Shocking news out of Texas

Hold on to something before you read further …

Carl Pavano felt something in his right arm during his bullpen and shut it down after a few minutes. You have to hand it to the Rajah of Rehab, he’s consistent.

However the gritty, gutty Chien-Ming Wang threw his bullpen without any issues and will start Saturday. He had a cracked nail on his index finger.

Mike Mussina is good to go tomorrow.

Alex Rodriguez was the AL player of the month.

Meanwhile the storm clouds are gathering (as Dr. Ronan Tynan would say) and it’s raining in Texas. The game has been delayed and could well be postponed.

He probably was throwing off the mound, how many times must I tell him to only throw off flat ground.

  2. the lopper May 2nd, 2007 at 7:33 pm

not surprising about pavano … you pretty much getting used to expecting the worst out of that guy … with the amount of pitching that he has actually giving to the club over the past 3 season i wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out as one of the worst free agent signings of all time … good news about wang. if it gets delayed at least it gives the pen some more much needed rest

  3. Seth May 2nd, 2007 at 7:34 pm

    Carl never dissapoints, does he?

  4. MK May 2nd, 2007 at 7:34 pm

“They tried to make me go to rehab, I said NO NO NO!”

    - Carl Pavano via Amy Winehouse

  5. kasey May 2nd, 2007 at 7:34 pm

    laughable, man. ha.

  6. Ethan May 2nd, 2007 at 7:35 pm

Pitch through it. The worst that happens is he further “injures” himself and is out for the season, which will leave the team no worse off than they currently are. Just pitch through it. Torre should put him on the mound and not take him out till he’s thrown 90 pitches or his arm falls off.

  7. jennifer May 2nd, 2007 at 7:36 pm

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! What is wrong with this guy! I don’t understand this!!

  8. Ryan May 2nd, 2007 at 7:38 pm

Hey Pete, is there any precedent to telling him to stay away from the team for the remainder of his contract? Could they do that, or would the MLBPA throw a hissy fit?

  9. Stacey May 2nd, 2007 at 7:39 pm

    Auntie Em Auntie Em!

  10. SJ44 May 2nd, 2007 at 7:40 pm

    **Shaking head**

Safe to say, nothing should surprise us anymore when it comes to Pavano.

That “feeling” is nerves. He is probably freaking because the Yankees may have the audacity to actually want him to chip in and pitch right now.

At some point, and I fully realize its not my money, they just need to cut bait with him.

Get him off the 40 man roster and just move on.

Its borderline insulting to see him sit there every night, with the entire pitching staff crumbling, and he continues on his snail’s pace of rehab.

Just admit the mistake, eat the money and move on. I can’t imagine he has anybody’s respect in that locker room any longer.

  11. Kim May 2nd, 2007 at 7:40 pm

At this point, do you think Pavano’s just finding excuses not to pitch? Maybe he lost his “passion” for baseball.

  12. tonyb May 2nd, 2007 at 7:41 pm

Way off topic request, but does anyone know the tune that was playing during the YES coverage of Yankees Batting Practice?

    Good trance groove.

I don’t know what to say about Pavano anymore. It’s a lose/lose situation for everyone but him. Unbelievable. Just unbelievable. It’s a joke at this point. I know they’re all grown men, but I wonder how much his on-going saga plays on the emotions of the team.

  13. Hiding in Boston May 2nd, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Guess the Rajah felt the heat of DL competition from Phil Franchise’s injury.

  14. 2Yankees143 May 2nd, 2007 at 7:44 pm

On another note, is Jeter’s hit streak still in tact or did he lose it in one of the games against Boston?

  15. Khoa Le May 2nd, 2007 at 7:44 pm

Well…at least it was baseball related this time. Le sigh.

  16. Lori May 2nd, 2007 at 7:45 pm

The shocking thing is that some people actually thought he would be a contributor this year and a firm member of the starting rotation.

  17. jennifer May 2nd, 2007 at 7:48 pm

    Jeters streak is still intact.

  18. Wolf In Pinstripes May 2nd, 2007 at 7:49 pm

    They shoot horses, don’t they?

  19. Jamie CT May 2nd, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Hahah I agree Wolf, just put him down. It’s for the best.

  20. JDnotDrew May 2nd, 2007 at 7:56 pm

Well we know it wasn’t a pulse he felt in his arm. Either that or he is done. He needs to retire. What a waste of time and money. Maybe I’ll eat these words some day but I highly doubt it. What a BUM.

  21. Jeff NJ May 2nd, 2007 at 7:57 pm

Seeing Pavano in the dugout reminds of a useless Kenny Rogers waving the flag in the Yankees parade in 96. Whenever someone goes in the dugout, part of me is hoping he doesn’t touch any of the other players to pass on his bad luck.

  22. Joeysdadjoe May 2nd, 2007 at 7:59 pm

    Perception being reality Pavano sucks.

  23. Rey22 May 2nd, 2007 at 8:11 pm

    Unbelievable.

  24. Chris NJ May 2nd, 2007 at 8:12 pm

Nobody should be dissapointed in Pavano. I mean, seriously, we got INCREDIBLY lucky to have pitch 2 games in the past 2 seasons for us. He’s averaging 1 start per season in the last 2 seasons. For Pavano, I’d say that’s pretty darn good.

  25. Eric May 2nd, 2007 at 8:14 pm

    What a joke – what a fraud!!

  26. WeMissPaulie May 2nd, 2007 at 8:14 pm

Someon should explain the difference between “soreness” and “pain”. He thinks the two are the same.

  27. SJ44 May 2nd, 2007 at 8:16 pm

When you think about it, Carl Pavano may go down as being the worst free agent signing in baseball history.

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anybody who did less for his new team than Pavano.

Even Kevin Brown pitched more than Pavano.

That may be the signing that Cash will never able to recover from in his tenure as Yankee GM.

$40 million dollars for 2 starts in two years and 11 starts in his first year of the deal. Unreal.

  28. Samantha May 2nd, 2007 at 8:18 pm

Some women have day time soap operas…I have the Yankees.
Its never a dull momment any more.

  29. Ryan May 2nd, 2007 at 8:18 pm

    Ask the Braves about Hampton…..

  30. Cheng May 2nd, 2007 at 8:19 pm

    To jennifer:
come on! You can’t say that you’re really surprised to hear PavaNo winning about some imagining injury. can you?

this is got to a point where I’m way passed angry now it’s even comical.

  31. JDnotDrew May 2nd, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Whats the ETA of this game ,anyone know. Looks like rain will pass on weather channel site.

  32. al May 2nd, 2007 at 8:27 pm

Pete – We all saw how dominant Phil was last night? Wondering if you had a chance to talk to any of the Rangers players last night or today before the game? What did they think? I’d just be curious to see the quotes.

    Thanks

  33. Josh May 2nd, 2007 at 8:29 pm

I can’t imagine a Yankee ever making me as mad as Pavano does, it blows my mind. What a wuss.

  34. PavanoMVP May 2nd, 2007 at 8:36 pm

I think all of you are overreacting to Pavano. He wants to make sure he’s in tip top shape to help the ballclub. You don’t want to see a less than 100% Pavano on the mound do you?
Carl has run into a lot of bad luck.

  35. JCR May 2nd, 2007 at 8:42 pm

Come on man, there is no room for sarcasm here.

  36. Cincy Man May 2nd, 2007 at 8:44 pm

i think with pavano, it would help if we know exactly what was wrong. luck isn’t cutting for a answer. If he had bone chips…okay…if he has a torn rotar cuff….okay. Feeling some discomfort while thorwing a bull pen session, its just not good enough. I actually what pavano could bring, however, it is getting old with the injuries

  37. murphydog May 2nd, 2007 at 8:47 pm

    randy 1:

Saw your post on the other thread about the science of hamstring pulls. Very interesting.

As I see it, the challenge for the Yankees is whether they want to make something good out of this terrible start and commit to leading the league in the science of getting and staying in shape. They claim to be the best in every other area, why not this one?

Spring Training was a revolution in getting in shape for the season. But it doesn’t have to be the end of the story. With George’s money, the Yankees should take it to the next level and set the MLB standard for conditioning and strength and maintaining health through a season. There’s plenty of cutting edge sports medicine out there but it doesn’t come from a Bally’s Health Club. It’s a challenge that would appeal to George in a legacy sort of way.

  38. david May 2nd, 2007 at 8:49 pm

He should not be cut. That would be too good for the sob. But get him out of the clubhouse and dugout. To paraphrase John Dean, there is a cancer growing on this team and his name is Pavano. Exile him to some island with no electricty or running water or people and leave him there. Deliver his paychecks by parachute (so the union does not bitch) and let him contemplate all the things he is unable to buy. Really the Yankees have no choice– he will be appropriately verbally obliterated if he ever again takes the mound at The Stadium.

  39. tbeba May 2nd, 2007 at 8:50 pm

why can’t pavano’s hamstring be pulled???
    why hughes wang and mussina.
    that little bitch.

  40. murphydog May 2nd, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Does Carla Pavano have to be “disabled” for the Yankess to declare him a total loss and collect the insurance they have on the player? And if so, how disabled is “disabled?” Wasn’t there a similar go ’round about Mo Vaughn a few years back?

  41. Fan27 May 2nd, 2007 at 8:53 pm

    Who is Pavano?

  42. Johnny B May 2nd, 2007 at 9:15 pm

He seems to get along just dandy with the players in the dugout, what’s up with that? Does the fact that he’s thrown 10 innings in 2 years ever get brought up?

  43. jonathan May 2nd, 2007 at 9:17 pm

time to cut ties with pavano. When I heard Cash Money on with Kay the other day it was quite humorous hearing him actually say that none of pavano’s injuries were questionable. When Kay suggested to Cash that he order pavano to pitch, he bristled at the notion. Time to let this parasite attach to another host.

  44. Ron May 2nd, 2007 at 9:42 pm

Don’t compare Pavano to Kenny Rogers. Rogers actually pitched. Badly, yes, but at least he tried.

  45. Jason May 2nd, 2007 at 10:16 pm

Why oh why didn’t we trade this bum while some suckers had some interest in him this Spring??
If we had gotten some Low A ball pitchers, and a bucket of balls, we would have been WAAAAAY ahead of the game.
He is absolutely the worst signing I can remember, making the Steve Kemp and Ed Whitson signings look like winners.

  46. mpavone May 2nd, 2007 at 10:30 pm

leave my cousin alone you bunch of complainers , most you have a hard time getting your lazy asses to work when your healthy

  47. Gayle May 2nd, 2007 at 11:55 pm

Does anyone know Pavano’s contract status, is all his money guranteed? Dump him now and get insurance to pay whatever is left. I dont blame Cashman for the signing there were plenty of teams going after him hard icnluding the Sox

  48. Gloomy's Nemesis May 2nd, 2007 at 11:56 pm

I’m just waiting for the Yankees to announce that the Rajah is on the DL for an injured ovary. Let’s face it, the guy has got to run out of body parts to injure sooner or later.

  49. Eli May 3rd, 2007 at 12:04 am

Why is the title “Director of Performance Enhancement”. Is that not a poor title in baseball in this day and age. Worse than being in charge of Performance Enhancement, the acronym for it is: “DOPE”…..

  50. Potch May 3rd, 2007 at 1:21 am

I assume a lot of guys are too young to remember Andy Messersmith. Now THAT was a bad free agent signing.

Arguably, Don Gullett, since he was injured almost his whole time in pinstripes.

But the WORST F.A. signing ever?

Britt Burns. Three year deal, hurt in his first spring training, never pitched again.

  51. John Galt Jr. May 3rd, 2007 at 3:01 am

I think the Yankees should re-consider his actions last year and try to negate his contract. Either that or I want Pavano to be forced to pitch until his arms snaps and flies off like what happened to Dave Dravecky a few years ago. Miserable wuss. It disgusts me that I’ve contributed so much money to him- and even more so this year- at $145 a ticket!

  52. Dean May 3rd, 2007 at 5:59 am

Pavano is a JOKE, plain and simple.

  53. Glass Carl May 3rd, 2007 at 8:09 am

Trade this worthless piece for a BAG OF BP BALLS to the first taker.

Is there anyway we can end his contract early??

  54. farker May 3rd, 2007 at 8:37 am

WAAAAAHH im sore, take me hone, im cold waaaaahhh, could be a long season. I guess someones got to finish below the Devil Rays.

  55. Carl Sucks May 4th, 2007 at 10:28 am

The Yankees should just buy him out and dump him openly; press conferences and all complete with ESPN interviews. This guy needs to be:

    - Shamed in public
    - Banned from Yankee Stadium
    - His locker emptied

Let him find is own way to each road venue. This guy is just a plain albatross. Thank goodness this is his last year. Even Kevin Brown pitched and put forth an effort. Carl Pavano is the worst FA signing in the history of the Yankees. Perhaps in all sports!
