Joe Torre on March 14

“A lot of things have to happen for us to consider (Hughes) this year. Our goal is to have him have a good year under his belt as far as a complete season down there. That doesn’t mean we won’t see him at the end of the year.”

If by a lot of things you mean three starters on the disabled list and Chase Wright getting torched by the Red Sox, I guess a lot of things have happened.

It’s amazing they’ve come to this so early in the season.

Once Hughes takes the mound, the Yankees will have used nine starters this season.

Well at least its not like 2005 where we lost two starters permanently, and one for about 3 months.

Pete, what the heck is up with the music there?

  3. Jeff NJ April 23rd, 2007 at 6:46 pm

The future starts Thursday. It can’t get here soon enough. However, keep those expectations down, I doubt he’ll fare much better than Wright did for a few starts.

  4. Go NYR April 23rd, 2007 at 6:49 pm

How could he fare any worse than Wright. If anything he will do much better than Wright seeing as Wright has 2 pitches and tops out in th high 80s and has trouble keeping the ball down and so on and so forth. He will do just fine

  5. Zander April 23rd, 2007 at 6:51 pm

So Melky leads off with his .197 – .229 -.197 (ZERO extra base hits) and Cano bats 8th. Hey, Mr. Green Tea, wake up.

I was just going to say how this is happening way earlier than even I expected it. I said we would need Hughes by early May. I have to say if anyone is shocked that pavano and Moose are already on the dl they havent been following baseball. The chances that all five or even four of the starters would get thru the first month was slim to none when considering pavanos health history and how many times Moose and Pettitte have been on the dl in the last three yrs. You combine that with Igawas inexperience and you start to realize it wasnt all that hard to predict this situation in the previous off season. Granted, I did not think wang was going down in spring but other than that everything wasnt very unpredictable.

Two yrs ago we started 17 pitchers I believe and that was breaking some sort of record. We are well on our way of shattering that one.

I cant wait to see phil on thurs. Its strange that a thurs start against the jays in april may become one of the most meaningful starts of the entire regular season. Not to say if Hughes gets torched then its over but if Hughes dominates the jays its a whole new ballgame ladies and gentlemen.

Torre also said Mo would only pitch one inning per game. Torre lies again. He will say or do anything for a contract extension. He will not get one with an early season panic attack.

  8. Dave April 23rd, 2007 at 6:54 pm

I agree- why in gods name is melky leading off – his obp is worse than most yankees batting average right now.

  9. Rob April 23rd, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Well remember Mo’s a one inning pitcher this year, right Joe??? ;)

I think George had a hand in this, but regardless I’m glad they’re going to Hughes. Other teams do it. Why can’t we?

And I totally agree with Zander. Batting Cano 8th is insane. Melky should be batting in the bottom 3 right now.

The Green Tea comment cracked me up too.

  10. Angel April 23rd, 2007 at 6:56 pm

Aren’t they keeping Damon out because they’re playing on turf?

  11. Angel April 23rd, 2007 at 6:59 pm

Other teams do it. Why can’t we?

Possibly because they’ve seen what happens when other teams do it? And the risk might not be worth the short term gain?

Please, Torre is not a liar – things change (like 4/6, including Karstens, of you rotation on the DL at the same time). Torre wanted that win on Friday and using Mo in the eight was the best way (seemingly) to get it. What you didn’t want the team to win?

  13. Rob April 23rd, 2007 at 7:03 pm

Please yourself. Don’t put words in my mouth or say stupid things like I don’t want the team I root for to win.

I can root for the Yankees and still question Torre’s moves and soundbites. Thank You.

And in response to Angel The Yankees are not going to overuse Hughes or abuse him like some other teams abuse their young starting pitching.

Odds are he’ll pitch 2 or 3 games until they have 5 healthy starters. If he sticks around and does well great, if not then he’s gotten MLB experience and he goes back in AAA.

  15. rbizzler April 23rd, 2007 at 7:11 pm

Rob, I was actually referring to jk who called Torre a liar. You can and should do as you please. I just think that calling Torre a liar b/c plans changed due to extenuating circumstances is outrageous and unfair.

  16. jk April 23rd, 2007 at 7:16 pm

Torre called himself a liar after bringing Mo in early on Friday night. Calling up Hughes in April is a bigger lie.

  17. rbizzler April 23rd, 2007 at 7:20 pm

Last I check Torre is not in charge of player development. That is Cashman’s job. BTW, I didn’t hear the Torre comment, but still think it is unfair to think that he is doing anything right now for an extension.

  18. Angel April 23rd, 2007 at 7:27 pm

We’ll see on that one, Rob. Making moves like this in April, doesn’t exactly lead one to have confidence in them not making panic moves at any other stage of the season.

  19. SJ44 April 23rd, 2007 at 7:30 pm

How do you know they aren’t going to abuse Hughes? The manager has already destroyed his bullpen three weeks into the season and now has Andy Pettitte pitching as a starter AND in relief? How long before Andy hits the DL now?

This is a bad, bad move. You want to salvage the season? Fire the manager and get somebody in there who can handle a pitching staff.

Don’t want to fire the manager? Then, put somebody on that bench who understands pitching.

They were in all three games in Boston. The first game was won until Torre decided to wake up on the bench and made some of the worst managerial decisions you can make. He gave the Red Sox the game.

The second game? Shootout-type game and they lost. That’s baseball.

Last night, typical Torre. Blowout Proctor three straight days, keep Farnsworth in drydock (if they aren’t going to use him, waive him. You can’t just have him sit there).

And, after the second home run Wright gave up, I am sorry, somebody on the Red Sox has to go down. No clue how to attack hitters, how to make hitters not feel comfortable, etc.

Now, these guys are going to get the chance to ruin Hughes? Count me as somebody who thinks this is a terrible, terrible decision.

If they hurt this kid, lucid or not, Steinbrenner has to clean house immediately. Putting Phil Hughes in the hands of Joe Torre is a recipe for disaster.
