Now it gets dicey

Ah, the 8th inning. What to do?

Kyle Farnsworth got $17 million for three years to pitch in the 8th inning. If you can’t use him with a three-run run at home in the 8th inning, what good is he?

His splits against lefties were decent last season. Myers has been overworked lately. You have to run Krazy Kyle out there.

I’m sure plenty of people will question running for Giambi. But when he’s playing first, you have to get him out of the game with a lead in the 8th inning. Have to. You can’t lose a game because Giambi kicked a ball at first in the 8th inning while Mientkiewicz was on the bench.

Giambi hadn’t played in the field since spring training.

It’s a 3 run lead and Giambi is average at 1B. If the pen holds the lead you won’t need Giambis bat.

You guys are watching this game with the mentality that the game will be tied or we will be losing and in need of Giambis bat. Can’t manage like that.

This should be Doug M’s only purpose on this team. The defensive replacement.

I won’t even feel safe today in the 9th inning with Mo if we get there with a lead after Farnsworth. How sad.

  3. Mike April 28th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

    … Whoo…

I was scared, MLB Gameday said “Run(s)” for Youkilis, so I thought he hit a home run or something – just a single… which is better in comparison.

  4. Rocco April 28th, 2007 at 6:53 pm

Why not keep bruney in there. He was lights out! I think i’m going to throw up.

  5. Joe April 28th, 2007 at 6:54 pm

This is getting to be very frustrating

    Time to step up Farnsworth

  6. Colorado Yank April 28th, 2007 at 6:54 pm

He is not worth it…. Trade this guy for God sake. He is worse that watching George Bush try and complete a sentence.

  7. Yanksmitch April 28th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Global Warming, I hear what you’re saying about managing. You need to keep in mind the state of the bullpen and the bats of the Red Sox though. It’s a tough call I guess, but it’s frustrating to see Torre stubbornly doing the same thing again and again.

  8. Col April 28th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

It doesnt matter if they paid Farnsworth a billion dollars a year, if he can’t do his job – get quick outs – he shouldn’t be pitching in tight situations (like today).

If they don’t win today…oh, if they don’t win today..

  9. Joe April 28th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

    Let’s go Farnsworth

  10. SJ44 April 28th, 2007 at 6:58 pm

    Pete,

You know how I feel about Joe’s in game managing. That said, he has to use Farnsworth in the 8th.

If he isn’t, then he can’t be on the staff because the other guys are just getting overused too much.

He has to be able to pitch for this team. Might as well use this inning to find out if he can help you.

The Giambi switch? 50-50 on that one. I can see your argument though.

  11. Chicago Dave April 28th, 2007 at 6:58 pm

So, who should be on the mound to try to close it out in the ninth? Farnsworth, Rivera, or someone else?

  12. Wolf In Pinstripes April 28th, 2007 at 6:59 pm

I agree with Pete regarding Giambi. I think that’s a good textbook move right now. Giambi has not hit today, and it’s a close game. Do you want him to ruin the lead with an E at first if he’s not producing at the plate to justify keeping him in there? You bring Minky in for what he was signed for, which is defensive ability at the bag. I think the best part was that he allowed Giambi to take the plate appearance before taking him out. Let’s not get in the habit of calling every move that Torre makes a bad one.

  13. Chicago Dave April 28th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

Farnsworth is incapable of putting up an “easy” inning…

  14. Joe April 28th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

    If they are still up

You have to go with Rivera

Today is the day that everyone needs to turn it around

  15. Joe April 28th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

    Crisp got tossed

  16. Josh #2 April 28th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

He should be for acting like a little kid. Now he can sit in the clubhouse and eat some cereal …or something..

  17. Rocco April 28th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

    haha coco

I still think Bruney should have been in there considering the state of the bullpen. I know that supposed to be where Kyle pitches but man does he make me nervous….

Please please please can mo get his 1st save of the season?

  18. Chicago Dave April 28th, 2007 at 7:03 pm

Cocoa has a chip on his shoulder because of his name…I’d have a short temper too if I had to go through life with that name! HA!!!

  19. Ben April 28th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Wow, Farns only gave up one ER. Good thing he had three to work with. Actually, I thought he looked pretty good after the walk to Ortiz. He was hitting Jorge’s mitt and getting some close calls from Froemming.

  20. SJ44 April 28th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Rivera has to pitch the 9th and they have to win this game. Bottom line. No excuses, no nothing.

You can’t always score 7 runs a game. If this team wants to get out of last place, you have to win the close, low scoring games.

Farnsworth is what he is. He got through the inning with the team still in front and faced the heart of the Red Sox lineup.

If Mo can’t get the bottom of the order out, then its not on Farnsworth.

  21. Wolf In Pinstripes April 28th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Farnsworth got out of a jam, but he also created it for himself. No point in keeping him in there, so bring on Mo. He claims he’s not hurt and needs to fix things himself, so give him the opportunity. Despite his troubles so far this year, it’s not like the man has a standing track record of being a choker.

  22. Yanksmitch April 28th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

Yeah, Rivera needs to go in obviously. He didn’t throw many pitches last night, right?

On a side note, Coco’s braids look ridiculous.

Farnsworth got out of it, but that’s a pretty shaky performance from a “set-up” man.

  23. Chicago Dave April 28th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

Yes, it has to be a priority to get Mo his confidence back…so I’d put him out there in the ninth and hope that he gets the job done this time.

  24. Joe April 28th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Rivera hasn’t been able to get into a rhythm this year

He knows how big this game is and he is gonna step up today

The Varitek out is going to be huge

  25. David in Seattle April 28th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

Mo will come in, buy I’d like to see Henn ready to come in if Mo is shakey

  26. Joe April 28th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

    That was just unlucky

  27. Yanksmitch April 28th, 2007 at 7:16 pm

This doesn’t look good. Even Cora is getting in good cuts.

  28. Joe April 28th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

That was a big time play by A-Rod

  29. Joe April 28th, 2007 at 7:22 pm

    Needed that one

    Thank God its over

  30. SJ44 April 28th, 2007 at 7:22 pm

Hopefully, a season changing win. Now, let’s get this season going!!!!!

  31. Anthony April 28th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

Is it possible that Farnsworth is in a game with NY ahead for a potential trade?

Why haven’t we seen Kyle more?

    Serious question.
