One more inning for Hughes?

Peter Abraham
April
26

I have Hughes at 75 pitches. He has not gone over 89 this season, so I suspect the fifth inning will be it for him.

He has pitched very well outside of the first inning. He needs to throw a few more strikes early in the count but that will come.

Meanwhile, Barney Rubble Giambi can’t be going to second there. Just stay at first and let Matsui hit a homer.

I can’t believe Giambi ever goes for 2. He gets too winded just going to 1st.

  2. Jamie

anyone else get a good laugh when they see giambi running hard, let alone diving head first. i am still laughing at it.

  3. randy l

now we know why torre pinch runs for giambi.station to station. trying to do too much.

  4. Justin

Hey Pete, whats the atmosphere like at the stadium when Phil’s on the mound? Seems a little subdued on tv. Any thoughts?

  5. Gonzo

I’d be laughing if he wasnt out. Hughes is getting robbed on some pitches and in the 5th hes gone.

  6. Gonzo

Hughes is at 77 on gamecast btw.

  7. Billy Mo

I don’t have a problem with Giambi going for 2nd right there. It’s still early in the game and you are only down by 2. He was trying to get into scoring position against a guy who is pitching well. Absolutely no problem be me since he ran hard right out of the box and it took a near perfect throw to get him. That’s hustle you like to see.

  8. Jennifer

I have a problem with these umps. Mcdonald was OUT!! Called him safe, cost us a run!

  9. randy l

get hughes out of there. if they wouldn’t go over 90 pitches at triple aaa, they shouldn’t here.

  10. TK

I am stuck watching the game on gamecast, it seems like he is falling behind every hitter in this inning, does he look gassed?

  11. Gonzo

90 PITCHES — AFTER THAT BALL TO WELLS, TAKE HIM OUT.

  12. jennifer

Phil is done. did a nice job. crowd gave him a nice ovation, and the HUUUUGGGGHHHHHHHHEEESSS calls.

Think he’ll get another start? First inning killed him on his pitch count, and I also think if he has a run or two to work with he would have had an easier time.

  13. nathan

    TOO conservative

  14. Alfred

Lol, it’s just comical to watch Giambi run.

Hughes did a great job by the way.

  15. TK

I agree that they are being to conservative. I understand that he is 20 and you want to keep him on a strict pitch count, thats fine, but then dont bring him up to pitch this game. They are in the bullpen again and we are only in the 5th. I cant see how letting the kid finish this inning could damage him. But i am certainly not a pitching coach.

  16. Max Cooper

    what was his velocity like?

  17. Chris

The most refreshing thing about Hughes was seeing a Yankee pitcher throw stuff the hitters actually swing thru. It feels like it’s been a long time since we’ve had that.

  18. Jeremy

Hughes did fine under the circumstances, which begs the question – why bring him up at all?

By the way, can you believe the drunks, I mean fans, giving Hughes a standing ovation? I’d like to see what they’d do if Hughes gave us a quality start. (sarcasm/dig at Pete)

  19. Mr. Faded Glory

Jeremy, no Yankee can get a quality start anymore because Torre won’t let anyone throw 5 innings

  20. Reno

They weren’t saying HUUUUGGGGHHHHHHHHEEESSS, they were saying P-HUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEE

  21. larocny

we NEED a win!!!! Let’s go YANKEES!!!!

  22. SJ44

They were correct in taking him out and he will get another start. His stuff is too good not to start.

You don’t push him tonight on a nasty night. That would be dumb, even for Joe Torre.

Another mixup at short and second and nobody covering.

This team is a trainwreck right now.

Again night, the team comes out unprepared.

You are on borrowed time Joe Torre. You better win this weekend, or you won’t be going to Texas.

You can’t have this team this unprepared and lose every night. Its embarrassing after awhile.

The best manager for this team is sitting in the YES booth. Time to get him on the field, ASAP.

  23. CGramazio

I think the kid did a great job. I think he should stay, let the Yankees get his major league career underway.

  24. YanksFanLV

I just flipped the game on in gamecast, and by reading comments looks like Phil Franchise didn’t do half bad, the worst part is that the lineup couldn’t give him any run support. Just saw the highlights of the Angels D-Rays, Colon is back in a big way.

  25. larocny

Love to think about June and

    Wang
    Clemens
    Pettite
    Mussina
    Hughes

    That would be NASTY!!!

    Let’s go offense!!!!!!

  26. Gonzo

If Joe Torre leaves or was not here this year, you could forget about having Pettitte right now and even getting the rocket. It’s not his fault Jeter got HBP and couldnt play today. If the best manager for this team is sitting in the YES booth, I would tell you that there is a reason that he is there and not coaching.

  27. Paul Calta

Mientiwicz batting second, Cano at bottom of order. Give me a break!

  28. murphydog

Sorry Philomaniacs – he’s not quite ready. I liked what I saw from the kid. But, he only went 4 and one third innings and is charged with 4 runs and seven hits. It was an admirable beginning for a 20 year old, however, now we must beat that dead horse of a bullpen again.

  29. nathan

YanksFanLV.. COlon.. back.. quick set up a game with the Angels.. we can win that one for sure..

i wud actually prefer Girardi over Donnie baseball.. JG might change things around a bit.. i think Donnie is Torre lite..

and i am too concerned whether Torre is this BAD this season because of Donnie in his ears..

  30. Chipper

by June, we’ll out by 20+ games at this rate.

    My predictions earlier.

    Hughes’ Line:
    IP 4.1
    H 7
    R 5
    ER 4
    BB 4
    K 2
    HR 1

    Yanks lose 8 to 4.

  31. Stuart

I live in Cali. I have XM and the baseball package. anyway had to listen to Sterling on the way home, he really is not too good of a announcer. thought the Giambi play was not a bad idea, waldman disagreed. also susan said mcdonald was out sterling is the diplomat, maybe he can work for the UN..

  32. NYDAVE

Nobody seems to mention that call at first base to start the inning. He was out by 2 feet. That run went on to score, and could have compeletely changed the inning.

I thought Hughes’s stuff looked real good, and I hope he gets another start, because he could really be something. Without that first inning, the whole game could have been different for him, and he was probably nervous.

I don’t understand why so many haters right on these pages. If you hate the yankees, and all of their moves, then why do you waste your time commenting on every blog post on this page. Don’t you have better things to do.

  33. Cheng

Hughes’ line tonight, doesn’t mean much to me.
I’m worrying about the arm strength.
if they keep him here, It might kill his arm.

  34. Gonzo

What makes you think Clemens will be behind The Wanger larocny?

  35. Chicago Dave

It would be nice to see the offense wake up…Maybe it’s the weather? Burnett is not this good.

  36. YanksFanLV

Joe probably decided that they needed a little pop at the back of the lineup. Mientkiewicz’s defense isn’t worth his lack of offense.

  37. Stuart

people cut cano alot of slack check him out with men on base. when man are on base he is not as good of a hitter. he is incredibly impatient..

  38. YanksFanLV

NYDave, I don’t think there are many “haters” here, just a lot of frustrated fans.

  39. murphydog

    SJ:

“You are on borrowed time Joe Torre. You better win this weekend, or you won’t be going to Texas.”

You’re not planning to take matters into your own hands are you, SJ? I mean, don’t we gotta get permission? I don’t think we can just whack Torre without getting permission – - you know, talk to Tony. Tony Soprano. Look, just scare the guy, OK? Don’t hurt him….

  40. Peter Abraham

    SJ44:

How is a baseball team unprepared and how can you tell that? This isn’t football or basketball where there is a team concept to offense and defense. This is an individial sport. Each player prepares himself. Is Joe supposed to give the Knute Rockne speech every day and say “Oh by the way, look out for delayed steals?”

Their starting pitching stinks. Once it gets better, they will start to win. Joe Girardi can’t change that.

  41. larocny

have to leave this blog now. You guys are DEPRESSING!!!!

    Have good night fans!!

    Go YANKEES!!!!!

  42. randy l

“he will get another start. His stuff is too good not to start.”
hate to tell you,4 runs in 4 and1/3 inning is not good. hughes should go back to scranton and develop at his own pace. he doesn’t need to be in a pressure cooker of the mess they are in right now.that isn’t going to help him. the yankees have plenty of guys who can have an almost 9.00 era and can go further in the game. your buddy igawa can do that.
agree with you that this team is a train wreck right now. if it can go wrong it will go wrong. it’s no place for raw rookies right now. the veterans on this team have to get together and put a stop to this.

  43. Paul Calta

I was done with Mientiwicz when he left seven men on base in the Oakland game.

Do you guys think that whacking Torre is the solution? It may be a little extreme but…..

  44. randy l

the yankees have got to get burnett out of this game.

  45. YanksFanLV

I don’t think any manager would be winning with the state of our starting rotation.

  46. murphydog

    Pete:

“The fallacy of Invincible Ignorance mimics the consistency that comes from having a well-thought-out position. However it asks us to overlook the distinction between rational consistency and sheer stubbornness.”

I grabbed the above from some academic website.

We have a lot of folks posting here who suffer from this particular problem. The difficulty with curing these folks is that no matter what you say, how rational and correct you are, these folks remain unswayed because giving in to another person’s logic is a sign of weakness. I have a large number of immediate relatives (and one ex-wife) who suffer from this very thing. We should start a foundation to fight this.

  47. SJ44

Three things show me the team is unprepared.

    1. Jeter’s range at short is not what it used to be. Instead of playing him closer to the middle, and ARod a bit more off the line, they don’t. They continue to play Jeter as if its the 1998 version of Jeter and that hurts their defense. For a pitching staff that pitches to contact, its amazing to me they haven’t made that adjustment.

    2. Minky batting second tonight. Another example of being unprepared. I would think, with a rookie pitcher on the mound, the idea would be to make the lineup a bit more top heavy (Cano?), or give you more options (Cairo), than putting a guy hitting .156 in the lineup. That moves simply makes no sense.

    3. What I call, the “Torre Substitution Patterns”. He did it Friday night in Boston and he did it the other night in Tampa. Premature substitutions and it cost them both games. Again, not learning from your mistakes. Another sign of being unprepared.

Their starting pitching is problematic. No question about it, Pete. But, equally problematic is the inconsistency Joe has had this year with who he has used in the bullpen, as well as the above examples. Let’s face it. Mixing and matching is no longer Joe’s forte.

Sometimes, a team just gets too comfortable with a manager. That seems to be the case with this team right now. Hey, I hope the guy can get things going.

But, if they continue to lose, it gets tougher and tougher to keep him, especially since we all know he isn’t going to be back next year.

If its going to be a “rebuilding year”, whether its because of injuries, ineffectiveness or its just plain time, better to do it with the guy who is going to be here next year than the guy who isn’t.

One last thing on the subject. Tonight’s loss doesn’t bother me. Tonight, is what I call a “baseball loss”. Burnett has pitched great and that’s the way it goes some nights.

My big issues are the games (5 already this year) that the Yankees had 3 run leads or greater and fundamental missteps by Joe cost them (at minimum) 3 of those wins and the way he has misused the bullpen to the point of ineffectiveness this year.

He isn’t the first manager that has had to deal with injuries. He has just done a very poor job dealing with them.

That’s as much a reason as to why they are in last place right now as anything else happening with the team, IMO.
