Clearly, Steinbrenner is a genius
It’s the fifth inning as I write this and the Yankees have nine runs on 11 hits. They had 15 runs in their previous four games.
Obviously the fire-and-brimstone from Big Stein worked. It didn’t hurt that it’s 69 degrees here and Texas has lousy pitching.
Meanwhile, I asked Brian Cashman if he planned to visit Houston on a recruiting trip while he was in Texas. He laughed and said no. Rogers Clemens is not on his agenda at the moment.
“I’ve had every conversation I could have,â€? Cashman said. “They know where we stand. … If there’s any way we can influence him, we’ve already done our share of trying to do that. At the end of the day, you have to give him the space to make the decision. We’ll have to wait for it to unravel.â€?

I have to ask — are you a superstitious man, Mr. Abraham?
no, no, NO!
you’ve jinxed this team twice already this season with these kinds of posts, and now you’ve likely taken a no-hitter away from hughes.
damn you, abraham, daaaammmnnn yyoooouuuu!!!
how hilarious is that super-intense stare papelbon delivers? cracks me up every time.
He didn’t mention the unmentionablt. on the other hand YOU did KASEY
Jeez, Kasey, did you have to name That Which Cannot Named?
*sigh*
In any event, it’s nice to see five innings of good Yankees pitching. The longer it lasts, the better, but I’m not greedy. A win would be just fine.
the texas broadcasters started mentioning it in the third.
Question about Hughes: I never followed it closely, but I inferred from spring training last year and this year that his fastball was in the mid 90s (a “mini Rocket”), but the radar speeds on TV tonight suggest high 80s to low 90s for the most part. Just wondering what the reality is? With his curve and change I’m sure it makes the fastball seem faster, but how hard does he throw the heater? (Not a knock on him at all, of course — just a question.)
Is the soxs game still in the top of the 9th? or did gameday freeze?
No excuses!
Besides, they have to. Broadcasters are paid to jinx stuff, especially home broadcasters when the visitors are doing the jinxable.
I suppose we’ll forgive you this time, though. Well, as long as the Rangers don’t score 10 in the bottom of this inning, at least.
no, papelbon got out of it, but not before he blew the save.
Steve, on average it’s about 91-92, but he gets it p to 93-95 occasionaly.
When I followed him in the minors last season, people were saying that he pitched mid 90′s consistantly, and he even touched 97 every once and a while, but obviously that isn’t true. Now his fastball b only be on average 92mph, but it looks like its being thrown alot harder, especially with his offspeed pitches, it definately looks like it’s 95+.
Hopefully they get out of the bottom of the 9th. I would be curious to see if they leave Papleblown out there for another inning.
and back to Phil. Hopefully he doesn’t get too hyped up. Stay with whats been working.
Cano swings at that high cheese, again. I dont’ know what’s with him and swinging at that high fastball to strikeout. He must have done that more than 10 times already this season. He took that pitch last season, for the most part. Melky is swinging at that high pitch too ths season, which he didn’t do as much last season.
Cano has had a great day but i would have liked to see him hit one on the screws in that at bat.
It could be true as the season warms up, remember this is what, his 5th or 6th start? He has hit 93 today. I think at his best he throws about 95, with an 80 mph changeup and 68 mph curve. They say good pitchers have 10 MPH of seperation, Hughes has 25-30…I think that will do.
Cano could NEVER lay off that high fast ball but that will come with more experience he does however lay off the down and away which is key for a lefty.
I haven’t watched all of the game but it seems like Hughes’ offspeed must be really working tonight, 10-1 ground to fly out?
Not that I want this to happen but if Torre pulls Hughes with a no hitter in the 8th w/ 95 pitches and puts in Proctor the response on this blog will be hilarious
If this is a sign of things to come for Hughes then damn, I pity opposing hitters in the future.
Thanks for prodding Pete. That’s hilarious!
It popped?? They read the trainers lips. OH MY GOD. i am going to be sick.
I like when George gives Cash and Joe alittle push, they seem to get too comfy sometimes.
