A few thoughts as we wait for first pitch …
The rainout yesterday was welcomed by Derek Jeter after getting drilled in the leg by that Scott Kazmir 91-mph fastball on Tuesday.
Jeter is so predictable after such events, refusing to even acknowledge the injury. Just his standard, “No big deal.” It’s a smart move. The more an athlete talks about injuries, the more questions he gets.
Phil Hughes aside, the Yankees need Mike Mussina to get through his rehab start tomorrow night in good shape. Inning-eaters like Chien-Ming Wang and the Moose are what this team needs most right now.
Jayson Stark of ESPN writes that A-Rod almost certainly will opt out.
Now before you get all “ESPN hates the Yankees,” he does have a point. Alex’s value will never be higher and he does have Scott Boras as his agent.
The question is whether the Yankees extend his deal or let him go into the market. Or whether Alex stands up and says he wants to stay and the heck with the option.
It’s a topic that will never go away and there are assorted Boras minions in the media who will bang the drum for him. Meanwhile just enjoy watching the guy play. 2008 will get here when it gets here.
I just did a radio spot with Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus. If you aren’t reading BP, you really should be. The quality of the writing and reporting on the site has gone up tremendously in the last 18 months. It’s not “just” a stats site any more.
Anybody see the The Fratellis on Letterman last night? I feel asleep. But the songs on iTunes sound good.
