Karstens: Fractured fibula

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 28, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

X-rays showed Jeff Karstens has a fractured fibula. There is a chance that he could return to pitch this season.

Kei Igawa, as you might expect, is back in the rotation.

For those concerned with Mariano Rivera: He hit 96 twice today and broke two bats. Reports of his demise were premature.

Back with some audio later, on deadline for now.

Pete, do you know who will fill Karstens roster spot? They can’t just leave it open until Mussina comes back, can they? Matt DeSalvo, maybe?

  2. JCR April 28th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

any the news on when Pavano is returning?

  3. Mr. Faded Glory April 28th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Jaret Wright cursed the clubhouse on his way out the door.

  4. Anthony April 28th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Darrell Rasner got scratched for tomorrow night’s start for SWB so it looks like it will be him.

    Pete..Can you confirm that?

  5. Mr. Faded Glory April 28th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Skippy were I to make a guess it would be Rasner.

  6. eric April 28th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

I guess Hughes isn’t going back to Triple A anytimes soon.

  7. Joe from Long Island April 28th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

They will have to make a decision once Moose comes back. Who will be the #5 starter – Hughes or Rasner, I think that unless Hughes comes up huge he should go back to Scranton for all the reasons that we have discussed here, and Rasner, who is 26 yo and is what he his (which is not terribly bad, remember) should stay.

Forget the King of Rehab. Karstens tries to go on a broken leg and this guy is on the DL because of a muscle soreness.

  8. Skippy April 28th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

Oh, I didn’t think Rasner had been down long enough to come back up. I guess it would be him.

  9. Yeah April 28th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

just imagine if it were pavano who broke his leg, he would have gotten carted off on a gurney and been placed on the lifetime dl so he could milk the rest of his contract

I was at todays game, and when Jeff was hit, I think we held our collective breaths. I have to hand it to Kei he really stepped it up today. Lets hope this is a postive step forward for him.

I’ve been to alot of games I don’t think i’ve ever been to a regular season game where the crowd was so electric. We were waiting for a reason to scream and cheer for this team and we finally got it today. Mo looked like the Mo of old. I was very happy to see that. Kyle finally returned from witness protection (even though he did give up a hit). We finally got a starter out of the 5th inning, and who would have thunk it, it was Kei Igawa. LOL

    Hey Carl!
You hear that Jeff Karstens has a fractured fibula! He still tossed a few after that.
I hope your forearm? (you have to be kidding me) gets better soon…

  12. jennifer April 28th, 2007 at 9:23 pm

    **make that a run**

  13. Rey22 April 28th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Damn, what luck. You pitch very well in spring training, earn a spot in the rotation, lose it because of injury, and when you finally return, the first batter lines one right into your leg and fractures your fibula. Hope he recovers soon.

  14. Ron April 28th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

It is remarkable that he managed to give up a hit to Youkilis with a broken leg.

  15. LindaLou April 28th, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Skippy, there is an exception to the 10 day rule when a player is sent down if you need him to replace someone that goes on the DL

  16. Kyle Litke April 28th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Mussina will be back on Thursday, so they don’t need another starter if Hughes stays up. Rasner I believe could come up because someone is getting DLed, I’m not entirely clear on the rules. I’m not sure if he will be the one or not, though. It could be Chris Britton. Someone has to go down for Mike Mussina on Thursday, so it’d probably either be whoever gets called up to take Karstens roster spot, or Hughes.

  17. SJ44 April 28th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Karstans wins over everybody in that clubhouse today, trying to pitch with a broken leg.

Igawa earns his stripes by gutting out 6 very good innings.

Meanwhile…….Carl Pavano continues to nurse his mysterious “sore” arm.

You wonder what goes through the guy’s mind and how he can look anybody in that locker room in the eye.

    Amazing.

  18. JRVJ April 28th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

It should be either Rasner or Britton.

Rasner would give the Yanks some long relief possibilities, while Britton would give some breathing room to the Yankee pen (assuming JT is willing to use him instead of – say – Proctor and Vizcaino).

  19. kasey April 28th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

i’ve gotta say, it’s pretty cool to be able to come home from work after missing the game and pretty much follow along with your blog. thanks for the good work, pete.

much more fun than turning on the television after working all day to watch jeff weaver give up six runs in 1/3 inning. yikes.

  20. JRVJ April 28th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

As to Karstens, well, I liked the guy last year and was quietly rooting for him this year.

I hope he comes back, because it’s a damned shame to have your MLB dream ripped out from you due to dumb luck like he has.

However, perspective should be kept here: he has a broken leg which should heal, plus if I understand MLB rules correctly, he should get full MLB pay while on the DL. Finally, it’s not like his mother’s car got rammed by a truck or something….. (or for soccer lovers out there, like that Portuguese Valencia player of a few years ago whose baby daughter died days after having been born).

  21. randyhater April 28th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Amen, Joe from LI. Karstens begs to stay in the game with a broken freakin’ leg while that yellowbellied snake Pavano kicks back counting his money with an “injury” that no x-ray machine or MRI can detect.

When does somebody get in this guy’s puss, in the middle of the clubhouse, and call him out?

Not that I actually want him to pitch again in Pinstripes (I’ll take C. Wright, Rasner or some other rook with a good attitude any day) but I am so sick and tired of seeing camera shots of him sitting in the dugout, yucking it up, like he’s an actual member of the team.

Let him sit in the dugout up in Scranton where, if nothing else, he’ll have crappier accomodations and less access to prime tail. (No offense ladies of eastern PA.)

    pitching staff on thursday:

    Wang
    Pettite
    Mussina
Hughes(i thinbk he’ll do really well on tuesday)
    Igawa

    Rivera
    Bruney
    Henn
    Farnsworth
    Proctor
    Vizcaino
    Myers
    Rasner

That 13 pitchers so someone will have to be sent down/traded. They are best of having a Long-reliever with Igawa and Hughes in the rotation, so rasner needs to stay. I think Myers will get his act together and get lefties out w/ consistancy. Proctor,Henn, and Bruney are pitching too goo to be sent down. Rivera isn’t going anywhere.

So that leaves Farnsworth and Vizcaino for the last spot.

Pete, what are the chances they trade 1 of them?

They’ll probably send Rasner or Hughes down though, becauce they don’t wanna sell low on either Farnsy or Vizcaino

  23. Mike April 28th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

What’s kind of disappointing is that Igawa is our first two-game winner, while Beckett of the Red Sox already has 5. I’m looking at Wang to come out and show the stuff he had last year.

I was watching the recap of Igawa’s SOs – I think five of them were swinging, and they were some nasty pitches. In the third, he made Lugo fall to one knee trying to hit a pitch. Great stuff today.

  24. Mike April 28th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

Edit: He made Pedroia fall to one knee trying to hit a pitch in the second (not Lugo in the third – my mistake).

  25. David April 28th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Keep 13 and get rid of M-Z.

  26. SP April 28th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

Congrats to Igawa, he had another similiar game earlier this month, I just hope he can avoid Oliver Perez’s fate which is “one good, one bad”. When he’s on he looks pretty good, he missed bad a couple times but otherwise a great job.

I said this yesterday regarding Pavano and I’ll say it again, he should be fired. Karstens, as everybody is acknowledging, tried to pitch with a broken leg! He wants the ball. Pavano’s got a mystery thing grabbing his arm. Last year he fell on his butt. He is a wuss. Try to trade him (yeah right) or release him outright.

Niel: I think Visciano can contribute, he started off alright, I’d give him another shot or two. But Farnsworth is a scary guy to have up in a close game. A 97 mph fastball two feet wide of the plate is not impressive.
Tavaras tomorrow, but soon he’ll be gone when Lester gets back. If he returns to form…wow.
    Schilling
    Beckett
    Matzusaka
    Lester
    Wakefield (Clemens???)
!!!! Damn! Clemens will not sign with the Yanks if they continue to struggle. He wants in on a team that will make the play-offs. So it’s not only a matter of money. And considering his comment from last year, and I’m paraphrasing, “New York? I left nothing in the tank when I left” Doesn’t sound good to me.

  27. Stef April 28th, 2007 at 11:23 pm

Pete, we get regular updates on Mussina’s progress on the DL, but oddly enough, not much about the Rajah. Last I heard, he was throwing on flat ground. Have the Yankees sort of just given up there where he’s concerned.

How are the other guys treating him these days? Just curious if things have gotten chilly towards him again — especially since is current wussiness has really hurt the team. The guy just seems very self-centered to me. I mean, there’s Andy, offering to pitch from the pen. You gotta wonder…

  28. Jimmy the Saint April 29th, 2007 at 2:24 am

I never thought Mo was headed downhill. He looked crappy before because of lack of work. When he gets a regular groove going, he’ll look like the Mo we all know and love.

  29. Steve from Connecticut April 29th, 2007 at 12:26 pm

Just read that Colter Bean gets the callup over Rasner. Apparently, the Yankees need fresh arms in the pen, not in the rotation right now.
