007 at 8:18 pm

Wow Alex is getting great reads on the balls! He wasn’t fooled at all by the cf’er!

And good answer by Joe G. Kay asks a stupid question, “how would you get Arod out if you were Andy Pettitte? He’s like I don’t want to tell secrets! Good for you Joe. What kind of question is that for Kay to Ask???

  52. Lori April 23rd, 2007 at 8:18 pm

There is a real difference between panicking and being realistic about the pitching troubles this team is facing. Of the originally planned starting 5: Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, Pavano, Igawa, the first hasn’t started a game yet. Mussina and Pavano made a couple not earth-shattering starts, Pettitte gets by and Igawa has been disastrous. While we have a promising farm system, they are not quite ready for the prime time. Our very promising bull pen has been over-used and inconsistent. We are very fortunate to have such a prolific offense or we’d be much worse off than we are.

  53. paul April 23rd, 2007 at 8:18 pm

it must be nice when the other team has more fans than the home team in their park

  54. anaconda April 23rd, 2007 at 8:19 pm

By the way, the moronic decision to play “small ball” has made this a 1-run game.

    Good call, Prez.

  55. jj April 23rd, 2007 at 8:20 pm

if the kid cant handle it they will send him back for more seasoning. BTW Isn’t nice to see our phenom for a change rather than facing everyone elses (Pap or Kazmir)
    everyone chill.

  56. Lori April 23rd, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Pete – Can we get the lowdown on the soda bottle race?

  57. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Tropicana is a ridiculous ballpark, how low is that wall? 2 feet?

  58. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Petite doesn’t get by, he has been lights out except for his first start.

Moose is what he is, he can be relied upon to give consistent innings and have the team in the fight, he´ll be back soon.

Wang will be back in no time.

Igawa is going to be a servisable 5th man when his control is on, at the very least.

Pavano was just holding the seat warm for Clemens or Hughes late in the year.

Rasner and Karstens can fill in for Pavano while we wait on Hughes to come to the majors for good later in the year or for Clemens to get up, cash in and pitch.

The real question is if the pen can hold on while the starters come back.

  59. Stan April 23rd, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Wow igawa is a couple of hot dogs away from being irabu redux.

  60. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Guess Igawa’s control ain’t on tonight

  61. Jamie April 23rd, 2007 at 8:26 pm

    Igawa sucks ass

  62. Stan April 23rd, 2007 at 8:27 pm

anyone else think igawa over lilly was a huge mistake by cashman?

  63. Jake April 23rd, 2007 at 8:28 pm

I think its safe to say that picking Igawa over Ted Lilly was a HUGE mistake.

  64. dmm April 23rd, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Looks like Kei will be out before the 5th. Can any of these !@*&^$% starting pitchers do their !@#$#$# job?! Joe-Ron-Cashman need to get on it… this is such bs.

  65. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 8:29 pm

Igawa will bounce back man, Dice-K is dragging a**, and it is understandable that igawa will too.

  66. Eric April 23rd, 2007 at 8:29 pm

Agree and the worse thing is that Cash will keep him for eyars due to the expensive contract.

  67. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 8:29 pm

I don’t know why you would play small ball with this pitching staff. I agree with Anaconda, it was dumb baseball.

They need to score 10 runs a night to win games. Did Torre actually believe Igawa, who can’t pitch, was going to shut a team down?

Just another example of just how poor an in game manager Torre is without Zimmer.

Dumb baseball and the results show it.

Frankly, I don’t care if Igawa gives up 20 runs tonight. He has to pitch 8 innings and take one for the team. They can’t have another 40 inning week from the bullpen.

We all have seen Igawa is awful. So, if he wants to contribute to the team, eat the innings tonight, regardless of pitch count, then do what every Yankee pitcher does after a rough start. Either goes on the DL or gets sent to the minors.

  68. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Remember that post here last night about Damon and Myers being rats? Over on Pinstripe Bible, Steven Goldman got the exact same thing, with the exact same words I believe.

    http://www.yesnetwork.com/news.....038;vkey=6

That guys James sure has an active imagination

  69. Jer April 23rd, 2007 at 8:32 pm

    Robbie!! Oh yeah.

  70. rock April 23rd, 2007 at 8:32 pm

id take another inning from igawa even if he gives up another run…cANOO!!

  71. Lori April 23rd, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Erick, I hope you’re right about Mussina (whose ERA in the first two games is 9.00) and Pettitte. And here’s hoping Wang will be back and as good as he has been – we don’t have time for him to be rusty. Igawa doesn’t appear to be servisable, even as a 5th starter. We can hope for Clemens, but of course there is no guarantee and we need to stay in it until his arrival. And the pen has 6 losses, 6 blown saves, and no saves yet.

Again, I am not one of those panicking. We’ve started slow before and still come back strong. I have no doubt we’ll get there again. But you can’t tell it is not troubling watching this now.

As has been said many times, it comes down to the pitching. Let’s hope the troops are healthy soon.

  72. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 8:33 pm

ROBINSONNNNNN! GUY IS THE NEXT BIG THING.

  73. Chris NJ April 23rd, 2007 at 8:33 pm

I think I forsee a huge contract for Roger Clemens coming. You know he’s loving how, not the Yankees as a team neccesarily, but their starting pitching is struggling mightly.

  74. swo April 23rd, 2007 at 8:38 pm

Can we please stop posting play-by-play anaylysis of the game? Nobody wants to read your “OMG he was out!” posts.

Btw, kasey, have you read Bill Simmons’ latest article? He’s in rare form.

  75. Friedman April 23rd, 2007 at 8:38 pm

SJ44 is the Shlepprock of the blog world.

  76. rock April 23rd, 2007 at 8:40 pm

swo there’s nothing wrong with “play-by-play analysis”. I fyou don’t want to hear it go on another blog, where you won’t get any “play-by-play analysis”.

  77. Chris NY April 23rd, 2007 at 8:40 pm

It’s a good think we’ve never come back from 4 games out of first before. It’s completely impossible to get healthy and make up that deficit over the next 145 games.

If we’re still pitching this poorly in a couple weeks, go ahead and panic. But for right now, get a grip, we’ve been 4 games out MUCH MUCH later in the season than this (last couple weeks) and still WON THE DIVISION.

This blog is being inundated with chicken little garbage lately, annoying and ignorant………………….

  78. Jeff NJ April 23rd, 2007 at 8:40 pm

swo that’s your opinion, a lot of us are interested in talking about the game. Free will and all, read up on it.

  79. Matt Waters April 23rd, 2007 at 8:41 pm

    Great body language from Igawa:

” Wow, I’m really getting torched out here.”

  80. tonyb April 23rd, 2007 at 8:42 pm

    Igawa = Meat

  81. dmm April 23rd, 2007 at 8:43 pm

Surprise…TB scores more runs.. nice work Kei.

  82. rock April 23rd, 2007 at 8:43 pm

anyone think iwamura gave the devil rays tips on how to hit igawa?

  83. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 8:44 pm

Igawa gives up the run the half inning after they scored again. Nice job Kei. Just stay out there and give the ‘pen a night off. The results don’t matter tonight. Resting arms is more important.

But, no, Torre pulls him for Bean. He still thinks he has a pitching staff and is managing like its October.

A perfect storm. Joe Torre’s ineptness and this pitching staff. Wow.

  84. nathan April 23rd, 2007 at 8:44 pm

People get a cold one and calm down.. we are 8-9 not 4-13.. sometimes i have to double check the record considering the panic we see here.. the cliche is a fact” LOADS of games left”.. but TODAY.. Mr Green Tea has to let Igawa go 120 pitches and save a couple of arms..

  85. tonyb April 23rd, 2007 at 8:45 pm

Nope, I think the Devil Rays know how to hit a belt-high 86mph Fastball…

  86. A-Rod for Prez April 23rd, 2007 at 8:45 pm

anaconda: your idea may work if this team were capable of holding a lead at any point in time. Fact is, we can’t. The only way to win is to keep swinging. Especially in the 3rd inning, come on, game is far from over. Worried about Melky not hitting it? Well then maybe he shouldn’t be on the team then.

  87. Ryan April 23rd, 2007 at 8:46 pm

So far, Igawa’s on the Phil Hughes pitch count for the season.

  88. Russell April 23rd, 2007 at 8:46 pm

Another day, another 5th inning exit from Igawa.

  89. Jer April 23rd, 2007 at 8:48 pm

You’re going to have a hard time calming down Yankees fans, nathan, including me. We’re YANKEES fans, we expect a lot from our team, and when they don’t deliver we b**** and moan.

  90. Jennifer April 23rd, 2007 at 8:49 pm

What a shock right Russell? Looks like we have to rely on good old reliable Andy to give us 7-8 innings.

  91. Cumberberg April 23rd, 2007 at 8:50 pm

Yeah, we’re Yankee fans. We expect to win every single game and we should be surprised when we don’t. But this panic does not become us. Show a little swagger people.

  92. rock April 23rd, 2007 at 8:51 pm

the yankees are going to win this game

  93. Chris NY April 23rd, 2007 at 8:52 pm

exactly. Fans of the greatest team in sports, stop acting like a bunch of sissies afraid of the school bully and show some stones. There’s not a team in this league that scares me. Our pitching will get healthy and will come around. Hold off on killing yourselves for a little while, huh?

  94. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Igawa is making it so tough to defend him

  95. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Oh look Igawa pulled a Randy “2005/2006″ Johnson start. w.e.

  96. Jer April 23rd, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Just wait until the Devil Rays’ “bullpen” comses in…

  97. rock April 23rd, 2007 at 8:54 pm

    anyone following the nba playoffs?

  98. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 8:54 pm

    Really, this is pathetic baseball.

They currently have 1 starting pitcher capable of pitching into the 7th inning.

The bullpen is awful. Some guys just aren’t good, others are gassed but the results are still the same.

Igawa is terrible. Giving him the money over Lilly has shown to be a big mistake, regardless of the luxury tax hit.

It has nothing to do with “calming down”. This is disgraceful baseball.

Do you realize, over 80% of the time this season, Yankee pitchers have given up runs the half inning after they score?

No offense, not even one as good as this one, can overcome that type of pitching.

Its an awful pitching staff right now. Easily the worst the Yankees have had in 15 yrs and it may be the worst in the league right now.

Let’s not forget, Mo is even a concern right now.

Its just a bad, bad time right now.

The only hope we have is that Wang can be Wang again pretty quickly. At least that gives them 2 pitchers who can pitch 7 innings.

After that, its a crapshoot the other 3 days.

Tough to win games that way, as we are seeing.

  99. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 8:55 pm

    Rock,

Bet on it, why wouldn’t he?

  100. anaconda April 23rd, 2007 at 8:55 pm

    Prez,

You still have to try and chip away at leads no matter what.

You can’t just sit and wait for the 3-run homer all the time because that’s exactly what has gotten this offense in trouble in years past.

Continuing to chip away and take the runs when you can get them is the smart thing to do. This is the best offense in the game and will always have a shot when they get within striking distance.

  101. nathan April 23rd, 2007 at 8:55 pm

Jer.. i am not sure that we should be like that.. injuries (when it involves people other than Pavano) are chance occurance.. we did open ourselves to that with some old ball players.. but the bright (yes.. there is one) its APRIL and i would much rather the injuries happen NOW than post-August..

  102. rock April 23rd, 2007 at 8:56 pm

    arod is ballin

  103. Rey22 April 23rd, 2007 at 8:56 pm

Playing catch-up to the Devil Rays is rather sad.

  104. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 8:58 pm

    Triple crown, 80 Homers, 200 RBI’s, .400 BA…

WAKE UP Erick… how bout just two of those?

  105. Jer April 23rd, 2007 at 8:59 pm

    nathan,

I never said we “should” be like that. We ARE like that, whether that’s a good thing or not. With that said, I don’t agree with a lot of the negative comments on here, but I’m not predicting doom. The pitching staff is going to get healthy, and we’re going to win a lot of ballgames this year, just like last year, and the year before, and the year before…

  106. Lori April 23rd, 2007 at 9:00 pm

At least our offense continues strong. Averaging something like 6 1/2 runs per game. At least our half innings are fun to watch.

  107. Cumberberg April 23rd, 2007 at 9:01 pm

And on the positive side of the ledger, we have an offense worthy of the name Bronx Bombers. A-Rod is having a record-breaking April. Wang is back this week. It’s fab to see Andy in a Yankees uniform again and he’s pitching well. And yet you’re talking about this team like it’s 0 and 17. This hand-wringing lacks the prespective that the baseball season is about running a marathon, not a sprint. Honestly, some of these comments sound typical of my Red Sox fans about their own team when that inevitable summer swoon rolls around… Swagger folks, swagger.

  108. UNCYankee April 23rd, 2007 at 9:08 pm

Melky needs to go back to AAA.

  109. Lori April 23rd, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Is Damon that bad that he’s not available to pinch hit with the bases loaded? Look, I like Melky, but he does have the lowest average of all the guys out there today.

  110. Chris NY April 23rd, 2007 at 9:12 pm

the start a couple years ago was FAR worse than this and we didn’t have this ridiculous amount of injuries to blame…. and yet…….. we won the division. I would hate to have heard some of you guys during that terrible start.

  111. randy l April 23rd, 2007 at 9:13 pm

you know what’s weird, the yankees actually have a better earned run average now than they had for 2006. how could that be and then have a losing record with the top offense in baseball.
the answer is in 1 run games. the yankees are 1-5.

  112. BBFan April 23rd, 2007 at 9:16 pm

Bringing Phil up is a good move.
If he is average in the start he will be back in the minors to further develop. Toronto is a good hiting team, so if he does well he will continue to be in the majors.

Regarding the innings pitched, how does it matter if it is in the minors or majors? They will still monitor his pitch count. He will easily pitch five to six innings and it is better than any thing we have seen recently.

It is very weel possible that within a few weeks, our rotation may be Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, Hughes and Pavano. Yes, Pavano – he will be back. Igawa will be in minors trying to improve his control and getting accustomed to bigger baseball in USA relative to Japan.

Clemens will not come to Yanks. He will go to Astros or to Boston if they are ready to cough up the big bucks. I will not be too concerned about it as he will not do as well in AL as he did in NL last three years.

  113. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Man, Tampa sure can hit. Good BA, right up there with the Yanks on HR’s.

If they had a pitching staff they could make the East into a real war zone. Toronto and Baltimore better watch it in the near future.

Boston and New York are going to have a tough time staying on top for the next fex years with how the East is shaping up.

  114. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 9:17 pm

That’s the combination of bad defense and Mo’s struggles, which had lead to the 1-5 record in 1 run games.

Also, the lack of a true 8th inning guy also contributes because the more guys you use in that role nightly, the fewer fresh arms you have getting the ball to Mo.

  115. Chris NY April 23rd, 2007 at 9:20 pm

good point Erick, haven’t heard anyone on here so far give them credit for having the #2 offense in the league (behind the Yankees). So yeah, our pitching is horrendous tonight, but they’re not exactly the slouches we’re used to Tampa Bay being, they have a very good offense. Luckily, they’re pitching truly is terrible every night, so we’ll always have a chance to come back or beat up their pitching from the start.

  116. Jer April 23rd, 2007 at 9:23 pm

Nothing like polka music and cowbells to enhance the ballgame experience…

  117. paul April 23rd, 2007 at 9:25 pm

their bullpen cannot shut us down

  118. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 9:31 pm

This is frustrating, Phelps can do it all, catch, defend first, and get a few hits… and I have to put up with Mienky and his 1.5 Million dollar deal….. ahhhhhh! It sounds like christmass over there man.

  119. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 9:32 pm

One question maybe one of you guys can answer.

Let’s say ARod has this absolutely amazing, historic year (looks like it). Cashman has no replacement anywhere in the game (via trade or prospect) and to ensure he remains a Yankee and doesn’t have him opt out he extends the contract.

Keep in mind not throw away the old contract, extend the current one. Would such a scenario make the Rangers not responsible for the money the owe him or would they still have to pay up if it was an extension?

  120. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 pm

They are still on the hook.

  121. Bill April 23rd, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Extending the contract would still keep Hicks and the Rangers on the payroll. However, if they throw out this contract or he opts out and then they sign him to a new contract, then Hicks is off the tab.

  122. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 9:36 pm

If they are still on the hook, maybe it makes Cash more leniant towards working an extension.

Though I truly believe ARod will finish the contract and resign with the Yanks so he can pass Barry in pinstripes.

Of course I’m an optimist though.

    Boras sucks.

  123. vin April 23rd, 2007 at 9:38 pm

“If they had a pitching staff they could make the East into a real war zone. Toronto and Baltimore better watch it in the near future.”

John and Suzyn alluded to the prospect of the Rays trading Baldelli for good pitching, but I think it’s probably a year too late. I don’t know if he’ll ever stay healthy enough to be the kind of player he can be. He seems to be the Rays’ version of Pavano… made of glass.

  124. Nick B. April 23rd, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Man Jaret “6 inning max” Wright was better than these guys. Glad he got hurt so no one can second guess that trade where we paid him to pitch against us.
I was against Hughes until tonight and I read jj’s comment. Its not like they have to leave him up in the bigs. Get a few starts out of him, just like ST and send him back with some things to work on. Hopefully his 100 pitches can get more outs than Igawa, Wright, Rasner, Karstens, etc. Man these relievers are getting worked. They might have to bring in a 2nd core of relievers the 2nd half of the season cuz these guys will all be on the DL

  125. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Why does Boras suck? He did his job. He doesn’t work for the team.

If the Yankees want to keep ARod, then they have to pay him.

If they don’t, that’s on the Yankees. Not on Boras or ARod.

Let’s not kid ourselves. The Yankees can pay ARod. If they choose not to, that’s their choice. They have plenty of money.

They better pay him. No ARod this yr, this team would be 3-14 right now, instead of 8-9.

If this stuff keeps up, he will be the only reason folks come to the stadium this yr.

  126. tonyb April 23rd, 2007 at 9:40 pm

It looks like we’re going to use everyone in the Pen except for Farnsworth tonight. I hope that means Mo closes it out.

  127. Nick B. April 23rd, 2007 at 9:42 pm

If I was ARod I would opt out and take less money somewhere else just to stick it to the idiots who booed him. I am a huge Yankee fan and I think that would be totally justified. He puts up better numbers than anyone on the team last year, yes Jeter had a better BA but didn’t put up close to the all around numbers of Arod yet he got booed every game. I want him on the team for the next 10 years but he is totally justified to walk off into the sunset with his pride intact.

  128. vin April 23rd, 2007 at 9:42 pm

“Though I truly believe ARod will finish the contract and resign with the Yanks so he can pass Barry in pinstripes.”

I do think he’ll stay with the Yanks, but I believe he will renegotiate after this year. Everyone has painted him as being all about the huge contract, but let’s not forget it was the players’ union that wouldn’t allow him to take a pay cut to play for the Sox. He cares WAY too much about his image to leave a franchise like the Yankees considering all he’s been through the past few years.

  129. Frank April 23rd, 2007 at 9:43 pm

Who thinks that we will use everyone in our bullpen tonight?

  130. Nick B. April 23rd, 2007 at 9:45 pm

    vin,

yeah but he cares enough about himself to know that he will get booed if he doesn’t set all-time records to start every season. if he hit .280 with 6 homers this season the team would suck and he would be booed out of the stadium. a lot of other players aren’t carrying there load and they get a pass. If I was him and I was carrying this team while others are struggling w/o getting booed I would be mad.
He should call out Moose and tell him to get his butt back b/c I’m sure if it was the other way around big mouth Moose wouldn’t be able to stop talking

  131. anaconda April 23rd, 2007 at 9:46 pm

    Nick,

Agreed. It’s deplorable what the “fans” did to that guy until the last few weeks.

I don’t want to see him leave, but I wouldn’t blame him one bit if he did.

  132. Erick April 23rd, 2007 at 9:49 pm

He sucks because he is a good at what he does.

I agree with you, players have a right to get paid, if anyone is dumb enough to pay 252 million, way more than the next guy, by all means take it.

In fact I look at Andruw Jones this year and I feel sorry for him. He already turned down millions to give the Braves a home town discount.

Now the Braves will want the same this year. Why should he loose out on money and not get paid just because the Braves won’t pony up?

It would be great for a player like him to finish his career for his original team, but no one in Atlanta or anywhere should hold it against him if he opts to go elsewhere (which he should, he deserves it and is one heck of a player).

I’m all for the players getting paid if there is someone out there willing to pay it.

I just wish Boras would think “hmm… let him remain a Yankee get paid his 81 million, then when the contract ends we can get an evn bigger boatload of cash with a more inflated market, ARod nearing 700 and closing in on Aaron and Bonds, after all who wouldn’t pay to have those chases on their team?”

Specially Steinbrenner loving history and all.

  133. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Why would he want to stay with the Yankees? For this?

Face it, he is gone after this year.

Enjoy him for this season and be ready for SERIOUS rebuilding after this year.

This ia an awful baseball team.

  134. Nick B. April 23rd, 2007 at 9:59 pm

I’m not pushing the panic button b/c the offense is going to carry this team into contention but this isn’t a very good team.

    No 1st baseman
2nd/SS/3rd solid for years to come
LF Matsui has a garbage arm and needs to stay healthy
CF I can throw better than Damon
    RF Solid but no contract
Bullpen Besides MO one of the worst of the potential contenders
    Starters
Moose: Sucks, he is old and done for, you guys can hope but he is a league average pitcher and would be #5 on the Sox
Pettite: Solid for this year, maybe
Igawa: Garbage, we didn’t have a 88 MPH junkball thrower in the minors????
    Pavano: Enough said
    Wang: Hope last year wasn’t a mirage but he isn’t a #1
Don’t talk about the minor league system b/c most of you guys don’t realize how few minor leaguers make it in the bigs. Hughes may be a #1 but the next best pitcher in our system will be lucky to be a #4 or 5 on a championship team. This isn’t Willis, Beckett, Pavano, Penny, Burnett coming up in our system

  135. Nick B. April 23rd, 2007 at 10:01 pm

I would rather look at ugly, old Randy Johnson for the rest of my life than see Vizcaino pitch. He sucks, whoever said they saw him pitch a lot for the Brewers and he was garbage, hit the nail on the head

  136. gargoyle April 23rd, 2007 at 10:01 pm

Watching Torre manage this bullpen each night is painful.

He just needs to cease the endless pitching changes and let some of these guys sink or swim.

I’d love to hear what the pitchers say about him out there in the bullpen.

  137. GoYanks April 23rd, 2007 at 10:16 pm

Why pinch hit damon for phelps??? He can tie it with one swing. Pinch hit Damon for Melky.

  138. paul April 23rd, 2007 at 10:34 pm

    woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  139. gargoyle April 23rd, 2007 at 10:34 pm

    Is Torre even paying attention?

First of all why PH Damon for Phelps instead of Melky? Then he replaces Melky in CF – with Damon. WTF?

  140. paul April 23rd, 2007 at 10:35 pm

it is going to suck when he opts out

  141. YankeesLuv April 24th, 2007 at 12:01 am

why shouldn’t Arod make the money he makes, baseball is big business and he’s if not the best, then he’s top two. Jeter makes over 20 mill, and god bless him he’s great for us but he ain’t really a 20 mill player.
