Waiting for Phil Franchise

Just got home and I’m listening to Mike Pelfrey of the Mets get crushed by the Rockies. Underscores how difficult it can be for a young pitcher.

I personally like Phil Hughes a lot, he’s a very good kid and I think he has a chance to be terrific for a decade. Hopefully this panic move doesn’t set him back. That said, I can’t wait to watch him pitch.

I’m not covering the game today but my understanding is that he will meet with the media this afternoon. My boy Kevin Devaney is there and I’ll let you know what Hughes said later.

Meanwhile, great news for the blog. We are one of three finalists for Best Media-Affiliated Sports Blog in the annual EPpy Awards contest.

According to the release, the EPpy Awards are sponsored by Editor & Publisher and MediaWeek magazines. EPpy winners will be revealed at the Interactive Newspaper Conference and Trade Show in Miami on May 24. The prestigious awards are now in their 12th year.

The other finalists are Seahawks Insider (The Tacoma News Tribune) and SportsJustice (

I know for a fact that both of those blogs are done by writers using all manner of performance enhancing drugs. So if you’re a judge, you might want to keep that in mind. Here at the LoHud Yankees Blog headquarters, it’s only Diet Coke and an occasional vodka and Red Bull.

Seriously, it’s cool just to get nominated and thanks to all of you for reading, contributing and giving me ideas about what to blog about. It has been fun and hopefully it reads that way.
