Minky makes a mark

I understand that most everybody hates Doug Mientkiewicz and that home run won’t change a lot of minds. But a few things:

The Yankees are second in the majors in runs scored with 127. That’s 5.77 a game, a pace that will give them 935 for the season. To suggest Mientkiewicz is somehow holding the Yankees back is just ridiculous. From a statistical standpoint they could have one of the Teletubbies batting ninth and they would score a ton of runs.

Meanwhile, this game is three innings old and Mientkiewicz has already made two plays of significance. He came off the bag to take a throw from Derek Jeter and made a swipe tag to get Alex Cora in the third inning. Then a few minutes later he made a nice throw to the plate and saved a run.

Jason Giambi doesn’t throw that ball and if he does, it’s wild.

Give a guy a shot. He’s a historically slow starter and when it’s all said and done, he’ll hit .250 and save a bunch of runs.

Look at it this way, he has two more home runs than David Wright.
