Hughes settling in nicely

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 26, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Phil Hughes threw 27 pitches in the first inning. 28 in the next two. That’s what he has to do, work ahead and stay there.

He has retired eight of the last nine batters he has faced.

The biggest problem for Hughes tonight will be facing A.J. Burnett, who really has his secondary pitches working.

That picture would be me. : )

  3. SJ44 April 26th, 2007 at 8:10 pm

When AJ can throw his change and curve for strikes, he is downright nasty.

Just gotta work counts, up his pitchcount, and try to pounce on a mistake.

  4. Bob Merc April 26th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

Pete…I’m happy to say I got my media pass for PNC Feild…I hope I never get to interview Phil…I hope he does well…and I didn’t forget…you and I have an interview to do. http://www.tpsradio.net The Shift Shameless promotion!!! LOL

  5. Russell April 26th, 2007 at 8:15 pm

I like the movement on Hughes’ fastball… or is that just a lack of control? lol

  6. Go NYR April 26th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

I think Jorgie wanted a curve there

  7. Go NYR April 26th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

A double play would be nice here

  8. Russell April 26th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

    Andrew… nice pic with Hughes!

  9. Cumberberg April 26th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Is Hughes on a pitch count?

  10. Go NYR April 26th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

    time for some runs

  11. KMT April 26th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

What’s his pitch limit for the night? I just missed Sterling said that Guidry is aware of it and he mentioned the number but I missed it.

  12. hello?offense? April 26th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

That Yankee offense is just too dominant for words.

  13. Rudy April 26th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

hes at 75 pitches vi believe and the most hes ever thrown in a game was 89 so hes near his limit you would have to think

  14. jay April 26th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Michael Kay just said Hughes’ pitchcount is almost at his limit and that the 5th would probably be his last inning. I agree that Hughes should be monitered but it doesn’t make sense to me why the Yankees would call him up now if they new he could only go 5 innings. Wasn’t the whole point of finding a new starter to get some relief for the bullpen? Why not call someone up (even if they’re not as good as Hughes) who can at least give you innings?

  15. SJ44 April 26th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

After 3 innings you are trashing the offense? Good call, great baseball smarts.

  16. Rudy April 26th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

    damn just missed it

  17. KMT April 26th, 2007 at 8:27 pm

    ARGH!

John Sterling has to stop calling ‘em out before they’re out.

    - KMT

  18. the lopper April 26th, 2007 at 8:28 pm

well well well. look whos back ? gameday had that flyball by arod marked over the fence. ha. how much did he miss it by ?

  19. YankeeJosh April 26th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

    jay

No one else can give more innings than Hughes. Wright, Ohlendorf, Clippard etc all would probably only be able to go about 5. At least from Phil we’re getting a quality 5.

  20. nathan April 26th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

i would have never guessed that some of the Boston trolls wud be as dumb as ‘h?o?’… its beyond pathetic.. so bad.. its like watching David Ortiz leg a double.. F.U.N.N.Y

  21. SJ44 April 26th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

They didn’t know how many pitches he could throw prior to calling him up. If his pitch count is 85-90 pitches, why would one assume he would only pitch 5 innings.

The long first inning hurt him tonight. Aside from that, he has pitched quite well.

Sure as hell has pitched better than the other scrubs they have put out there for most of the season and he doesn’t even know what he is doing yet.

IMO, he deserves another start after this performance.

  22. rookiepitcher April 26th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

why does john sterling have to apologize and expvain why the arod hit would have been a home run. there is something repugnant in the way he is flattering. sort of makes me sick. going on and on. five times.

  23. hello?offense? April 26th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

“After 3 innings you are trashing the offense? Good call, great baseball smarts.”

We’ll see. Bad teams lose low scoring close games. Heh, bad teams lose games all sorts of ways and NY is doing just that.

  24. KMT April 26th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

It must have been close because Sterling went into his “it is High, it is Far, it is…caught at the wall.”

Speedy Giambi just got nailed trying to stretch a single to a double.

Sterling said he should have gone…Waldman says, “no, he’s too slow.” LOL

    - KMT

  25. hello?offense? April 26th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

ooooh, this offense is so good it’s scary! LOL!

Another day, another big fat loss.

  26. jay April 26th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

I think some of the other pitchers definitely could have gone longer than Hughes, especially since the Yankees aren’t as worried about there “progress” and not overworking them. I’m not questioning Hughes’ performance at all, I think he’s been great after that first inning. But 85 pitches is usually about 5 innings unless you are lights out. A rookie coming up is probably at least going to have a few innings when he throws a lot of pitches, even if he has a good game.

  27. Chris NJ April 26th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

SJ44, he absolutely deserves another start. He’s on a pitch count and yet pitching innings, and not only that but more quality innings then several of the guys the Yankees threw out there. He actually has potential too! Hah.

But seriously. He will get another start. Now he hasn’t been spectacular today, but his fastball has shown some life, his curveball has shown some drop, and his changeup has shown to be effective too.

  28. paul April 26th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

we have to find a way to win this game with boston coming into town, it could be 9 in a row real quick if we don’t

  29. Andrew April 26th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

Why does Adam Loewen completely fold to Boston but dominates the Yankees? It’s just not fair.

  30. rookiepitcher April 26th, 2007 at 8:35 pm

sterling is good for the home run call and the yankees win call. other than that, he is ruining susan waldman, who has to suck up to his elderly status.

sometimes, as much as i love the yankees, i have to turn off the radio, after really feeling sick from sterling’s inane comments.

  31. Bob Merc April 26th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

The kid is a keeper…for sure!

  32. larocny April 26th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Who is this guy? (hellooffense) You must not know much about baseball or you would know that the yankees are among the league leaders in runs scored. ha

  33. SJ44 April 26th, 2007 at 8:37 pm

Yeah, if they don’t score a lot of runs tonight, that makes them a “bad” offense. Ok, whatever.

I agree about Hughes. Honestly, he is pitching better than I thought he would, given his lack of experience.

One thing is clear. His stuff alone is better than anybody they have in the rotation with the exception of Wang. The ball just explodes out of his hands.

He’s inexperienced, and he clearly doesn’t know the hitters yet.

I realize its early but, I would gladly take him through a couple of more turns in the rotation. He is better than Igawa, that’s for damn sure.

Blown call by Bill Miller, one of the worst umpires in the game. A brutally bad call.

  34. Bob Merc April 26th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

He has it alot tougher than Pettite did as a rookie coming up.

  35. Erick April 26th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

SJ44 include Petite in the exceptions

  36. Chris NJ April 26th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Posada has been terrible today with the throwing to 2nd. He would have gotten Rios if he could get a grip on the ball, and he would have gotten McDonal out if he didn’t throw it high.

  37. Andrew April 26th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Ouch. Loewen gives Boston bases loaded, no outs, and they get 1 run off of it.

Meanwhile, everything is going JUST wrong for the Yankees. Is it Henn up in the bullpen?

  38. SJ44 April 26th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Hughes has better stuff than Pettitte. Andy is a better pitcher. But, in terms of pure stuff, Hughes has better stuff.

Bill Miller’s blown call cost them a run. He is one of the worst umpires in the game. Figures, in the midst of a losing steak, they get stuck with him tonight.

  39. rookiepitcher April 26th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

ok. finally good news. about hughes. i’m excited. they are taking him out after this inning but he has not gone over 89 pitches in the minors either…

  40. A-Rod for Prez April 26th, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Cairo costs us more runs because he is slow and terrible. HURRY BACK JETER!!!

  41. larocny April 26th, 2007 at 8:43 pm

This kid is definately going to be nasty!! Nice K!!!!

  42. larocny April 26th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

They were chanting hughes right?? Sounded like they were booing…

I hope no one would ever boo him…..

  43. jay April 26th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

I think Hughes deserves another start too but if they keep his pitch count this low to protect his arm it doesn’t really make much sense for the bullpen.

  44. the lopper April 26th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

its nice to have a strikeout pitcher … haven’t had once since clememns. hughes deserves atleast one more start. who knows. maybe he deserves to be up the rest of the year.

  45. jennifer April 26th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

larocny they were not booing. They were saying HUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHHHEEEEEESSSS
