good to see Jeter is back in the lineup and batting 2nd instead of Minky lol.

  2. YankeesLuv April 27th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

I wonder if the weather will hold up. Nice to see Jetes back in the lineup. The record for most homeruns in April is 14, but there has been two rain outs, does that factor in for Arod or no?

  3. Fred Vincy April 27th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

Except for Minky, this is the A team.

  4. Marc April 27th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

    What about Phelps??!

  5. Justin April 27th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

Mientkiewicz 0-3 with 2Ks, calling it right now.

  6. Scottâ„¢ April 27th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

    No more MANSANDWICH!!!

  7. Chris NY April 27th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Wow Justin, really going out on a limb with that prediction……

I predict that if it rains……, the field will get wet.

  8. Jeff NJ April 27th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Minky just needs more at bats in the 2 spot to get comfortable, maybe we should ease Jeter back into the lineup batting ninth. He should be batting before Damon anyway.

Part of me is praying for rain, one because the Yankees could use the day off and two I have tix for tomorrow and would much rather see Pettitte than Karstens.

  9. Marc April 27th, 2007 at 3:51 pm

Not if the tarp is on!

  10. Zachary April 27th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Mientkiewicz will hit a grand slam tonight… :)

  11. Justin April 27th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

Zachary please email me your paypal address, if Mientkiewicz hits a grand slam I will paypal you $2.50 per RBI, or $10- your choice!

  12. Fernando Alejandro April 27th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

I’m calling it now, A-Rod hits two homeruns off Matsuzaka. Matsuzaka cries in the dug out. Fans throw fake bloody socks on the field, and Jeter makes an amazing play to his left to save Pettitte’s perfect game.

  13. harley April 27th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Entrepreneurial alert. Sell faux fake bloody socks to willing Yankee fans. Start new, if somewhat dubious, tradition in order to taunt Red Light Curt. Wave those socks!

  14. Drive 4-5 April 27th, 2007 at 4:01 pm

Jeff NJ – I’m with you. I’d like to see a washout of tonight’s game too. I have tix for tomorrows game and would love to be there when Andy pulls us out of the hole.

  15. Fernando Alejandro April 27th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

The more rainouts there are the less chance A-Rod has of breaking that single month homerun/RBI record. I’d prefer they play tonight and every other game they’re suppose to through the end of the month.

  16. Gonzo April 27th, 2007 at 4:07 pm

Mientkiewicz! Why does Joe torture me this way? Who did I kill in my past life to deserve this… Mientkiewicz… NIGHTMARE!?

  17. David April 27th, 2007 at 4:08 pm

Phelps needs to play every day. I guess he hits too well for Joe.

  18. Gonzo April 27th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

“With age creeping up on George Steinbrenner and his team’s succession plans seeming unsettled, it was only a matter of time before someone surfaced with interest in buying the Yankees. And the first new name to be heard in quite awhile is an old name: the Dolans, owners of Madison Square Garden, the Knicks, Rangers and cable-TV behemoth Cablevision.” -SI.com

GOD NO! NO! THATS WORSE THAN MIENTKIEWICZ!!!!!!!

  19. Jeremy April 27th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

    Fernando Alejandro,

Just a no-hitter for Pettitte (1 walk to Manny in 2nd). Let’s be realistic here.

  20. Jeff NJ April 27th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Forget A Rod’s April record, I’m hoping he breaks May thru Oct records.

  21. Global Warming(PTS) April 27th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

I don’t want a rainout today. Not because A-Rod has one less game to break a petty record but because the Sox will have the ability to push Taverez back a day and avoid facing the Yankees.

  22. Jeremy April 27th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Gonzo cracks me up. He sounds like the voice in my head!

  23. Fernando Alejandro April 27th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

Let’s agree that he pegs Manny instead.

  24. scott April 27th, 2007 at 4:14 pm

Have you seen some of the plays Dougie has made at 1B? Unless there is a left-hander on the mound, I want Dougie in the lineup and stationed at 1B. We need all the help we can get preventing runs out there.

  25. kevin April 27th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

what’s the best way to find out if the game is called or not?

  26. saucy April 27th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

“Minky just needs more at bats in the 2 spot to get comfortable, maybe we should ease Jeter back into the lineup batting ninth. He should be batting before Damon anyway. ”

    i hope this was sarcasm.

  27. Global Warming(PTS) April 27th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

Doug M is an automatic out. Get him out please.

  28. Stephen April 27th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

I’m not sure how this April-home-run-record became such a huge story. It’s a one-year-old record! Most in any month would be a big deal. Most in the post-season, sure. But most in April? Not something that’ll go on a Cooperstown plaque.

I’d rather him NOT break this record, and instead hit walk-offs and go-ahead dingers for the rest of the season.

  29. Jeff NJ April 27th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Yes it was sarcasm, guess I should’ve made that clearer.

  30. Jeremy April 27th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Mientkiewicz has such a hard-nosed approach to baseball that he improves the ability of the batters directly before and after him. That’s why batting him ninth is a waste – there is no one who bats tenth.

  31. saucy April 27th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

especially since they haven’t always played for the full month of april

  32. eric April 27th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

If Jim Dolan has anything to do with the Yankees I will become a Met fan.

  33. saucy April 27th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

thankfully, i don’t think george’s kids are looking to sell…

  34. Global Warming(PTS) April 27th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

I wish the Maras were looking to buy the Yankees…….not the Dolans.

  35. Kat April 27th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

I’m all for Andy tomorrow too!!!!! I really like the entrepreneurs here – love the faux bloody sock idea!!!

  36. Jamie April 27th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

Gonzo, thanks for bringing up yet another reason why I will be blacked out tonight if the Yanks lose again.

  37. randy l April 27th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

why wouldn’t pena be in center against pettitte? but good. the guy can hit.

  38. nathan April 27th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

DOLANS… oh no.. no freakin way..

  39. Annie Savoy April 27th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Not to worry, the Yankees will be in the Steinbrenner family for years to come. Do you really believe SI has any idea what they are talking about? They’re worse than ESPN.

  40. Whatever April 27th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

Playing tonight will keep DMat on the “less rest than he was used to in Japan” schedule.

I’ve watched everyone of Matsuzaka’s starts and while he is deceptive and gets a lot of Ks, he gave up a lot of hard hit balls in every one of them, and is lucky his ERA is only 4.00.

After getting cuffed around last Sunday night by the Yanks, DMat said that won’t happen again tonight. Well, we’ll see. A good thrashing of Boston’s overhyped hotshot would do wonders for my current bad mood regarding the Yanks.

  41. saucy April 27th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

    Wily Mo Pena:

If your middle name was “Mo”, why on earth would you use it?

  42. Fernando Alejandro April 27th, 2007 at 4:27 pm

Speaking of which does anyone know what the single month homerun record is?

  43. saucy April 27th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

i think either Sosa or Bonds has it. Not sure of the number.

  44. Jeremy April 27th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Sosa set it in June 1998. 20 dingers.

  45. Global Warming(PTS) April 27th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

    20 by Sosa of 98.

  46. Doreen April 27th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

Sammy Sosa, June 1998, 20 HRs.

  47. Gonzo April 27th, 2007 at 4:36 pm

Maybe he will just buy the YES network, so who knows? Maybe I wont have to throw myself out of a window after all…

  48. Stephen April 27th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

    Re: Rainouts.

The first places I’ve heard about rainouts is either on this blog or on WFAN. Mike/Chris usually mention if they get word, but it would definitely be mentioned on the 20/20 updates.

  49. BWH April 27th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

I think that the Yanks have Daisuke’s number – I think they’re going to tag him tonight. And Dougie M. will have a hit tonight and/or RBI.

At least one good thing about Petite starting tonight is that we know Torre won’t put him in from the bullpen!

  50. Gonzo April 27th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

BWH, you lost me at Dougie M. will have a hit tonight and/or RBI.

  51. Rey22 April 27th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

Wow, that bloody sock idea is very damn kickass. I’d love to see it happen.

  52. Enoch April 27th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

Mientkiewicz got a double of Matsusaka, so now he will play every inning of every game he pitches.

  53. Jonathan C. April 27th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

“why wouldn’t pena be in center against pettitte? but good. the guy can hit.”

    Isn’t he hitting like .170?

  54. ByeByeBalboni April 27th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH……….mientkiewicz is playing. why why why?

  55. BLACKACCORD April 27th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

    Enoch

Just like Enrique wilson used to play whenever pedro was pitching right?? :)

btw, i miss enrique and his hustles…:))

  56. Russell April 27th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

I don’t think they’re going to get this game in. Forecast had rain till 1 in the morning last time I checked.

  57. Gonzo April 27th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

I want SNAKE EYES for DICE-K.

  58. Jake April 27th, 2007 at 4:58 pm

Has anyone realized how Kevin Youkilis looks like he has down syndrome?

Just thought I’d point that out, not to be insensitive.

  59. chazzh April 27th, 2007 at 4:58 pm

you can get away with playing Wily Mo in Fenway- but not in spacious Yankee Stadium (he is a butcher in the field).

Lay off Minky- he isn’t the problem- if the Yanks were winning- it wouldn’t matter if he was hitting 170. Also- with the bats in the Yanks lineup – we don’t need him to hit.

  60. Matt April 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

Scott, Mientkiewicz does prevent a lot of runs. For us.

  61. pat April 27th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

WHAT?! NO PREGAME CHATTER?! I thought maybe Joel Pinero was gonna talk a ton of smack agan and then sit the bench the whole series…

  62. Gonzo April 27th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

    ByeByeBalboni, welcome to our nightmare.

  63. randy l April 27th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

” A good thrashing of Boston’s overhyped hotshot would do wonders for my current bad mood regarding the Yanks.”
the beauty of baseball is everyday there is an opportunity to make something good happen. if the yankees beat matsuzaka convincingly, it would stop the bleeding.
of all the pitchers the yankees have , pettitte is the one i’d want out here for this kind of game.
the yankees need this game. if any april game can be a must win game, this is it.

  64. randy l April 27th, 2007 at 5:03 pm

    ” Isn’t he hitting like .170?’
think you missed the grand slam last night that won the game.

  65. Paul9 April 27th, 2007 at 5:07 pm

is it raining in the city

  66. Gonzo April 27th, 2007 at 5:07 pm

It was not a no doubter though randy, even he was surprised he did that ****.

  67. Zachary April 27th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

It’s not raining now in the Stadium:

    http://www.weather.com/outlook.....l/36410:20

But there’s a 30-40″ chance of rain during the game… almost the same as last night.

    http://www.weather.com/outlook.....tid=211461

  68. Anthony April 27th, 2007 at 5:31 pm

Does anybody really give a crap about the home run record for April? Let’s just win the damn game!!

  69. Girardi April 27th, 2007 at 5:33 pm

9 game losing streak. Seriously embarrassed on our home turf. Bet on it.

I can’t even hope that I’m wrong, because every day a part of me grows larger that hopes they lose every single game until Gump is axed. For several years now there has been no hope of a Championship with Gump driving, but still I let myself get excited about the season and beating Boston. Honestly, that’s not even fun any more. And this year it might not even happen. I’m willing to sit out a massive losing streak and see how long it takes Cashman to lose his hard-on for Old Cluelees.

  70. mel April 27th, 2007 at 5:35 pm

wunderground.com has a good weather radar, just put bronx, ny and it’ll come up.

  71. Dave April 27th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Moose pitched a simulated game today and is slated to start next week against Texas ( I think they said Thurs.) Hughes will definitely make a second start in Texas.

    - Mike and Dog

So potentiall after this series the rotation will be Wang, Pettitte, Moose, Hughes and Karstens/Igawa/Rasner until someone gets injured.

  72. Anthony April 27th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

Who gives a crap about an April home run record? I don’t care about any single month home run record. Let’s just see the team win, until that happens I could really care less about any of these dumb individual stats and awards.

  73. Andrew April 27th, 2007 at 5:42 pm

Girardi, if you actually look at the teams managed from 2004 to 2006, you’ll see that they massively surpassed what they were supposed to do, considering the pitching situation.

In 2004, the Yankees should not have even made the playoffs, their pitching was so bad. The run differential made it so that their expected win total was 89. They won 101 games that season, and went to GAME 7 (after they got to ball to God in game 4) against a vastly, vastly superior Boston team.

Torre deserves a lot of credit for those years and coaxing wins out of those horrid pitching staffs. However, this year he is showing every flaw possible, and his leash should be considerably shorter.

  74. randy l April 27th, 2007 at 5:42 pm

‘Does anybody really give a crap about the home run record for April? Let’s just win the damn game’
    second that !!!

  75. SJ44 April 27th, 2007 at 5:45 pm

    Minky batting ninth: no problem.

    Minky batting second: BIG problem.

Hopefully, that’s one mistake Joe doesn’t make again.

Anyone else a bit troubled that he used his two lefty relievers (Henn and Myers) for two innings each last night?

Makes me wonder who pitches to Ortiz and/or Drew tonight and if they will be fresh.

The problem with Hughes being in the rotation is, as talented as he may be, he doesn’t solve their biggest issue with the starters. He can’t pitch deep into games.

Do they really need another 5 inning starter right now?

Would be different if they had 4 guys you knew could eat innings. If they did, and they wanted to work Hughes in, I could follow that logic.

But, if he is only a 5 inning pitcher, why not have him back in Scranton building arm strength and his pitch counts?

  76. Anthony April 27th, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Girardi, are you really willing to wish bad upon the team in order to see Joe Torre be fired? What did that guy ever do to you except win four championships? I wish he has success. If it doesn’t happen, then yes, perhaps he should be fired, but it’s not something I look forward to, if it was to happen it would be an unfortunate necessity.

  77. Zander April 27th, 2007 at 5:47 pm

    Global Warming:
I love your idea of the Maras buying the NYY! BTW, could you ease up on the polar bears?

    Jake:
Youkilis not handsome – that’s cold. But it’s true he’s not exactly Tyrone Power.

I, for one, have NOT hit the panic button. Mientky will hit .170 or .180 by July 31, easy. Cairo and Nieves will get a hit someday (OK, maybe not both). Pavano will win 15 games – his buttocks are good. The Igman will dominate at Scranton. Farnsworth is our future closer; very reliable. Mo is still Mo – OK, he’s throwing 88 mph at age 37, but he’s still MO, dammit. I love Myers, although we need to use him once a month vs. one batter (but not with the bases loaded). On Groundhog Day, Joe will emerge from his hibernation and lead us to victory !

  78. SJ44 April 27th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

You can never successfully spin a “good managerial job” in 2004 when they blew a 3-0 lead in the ALCS.

You can play the run differential game all you want. You blow a 3-0 lead in the ALCS, and make the kind of strategic mistakes that were made in that series, nobody is buying that is an expected result.

With Hughes pitching Tuesday in Texas, it looks like the rotation is set up to look like this: Hughes, Pettitte, and Moose in Texas, with Wang opening the series in Seattle.

Hopefully, Wang and Moose can hit the ground running. They really need the help in that rotation right now.

  79. randy l April 27th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

“Anyone else a bit troubled that he used his two lefty relievers (Henn and Myers) for two innings each last night?”
i wasn’t because i was so po’d at so many other things, but thanks for reminding me. good point.

  80. YankeesLuv April 27th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

Exactly if Dolans buy the Yankees, I might have to put baseball to the side. It would be hard for me to root for another team. Dolan would probaly hire Isiah Thomas as Yankees GM and give him a life long contract.

  81. Rocco April 27th, 2007 at 6:04 pm

Phelps is so much better bat… hmmm

  82. Jake April 27th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

    Pete,
I dont like how this guy takes my name here and tries to be “me”.

    Classless.

  83. murphydog April 27th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

    SJ:

How do you feel about Joe as a strategic, in-game manager? No, seriously.

SJ, do you sleep – are there dark circles under your eyes? Do you cut yourself like Princess DI used to? Do have old newspapers three feet deep in your bedroom? Do you have like a thousand cats crawling around your place? Can you look strangers in the eye? Do you watch Taxi Driver over and over again and root for Travis Bickle?

Dude: The Joe Torre horse is officially dead. For the love of GOD, SJ, I’m beggin’ you, man. STOP…. BEATING…. IT!

  84. syracuseyankee April 27th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

Phil Hughes isn’t really a five inning pitcher, it just so happens that his pitch count was reached in the fifth last night.

I know the Yankees indicated he’d be on a 180 inning limit this year as they gradually increase his workload, but in the majors, that will happen naturally – as he’s going to get knocked around a few times if he stays in the majors. Just part of the learning process. He’ll struggle to get through 5 or 6 at times, and at other times, he’ll breeze through 7.

But let’s be honest – if Hughes isn’t going to pitch those games because he’s not an “innings eater”, who is? Karstens? Rasner? They’re not going to throw any more innings in the big leagues than Hughes would. Igawa, at this point, isn’t going to either.

If Hughes had pitched 5 full innings last night on 70 pitches, he would have gone back out there to start the sixth. If he had a really quick 6th, he would have started the 7th. Otherwise, they’d have taken him out after six.

But again, who is going to “eat innings” for this team other than Wang, Pettitte, and Mussina? I suppose there is always hope that Pavano will come back and pitch as he did in Minnesota in his second start, but even if that happened, that’s only 4 starters.

Hughes simply has better stuff than all the other options. And if Mussina, Pettitte, and Wang pitch the amount of innings they’re supposed to pitch, you don’t really expect your 4 and 5 starters to go 7 innings a game anyway.

  85. Big Johnson April 27th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

I have no problem with the anti Joe Torre ranting. The guy is doing a horrendous job, and this seems like a perfectly reasonable forum to vent. Please don’t discourage others from rightfully pointing out his glaring managerial flaws.

Friday night was quite possibly the worst managed game ever, in the history of all sports. Including little league and pepper. There was grounds for dismissal right then and there.

Like many others, I cant get past weaver and 04. Torre’s success was apparently a function of who was sitting next to him on the bench.

I personally would like to see the yanks get swepped this weekend. It seems this would be the only reasonable way Torre might get fired. There is no way they can win another playoff series with him, regardless of talent.

I was really hoping Lou would have been here by now, but girardi would more than suffice.

George, are you listening? You have gotten timid in your old age.

  86. Girardi April 27th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

SJ44: I hear you and agree with everything you’ve said. Don’t stop beating that dead horse, because as you and I know there’s no winning it all in our future until that Dead Horse is permanently stationed on his Hawaiian beachfront property. The Defenders just don’t get it. And unfortunately they can be just as annoying as Mets or Sox fans.

  87. murphydog April 27th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

    Girardi:

What’s wrong with you people? I’m not defending or prosecuting Torre. This is a complaint about somebody who writes the same old tired predictable unenlightening bullsh… over and over and over again. If he was restating the Theory of Relativity or The Sermon on the Mount a million times, at some point it’s got to stop.

The old phrase is still around because beating a dead horse is a waste of time, meaningless. The horse is already… ah forget it. You guys deserve each other.
