Cashman on Phil Franchise

Peter Abraham

Just spoke to Brian Cashman. He said Phil Hughes’ stay with the Yankees is directly tied to how long Mike Mussina is on the disabled list.

“He could be here for one start, it depends on when Moose comes back,” the GM said.

I asked Cashman why they had abandoned their development plan for Hughes so quickly.

“I always said that those were theories. The reality of the season and our needs took precedence. We need a starter and he is the player best prepared to give us a start,” Cashman said.

So does this suggest Moose isn’t as ready to come back as was thought?

  2. Reflaxion

In other words, as long as Moose doesn’t Pavano the ballclub, everything will be back to normal soon.

  3. jk

Steinbrenner must have read him the riot act after the fiasco in Boston.

  4. Kyle Litke

I wonder if they’ll stick to that if Hughes has a great start.

  5. Jeff NJ

The word on Moose was one rehab then a start next week in Texas. Pavano may be out awhile though so I anticipate Hughes will take over the 5th spot for Karstens after he is sacrificed on Friday. Hughes is here until Pavano gets back at least.

Here’s what I think regarding what the Yankees say versus what they do. The are obliged to give press conferences and answer questions. They are under absolutely no obligation to fully disclose their plans, strategies, etcetera. Therefore, anything that comes out of their mouths has to be taken with a grain of salt, realizing that they (especially Cashman) play things close to the vest.

Also, stuff happens. Best laid plans, yadda, yadda, yadda.

  7. Stormy

One has to assume that if Hughes is lights-out, Karstens is a goner when Moose comes back. And that Pavano or Igawa will not be pitching in the rotation once (if) Pavano gets healthy.

  8. Russell

A lot of this has to do with Chase Wright giving up 4 consecutive homeruns haha

So who gets DFA’d then?? Hughes isn’t on the 40 man roster so somebody has to pass through waivers then.

“Steinbrenner must have read him the riot act after the fiasco in Boston.”

Good Line. Cashman needs to stop being tight with Theo, get on a plane to Texas and convince that backstabing son of a gun Clemens to get used to the idea of living in Trump Towers for half a season.

  11. Russell

Pete – how many pitches do you think they will let Hughes go to? If it is a small number, don’t you think they should go with someone else considering they need to give the bullpen a rest?

  12. Jeff

i think it’s funny that you guys actually believe that Steinbrenner is behind this move. Cashman stayed on the basis that he would have full control over player personnel. He might accept meddling in some issues, but Hughes is THE future–Cash certainly maintains full control over his development. i also don’t understand what the big deal is. I trust Cashman, and I believe that throwing 6 innings against Toronto as opposed to against Syracuse will not make the slightest difference in his development or future health.

  13. Russell

what a relief having Matsui back.

  14. Gonzo

    Hopefully Mienky 2007 Yankees.

  15. Harry

I imagine Humberto Sanchez goes to the 60-day DL to make room for Phil. Doing so frees up the 40-man spot.

  16. 2007 Yankees

Good call Harry…he is listed as only 15 day DL

You don’t like Minky’s .167 BA Gonzo?? lol

  18. Jer

For the love of God, can someone please take away those cowbells.

    Pete, I feel for you.

  19. Kat

    cowbell night is annoying already!

  20. Skippy

Light rain is predicted for Thursday. I am selfishly happy about this because I unfortunately am stuck with theater tickets for that night and hope the game will be either delayed or cancelled.

After spending two days in Boston, and watching a manager and a pitching coach who have no idea how to handle a pitching staff and how to attack hitters, the LAST thing I want is Joe Torre having the opportunity to mess with Phil Hughes.

A panic move by the Yankees and now you have a manager, who has destroyed his bullpen in three weeks and has a history of ruining arms, now getting the chance to have at the best prospect in the Yankees system.

A big mistake, IMO. I wish Hughes nothing but the best but he isn’t the answer. A bad move all around.

  22. Nate FrstHills

Nice D A-rod. I personally believe him when he says he wants to stay. you guys?

  23. Lori

It is more than those cowbells. I’m listening to WCBS, and between the press announcements coming into the booth every minute, and the sound effects after every pitch, this game is going to give me a headache. I just have to hope that the Yankees playing will help.

  24. Gonzo

Yeh, I love paying 9,000 dollars per .001, 2007 Yankee. Hahah hes such a joke, theres no place for this guy in NY.

  25. Jeff NJ

There are currently only 39 people on their 40 man roster so no move is necessary, contrary to what Michael Kay said.

  26. Jer

He makes it look sooo EASY!!!!!

  27. Gonzo

    A ROD HOMER!!!
    WOOOHOOOO!!!!

  28. Lori

No way. No way. I love this man.

  29. vin

The way Alex is going, Giambi is going to finish the year with 40 RBI.

  30. hmmm

the yanks actually only had 39 men on the 40 man. no roster move needed.

  31. Taylor

My guess is that he’ll be up for the remainder of the season. He’ll get 2 starts at least, and by then he’ll have shown enough that he belongs.

Even when Moose comes back, we’ll have Wang, Pettitte, Moose, Igawa?, and Rasner/Karstens/Hughes. If Hughes is pitching better than those guys (not Wang, Pettitte, and Moose), he’ll stay up.
