A-Rod says he’s staying in New York

ph_121347.jpgAlex Rodriguez sat with the media for about 10 minutes in the dugout this afternoon.

His answers weren’t very expansive – which has been a trend this season. Like his swing, he’s simplified everything. It’s a good idea given how often his quotes were puzzling or seemed to advance some sort of agenda.

Now it’s short answers in a far less confrontational manner. It doesn’t make for colorful writing, but it makes sense for him. New Yankees PR director Jason Zillo has helped Rodriguez in that regard.

Near the end, Alex was directly asked about his option and he said without hesitation or qualifier that he would stay in New York. Is that the end of it? Obviously not. But it’s certainly interesting.

Here’s the interview:

    Wow.
Thanks for posting this so quickly. Finally, some good news for the Yankees.

  2. PAT April 24th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

If not for Scott Boras as his rep, I would give his comments some merit

  3. the lopper April 24th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

such a tease. ten minutes of talking blah blah blah … the last three seconds “i wanna stay in new york, thanks guys” ugh. ha.

  4. Brian April 24th, 2007 at 6:34 pm

You can definitely tell the difference the way he handles the interview. Sounds like a different person. Thanks, Peter!

  5. Jeff A. April 24th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

I love how AROD said that he finally realized the difference between REALITY AND PERCEPTION, the haters will always be out there.

  6. Summer April 24th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

Did he seriously say he was “horse**** last year”? Hahahaha

  7. SJ44 April 24th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

He also hit a HR in that interview. Said the right things, the right tone in his answers, etc.

Hope he stays because you can’t lose the best player in the game and be better. Just not how it works.

Kasmir struggled the last time he faced the Yanks. I have a bad feeling that he’ll do well tonight. Look for him to allow 2 runs or less. As for Wang, this being his first start, he will probably have some control problems. He’ll be lucky to give up less than 5 runs. Then it’s our bullpen against theirs; I’m not sure which I like more. yikes! Probably a fifth stright loss for the Yanks. more will be added to the suicide watch after tonight for us fans.

You know you could of done a better job at Trolling im sure there’s a website for your kind where you can pick up some tips not to make it so obvious.

  10. Jeff NJ April 24th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

I agree, that was the most obvious backhanded Yankee bashing. Gotta love his persistence, but does he actually think he seems believable? I would guess he is about 12, giggling in his high pitched voice while his hairless face moved back and forth. What a maroon.

  11. Josh April 24th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Peter, thanks for the audio. I almost thought it would quiet some people down, but I know better.

    How is Damon feeling?

  12. nathan April 24th, 2007 at 6:57 pm

Can someone clarify.. why is it a given that ARod has to decide this year.. as i understand he has this opt-out clause at the end of 2008 season also.. not 2007 alone.. he cud stay one more year.. and then opt out.. i have a feeling he wants to be around for the next few years when the Yanks rotation projects to be young n strong..

  13. B.A. April 24th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

nathan- the earlier ARod opts out, the more years/money he will get on his next deal. If his performance thus far is any indication of the year he will have, then I think its safe to say he will opt out. Just imagine if he didn’t though, that would be something people remembered him for during an era of rampant free agency.

  14. nathan April 24th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

BA – exactly.. and its not a discount either.. he wud still be paid 16 by us.. 9 by TEXAS.. i think Cash$$ will negotiate an extension.. an opt-out followd by a new deal wud mean we get to lose close to 25 mill more being paid by Hicks

  15. ramar April 24th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

Right now A-Rod is Mr. New York Yankee. “He’s the straw that stirs the drink”. Thank you Jesus. Now please God, give us some solid pitching!!!

  16. Chris NY April 24th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

There is a further stipulation on the opt-out after next year, this is the only year he can do it under any circumstance (I don’t remember what the circumstance for next year is, but it’s not gauranteed that he can). After that, he can’t opt out at all.

  17. Ryan April 24th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

Carl Crawford needs to take a pitch around the head. I don’t care if they’re throwing at him or not, this crap is getting tiring.

  18. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

    Chris

It´s something to do with his salary being at more than any other positions player, by like a mil, or something like that.

  19. Rich April 24th, 2007 at 7:16 pm

Boras is the agent. A-Rod is the principal. A-Rod calls the shots.

  20. Chris NY April 24th, 2007 at 7:17 pm

That’s it, Erick. If he’s the highest paid position player, he can’t opt out. Whereas this year, he can regardless. In all likelihood, he’ll still be the highest paid position player next year, so it’s basically now or never.

    Let’s root for never.

  21. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 7:19 pm

Chris, I think that if there was a higher paid position player he can either opt out or his salary most be increased acordingly to match or be higher.

I do´n’t remember exactly, Peter Abraham posted a few weeks ago.

  22. beavis April 24th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

what happened to jeter????? at work and cant watch please help!

  23. Col April 24th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

He’d rather not talk about his offseason diet or workout change? Why not?

  24. Ryan April 24th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

kazmir hit him on the outside of his knee first pitch. Someone needs to take one for Tampa.

  25. jay destro April 24th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

bad hit to the thigh right on the muscle.

    i think it’s precautionary… no word yet

  26. Chris NY April 24th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

I was just about to ask the same thing beavis. Just logged into mlbtv.com and they haven’t said anything yet.

  27. beavis April 24th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

thanks ryan- any idea if its serious?

  28. Angel April 24th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

He got hit by a Kazmir pitch.

  29. Billy Mo April 24th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

Jeter got hit by a pitch in the lower part of his thigh. Looked and sounded like it was all muscle. He was down for a while. He was able to go take his base but I guess Torre is playing it safe and giving him the rest of the night off.

  30. Chris NY April 24th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

I wondered that too, Col. Weird.

  31. Jeff April 24th, 2007 at 7:27 pm

it wasn’t the knee–it was higher on the leg…I thikn it’s muscular too…he never would have stayed in had he broken a knee cap or a ligament

  32. Chris NY April 24th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

Guess that’s what Ryan meant by crawford needing to take a pitch near the head… This is crap.

  33. 2007 Yankees April 24th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

Jeter was coming out of this game soon than later just because of where he got hit. Once that area starts swelling and tightening up, he’d be unable to run and have any kind of range at SS.

Someone needs to get hit on TB and it should have been Crawford…2 outs and nobody on….perfect time

  34. Ryan April 24th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

    wow, 12 pitch inning!

Pete, is Wang on any type of restrictions today?

  35. Jeff April 24th, 2007 at 7:30 pm

don’t worry about retaliating…we’ve lost 4 straight remember? Kazmir has no control and jeter will be fine

  36. Jennifer April 24th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Peter, will we ever have a fully intacted lineup! How many times does Jeter need to be hit! No one can blame that on leaning over the plate :( Hopefully he’ll be okay!!

  37. Chris NY April 24th, 2007 at 7:32 pm

nice inning, let’s hope we see 7 more of those! I think Peter said on here (or I read it somewhere) that Wang is looking forward to throwing 100 pitches, so I’d guess no restrictions. It wasn’t an arm injury, I think he was throwing all along to keep his arm in shape and he said his leg is fine.

  38. 2007 Yankees April 24th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

Jeff: So we give every pitcher who doesn’t have good control a free pass then? I think not!
The Yankees get abused because they refuse to retaliate.
This is for the greater good…..protecting your players goes along way…

  39. Ryan April 24th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

    Godzilla!!!!

  40. Chris in MA April 24th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

    that was a BOMB

  41. Chris NY April 24th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

    Yeaaah, Matsui! welcome back!

  42. Jeff NJ April 24th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Hip hip Jorge! Anyone see that ESPN commercial with Jorge walking down the hall and everyone screaming Hip Hip Jorge whenever he walked by? I hate ESPN but those commercials are funny.

  43. Yanksmitch April 24th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

The commercial with Jorge and Ortiz is even better… “Wally! It’s not what you think!”

Welcome back Matsui indeed! I guess he’s fully recovered.

  44. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 7:46 pm

I hope Jeter will be OK. Doubt anythings broken. He will prob. pinch hit for a couple days if anything.

  45. Eric April 24th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

anybody have analysis on Wang? How’s his sinker and slider working?

  46. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

I am going to marry Wang… right after I marry A-Rod.

  47. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 7:48 pm

Wang seems to have good control… for now at least… this is weird watching a pitcher get people out.

  48. Eric April 24th, 2007 at 7:52 pm

    Hahaha

  49. Ethan April 24th, 2007 at 7:54 pm

Wang and Cano’s success shows me that the Yankees should be putting a lot of money into foreign scouting (and not the scouts that liked Igawa).
I don’t know much about how the scouting business works, but Cashman would be smart to try and hire scouts away from teams like the Twins and Angels, etc., who seem to have had success finding players not through the draft.

Wang is just terrific. I’m finally feeling good about this team again.

  50. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

im waiting till the 6th inning until i say wang is terrific. i might even cry if he makes it through six.

  51. Charlie April 24th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

“Is that the end of it? Obviously not.”

Yeah, because of you damn sports reporters!

  52. Wagner April 24th, 2007 at 7:58 pm

I can’t remember the last time the yanks offense lineup was at full strength. Bad luck continues today. Let’s hope Wang can survive his first outing without getting hurt.

  53. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Why are the yanks trying to bunt so much with no one on base? Is Kazmir a terrible fielder or something?

  54. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

This is definitely encouraging news. I would be so happy to know that A-Rod will be our third baseman for the next 3 to 7 years.

But of course, we take it to mean what it means in the middle of a season before an opt-out clause that can guarantee not only a bidding war to up the numbers in his contract, but also some new options in terms of place. That’s not to say that he wouldn’t want to stay in NY no matter what, and yes, I know the Yankees are one of the only teams out there that can pay for him.

To be fair, isn’t this the sort of thing we all would say in our work situations, knowing perhaps there will be a job opening somewhere else, but saying all the right things you never know how anything will turn out? Or if you want to ensure a positive working environment without contention or bad feelings?

Believe me, I hope he stays, and I felt this way even before spring training because we all know he is so much better than his 2006 stats. But realistically, he might think another market like LA would be better (and Moreno has the cash) and perhaps lower-key than NY in terms of media and fan treatment.

I guess we just wait and see.

My apologies for the slight skepticism, but I remember ’94 when Mike Keenan left the NY Rangers when he publicly said he wouldn’t. I hope it works out.

  55. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

It’s just a shame that the bench is so darn weak. It would be nice to put in someone who at least had a chance of making a contribution. But for some reason, the Yanks just don’t feel a good bench is that important.

  56. eric April 24th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

Anyone think that by “I want to stay in New York” he secretly means “I might go play for the Mets”?

  57. Kentucky Yankee April 24th, 2007 at 8:02 pm

The Mets have this kid named David Wright playing 3rd that I heard is kinda good already though.

  58. nathan April 24th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Mets?? i dont think he will play there after the kind of dirty laundary Steve Phillips laid on him.. when ARod signed with Texas..

  59. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

lizzie, the bench isnt that bad… cairo, kevin thompson, and phelps/minky are adequate i think. its just because our starting players are so much better than other teams’ players that it is hard for the bench players to live up to the hype.

  60. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

I think A-Rod would rather kick himself in the nuts than play for the armpit of new york… i didnt say that.

  61. stuart April 24th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Who got sent down for the Wang move?

    Thanks..

  62. Gayle April 24th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

    kevin thompson got sent down

  63. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

Successful players don’t go from the Yankees to the Mets… thats like going from eating Thanksgiving dinner at the grandparents to a KFC holiday.

  64. A-Rod for Prez April 24th, 2007 at 8:15 pm

Wright is nothing in comparison to A-Rod but he’s good enough that they won’t steal him from us. Thank god.

  65. Jennifer April 24th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

Anyone hear an update on Jeter?

  66. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

I sure hope this team isn’t developing a losers mentality. Lose a bunch of high-scoring games and now tonight they might lose a 2-1 or 3-2 type game.

  67. Joe from Long Island April 24th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

I heard something interesting on YES. Joe Girardi, whose commentary I like, said that Butch Wynegar, who must be one of the coaches down there (Dave Miley, is the manager and Dave Eiland the pitching coach at Scranton), apparently went up to Hughes today and said, “Good luck, we will never see you in AAA again”. Nice to have that sort of send off.

I know that Cash and Torre have all been saying that Hughes should spend more time in AAA, but I wonder if that was all to try and take pressure off him, and lower expectations. We have to remember that what they say in public is not necessarily what is discussed in private.

  68. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

And sure enough, now Wang is in deep trouble.

  69. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

see why i dont say anything till the 6th?

  70. Ryan April 24th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

    awful, awful call at first.

  71. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Yep, so much for this game. This just might be a bad team, folks.

  72. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

yanks are losing… lets just hope wang makes it through 4

  73. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

thats the 2nd time in so many days we got screwed by the high hop on the dirt.

  74. Russell W April 24th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

game is far from over… i just hope wang can make it through 6 and give the pen a rest.

  75. kidjock April 24th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Catch the ball Posada. Bad hop or not.

  76. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

And, I’m sorry, but Wang struggles way too much with runners on base to ever be a real “ace” of a pitching staff. In reality, he’s probably a solid number 2 or 3 guy, but in no way a number 1.

  77. A-Rod for Prez April 24th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

It must be asking too much to play JUST ONE game without injuries. Just one is all I’m asking for.

  78. Al April 24th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

    April 24th, 2007 at 6:22 pm
I think Arod realizes that hero-worship is at its best when in NY. He’s no fool though. He may not opt out – but might work something out where the Yanks tack on 3 years at 28 mill per at the end of the deal. That would kick in after the 3/81 expire on his current deal. Yanks wouldn’t mind paying the big bucks later – new stadium revenue + this way Texas still foots the bill for the next three years.

This off-season is gonna be real interesting…

If I’m Cashman… give Mo a 2-year deal. Give Posada a 2-year deal. I’d take a declining Jorge over 75% of backstops in the league. Same with Rivera. Lock up Cano and Wang long-term. Take care of Arod.

I’m torn on Abreu. Part of me wants to see Melky everyday in RF (he’d be keeping the seat warm for Tabata anyway) but part of me wants to see Abreu back – he fits the lineup perfectly.

However – he’s 33 and some team will give him a dumb 4 or 5 year deal. I’d give him two but I think someone will give him more and he’ll go.

Trade Farnsworth – he’ll be in the last year of his contract. Maybe he fetches a prospcet? Maybe a catcher? Farnsworth to Cleveland (Yanks eat half his $$) for Shoppach?

Shop Giambi. He’ll be in the last year of his deal. If you can deal him (Yanks would have to eat a lot money) – you can still get something back. Angels need a big bat. Plus you can then sign Abreu and play Melky every day by rotating the OF’s among the DH spot.

Trade Pavano. Final year of his deal too. Not sure what you can fetch. But that may have been the worst signing in franchise history. (At least Kenny Rogers fetched Scott Brosius).

You go into the season with Wang, Hughes, Pettite, and Moose in the rotation. Igawa becomes an expensive long man. Gotta eat that one. And you let one of the other young guns battle it out for the #5 spot.

  79. riderstoned April 24th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

    he’ll be fine.

  80. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Come on Wang just got off the disabled list, his only thrown 52. It’s only two runs.

  81. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Only 2 runs, but the Yanks are swinging at a ton of bad balls tonight. I can’t see the Yanks scoring more than 3 or 4 runs, tops.

  82. Jennifer April 24th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

We need to get into the drays pen!

  83. hmmm April 24th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

“Yep, so much for this game. This just might be a bad team, folks.”

hello hello?offense? good to see you back but still equally annoying!!

  84. nathan April 24th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

“lizziemcguire” — wow.. so insightful.. and such concern from a troll

  85. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

    Al,

Abreu stays. Melky isn’t Abreu. I like Melky, but come on, look at the way Abreu has helped ARod.

If only for that he should stay. Let Abreu keep it warm for Tabata for one year.

  86. Wagner April 24th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

The D Rays are just too good. At this point the Yanks–with the way they’re playing–are not even comparable to them. Yanks deserve the last place honor.

  87. SJ44 April 24th, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Hard to blame Wang. A real SS makes the play at first. A catcher who can catch the throw makes the out at the plate.

At some point, all the BS injury excuses aside, you have to win a baseball game. No excuses, no whining about bad calls, none of that crap.

Show up, play hard, play smart, and win a game.

If they can’t do that, then they need to stop talking about winning championships and go back to basics.

This team is a trainwreck right now and its getting worse by the day. Enough with the excuses. Play better baseball or they can enjoy sitting where they are if they lose tonight…..last place.

  88. Jennifer April 24th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

Wagner you clicked on the wrong blog, this is the yankee blog not the met.

  89. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

“This team is a trainwreck right now and its getting worse by the day. Enough with the excuses. Play better baseball or they can enjoy sitting where they are if they lose tonight…..last place.”

I agree. This is just a bad baseball team.

  90. Wagner April 24th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

No offense, no defense, no pitching. The only comfort we get is knowing that Toronto is beating Boston (at the moment). Once that lead is gone, head for the exits, folks.

  91. Jeff NJ April 24th, 2007 at 8:37 pm

Wang’s doing very well, we’ll come back, keep the faith. Nice to finally have a good pitcher on the mound.

  92. Eric April 24th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

Totally unrelated to baseball but the Red Sox trolls in this Yankees blog reminds me of the Chinese trolls in Taiwanese groups/forums.

Can anybody who’s watching the game tell me what happened to Jeter?

  93. Jamie April 24th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Yeah I’m wondering the same thing myself Eric. For some reason SopCast isn’t working today and broadcasting the game.

  94. VTYanks fan April 24th, 2007 at 8:43 pm

Jeez people, I’m just listening, since I’m not able to watch, but calm down people. They are 8-10 and yeah, that is frustrating considering the expectations, but remember two years ago when the Yanks were 11-19? I mean, they came back to win the division that year and this line-up is lightyears better and the rotation is starting to get healthy. Wang tonight, Mussina soon, Hughes? Who knows, but still better than Chase Wright. Plus, don’t worry about the bullpen, as I just hear from the beat writer on the radio, the bullpen ERA is a solid 3.50, but since they have had to pitch every day so much, one pitcher’s bad day a night is compounded to make it look really bad, but once the pitching gets in order, the bullpen will look a lot better.

Anyway, the offense will stay on track, I am certainly not worried about that, and the Red Sox, if you remember won 12 straight last year at one point, and they still crumbled. Schilling is old and the Yankees hit him, Beckett did the same thing at the beginning last year and what happened to him? 5 ERA. Dice-K? I’m not impressed and i have watched EVERY one of his starts and he has done well against mediocre teams (Royals, Mariners, and the Blue Jays without Troy Glaus) and then when he pitched against the Yanks on a national stage, he got hit for 6 runs (and somehow got a standing ovation….). Don’t worry right now. if they are in fourth place one month from now…then I will worry with you. But me, as a Yankee fan who takes it so seriously, I scare people upstairs in my dorm with my yelling when they struggle….dont’ worry people. Everything will work out, even if they lose 2-1 tonight, sometimes that happens.

Go Wang, A-Rod and the rest of the crew!

  95. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

So I guess you no-heart namby-pambies want to trade Alex now. The thing about this chicken-sh*t sky-is-falling-crap is that it is so easy. If they stand up and pull outta this, you’re happy, and if they don’t, then you get to feel smart. Give us a break and move out of your parents’ basements.

  96. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

“Everything will work out, even if they lose 2-1 tonight, sometimes that happens”

    OK, WHY?

The realists/pessimists here at least give reasons why the team isn’t good. All the optimists can say is that the Yanks will win the divison because they have in the past.

This sure looks like a “losing” team in that they will lose games in all sorts of ways. And a very passive manager like Torre is the worst guy for this situation.

    Great play Wang.

  97. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

    Well put VTYanks fan

  98. Eric April 24th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

    Come on…..double play

  99. VTYanks fan April 24th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

But, if Wang got drilled and got hurt…..that is ridiculous….then it might be Karma, or divine intervention or something…

  100. AL April 24th, 2007 at 8:52 pm

3-1 will look like 300-1 with the way the Yanks are swinging the bat.

  101. Eric April 24th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

    YES!!! I CALLED THAT DP

  102. Jeff NJ April 24th, 2007 at 8:55 pm

yes DP baby! Wang is the man at that.

  103. JCR April 24th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

When we finally get a real starter, now where is the offense?

  104. hello?you're lame? April 24th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

Yea, Wang really struggles with runners on base. ::Laughing at the double play::

  105. VTYanks fan April 24th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

And some things to consider with my comments: I don’t believe in God (Jeter is my God), so believing divine intervention is destroying the Yanks is a big deal for me. Secondly, I am the most pessimistic, emotional Yankee fan, so my claim that we should relax a little bit is a big deal. Trust me my fellow fans, who I’m sure are fanatic. Things should work out for the next couple weeks.

Yes there are things to be worried about, but as of right now, i am not pressing panic button, even with Phil Franchise coming up earlier than expected.

Oh and let’s lay off Joe a little bit. Sure I agree with the retaliation people, i certainly think they should stick one in Manny’s earhole sometimes, but I trust Joe. I dont’ think he’s panicking, I just think he’s trying to win some ballgames. Anyway, let’s hope the offense rallies, though Kazmir is dirty. That is one reason I will never listen to anything Steve Phillips has to say on ESPN….he traded Kazmir for Victor Zambrano….

    Go Bronx Bombers

  106. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

Just settle down lizziemcguire. FIrst off, there are pessimists, optimists, and realists. The second two categories of folks here have given plenty of reasons to back their perspectives and done so consistently. Starting itching will get healthy, that will take pressure off the bullpen, the offense will keep going despite off days and these players are showing a lot of grit here grinding these games out, and it’s a sprint not a marathon. It’s the pessimists who have no grasp of reality. And between pulling for your team and pissing on them, I’ll take the former. Anything else is just being soft. Both in the head and in the heart. Let’s Go Yanks. Go NY. And remember, baseball is about angst and joy, poetry and perseverance.

  107. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

“When we finally get a real starter, now where is the offense?”

This is what losing teams do. Score a ton of runs, but get no pitching. Get some decent pitching, but the bats choke. All bad baseball teams go through the same thing.

  108. Eric April 24th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

    Great analysis Lizzie

  109. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

    Reasons we will be better?

Wang and Petite will continually give the pen a rest.

    We have the best offense.

When the pen gets more rest they will be more effective.

Mussina will com back and be a league average pitcher that will give nice innings and keep the team in it.

There is quite a number of prospects, not A level, but B’s and C’s that can get traded for needs.

Once Mussina comes back, Hughes goes back to AAA to continue developing.

Out of Rasner, Igawa and Karstens we will not get great production but have chances to win games.

With more wins, Rivera will get more work and not be rusty when called upon.

The Yanks are the ones with injuries now, just wait for the Sox players to start falling over later in the season.

    Matsui is back.

Britton, along with other relievers can be called upon if fatigue and mismanagement get to the arms in the pen.

Yes, I know. Now there will be like 10 posts saying this or that about my reasons. I don’t care, you have your reasons for giving up, I have mine to look up.

Just, please, when we get back in it, don’t say I knewit all along. Be ashamed for not rooting for your team and always hoping for the worst.

  110. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Ok, naysayers, here we go. All tied up, 2-2. Go Jorge,Go Hideki!

  111. Jeff NJ April 24th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Posada is so f’ing clutch. Hip Hip____

  112. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

“Starting itching will get healthy, that will take pressure off the bullpen,”

I have a feeling the problems with the bullpen are deeper than just the “overworked” excuse.

Vizcaino and Farnsworth can’t be trusted. And Proctor had a good 1/2 of a single season. I’m not so sure what you’re seeing out of them isn’t what they really are.

  113. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

    JORGE!!!

  114. VTYanks fan April 24th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

    HIP HIP JORGE!!!

PS. Wily Mo just dropped a ball in center my dead great-grandmother catches hip high. He is awful….i can’t believe Crisp is an upgrade in this case….

  115. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

    YES!!!!!! PHELPS!!!!!!

  116. Jeff NJ April 24th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

Yes!! There’s your lead, now leave Wang in!

  117. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

VTYanks Fan, where in Vermont are you?

  118. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Phelps has to be the starting first baseman.

  119. Gayle April 24th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

OK here is a rules question normally when there is an error it is an unearned run BUT because the error is on the pitcher is is still an unearned run or is it earned??

  120. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Please keep giving Phelps a chance, let Dud M be a defensive replacement.

  121. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

I hope Guidry duct tapes Torres arms so he can’t reach the bullpen phone.

  122. VTYanks fan April 24th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

i go to UVM, so I’m in Burlington, but I live in Charlotte, like 20 minutes south of here. I went to high school in the state too.

  123. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

Gayle, I believed it is still unearned.

  124. JCR April 24th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

“Vizcaino and Farnsworth can’t be trusted. And Proctor had a good 1/2 of a single season. I’m not so sure what you’re seeing out of them isn’t what they really are..”

Disagree about Vizcaino Lizzie, the guy has pitched a lot of innings, but his stuff is nasty, agree on Fanrsworth thoug, however, let’s not forget that his fastball is one of the nastiest in the game, let’s wait to see if Guidry can put it to work later in the season

  125. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Ah, cool. I spend some time in Stowe and Morrisville each year with my wife’s family. Dangerous territory for Yankees fans.

  126. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Vizcaino and Farnsworth can’t be trusted. And Proctor had a good 1/2 of a single season. I’m not so sure what you’re seeing out of them isn’t what they really are.

I’m not sure either. That’s why it’s fun to watch. Otherwise following a season would be tantamount to reading 162 box scores after the fact. But given the lack of surety, I am going to pull for them to realize and exceed their potential. This isn’t faith. It’s as rational as your preemptive dismissals and condemnations. But if you think misery fests make you analytic or incisive, then you don’t know that all knowledge is born of wonder.

  127. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

Why is Cairo on this team? He had one nice year for the Yanks a few years ago (still remember that big hit in extra innings vs Boston at the Stadium), but has blown chunks ever since.

  128. VTYanks fan April 24th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

haha, yeah, I know. Yeah, I ski at Stowe. But I was born in New York city so dont’ worry people, i’m legit, my dad’s from Greenwich, CT, tri-state Yankee fan terrtory, so i’m not a front runner….But yes, it is dangerous here, but I wear my gear proudly

I’m liking Phelps more and more. He was two inches away from tying that game Sunday night when Dusty “sucks” Pedroia came outta nowhere to make that play…

  129. Jeff NJ April 24th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

Gonzalez will replace Cairo next year, just another benefit from the Unit trade.

  130. Jeff NJ April 24th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

By the way starting Phelps and then switching in the late innings to Mientkiewicz is the best combination of the two.

  131. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

    Great Wang, just great.

Bad teams will find every which way to lost a ballgame.

  132. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

    lizzie just ‘told us so’

  133. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Oh My God!!! Vizcaino just walked him on 4 pitches!!!

  134. VTYanks fan April 24th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Oh Lizziemcguire, you are killing me. You wanna see a bad team? Look at the Nationals, or the Royals, or the Pirates. Go talk about badness on their blog. I know a blog is for everyone to make comments in an open forum, but sometimes, statements have to be criticized. As John Stuart Mill says, letting them speak is great, because that is the best chance for you dispell their truths as lies. Remember that everyone when lizzie spouts her messages of hate.

    Meanwhile, why Vizcaino?

  135. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

No doubt about your fandom VT, there’s pockets of us distributed throughout the states. Boston fans will razz, but mostly in good fun and humor. They’ve had a fantastic team year in and year out for five years now. C’mon, how much fin is this, er…uh…”rivalry?”

I was a grad student at MIT in ’96, and in December of that year, I just happened to be at Fenway on the day Clemens signed with Toronto. It was like a city-wide funeral.

  136. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

    CAIRO!!!!

    That’s why, Lizzie.

  137. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

    Strummerson, it was intentional.

  138. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

This is a great ballgame right here. Those of you who prefer a 14-0 romp in the second inning miss out on so much.

  139. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

    “Strummerson, it was intentional.”

Yes, my friend. I know. I was making a point about gloomy gus hysteria on this blog.

  140. riderstoned April 24th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

    ohhhhh boy

  141. Michael in Chicago April 24th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

    Oh, crap. Crawford. Oh, Crapford.

  142. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

    Me cago en la p…

  143. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

And yes. That sucks. So let’s pull for a late inning rally.

  144. lizziemcguire April 24th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

“a late inning rally”!!!!!! Who are you freaking kidding?

    FIRE JOE TORRE

  145. JCR April 24th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

“Me cago en la p…” ¿en qué? ¿te cagas en que?

  146. strummerson April 24th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Oh lizzie. Baseball ain’t your game, my friend. Enjoy your righteous outrage. I’ll enjoy watching this game.

  147. Erick April 24th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

    la puta

  148. JCR April 24th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

    yo también… carajo

  149. Steve Lombardi April 24th, 2007 at 10:54 pm

Toward the end of his last season in Seattle, 2000, Rodriguez was telling everyone how much he loved Seattle. He was saying he wanted to stay. He said he thought he could be part of a pennant contender for years to come. And, what happened then?

  150. Gonzo April 25th, 2007 at 12:02 am

Does anyone think it’s funny how everyone (ESPN) thinks that the Red Sox have a shot at Clemens…? Would that not make their payroll higher than us? Would that not mean that they are the “Evil Empire”? The Red Sox will not be getting Clemens, but godamnit we are gonna have a 200 million dollar payroll when we get do.

  151. Mary April 25th, 2007 at 1:18 am

“Toward the end of his last season in Seattle, 2000, Rodriguez was telling everyone how much he loved Seattle. He was saying he wanted to stay. He said he thought he could be part of a pennant contender for years to come. And, what happened then?”

Aaaaah, Steve. We can always count on you with the AROD-bashing. This must have been a rough month for you, with him hitting well and all. How many games did you stop listening to early? “Was watching” – HA!

  152. Tano April 25th, 2007 at 3:17 am

    “And, what happened then?”

Gee, let me try to remember.
Someone offered him 250 million dollars?

Whats your beef with Arod – he should be criticized for not being retarded?

  153. Dimitris May 21st, 2007 at 1:08 pm

    Cool!

  154. Vassilios May 21st, 2007 at 1:13 pm
