Pregame chatter: Posada is back but Johnny Damon is out again. Same problem as Saturday. … Had a chance to speak to Chien-Ming Wang and he says he’s ready to throw 100 pitches tomorrow. As we were talking to the Wanger, Alex Rodriguez stepped and hugged him. “So good to see you,” he said.

Interesting. Posada’s playing? And Damon is not. Oh, well. You get the feeling with Wang that if they asked him to throw 200 he’d do it.

  2. Brian April 23rd, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Alex…couldn’t have said it better myself.
Thank god your back Wanger…we’ve missed you.

  3. Chris NY April 23rd, 2007 at 5:16 pm

Any updates on Mussina? Last I heard, he may be back by the weekend…?

  4. Joe from Long Island April 23rd, 2007 at 5:16 pm

I wonder if, now with Matsui back, that we see Damon take a couple of days off in a row, to rest his hamstring/back problem. He was saying that he hasn’t been fully healthy for a while.

  5. Josh April 23rd, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Alex’s huge for Wang was from all of us. Really excited to see what he’s got this season.

  6. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 5:19 pm

    LOVE THE WANGER

  7. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 5:20 pm

OH NO… WHY IS LECHE LEADING OFF AGAIN MANNNNNNNNN!?!?!

  8. Justin April 23rd, 2007 at 5:21 pm

You were talking about Hughes and injuries, and nobody knows what causes pitcher’s elbows and shoulders to go. No study has ever conclusively shown what it is.

Hughes has flawless mechanics and a perfect pitcher’s build. I’m not an advocate for calling him up now, but if the injury train keeps rolling along, it would not be the worst idea ever.

If not, at least call up Clippard. His ceiling is much lower and it would give him an opportunity to sink or swim.

  9. gargoyle April 23rd, 2007 at 5:22 pm

I’m pretty damn sick of Damon and his various injuries. He wasn’t healthy all last season and he looks to be headed the same way this year. Makes you wonder what he spent his offseason doing.

  10. A-Rod for Prez April 23rd, 2007 at 5:23 pm

Alex summed up the feelings of the entire fan base and Yankee organization right there with that hug.

  11. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 5:28 pm

He was too bussy driving his F430 “Puma Gift” Ferrari with his wife, gargoyle.

  12. Russell April 23rd, 2007 at 5:28 pm

Pete – Josh Phelps is an adequate back-up catcher. I know he hasn’t done it for a couple of years but don’t you think he is a better weapon than Nieves?

  13. Colin April 23rd, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Gargoyle – you cant really complain about Damon’s injuries, yeah he played injured last year, and he still had an awesome year. Thats one thing you can’t take from Damon, he plays injured, some guys on the team could learn a lesson from him *cough*pavano*cough*

  14. Joe from Long Island April 23rd, 2007 at 5:30 pm

    Gargoyle –
Damon broke a bone in his foot in Toronto in April, running into the centerfield wall chasing after a shot that Randy Johnson gave up. Although he also banged his head into the wall, he managed to hold on for the final out of an inning with men on base, saving a few runs. He then stayed in the game, and played for most of the rest of the season. His numbers for the season were pretty representative, though he did show more power (24 homers, I think) than was expected by anyone.

    Not exactly a slacker.

  15. Drive 4-5 April 23rd, 2007 at 5:32 pm

As scary as it sounds, I’d like to see more of Phelps at first base. Until our pitching gets straightened out we cant afford to give away at bats. Doug M just aint cutting it.

  16. Chris NY April 23rd, 2007 at 5:32 pm

Gonzo, the Melk-man did well in the lead-off spot last year. Now that he’s hitting this year, he will again. I’m glad to see him in that spot in JD’s absence.

gargoyle, his toe was basically “mangled” (as Torre or someone said it last year) and he played through pain all year and had a great year. You’d rather not hear about it and have him on the DL where a lot of guys with his injury/ies would have been? It’s not football, but it’s a sport, people get hurt. Plus, he’s not that young a guy.

  17. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 5:34 pm

While that is true Chris, Jeter is one hell of a leadoff man himself.

  18. Huuz April 23rd, 2007 at 5:40 pm

I haven’t chimed in for awhile but criticizing damon is not reasonable in this situation. he plays hard all the time and even though i was suspicious of the so–called “good clubhouse/chemistry” label that he has, in reality he has proved to be great for this team. the anecdote about him yelling at everyone to “F-ing wake up” late last season (until RJ stared him down) and the moustache growing business are just two examples which show how he has been a boon to the emotional vibe of the team.

statistically he had one of his best years last year and he played hurt a lot. give him a break. he isn’t part of the problem right now.

  19. HALLELUJAH HOLLA BACK! April 23rd, 2007 at 5:43 pm

Why not send Nieves back and keep Phelps as our backup catcher? I know it’s a long shot, and I’ve heard that his arm is terrible (meaning many steals), but if he worked on it a bit, it’d be better to see him catching than Nieves and his lack of offense.

That way we could add another arm to the bullpen… A long reliever maybe? As long as it isn’t Villone right now lol.

  20. Huuz April 23rd, 2007 at 5:43 pm

ps. let’s just leave phil hughes at SWB for the whole year. spring training demonstrated he has a ways to go. we haven’t reached the tim redding/darryl may level yet, so let’s leave our top prospect be…

  21. Go NYR April 23rd, 2007 at 5:43 pm

Im really starting to hate Damon. I have never really liked him and this injury stuff is a little much. He is like Carla

  22. Kyle April 23rd, 2007 at 5:45 pm

Is it true that Phillip Hughes will start on Thursday??? One of my buddies just left me a message saying so, but I can’t get through to him to find out where he heard it. Anyone hear this??

  23. SAM April 23rd, 2007 at 5:45 pm

I want KT to get a start. I see more potential in him then Melky.

  24. Jeff A. April 23rd, 2007 at 5:46 pm

According to the Michael kay show found out here

    http://www.scoutyankees.forumup.us

  25. Drive 4-5 April 23rd, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Do the Damon bashers know that he is one of only 6 major league players with 10 or more years of service that has never been on the DL?
    Johhny Damon is the anti-Carla!

  26. SAM April 23rd, 2007 at 5:47 pm

Heard it on TMKS as well

  27. JDnotDrew April 23rd, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Chris- I’m not convinced that Hughes should come up. Yet, how is it that Dice K I saw, threw 250 pitches in high school, followed the next day by a relief appearance, then two days later pitched another complete game(no hitter). I know that the intensity levels aren’t the same but he also continued to pitch a bunch. How has his arm not fallen off yet? We doin somethin wrong over here or is he just the exception to the rule? Either way I say Hughes stays down and let’s his arm develope. He doesn’t have big league stuff yet anyway. I don’t want to see him get shelled like Wright did.

  28. JDnotDrew April 23rd, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Sorry – Justin not Chris on last post.

  29. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 5:49 pm

You should be hating Giabi if anyone Go NYR, the guy gets paid Jeter, borderline A-Rod money and does not do jack. He swings for the fences all the time, so its either a K, fly-ball or a HR, and the Yankees don’t even trust him with defense. 20 million for 35 homers, and above-average pitch selection.

  30. tonyb April 23rd, 2007 at 5:49 pm

Hughes goes thurs night against the Jays. M&MD just announced it.

  31. Fernando Alejandro April 23rd, 2007 at 5:50 pm

Oh my goodness, Go NYR you gotta be kiding me. Like Carl Pavano? Damon has missed the DL even though he should have been there since last season, and you’re comparing him to Carl Pavano? The guy who played with a broken bone in his foot, a hurt shoulder and back, and your comparing him to Pavano? If Pavano was half the man as Damon, we would have gotten a season out of him last year. So please tell me your kidding, because otherwise you’re just making ignorant comments.

  32. WeMissPaulie April 23rd, 2007 at 5:50 pm

    Well, here we go.

They have no choice, but they’re not throwing him vs the Red Sox.

    Good news.

  33. Drew April 23rd, 2007 at 5:53 pm

    This is a panic move.

  34. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 5:55 pm

    “This is a panic move.”

    Understatement of the ******* century.

  35. murphydog April 23rd, 2007 at 5:57 pm

Hughes is going to start Thursday?!?!?!?!?

Now I have to go back to the last thread and apologize to about 10 people for criticizing their suggestion to let Hughes start. CRAP!

  36. saucy April 23rd, 2007 at 5:57 pm

i really hope this isn’t true. i just looked and saw hughes pitched the 6th, 12th, 18th and figured he would start in swb tomorrow so i bought a pair of tix for the old man and i. what a horrible son this would make me!

  37. Chris NY April 23rd, 2007 at 5:59 pm

Gonzo, I agree Jeter is definitely a great leadoff hitter, no doubt, but he’s an even better #2 hitter, and the Jeter/Abreu/A-Rod order is working quite well right now, aint broke don’t fix….

  38. Jeff NJ April 23rd, 2007 at 6:01 pm

That’s fine but we still need a pitcher for Thursday better than crappy Karstens. My idea is to push Pettitte back to Friday and have Hughes pitch Wed, but guess that’s not happenning.

  39. Bill April 23rd, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Hughes on Thursday is a mistake.

  40. Andrew April 23rd, 2007 at 6:05 pm

Hughes on Thursday makes no sense. He’s scheduled to pitch tomorrow, so they’d be throwing him off his schedule and messing him up.

It’ll be DeSalvo or Clippard. Probably DeSalvo.

  41. Andrew April 23rd, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Edit: Nevermind. Argh. Hopefully they’ve seen something which means he’ll be up for the rest of the season, because I don’t want our guy to be bouncing between AAA and MLB all year.

  42. Gonzo April 23rd, 2007 at 6:17 pm

SportsCenter is disrespecting the Yankees, Disrespecting Rivera. Rivera is better than Papelbon and Steve Phillips gave Mo props and that stupid son of a gun Brian Kenny was seriously debating it.

  43. randy l April 23rd, 2007 at 6:25 pm

    murphydog-
maybe you were right about not bringing up hughes. that would mean cashman is wrong. uh oh. you’re between a rock and a hard place, admit cashman is wrong or apologize to the 10 people . i’m just busting you.
there’s way of telling what will happen. personally, i’d wait to bring him up because it’s better to err on the side of caution.
i saw matt garza pitch the other night in pawtucket. when you see him in person ,you can tell that he’s not emotionally ready for the major leagues, and he started 7-10 games in 2006. it’s not just stuff and command.
even if he wins a few games, it still could be a bad move with hughes. that said, i know we’ll all be hoping he does phenomenal thursday. the yankees may not be good yet, but are anything but boring this year.

  44. johnson April 23rd, 2007 at 6:51 pm

Thanks GOD ! Wang is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go yankee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  45. Jen April 23rd, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Really excited to see Wang back. Hope Moose is back soon as well..

  46. Yeah April 23rd, 2007 at 9:45 pm

What an awful signing Igawa was, he is terrible and is wrecking our bullpen

  47. Eric838.lin April 24th, 2007 at 2:19 am

For the Yankee’s four consecutive loss. Anybody knew the Aaron Small ?
