Something tells me Cashman is going to be on the roadtrip.

If this team wants Joe to continue to be their manager, they better start winning games.

Despite falling on the sword nobly, I don’t know how much longer Cashman can defend the indefisible.

Sometimes, right or wrong, you have to make a change to shake things up.

Perhaps, its not yet the time.

Another one win week? That may be pushing the limits of even the most levelheaded decisionmakers in this situation.

  2. Sebastian

What is the Yankees ERA so far this season? What is the Combined ERA for starters and for the bullpen?

  3. jennifer

    Team era is 4.93

  4. Jonathan C.

Unless whoever replaces Torre is a healer, I don’t think a change in managers is going to make a difference.

It’s hard for me to say that Cashman is to blame. It takes a while to cultivate a great team and as far as I’m concerned, Cashman has had his hands tied for a long time and Steinbrenner and whoever it is in Tampa have made some bad decisions over the years. Am I wrong or did Steinbrenner want folks like Brown and Wright? Cashman wanted Guerrero, Steinbrenner wanted Sheffield. Sheffield’s great, but Guerrero was the way to go I think. Didn’t Steinbrenner have problems with Pettitte? He left after his second 20 game season. Maybe somebody can shed some light on what decisions Cashman has made that have been positive and negative. In the meantime, here are some more talking points:
Who brought in/found Small and Chacon? I’m guessing Cashman. They did great (even though I think they went to every other pitcher before getting to them). Who got Abreu? Ok, he’s in a slump, but it worked out last year and will probably pan out this year as well.
The issue with Pavano is why did any team want him? He always had injury issues and was a losing pitcher with one good season.
I have the impression that Cashman has had more control over the past year and not much before then, but in baseball it takes a bit longer than a year to right a ship. Until somebody makes a good case, I don’t think Cashman should go or is at fault.

  6. wood is good

Damon, Abreau, Cano, and Matsui are looking sad out there at the plate. Abreau especially seems lost. With those four not producing, it’s no wonder we’re slumping so badly. Firing Joe isn’t gonna get them back on track, but something needs to be done to wake them up.

  7. pat m

    SP- good points about Cashman

bobby abreu—2 for 33? Slumps are part of the game. Just ask the Captain about that 0 for 32 a few years back. Abreu will break out and so will the rest of the team, though Cabrera worries me.

sometimes the best thing for a team is a road trip and maybe warmer weather will help too. Keep the faith!

  8. Ben from boston

no offense man but you need a better recorder i turned it up all the way the sound quality is horrible

  9. Will

Is Joe doing as good a job as he could/should? Had he made better decisions, might this 1-8 slide been more like 3-6? I think these are legitimate questions. While “crazies” might be extreme in their criticism, I think the pro-Joe crowd is short sighted for completely dismissing the possibility that the team might be better off without Joe.

  10. Sebastian

This riminds me of 2005 lets not forget that this rotation seems to be a little bit better than what it looked like in 2005 lets hope that Hughes becomes part of the solution, lets hope Wang turns it around.
I realy whant to see Hughes in the rotation.
Once the offense stops slumpping the season will start taking shape.
Lets remember this is the Yankees the pinstripes have to count for something.

  11. SP

I think Will is right that perhaps some moves over the last stretch of games have been questionable. Bringing in Proctor against the Red Sox is dangerous and bringing Farnsworth with anything less than a 6-run lead is plain dumb.
The players need to take the blame as well, but there is occasionally a “Torre loss”, where he has failed as a manager. But he can’t be blamed for all of them this season, sometimes he makes the right calls and still gets a loss. But it’s entirely possible that the slide could be more like 3-6 right now.

  12. Doreen

I think Damon should go on the DL. He’s not helping himself, and he’s not helping the team. Take 2 weeks off, see the chiropractor everyday, get healthy. Then come back and do the job. It makes no sense to me to continue to go out there. And it can’t be left up to Damon. It is a source of pride for him that he’s never been on the DL, but it is misguided pride.

Abreu and Matsui will be fine—they’re both proven hitters and will come around. The really unfortunate thing is that they’re slumping at the same time. You can’t call Damon’s problems a slump—he’s clearly too hurt to play effectively.

Cano needs to be more patient at the plate, but I he is a good hitter. Has he ever suffered this kind of slump before? I don’t think so. He’s still young and relatively inexperienced.

I don’t know with Proctor. He’s always given up the HR, though, and until he has a good outing or two, he’s suspect. But, you have to keep sending the guys out there as long as their not injured.

I agree that a road trip “should” help—but this bad time BEGAN with the road trip to Boston, after a sweep of the Indians. Go figure.

The real problem is the stone-cold Yankees ran into the red-hot Red Sox at the wrong time. 5 of the 8 losses came against the Red Sox.

Just a comment regarding one poster’s complaint that there are too many Red Sox fans at Yankee Stadium. Perhaps the problem is no so much that the Red Sox fans were so loud, but that the Yankees fans (whom I would presume to be the greater percentage of fans) could not or would not, but at least did not drown them out. Yankees fans don’t get it going until a rally is well begun. Otherwise, they sit there waiting for something to happen. (I say “they” meaning the majority—I’m sure there are always those avid fans who do what fans are supposed to do—start to cheer BEFORE the action).

  13. SJ44

When asked about Proctor’s numbers against the Red Sox, his answer was, “A lot of that was when he first faced them”.

I guess he forgot the three run HR that cost them last Sunday night’s game and the Friday performance.

Folks, he never learns and never will. Just the way it is.

The injury excuse is gone now since Wang is now 0-2 in his return.

Ya’ can’t hang that excuse on Moose coming back. Its not like this team is talentless.

Sometimes, you need more from the bench. They aren’t getting it.

  14. GoYanks

    Peter,

Took a cheap shot at you earlier i.e. “What question are you going to ask . . . need suggestions”

I apologize – just frazzled and dazzled with what is going on. Frustration, Frustration, Frustration, again, I am sorry.

Thank you for this blog and your “extra” efforts in getting us the inside scoops.

  15. Doreen

Perhaps the Yankees were not stone-cold when they FIRST played Boston, but they were injury-riddled and pitching compromised.

  16. Tom (Eastchester)

    Peter,

Why do the writers have this obsession with the job status of Joe Torre? I know it is an easy headline but please do some investigation of the steroid mess or J. Damon’s back, anything else.
No writer has been able to back up the GS talk with a quote. Has anyone but his friends gone on the record?
Who is playing the role of Edith Wilson?
That would be a good story to investigate.

  17. Sebastian

Lets look at it on the bright side (ok technicaly speeking there is no bright side) but its only april and lots of games ahead, besides what are the odds of the red soxs not suffering any injurys, Wakefield is injury prone, Papelbon is injury prone, Timlin is injury prone, Varitek and Drew, besides Becket has had a good april he might go down hill and what i saw of Dice-K was not all that impresive (Im no expert but 10 runs in 14 innings, plus the walks) there is still some games ahead and lets not forget Boston has played grate baseball before the all satr brake and gone down hill after in both 2005 and 2006 so a lot of things can happen from now till september (of course the yankees could have their share of problems but lets be possitive and think that from now on things will go uphill insted of down)

  18. Anthony

When is Clemens going to announce his decision on whether he will play this year and for what club?

  19. j

Is anyone curious to at least see what the teams record is like after two turns through a rotation that looks like this:

    Hughes, Pettite, Mussina, Wang, Igawa

If we go 3-7 or something horrific like that, it’d be hard to defend some head hunting. But the name of the game (to a certain point) is patience. Wang is not going to pitch 8 scoreless on his first game back from the DL. Phil Hughes isn’t going to throw a no-hitter in his MLB debut. A tired bullpen doesn’t become rejuvenated because of 1 day off. It seems like we could be on the doorstep of turning this around with a road trip to Texas (where we usually play well). The bats need to wake up; the pitchers need to look to throw a CG in 110 pitches or less.

One thing’s for sure, an off day after a game like today definitely sucks. Ugh.

  20. j

Anthony- The reports on Clemens say he will decide late May. IIRC he took about 3-4 weeks to get it going, so we could expect him to be on the field (on whichever team) by the end of June or so, I think.

  21. Brandon

I’ve been saying this no manager would burn out the pen like Torre has it’s one thing to blame SP then let the SP pitch out of their problems stop w/ the quick hooks because your killing your SP and your RP at the same time. He will be lucky to make it to the AS break as Yankees manager, I seriously think he gets fired , Damon will have to lose some time so now we’re weak at the top of the order, Cashman had to cancel a scouting trip, it’s clear Torre’s head is on the line, it’s sad because I love Joe Torre but he isn’t getting it done and has damaged alot of arms this season and wasted good production from Alex, Andy, Wang and even Rasner in the start vs Bos

Pete I’m telling you Girardi or Bowa will be the next successor. I don’t see Torre making it this year.

  22. Keith

We need to turn this around…fast.

  23. Dizzy

the blame every bad thing on the evil tampa contingent and let cashman slide crap has to end if i remember correctly steinbrenner wanted ichiro and cashman talked him off it ..steinbrenner also wanted ortiz but cashman didnt think it was worth signing him hows that move worked out.. what about not signing carlos beltran who was gonna come to the yankees for a discount and now were stuck with a handicapped guy playing center, how many awful pitchers has cashman brought to the yankees? all i heard this offseason was how stacked the yankees pitching depth is in the minors.? where are these guys? chamberlain betances and maybe kennedy are the only guys i see worth anything and these guys are A ball pitchers..whelan?? clippard? im supposed to be happy that hes shedding payroll when the sox are spending money signing players like matsuzaka thats gonna burn us for the next 5 years.what are the yanks gonna get desperate and sign uehara this offseason..sign uehara and igawa..you shgouldve just signed dice k in the first place. drop the ball on okijima..how are we supposed to contend with the sox when they own wang and they own mussina..they own us..face it cashman has put together a very overrated team with huge flaws and torres brain dead in game managing is killing us..and the scary part is you cant even blow this team up..but at least give us some blood steinbrenner we want blood!!! we want blood!!!!and bring some horses in here for gods sake. this is inexcusable.

  24. Billy Mo

Let me preface this comment by stating that I am 100 percent in back of Torre and do not think he should be fired. He has made some questionable moves this year but its baseball and not every move is going to work out over a 162 game season. The guy has led the team to the playoffs 11 straight seasons, every year he has been here. He’s won 10 AL East Championships (9 in a row, with 97 being the only exception and even then they only lost to the Orioles by 2 games). He has 4 WS rings in 6 world series appearances. 6 pennants!! Oh and he was manager of the year a few times too. Can any Torre doubters even begin to comprehend how rare these accomplishments are especially in this era? Oh, but he had the highest payroll, he didn’t have to do much. Really? Tell that to Knick fans and see what they say. Last time I checked, you still have to go out there and win 95 or so games just to make the playoffs then survive 3 grueling rounds to hoist that trophy. So I don’t want to hear that argument. The fact is that Torre deserves the benefit of the doubt given his track record and at the very least has earned the right to serve out the remainder of his contract this year.
That being said, if they do make a change who is likely to be hired? Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am the biggest Mattingly fan there is but I am not sure he is experienced enough to be the next manager. The two people I would look at are Girardi (an obvious candidate) and my dark horse is Larry Bowa. If Steinbrenner feels that Torre’s calming influence is not working and the team needs a wake up call and a good kick in the butt, Bowa would be the guy to do it. He’s fiery and has had success managing in a tough baseball town before. Thoughts on this anyone?

  25. Anthony

Thanks. I think George will give Cashman a blank check to get him to NY. I expect him here with his best friend Pettite on the club and he has too much respect for Torre and Steinbrenner to go to the Red Sox.

Lets just hope the Astros continue to lose.

  26. Peter Abraham

SJ44: Torre was right. I researched Proctor’s numbers against Boston since July 1, 2006 and they’re OK. Not great but not bad.

Again, if one of your prime set-up men can’t get through Crisp, Cora and Lugo, what is he on the team for? It wasn’t like Torre put him in their against somebody who murders him.

I know you guys don’t understand this but Torre gets a 100-page 3-ring binder of information on every team they play before the series starts. He, Kerrigan, Guidry, Mattinly and the other coaches know all the numbers. But at some point you have to walk up to players and gauge their readiness to play on a given day.

There is no metric for that, there just isn’t. There’s a human element to the game. If Kyle Farnsworth says he’s not feeling great, is Torre supposed to say “Well, you’re park-adjusted ERA+ against this team is great, you have to pitch.”

    It doesn’t work that way.

  27. Angel

“There’s a human element to the game. If Kyle Farnsworth says he’s not feeling great, is Torre supposed to say “Well, you’re park-adjusted ERA+ against this team is great, you have to pitch.â€?

    It doesn’t work that way.”

It does in MLB 2K7, Pete. :-)

  28. Anthony

Cashman is awful. He’s had two years to build something here, and before you say that’s not a very long time, that’s all it took for Omar Minaya to turn the Mets into the best team in the NL and he certainly started with much less. Give the controls to Billy Beane, Terry Ryan, or Loria with the money that we have available and I guarantee you this team would not have entered the season with such a fragile rotation. Can anyone even say they are that surprised by what’s happened to the rotation? It’s not like what happened was unforeseeable, yet this is the team Cashman chose when he could have given us reliable starters in guys like Lilly, Meche, or Suppan. Instead he became a cheapskate and refused to shell out the money that we fans spend on the damn team on something reliable. He’s become someone who bets on longshots. Things like Aaron Small coming along and winning 10 games without a loss don’t just happen, you can’t bet on the team finding something like that to get past these early season difficulties. The Red Sox are also a much stronger team this year than they were in ‘05. So I don’t buy the ‘05 comparison. We were extremely lucky that year and last year, we shouldn’t simply count on our luck continuing when we had the ability to put ourselves in a more secure position over this offseason. Cashman CANNOT get a pass for counting on Pavano to be part of this rotation. That blunder is just inexcusable, especially when you are also bringing in a highly questionable unproven Japanese starter as your number 5. FIRE CASHMAN NOW. I don’t think it can be any clearer that that is the best decision that could be made at this point.
