Now it’s up to Rivera

Peter Abraham
April
28

Yes, Krazy Kyle can’t be trusted. However, the Yankees will hand the ball to Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning with a lead for only the second time this season. How incredible is that?

The Yankees are only the second team in 19 years to go this deep into the season without a save. The 2002 Detroit Tigers didn’t get a save until May 1.

Frankly, if Mo can’t protect a two-run lead in this game with 8, 9, 1 coming up, then the Yankees have problems that are unfathomable.

Yanks got lucky. I was cursing Torre when Farnsworth came in. Very lucky that it was only 1 run. Farnsworth sucks. “Let’s walk the first batter!”
    Come on, Rivera!

  2. Global Warming(PTS)

Krazy Kyle actually looked pretty impressive. 0-2 on alot of batters, still can’t rely on him but good to see him give up minimal damage.

Now Mo. Please get it done.

  3. wnybirds

I think MO has really been hurt by the unbalanced schedule… The Sox simply see him too much.

  4. Rocco

Kyle showing some emotion. Lets fire these guys up!

  5. Kyle Litke

To be fair, with Varitek likely to pinch hit, it’s more like “7, 9, and 1″. ;)

But yeah, I agree. He needs to get this save.

  6. SJ44

Their problems would be insurmountable if Mo can’t hold 2 run, 9th inning leads anymore.

Folks, Kyle has to pitch. You can’t keep using Vizcaino, Myers, Bruney and Proctor for 2 innings and 20-30 pitches every appearance.

That’s why they are fried right now.

Was it pretty? No. But, he hit 97 on the gun for the first time this year, faced the heart of the Red Sox order, and finally showed some guts.

Its baby steps but, it was needed.

If Mo can’t get the job done, with the bottom of the Red Sox order coming up, then there is nothing you can do about it.

  7. matt

No matter what the end result of this game is, you must admit: it was nice watching Coke-head Crisp throw the temper tantrum when he was caught looking to end the 8th. You gotta enjoy the little things these days!

  8. Chicago Dave

Gotta love Jeter…The model of consistency!

  9. Stuart

the pitch to crisp was a ball..

farnsworth is a knucklehead, so much talent wasted.. farnswoth for Lidge would be a good idea to me!!!!

  10. Chicago Dave

We already have one closer trying to get his confidence back…why do we need another (i.e. Lidge)?

  11. Rocco

i hate those broken bat bloops…. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  12. Chicago Dave

I hate Varitek…Such a pain in the butt that guy is when he plays us!

  13. Rob B

Farnsworth pitched well, IMO. The hit from Lowell was a good pitch that Lowell fought off and just got in for a hit. Sure, he shouldn’t have walked a guy, but I am satisfied with the way he pitched.

Fox’s gun is showing 93 for Rivera. I thought people had said he was throwing 88?

  14. daysleeper

Joe Buck really likes to kick us when we’re down, huh? Did we really need to see that?

  15. Yanksmitch

Arod may have save the game right there with that play! Wow.

  16. Rey22

    SCORE!

  17. Yanksmitch

Now that’s Yankee baseball! Thank God.

  18. Rocco

    PARTY TONIGHT!!!! FINALLY!

  19. Chicago Dave

Hallelujah!!! Back in the win column!!!!!

  20. randy l

    clutch play by arod !

  21. Global Warming(PTS)

Was that Ccott Brosius playing third? ;)

  22. Rob B

The Yankees win! It’s been FOREVER since we’ve been able to say that!

I sat down to watch this game as a baseball fan. I was in the mindset to just try and enjoy a game and not get caught up too much in the Yankee love/Boston hatred part. I haven’t enjoyed a game this much in a long time.

  23. Global Warming(PTS)

    Scott*

Good win by the Yankees. Now everybody can sleep easy.

Wang tommarow vs Taverez! Heads up folks we got a great chance to take the series.

  24. Mike

    Yes yes!!!

Great win, Igawa deserved it. Very happy to see Rivera get his first save of the season – he really needed that.

  25. corsari

Mariano looked like the Mariano he always was. A broken-bat bloob single followed by 3 weakly hit balls for outs.

Terrific play by Alex btw, wow!

And grats to Igawa for a well deserved win, he was great today.

  26. Onkel Bob

Is Mariano sporting the unshaven look for a reason? A playoff beard? I thought big George disliked facial hair, is this what you meant my Uncle Junior mode?

  27. R.B.

I guess Igawa’s back in the rotation for the time being?

  28. WEMISSPAULIE

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY, BACK ON TRACK. TOMORROW WE CRUSH THEM.

  29. SP

    SJ44:

They need to use Kyle? Yes they do, when they are losing 10-0, that’s when they use him. Forget his velocity, it was down, not it’s up.
His velocity has NEVER been the issue. His control is the issue, he loves to walk lead-off batters. What happens? They score, just like today.
AND the ump was being pretty damn generous with Kyle.

Like I said, they got lucky with him in the 8th.

  30. daysleeper

    LET THE WINNING STREAK COMMENCE!

  31. chazzh

    turning point…..

SJ44- Kyle threw 100 on the gun on opening day- at least according to the ESPN gun.

  32. chazzh

igawa is the first yank to get 2 wins- woo- yoo partying in japan tonight….

  33. WEMISSPAULIE

Farns did great, let it go.

  34. Stormy

I’d pay to see Peter grow the coconuts to say any of this to Farnsworth’s face and then watch Farnsworth pound his own chest, do a gorilla screech, and promptly body-slam Peter.

  35. Nigel

I just saw the replay of melky’s double. Manny Ramirez has to be the worst fielding OF in the game. The red sox would be better off putting a german shepherd in left field. At least the dog would chase after balls. Glad to see the yanks turn things around today.

  36. Ethan

Other than the walk, Farnsworth wasn’t bad. Its been said a million times, but he really needs to trust his stuff and throw strikes, especially early in the count.
This win has been a long time coming. Fans should enjoy it, and hope it’s a turning point.

  37. SP

    WEMISS whomever:
We won, that’s great. Farnsworth still isn’t worth the money they gave him.

  38. Stef

Farns wasn’t “great,” he was ok. His job is not to let the opposing team score. At least he didn’t lose the game for us.

  39. Brian

I’m the Red sox fan who had posted earlier that I expected the Yankees to win the last two games of this series. But I never expected Igawa to be the key reason. And I thought Posada was being overworked. Silly me. Baseball is funny (or I’m just stupid).
Rivera looked fine. I’m sure he’ll be OK.
Farnsworth is a heart attack. If Froemming hadn’t expanded Crisp’s strike zone to 24″ by the time the at bat was over, he’d still be looking for the third out.
But that’s why they play the games. There’s a lot on the line tomorrow. As a Sox fan, I’m not optimistic about the Wang/Tavares matchup. Julian is a total nutso …. watch him tomorrow; he’s hilarious (but inept).

  40. David

Actually, the stat you site here is wrong. Its only the second time he’s handed the ball with the a lead of 3 runs or less in the 9th. He pitched in several non save spots with the lead.

  41. Josh

atta boy kei!! thansk for saving us today

    good job mo

  42. CGramazio

I believe Gerald Ford said it best, “Our long national nightmare is over…”

  43. Wolf In Pinstripes

SP, we have something to be happy about for the first time in a week. Why do you have to search for something negative to bring to the table? Not cool.

  44. CGramazio

A german shepard in left field…now that’s funny Nigel. Well said.

  45. Rob B

“Farnsworth is a heart attack. If Froemming hadn’t expanded Crisp’s strike zone to 24â€? by the time the at bat was over, he’d still be looking for the third out.”

My impression was that Crisp swung at that pitch, thus the call. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think that is why the ump called strike 3. Did Crisp swing? I guess that’s a matter for debate. In the replays, it looked to me like he did, but I admit I am biased.

  46. wyrm

    Karstens has a broken leg.

  47. jj

    Karstens Broke his leg!!!
    poor Kid.
    wow In kei we trust!

  48. jay destro

    a win a win I cannot believe a win!!!

  49. SP

    Wolf:
I’ll save the talk of rainbows and unicorns after the World Series is won. Of course I’m happy about the win. Does the talk stop there? No, Mo didn’t blow a save, that’s great. BUT the POINT is that putting Farnsworth in the 8th was a HUGE risk that they got away with and won. He was picked up for that reason, but has not been a consistent reliever.
I’m just hanging with reality. Risk taken, Yanks win. Cool. The ump didn’t punch Crisp out because he swung, it was because it was a “strike”. Lucky Yanks!

  50. mike f

not THAT is hilarious…thanks C Gramazio…and also brian,, the sox fan…i’ve really appreciated your “fair and balanced” reporting. well today was a big sigh of relief

  51. SP

Karsten broke a leg!?? Oh, damn.
Come on Wolf, put a positive spin ON THAT.

  52. Skippy

“Karsten broke a leg!?? Oh, damn.
Come on Wolf, put a positive spin ON THAT.”

I’ll put a positive spin on it–it’s Karstens, not Wang (with apologies to Karstens for his misfortune).

  53. Brian

Rob B ….. Crisp didn’t swing; he couldn’t have reached the pitch with a broom.

  54. GN

First of all, we’ve already cloned Karstens.. we’re calling him Rasner.
Second, I’m feeling terrible, I thought the Yanks would lose 35 straight…but you never know, it’s a long season.

  55. Annie Savoy

Well this will be one of the games that everyone will remember.

The second batter of the game breaks Karstens leg, Igawa comes out of the bullpen to pitch 6 innings of excellent ball, and Mariano saves the game. Posada homers, Jeter has 3 hits and Damon, Matsui and Cabrera each have one. ARod isn’t clutch, he’s hitless.

Sounds like a ‘normal’ Yankees/Red Sox game at the Stadium and that is great. Good to see the smiles again.

  56. CGramazio

I was waiting for the first A-Rod dig. You knew it was inevitable. Even if it’s just being sarcastic…you know sometimes I just can’t tell on this Internet thing without the wink-wink smiley guys.

  57. steve

I feel for Karstens. Poor kid. And with how thin the Yanks’ pitching is, this certainly is unfortunate for them too. But I mostly feel bad for him.

  58. elwoods

Holy moly, a win from the most unlikely hero (OK, except for Pavano). And Karstens tried to pitch on a broken leg?!

  59. Mary

Annie Savoy simply LIVES for the AROD dig. Can ya make up yer mind, sweetie? Three days ago you were all hissy about his meaningless hits. Remember that? We sure do.

  60. Peter Abraham

Hey Stormy: I put my name to it. Kyle or anybody else can say whatever they want. The players know it’s not personal. Besides, all I would need to do is survive the first punch. There’s no chance he could repeat two strikes in a row.

  61. Wolf In Pinstripes

“Come on Wolf, put a positive spin ON THAT.”

Dude, you’re just rude. I politely asked you not to be negative on a good day, that’s it. You can take your sarcastic comments about rainbows and unicorns along with you to the communications class you sorely need.

There’s nothing positive about Karstens’ leg being broken. So don’t patronize me in order to justify your crappy attitude.

There happen to be a few people here that have thanked me for being positive about things, and I appreciate their comments and take pride in them. I’m not going to join in on yours or anybody else’s fellowship of the miserable.

  62. SJ44

Yeah, ARod didn’t get a hit today.

He only saved Mo from having to face Ortiz and Manny with a great play at third in the 9th inning.

    The bum.

  63. steve

    Now THAT’S funny.
