Update on Hughes

Had a chance to talk briefly with Phil Hughes today. He is not quite walking normally and obviously has some issues with his hamstring.

He will travel with the team back to New York and get an MRI next week once the swelling goes down. That will reveal a little more in terms of a timetable. But with hamstrings, timetables rarely matter. Every athlete is different. Given his value, the Yankees will be extra cautious and this will take a while.

Because Hughes felt a pop, he likely has a Grade 2 tear. Mussina and Matsui had Grade 1 tears. A full tear is Grade 3. Teams like to call hamstring injuries “strains” but that’s a euphemism. It’s a muscle tear.
