Blog updates explained

Sorry for the lack of updates during the game.
For those who haven’t figured it out, I work for a daily newspaper and have two or three stories to write on every game. The game was a 8:06 p.m. start (East Coast) and I needed to have copy in as soon as the game ended. I can’t miss deadline. We have four editions.
Beyond that, obviously he had pulled his left hamstring and was out of the game because of that. You really need this blog to figure that out?
Also, we can’t interview people until after the game. Posting “Phil Hughes pulled his hamstring” was all the information I had.
I’m doing the best I can to update the blog as often as possible. But for games outside of the Eastern time zone, it’s tricky.
Thanks for your patience.

You’re doin a bang-up job Pete. There’s a reason this blog is the most visited Yankee blog. I’d like to see some of the others try to be as complete.
Hey Pete, no worries at all. You’re doing the best you can and we all appreciate it. Deadlines come first.
On Hughes….anyone else feel this is kind of like going out to the BMW dealership for the first time and getting the expensive, fast, fully-loaded car you have always wanted then just after you pay the guy and start to drive off, you get T-boned coming out of the dealer’s parking lot? Thats kinda what I feel with Hughes right now.
Pete,
I think you are doing a great job, and I know most of us appreciate what you are doing…keep up the good work
Pete,
You owe no explanation. This is the best Yankees blog by far and you give more info than any of the others. It was obvious you were on a deadline and that the paper stories come first. Anyone who doesn’t get that is lost.
Thanks for the update.
seriously peter, a hamstring injury happens to anyone, anywhere (in MLB land). please dont start in on the whole “i told you so” thing on hughes. we all know that its a marathon . and lets face it, he was awesome.
Pete – from all the fans out there that have entirely changed the way they followed baseball – thanks for everything.
Everything happens for a reason. With Hughes on the DL, he comes back after the All-Star break. By then, we see what this team is made of. There are few years I feel as good and bad about a team as I do this year. When clicking, you literally couldn’t find a better team in the majors. When they are off, they could lose to anyone, and multiple days in a row.
Sometimes, you need a fire to regrow. Wang and Cano show us what can happen when you give a guy a chance. I hadn’t heard of Cano, and now I can’t imagine a team without him. Hughes goes down with a leg issue, it gives the Yanks a hole to fill. Maybe DeSalvo shows us something, maybe Clippard. Maybe Chase comes back and gets a few starts under his belt not giving up a statistically near impossible HR feat. Imagine a rotation, GASP, that doesnt cost $75MM…and if it doesn’t work…we can always sell more Spring Training caps.
Have faith, guys…it will turn around for sure. This year? Who knows…
I echo the others. I suppose since new people are finding this place for the first time they need to be reminded. Keep up the great work Pete!!! Subway Series in ‘07!!!
Pete,
please ignore the haters…i’m astounded by the dedication you show to us fans w/ this blog…it is that much more amazing when i think about all the ingrates complaining about your input.
fwiw, i agree w/ you about how the Yanks shoulda left PH at AAA, but that is only hindsight and life goes on…
at least i get more work done these days while the Yanks are sucking…
No worries, Pete. I think it was just a vocal minority that was making a lot of noise about this. The overwhelming majority of us appreciate the fact that you take the time to post to this blog at all, never mind post as often as you do.
Seriously, thanks. There’s a reason we all come here.
I am glad to read many smart posters.. To say this injury occured because he is in the majors is idiotic. It can happen to any pitcher even the mercenary Clemns has had more then one hammy injury in his career. the bottom line is Hughes looked fabulous…curve, change, and fastball. I know he cannot possibly pitch that good everytime but his stuff is off the scale…..
4 -6 weeks hurts that is 8 starts or so…
Thanks Pete, for all the work you put into this blog. We’re all just a little agitated because of Phil’s great performance and then the cruel, surprising injury. Keep up the good work.
Good… Good… Hughes is learning to use the Pavano force well. I think he’ll find his paycheck will be QUITE cashable when it arrives.
In seriousness…. I use Giambi’s response to Karstens’ injury for Hughes’ injury. Aw !@#$%.
If Hughes doesn’t have a no-hitter going he probably doesn’t “reach back” against Texeira anyways.
you don’t have to apologize most of us know and understand that you hace other obligations than updating the blog every 5 minutes and that you can’t find out the good inside info until the team is off the field. Altough we may not see eye to eye on everything your hard work and dedication to this blog does not go unnoticed.
Slack shall be cut for you, Pete. Keep up the good work!
Man Peter, you are taking too much on yourself.
I really enjoy your blog and i like the insights that you gives us. Take your time and finish your good job~
Sox fan here.
I just want to say.. this sucks guys. Your ace was looking beautiful and you guys were clearly earnign the RIGHT to boast over us for a day. A no-hitter from your rookie and a blown save by Paps. It should have been YOUR day.
This sucks for you and I can not feel good about it. Indeed, I’m deeply saddened. Kid deserved more.
Pete—
Don’t sweat any comments from morons. Your blog is the best in the biz. Just ask yourself this question: Could someone else do it any better? From my own experiences with covering sports for a daily, I can honestly say no.
You gave us more on Hughes than any other site on the Web. Enough said.
Guys, I’ve got a random question…looking at the photos from tonight’s game, I noticed that Hughes had on one of the older versions of the official Yankees cap. This year’s version that’s supposed to wick away sweat is black under the bill. His is the traditional gray. Just a shot in the dark, but anybody know why he had on the old model? Just curious.
Dionysus, I hope you go two generations before winning another championship.
Dude.
Not gloating. Not crowing. I’m seriously offering my condolences. Please don’t misunderstand. I come in peace.
I’m a little shaky on hamstring injuries, is this the kind of thing that will nag the rest of his career or is the king of thing that it will be 2 months and he’ll be fine?
Still I don’t want to hear you all pitty us Yankees like we are defeated losers.
Pete,
Please ignore the haters.
Thanks.
Shut up, Gonzo.
Hardly. Your not defeated until the Seasons over. I don’t care if your entire satff came down with a rare virus from the Congo, I still will never fear comfrotable or secure agaisnt the Yankees. Heck I wrote a whole post about how you guys ALWAYS seem to find a way to kick our butts on this blog. I beleive I have compared the Yankees, recently, to the Killer from slasher flicks who, no matter the injury, ALWASY gets up again the moment the main character lets their gaurd done.
You’re not defeated. You’re not losers.
You’re the New York frakin’ Yankees.
As a Sox fan once wrote.. we all hate what we fear and thats why Sox fans hate the Yankees.
Who in the hell are you kurticus maximus? I am sick of all the Red Sox fans giving pity. It’s the last thing anyone who cares about the Yankees needs.
Another thing, Pete—
NOW will Cash fire or demote the strength/conditioning guy? This has become ridiculous. Bring in someone with more experience. Torre’s job should be safe. The guys paid to keep the players as healthy and conditioned as possible should be at the mercy of The Boss.
Your thoughts, please.
way to miss the ball on one of the biggest stories of the season pete.
Thanks Dionysus. Ignore all the bitter yankee fans that don’t appreciate other people’s complements.
Then don’t think of me as a Red Sox fan. Thgink of me as a fan of BASEBALL. Somethign we all are.
This isn’t pity. This is shared sadneess in a young promising pitcher gettign hurt. Its pitchers like him that MAKE Baseball fun. That MAKE the Rivarly exciting. That draw us to this sport. Philip Hughes pitching a complete game no hitter may hvae been bad news for the Sox.. but good news for the SPORT. Just like people like Cal Ripken were. Great accomplishments bolster the sport and its image.
If I were a fan of the Cubs, who have a Rivalry with the Cards, would I be ‘pitying’ of them if I offered condolences for the tragic death of Hancock? No. While this is certainly not as severe, I come in the same spirit.
Pete you got the best blog in the business. Hands down.
We just went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. There comes a point where even the most optimistic of us think “what else can go wrong here?”
On bright side its only 5 weeks and its nothing at all to do with the arm. He gets to save his arm so those innings get to be pitched in Aug and Sept.
And everyone knows he’ll be pitching valuable innings come July.
It really is the best blog out there. Changing the business, to be frank.
Don’t worry it Pete, this blog is best there is for Yankees Fan, keep up the good work !!
you didn’t owe anyone an apology or explanation, dude. if people can’t figure out what your job is, and your responsibilities are, then they probably won’t comprehend your explanation anyway.
This blog rules! I’ve scoured the net looking for something like this.
Anyone who’s blaming Hughe’s injury on the Yanks for bringing him up is not putting things in perspective. You can get hurt anywhere.
In the long run, this will be a minor bump in the road. You cannot say this wouldn’t have happened in AAA – nobody knows that. Besides, who would you have wanted to take the mound today? (Remember Ponson last year?)
Dionysus is a normal objective Sox fans, leave them alone.
and by alone, I mean treat them with respect.
hey guys—is one a “hater” if one disagrees with Pete? is there no place for respectful disagreement?
Pete—this kind of popular access to the media is the 21st century story: thanks for putting up with all of us….
You do a great job pete you don’t have to explain yourself to anyone. Deadlines have to be met it’s understandable.
btw
Thanks for providing me with the best yankee info on the net.
Like Jake said there is a dim silver lining to this. Now the Yanks can’t overwork Hughes’s arm during a pennant race in Aug Sept. Better his leg than his elbow.
It is a shame. We finally had one of those really exciting and dominant pitcher to watch. Something the Yanks haven’t had in a long time.
tonight was just such a drag. a microcosm of the yankees season so far; even when it’s good, it’s bad.
plagued by injuries.
mo’s blown two saves already, and looked awful doing it.
the bullpen’s burned out, and they’re blowing leads.
pettitte, who’d been the ace of the staff, absolutely imploded in boston.
abreu is suddenly lost at the plate.
you could go on and on. it’s just starting to look like one of those years we’ve seen other teams have so often. i know that it’s too early to predict anything, and i’m sure i’ll be taken to task for saying this, but i’m getting the distinct feeling that it’s just not meant to be this year.
Not going to take you task for it Kasey because I think you are right. The season so far has been a bit of a drag, even the good moments seem to get washed away quickly. That being said, isn’t this kind of what sports are all about? I mean, us Yankee fans have been spoiled for a number of years now. Although I would rather be in first place by 10 games running away with the division, I am curiously looking forward to seeing how this team deals with the adverse hand they have been dealt. It will be exciting to see if they can overcome all this and march on to October. My guess is that they will get healthy and they will hit their stride soon. I don’t know, as a fan it will be fun to watch our “underdog” team battle back against all odds to make the playoffs. The losing and tough times now are only going to make it that much sweeter for us at the end of the season. So my advice to all is too just have fun being fans and enjoy the season and the challenges for the team ahead.
On one hand, it was silly for people to be demanding information the second after Hughes left the game. On the other hand, this seems like such a condescending thing to write to the people who are providing so much traffic to this blog. The toxic relationship between Pete and a good number of bloggers is interesting.
Peter! Don’t apologize. If you want to, just think of the hysteria as evidence of how addicted everyone is to this great place you’ve made. There’s some of that in people’s ridiculous responses.
And many are just lame, so there’s that too.
Anyway, you’re great.
Rajah of Rehab,
Awesome post, intoning the Emperor from Return of the Jedi as some kind of weird alter-ego of Carl Pavano or whatever phantom is out to destroy this team. The first time I have seen that on this blog.
Hughes (to Pavano, around July 4th): Come with me!
Pavano: Joe Torre once thought as you do. You don’t know the power of the Rehab, I must obey Marty Miller.
Hughes: Search your feelings, Carl.
Pavano: It is too late for me, my Phil. Marty Miller will complete your training. He is your master now.
Hughes: Then our season is truly dead…
To be continued….
HAHAHAHA, nice Michael in Chi-Town. Dammit, why is Pavano so utterly useless.
Pete,
Could you ask Giambi what went through his mind when he saw Phil pull up lame?
btw. Doesn’t Cashman always look ashen? Like he’s seen a ghost?
Dionysus,
I hear ya brother, and as a Yankee fan I thank you for your condolences.
I agree with your perspective as well. I am glad you guys have such a powerful young closer like Paps. I’m glad you have as good a team as you do. There is no glory in beating a bunch of third-raters. I want the Sox to be an excellent team – and to play their best when they play us. Only then is there real satisfaction and a sense of accomplisment when we win. And only then are the games grippingly exciting.
So good luck, and I’ll buy you a consolation beer after the last game of the ALCS.
Peter is such a condescending hack who thinks too highly of himself. There is a reason Phil Hughes is the top pitching prospect in all of baseball. He has raw talent and works extremely hard. A player of his caliber that works extremely hard would absolutely try to bury a pitch while pitching a no-hitter in AAA. That is what future Rockets do.
You claim you aren’t a fan but a reporter. So then why are you so clearly Red Sox biased?
A guy like Kasey needs therapy. What a Debbie Downer you are.
Hughes proved why he is the best prospect in the game. And its a bummer hes out for a month but who here isn’t excited to see him back in June?????
Pete, keep up the great work.. Some people don’t realize that your job is more than hanging out watching games and updating the blog every once in a while.
No need to apologize, Pete.
