Welcome,LathamJoe
Just a feeling. We are fans of New York Yankees. We should be crazily rooting for our team no matter what, right? That's why we watch ball game. That's why we love it.No one can perdict what will happen before season start. No one can perdict what wil happen from now until the end of this season. That's why baseball game is so attractive for us.That's why each season is different. Our Yankees team will have different trouble every year. That's why we enjoy it and remember it.One day,we will recall this memory and maybe feel "Wow!How amazing season is!"

Let's go Yankees!!

Thank you for your Post, Jessica. Many of us have become spoiled with success and forget that there is a human side to baseball.
During the Early Spring, before the beginning of the Season,
I could count the number of posts on one hand that actually felt the Yankees didn't have the talent - or the leadership - to win a World Championship in 2007.
And now, after 23 Games, many are calling for wholesale changes in the team and its leadership.
There is an old proverb that I'm sure you've heard: "Hindsight is 20/20."

Joe was incredibly fortunate during the 1996-2000 run, with every hunch paying off, and guys like Jim Leyritz, Chad Curtis, Graeme Lloyd, Scott Brosius, and Luis Sojo having incredible timing with their hitting and pitching. After Mariano threw that bunt into CF in Phoenix in 2001, it's been all downhill, except where Grady Little gave him a hand in 2003.

The worm has turned, partially because his luck has run out, but because this team is not constructed to play little ball and produce the kinds of situations that allowed those hunches to pay off.

Also, roster disasters like Jeff Weaver, who begat Kevin Brown an even bigger disaster have killed this team in the post-season, while more mid-priced teams have used the Yankee formula from the late-90s, of a few stars with solid role players to win championships (just not 4 out of 5).

Joe should be able to stay a long as he wants.

After first month of 2007 season.I am so amazed by the majority of Yankees fan reaction.

I am a Yankees fan who is from Taiwan since I was studying in US couple years ago. Before that,i was crazily rooting for one of Taiwanese pro baseball team. The team i was rooting for is not a good team. They lost a lot of games and don't have good record. They have a good hitting team and terrible pitching staff.I was still crazily rooting for them even though they keep losing. Finally, they got into playoff one year and got championship.I was so happy until police in Taiwan find out most of players in this team cheating.Players took money from some people involved in gamble and played some fake game. After that,I stop rooting for baseball games many years until I fall in love with Yankees when I was stuyding in US couple years ago.

Yankees keep losing now.Of course,I don't feel good.I have been in those kind of feeling before when i was crazily rooting my Taiwanese team.I only care the players in yankees playing hard, fighting for win. That's all you can ask for. They may or may not be in the playoff this season. So what?I still enjoy the game.I am still watching most of games.I am a fan,not manager, reporter or general manager of New York Yankees.

As for Torre,I like Torre.I hope he will stay. The simple reason for me is he care about players, not just winning ball games. That's some thing i don't see a lot from most mangers in Taiwan.I don't care how bad he manage during a ball game.Torre does a great job to protect players. When players had bad performance,he didn't throw them under the bus under most situation. He does great job to communicate with a lot of media in New York.As you guys understand,of course,I am rooting for Chien-Ming Wang.Torre didn't use him on short rest on the fourth games in the ALDS of 2006 because he worry about Wang's health.Again,Torre didn't let Wang's pitch counts get so high after Wang just come back from DL.This is just something I won't see this from our mangers in Taiwan. They just care winning even though they ruin players' career.

In my opinion, most players in the Yankees team. They play hard. They are fighting. They don't need someone to motivate them by doing some crazy thing.

For example,Chien-Ming Wang told Taiwanese media after Sunday game.He said his performance is unacceptable.(In my opinion, four runs in six innnings vs Boston is not terrible)This is his second start back from DL.Wang said he should do better than first time.Taiwanese media keep asking Wang about his nail. Most of Taiwanese including media try to find an excuse for him.

Wang kept saying his pitch high.He didn't pitch well. There is nothing to do with his nail. After game,Torre said on the radio show. They consider to skip his next turn.Wang told Taiwanese media he will make his next turn.

We are talking about a guy like Pete said who was bleeding since third inning and pitch until six innning. He didn't want to come out the game, don't want to miss next turn, and didn't use this as excuse.Since come out DL,He pitches with his leg wrapped. This kind of player you don't have to motivate him(We all know who need that)

Most Players in the Yankees like Wang.Damon play hurt.Jeter won't come out of game.He only come out of game when he get hit by pitch and can't walk.I know they make a lot of money, but they all fighting for win. That's all we can ask for as a fan.

Let's go Yankees!Let's go Yankees!Just enjoy the game! They are fighting!

Sorry for this long comment.

if george isn't george, the yankees are screwed. the yankees have the organizationalstructure of a mom and pop catskills liquor store. steve swindal was in charge of the
yankees only a few months ago. that's how bad george's judgement appears to have eroded. very few baseball families survive the estate tax hit. it not likely the steinbrenner family will keep the team despite what they say. if they do ,how do they compete with a relatively young baseball fan in john henry who's worth 4-5 billion dollars who owns the red sox?
there is something cleary wrong for george to not be taking charge here. that's the big story here. this isn't just a losing streak or misuse of the bullpen issue.
we may be seeing the end of an era. the yankees need an owner who's in charge. we need george to be george.

An interesting thing about Sherman. I saw him do post-game analysis on a My9 Yankee broadcast and it was one of the best I've ever seen. I wonder if the Post forces him to write bad articles.

Jeff NJ,

I may stand corrected. Our pitching really was bad in April 2005. I just don't think we had chronic 4-5 inning starts though.

Joel Sherman wrote that "during the past 11 years, as well, and he has 11 playoff appearances, 10 division titles and four championships."

The obvious question Sherman does not address: Would a different manager have fared particularly worse (or better), being handed the same 1-2 billion dollars worth of talent over the same period?

I don't subscribe to the theory that managers aren't responsible (at times, at least) for the performance of the guys who swing the bats and throw the balls. Clearly there are managers who make smarter decisions than others, who are better motivators of their team, who work better with their staff, and who keep the team more on track to perform at their best.

To this outside observer, it is pretty hard to tell if Torre is really a great manager or just an average one blessed with an unusual amount of talent to work with. The phenomenal results before 2001 and the unsatisfactory ones since then may tend to suggest that the elements of chance and high payroll have more to do with his fortunes than any unusual skill.
