The big story in the papers today, of course, was George Steinbrenner’s statement. Here is how the Journal News presented the story.
I find the whole “statement” game amusing. It was released right at 1 p.m., so Mike and Mad Dog could read it to open their show then discuss it for a while. I’m sure the Yankees loved that.
Meanwhile, does any believe Steinbrenner really uttered those 127 words? Two months ago in spring training he answered three questions with one word each. Suddenly he’s Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg.
But at least this mini-crisis is out of the way. Hopefully we’re talking about Phil Hughes next and not statements from the owner.
