17 straight for Jeter

April
29

That home run extended Derek Jeter’s hitting streak to 17 games, the longest in the AL.

He has hit safely in 56 of the last 58 games and reached base safely in 63 of the last 64.

imagine if abreu got that hit when he had 2 on and no outs instead of, you know, trying to bunt?

I say the Yankees forget about the last 10 days and move on to the next 2 weeks where the only teams they play are the Rangers and Mariners.

  2. Jeff NJ

    Extend him now!!!!!

  3. Ben from boston

it is so depressing how jeter and a rod are having great years but the pitching staff is blowing it. i am sick of losing and am pissed whenever i hear that torres job is under question this is cashmans fault for being so dormant in the off season!!! this is so irritating

  4. Greg C.

That’s great… meanwhile the team looks like they are going to drop to 9-14, wonderful.

With Jeter hitting so well its a shame he’s got an automatic out wasting at bats in front of him.

  5. Ben from boston

yea greg in front of him and behind him…

  6. pb

    i hate papelbon

  7. YankeesRob

I hate him too it’s just a shame he is going to be the all time best closer. Ever.

  8. Joe D

The hardest thing for me? I can deal with what is happening with us but a sold out Yankee Stadium with audible Let’s Go Red Sox cheers? THAT’S what is dring a knife into me!

Fenway holds what, 35,000? Ever hear a Let’s Go Yankees chnat there?

    Pathetic.

  9. SJ44

Ho hum, the last place juggernaut now heads to Texas. Hopefully, with a new manager or with Dr. Andrews on speed dial to peform about 8 surgeries this upcoming month.

    What a trainwreck.

  10. Joe D

I’m so upset I’m misspelling words

  11. Joe D

    YankeesRob

C’mon man. His second year? Remember what they said about Gagne? Get a grip.

  12. Jeff NJ

Joe, I can’t believe how many Red Sox fans were at the game. A few years ago Red Sox fans were rarely seen, and if they were chants of “Ass Hole” started and popcorn was thrown. Now Red Sox fans are everywhere, the subway going was packed with 50% Red Sox fans. I don’t know if they have more fans, they are braver than in the past or if they just more proudly wear their colors, but I do not like it at all.

  13. YankeesRob

Maybe but you just hate seeing him come up in the 9th.

  14. jennifer

Joe it is much easier for a sox fan to get a ticket at yankee stadium, than it is for a Yankee fan to get a ticket in Fenway. I know I can’t stand it either. It is our HOUSE and they come and take it over. :( but that is not the problem at hand. The problem is our pitchers can’t hold leads. And we can’t score after that happens :(

And now a streak of 8 losses in 9 games, lays on the shoulders of a kid. Hopefully he will go out there and pitch his game and not worry about everything that is going on around him.

  15. randy l

“The hardest thing for me? I can deal with what is happening with us but a sold out Yankee Stadium with audible Let’s Go Red Sox cheers? ”
i would ban them all from the park. they are scummy, dirty, evil little creatures.
seriously, the yankees should figure out a way to legally sell tickets so it’s harder for them to get them.

  16. Colorado Yank

Ok so on the premise that is a long season, are the Yankees buyers or sellers come July? I am thinking at this point, sellers. There are too many teams in search of pitching and by then the Yankees will be in 3rd place with no concrete evidence that they will make the playoffs. Who would be the first to go?

My guess in this order – Farnsworth, Bruney, Abreu, Proctor – these four at least fill needs for other teams who might be in the hunt. Toronto needs another pitcher. Milwaukee can use a pitcher, Anaheim could use Abreu….

  17. Keith

I was at the Red Sox errr Yankees game yesterday and it was about 25-30% Red Sox fans. It was disgusting.

  18. Pittsburgh Yankee Fan

Everyone chill out. Let them get it out of the system now. The only question, and maybe Pete can answer, is if Stein is going to fire Torre, or give him another few weeks.

Torre essetially dared his firing by pulling Wang after the sixth.

  19. Rey22

I seriously doubt the Yankees will be sellers in July. And if they are I doubt they’ll trade Bruney. He’s young, inexpensive, and very good.

  20. Jamie

I live on basically the border of Yankee-Red Sox fandom in CT, and since their ring in 2004, the Red Sox fans have came out in drones. They were ashamed to wear their colors before that in public and since they see their team a lot more competitive now, they have no problem going out in public or to the Bronx with Yankee hats and what-not. It’s just how it is.

  21. andrew 33

posada’s in the last year of his contract, if they are in 3rd and fading do they move him come july. if nothing else it would be interesting to see cashmans guy – wil nieves – playing full-time, he might get 10 hits in 300 ab’s

  22. Keith

Jamie, also known as bandwagon fans.

  23. andrew 33

pulling wang after 85 pitches is certainly a questionable call, would they of won if he stayed in, probably not.

but going to proctor given how much hes been used and his less then stellar boston numbers, torre can’t justify it.

  24. jennifer

Wang split is nail. Joe said he’s not sure when he did it. Well I guess Joe forgot about the play at home, that is likely when it happened.

  25. Dennis

OK….As a Sox fan I would like to tell you that I still fear the hell out of this Yankee team. In 2005 you went 11-19 and still won the division. Your lineup as I said on the DailyNews site is by far the best in baseball. When you get healthy you will rattle off a bunch in a row…Stay positive. I hope we are both there when the leaves turn!!

    Take Care.

    Dennis

  26. Mark

I know it’s very early, but so many long-term bad signs already are making me uneasy. Why so many injuries? Why is Torre making so many bad judgements about the pitching? Why did Cashman miss out on both Okajima and Matszuka? Why don’t we have a decent backup catcher? Why did anyone think Pavano would be reliable? Will Farnsworth ever be able to pitch more than 3 times/month?

…and so on….. it’s just beginning to look like this will not be a good year…

  27. Summer

Oh man… — while I appreciate your sentiment, Dennis…a Sox fan trying to cheer us up? You KNOW things are bad then!!

  28. randy l

“Ok so on the premise that is a long season, are the Yankees buyers or sellers come July? I am thinking at this point, sellers”
with all due respect, has the colorado rocky mountain air gone to your brain?!!! this is the yankees we’re talking about.the yankees don’t throw away a season to regroup. they do it on the fly.
sj44 is right about the vibes he is feeling. there’s gonna be a shakeup in yankee land fair or not.
i hate to see joe go after all these years in this way, but it’s inevitable if this keeps up.
if torre is fired, it put’s mattingly or girardi in a terrible position because of their loyalty to joe. because of that ,if joe goes, i think cashman may put bowa in there with kerrigan being the pitching coach as a replacement for guidry.
if that tandem failsl this year then he’d go to girardi or mattingly next year.
my own personal preference is for steinbrenner to fire cashman and get a real baseball gm in there, but it’s a little difficult to fire gms in mid stream so i’m expecting torre to be the fall guy. first bernie and now maybe torre. this is not a good year for the old guard.

  29. steve

Dennis: You really seem to be rare among Red Sox fans: Someone who is gracious and reasonable. You’re so rare that you may not even have a goatee–do you? In any case, thanks for the good wishes.

I, however, am less optimistic, and said so even before the season started. Cashman seems to be SOO inferior to Epstein. I thought the lineup would keep the Yankees in the thick of it, but I never thought the pitching would hold up. Moose, Wang, and Pettitte are DL-prone, and Moose is aging fast. Neither is a #1. Pavano is at the status of legendary in terms of his inability to pitch. Kei was not valued at all by most scouts. Plus, I was shocked that the New York Yankees couldn’t get a halfway decent backup catcher, which you KNOW you have to have, especially if you want to keep Jorge at all fresh for August.

I think (hope) Abreu will get better again, Cano will catch fire, and so on, but I don’t see them surviving this pitching, or Torre’s inability to manage well. If I were George, I’d just buy a good Japanese team and bring them here to replace this crop.

  30. Jonathan C.

Epstein pretty much made horrible moves non stop from 2005-2006. Not sure why he’s superior to Cashman.

  31. Max Cooper

    First my points
-all the fire Cashman talk is bologna, ie. It’s not like he signed bad players.
-the pitching staff would look better with wang and mussina healthy, it’s not like anyone thought they would all get injured at the same times.
-You cannot blame Torre for the injured pitching

    Now my questions

-why was wang pulled after 84 pitches if his limit is due to his injury I understand the count but don’t pull him out 10 pitches prior to his count. (he can have 10 pitch innings fairly easily), the only reason this pull was acceptable was if indeed he had blisters
-why bring in Proctor like everyone said he’s been overused and owned by the sox. personally I would have gone with henn for two innings, he hasn’t been used as much and used to be a starter.
-why if peter says its good to have pitchers go an entire inning did they pull henn in favor bruney with one out and no one on, he came in to face ortiz, he didn’t get him out, either leave him in to finish the inning, or take him out so he doesn’t face ramirez, if he’s in there for a matchup then he should only face one batter, if he isn’t, then let him go the entire inning instead of making another pitcher warm up and come in

on a side note mientkewicz is a great defender, and he’s the 9 hitter, if this lineup can’t score runs without mientkewicz’s bat they’re screwed anyway. if you want to point to a lineup issue, it shouldn’t be minky’s bad bat, it should be abreu’s. how much does it hurt A-Rod’s chances to drive in runs if he’s got a guaranteed out in front of him (not that i don’t have confidence in abreu, but torre obviously doesn’t, by bunting him you’re pretty much guaranteeing he’s an out) if you really want to fix the lineup, give abreu a break, move him down in the order and move everyone up, there are enough good bats that taking abreu’s out until he gets hot won’t have any more negative effects than having his cold bat in the three hole

  32. randy l

” Cashman seems to be SOO inferior to Epstein”
they are both never- played- the -game nimrods, terry ryan would eat both their lunches with equal financial resources. he does ok as it is.

  33. Tim

Some thoughts after knashing my teeth and yelling at the TV alot this weekend:

    1. I am life long Yankees fan and live and die with them, but the Red Sux right now are a better team. They have a lot more productive interactive parts, ie, Cora/Pedrosia, Hinske/Drew, Mirabelli/Varitek, Crisp/Pena. No one in baseball has more depth on their bench, they have speed at the bottom and top of their lineup and they get on to set up Big Sloppy and Manny, they have a much, much better pitching staff soon to get better w/Jon Lester and a very rested bullpen and the best closer in baseball right now: Papelbon.

    2. Yankess still baffle me to no end with stupid, stupid decisions: ie, bunting the #3 hitter in the lineup, its beyond baffling its downright asinine.

    3. Its obvious that Damon is not 100% healthy but with Melky really sucking wind right now at the plate its a domino effect that Damon is forced to play more and he is really not contributing offensively like a $14 million lead off man should be. Also the Yankees are not getting contributions offensively right now at all from Cano, Abreu or Matsui. And with no bench to speak of it’s impossible to bring in someone else off the bench.

    4. The bullpen is still a real mess, but for those who want to see some light at the end of the tunnel check out the Trenton AA team statistics, the team is 18-2, that’s a .900 winning percentage, their 6 starters all have ERA’s under 3.18, including ERA’s of 0.00, 0.90, 1.56, 1.96 , 1.26, and 3.18. And the bullpen ERA’s are just as impressive. Also Rasner has pitchers 8 scoreless innings at Scanton.

This weekend was hard to watch but to blame Torre is not totally right, Cashman has to answer for a terrible bench and the lack of pitching depth. But the good news it appears help is on the way if not this year in the next few.

  34. Cumberberg

    Colorado Yank:
We’re buyers at the deadline because we’re the Yanks. IF I give up on this team, it’ll be in September. This team is too talented to be this bad for long.

“Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no! And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the going gets tough… the tough get going. Who’s with me?”

I’m gonna go have a beer.

  35. Scooter

    Tim -

With all due respect, what are you talking about?
Pedroia and Cora??? I don’t care if Cora did a Babe Ruth impression today, he’s really awful. Pedroia still hasn’t shown me he can hit major league pitching

Lugo and Pedroia are not a good defensive combo up the middle, and you’ll have to remind me what Crisp has done in his time in Boston to be mentioned in the same breath with Damon

I’m not jumping on the Nancy Drew bandwagon just yet

The panic really needs to stop. That Boston lineup is not in any way scary – certainly not in the 2004 sense.

I still think Okajima will be figured out – just as Takatsu was figured out after a lights-out start to his MLB career

Romero and Donnelly are two guys off the scrap heap

Look – the Yankees played like crap – just like they’ve done the last 9 games…. and got beat. You tip your cap, and try to fix your own problems.

    It’s still a small sample size, folks…

  36. Dennis

Steve: I disagree that I am rare. I would say 90 percent of both Yank and Sox fans are good people. Both fan bases are the most savvy in the game and we live and die with our teams. Whenever I meet a Yankee fan in a sports bar or while I am on the road I am always impressed with their knowledge. The one consistent thing we share is a fear/respect for each others teams. I would like to win the division as we haven’t since the Clinton admin however I want us both to be there in October. I would have much more satisfaction beating the Yanks in the playoffs than say the A’s at the Oakland coliseum which can’t sell out a game…!

We both have fans that go on to each others sites and act like idiots. That says a lot about their life. I figure every time when they were young they yelled to their parents to look at them diving off the diving board at the pool but their folks never looked…I would bet that we both have an even number of those fans that crave attention and say things to insight the other…

I am just thrilled that we have this rivalry…

Good Luck. I bet you feel good after the TX series.

    Take Care.

    Dennis

  37. steve

I agree with Tim — which is why I think Epstein’s been so good. Not perfect, but impressive.

  38. SJ44

If that’s the case, then you can’t have a lame duck manager.

I’m all for looking ahead. I do not want a lame duck manager managing the younger players.

He will ruin arms trying to win with a flawed team.

Yes, Cashman deserves heat. But, at $7 million a year, you can’t make the type of in game mistakes Torre makes on a daily basis and continue to make excuses for him.

The mistake Cashman made was looking to rebuild AND compete at the same time. Noble but, can’t be done.

They should have fired him after last off-season.

If they don’t do it now, they are hurting the long term interests of the franchise because, mark my words, he will end up hurting some of these young arms.

He’s a GREAT man but an awful manager. Make the move, bring in some younger legs from the minors and turn the page.

If not, they will stay in last place for a very long time.

  39. steve

Dennis, I live in Massachusetts and am surrounded by Red Sox fans. You’re probably right that most of the fans are OK, and maybe it’s just the loud ones who get my attention, but jeez, there are so many that I do see who are incredibly obnoxious. There’s a real rage that so many of them have, and a paranoia, not merely good-hearted passion. I thought that was just because of the 86 years of not winning, but it didn’t get any better after they finally won. But guys like you show that they’re not all like that. You didn’t answer my goatee question, though :)

  40. Eric

Dennis – you would appreciate this one – I am a diehard Yank fan and in Dec 05 saw Bob Ryan at a NYC restaurant at breakfast – told him my Dad was from NYC and my Mom from Boston and he said “mixed marriage”

  41. randy l

    hey sj44-
where’s hmmm, anaconda, murphydog, lathamjoe, etc when we need them? i guess they are choosing to stay out of the hysteria until things settle down. i imagine peter a. is in there asking the tough questions right now. he was definitely pressured by some on the blog today to question torre more. we’ll see what he comes up with. my level of disgust with the way the team is playing is right up there with yours. i just lean more to cashman than torre as being the problem though it’s clear torre has lost some zip off his fastball.
right now the yankees are a trainwreck. everyone’s fate hangs on steinbrenner’s whim and mood after each loss. i’d say it’s 50/50 if torre survives as manager tonight. the first thing i’m going to do when i wake up is see if anything happens. cashman’s credibility with steinbrenner must be shot after his pushing for torre last fall. i expect this one is going to be 100% george’s call even though peter a. doesn’t think that’s in cashman’s contract. he’s wrong on that one. peter a. for all his experience is still a newbie around here. and he’ll be the first to tell you he roots for the story.
either way , there’s going to be one hell of a story around the yankees this week. this has all the makings of a tipping point week.

  42. Stef

Tim – Suzyn reported that Joe said Abreu decided to bunt all by himself. You may have noticed that he can’t buy a hit right now.

  43. Annie Savoy

    Pete –

I’ve heard that Joe’s brother Frank will be having a kidney transplant this week donated by his daughter. Any word if Joe is going to take a day or two to be with the family? Might be a good idea for Joe to get away from the game and spend some time in the real world, and also let us see what Donnie Baseball has to offer as a stand in manager.

Cashman should do something now about dumping Pavano – he is a drain on the team in every way. Obviously he either can’t or won’t play hurt when many others do.

Thankfully, Derek is still Derek. Anyone who questions his leadership skills on and off the field isn’t paying attention.

  44. Dennis

    Steve:

I grew up in MA and have been moved around the country with a true evil empire…a major oil company.

Both teams have the same percentage of idiot fans. I do believe though that the Patriots recent success have given some New England fans a certain weird arrogance/insecure cockiness.

But you should know that here are a bunch of knucklehead Yankess fans out there that have all their self worth in the amount of rings the Yanks have.

I know you live in the “belly of the beast” but honestly most folks are reasonable. Boston is home to Harvard-BC-BU-Tufts-MIT-Northeastern and so on and so on…Please do not be jaded by the “idiots” that have something to prove…

I have a full beard but I shaved before the game Friday night.

    Take Care.

    Dennis

  45. susan mullen

I solved the problem of too many Red Sox fans at Yankee Stadium: I stopped going to any of the games. Nor do I watch them on tv. It’s much better that way. I check things out periodically by other means just in case things are going well. But that’s usually not an issue.

  46. Eric

Been doing that also Susan – another alternative is to put the games on but on mute – I chekc this blog and also nyyfans.com for their game thread.

  47. Brian (Red Sox Fan)

I stumbled across this blog a couple of days ago and you folks all do a great job. I’ve posted a few things previously (I tried to be balanced), but was leery about contributing after today’s game for fear that I’d look like I was piling on.

As a Sox fan who saw Ted Williams hit a fly ball to Yogi Berra while Berra was playing right field in Fenway Park (that’s true), I’m confident that the Yankees will right the ship (as they always do). Believe me, the Sox aren’t this good overall. Their lineup is spotty, and their defense is poor.
But those three front-of-the-rotation-starters are legit, Wakefield battles and eats innings, and Papelbon (if healthy) is dominant. The Japanese lefthander (I forgot his name – my bad) has been our Aaron Small (i.e. manna from heaven). Those six have allowed the rest of the bullpen to find roles that suit them, and avoid overexposure.

The Yankees will score runs, and they will get back into it, but their starters, with the exception of Wang, are either past their prime, or not yet (if ever) ready. And even Wang lets a lot of balls in play … the statheads don’t like that (something about the law of averages catching up with contact pitchers), and he is 0-2 this year.
So I don’t see that the pitching is going to improve a whole lot.
I previously posted that ESPN had reported that 13 of 14 ARod homers were off fastballs. Jery Remy said on today’s telecast (in so many words) that it would be a cold day in hell before ARod saw anything but breaking/off speed stuff from the Red Sox.
Also, both Remy and Dennis Eckersly are sure that Abreu is bunting on his own. Eckersly said he was embarrassed for the guy, that it was ridiculous to run up the white flag like that when you’re in the three hole.
Anyhow, hang in there guys (and gals). Water finds it’s level, and the Yankees WILL make a run. But only four teams make the playoffs, and there are a lot of good ones out there. This isn’t the NL.

  48. General Tsos Chicken

I hate Carl Pavano. He is ruining the Yankees.
