Here is the lineup, courtesy of Brian Heyman:

YANKEES
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreu DH
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Posada C
Cano 2B
Cabrera RF
Mientkiewicz 1B
Igawa LHP

Pregame chatter: The team didn’t have to report until 5 p.m., so there’s little action at this point. … Jason Giambi is out with what I have to assume are the leg cramps that knocked him out yesterday. … The K Man flew home yesterday before the doubleheader and should be well-rested.

    Peter,

Any Hughes updates at all? Did he have his MRI today? If so, do you know when?

  2. DC Yank May 4th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

I hope it’s just cramps with Giambi.

  3. beavis May 4th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

WHAT does torre have against Josh Phelps?!!!

  4. Doreen May 4th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Sitting in a plane for a couple of hours probably didn’t help Giambi any.

  5. csano May 4th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

    Who is the KMan?

  6. Jeff May 4th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

Doreen: Don’t charter flights like those the Yankees travel on have beds or couches available?

  7. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

I think Torre is looking to see if Doug M can actually be of some use for this team offensively. And to see if he can put a roll together at the plate.

And in his defense they havent faced a lefty in a long time.

  8. Stacey May 4th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

    Who’s Giambu?

    K Man is Kei, right?

  9. The Lady May 4th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Why is Abreu still batting third? Torre should have dropped him in the order.

  10. Doreen May 4th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

    Jeff -

I have no idea — never been on one. I know those tour buses have set ups like that, so maybe these charter planes have a “stretch out” section. Never thought about that. At the very least, they’ve got to have a LOT more leg room than commercial airplanes — even more, perhaps, than standard first class seating.

Okay, so, then if the plane is so comfy, why isn’t Giambi playing????? :)

  11. Get the Rocket May 4th, 2007 at 5:42 pm

Abreu will turn it around. I’m thinking he’ll go yard this weekend and it’ll get him out of this funk.

Looks like Dice-K and Kei’s ERAs are getting closer and closer.

  12. James Bond May 4th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

Group pray session scheduled at 6:55pm for the K Man.

  13. Nate May 4th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

Abreu shouldn’t be dropped. Just like A-Rod shouldn’t have been dropped in the ALDS. Although a day off wouldn’t hurt Abreu. Put Melky in right and DH Phelps. Josh only has something like 25 ABs this year.

  14. gayle May 4th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

Although I do not know the answer for sure I would imagine that the charter flights are not private planes as there would not be enough seats but actual commercial planes that have been privately chartered. A few years ago I had to charter a larger amount of people after an event and what we did was charter a plane from an airline.

  15. Chevy May 4th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

I agree……wipe the dust of Phelps already!!

Count me in on the prayer session for the k-man.

  16. ramar May 4th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

Torre’s so set in his ways. He won’t do anything that threatens his “comfort zone”. Rest Abreu. Start Phelps. Try using the BP guys in diff. order. Do something out of order?

  17. Al Rodgers May 4th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

    I’ve got it!

Abreu should legally change his name to Manny. Either that or Raul Mondesi.

  18. csano May 4th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

I had completely forgotten about Raul Mondesi.

  19. yankee21 May 4th, 2007 at 6:57 pm

I totally agree, what the hell does Torre have against Phelps?

Also, great move Torre, bring up Britton to pitch one game and then send him down immediately without pitching and instead continue to burn out V-caino, Bruney etc..

When will George become George Steinbrenner again and get rid of this guy?

  20. Tyson May 4th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

I thought the same thing about seeing Doug in at 1B. Where is Phelps! But then I looked in baseball-reference and saw that Dougie is hitting .538 with 9 extra-base hits in 28 plate appearances against Weaver….. Those are great numbers and that is a decent sample-size. We’ll see tonight if he remembers how to do it…

  21. Angel May 4th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

Some people are just so damn rude.

I guess the Internet makes them “brave”.

  22. Doreen May 4th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

    Thanks, Gayle.

  23. Larry May 4th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

Oh come on Peter, admit it, you were whining about being tired on your blog! No one wants to read that, they want to read about the Yankees.

Not to be rude, but how could you ever, ever complain about anything having to do with your job?

  24. Larry May 4th, 2007 at 7:16 pm

And you erase my thoughts. I’m just trying to get you to face the music.

  25. Jeff May 4th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

hey, can someone tell me what A-Rod’s walk-up song is?

  26. Wolf In Pinstripes May 4th, 2007 at 7:23 pm

Hey, nice shot by Abreu! Could he start to wake up tonight?

  27. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

    Abreu… wakey wakey my friend

  28. Wolf In Pinstripes May 4th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

I’ll tell you what Erick – that looked like a very natural and easy stroke on that hit for him. I’m going to predict that tonight is the night things start to turn around for him. I’m going to say 3 for 5.

  29. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

Tyson, I like your mind set, the only thing is that Weaver ain’t pitching tonight

  30. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 7:31 pm

Wolf, thanks for the tidbit, it’s killing me not beng able to watch my Yanks and those little flashes of the game are always welcome, helps me picture whats going on

  31. Fredrick Henry May 4th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

someone please hit a homerun so we can end this game here!

  32. Tyson May 4th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

Yeah, I just realized that. Sorry! Well, think Minky tomorrow as well in that case…

  33. Wolf In Pinstripes May 4th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

Oh, you’re quite welcome, bro. I understand. Until I got the mlb.tv package this year, I had to rely on gameday because I get to see maybe 10 Yankees games a year on tv otherwise.

  34. Al Rodgers May 4th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

    Melky! Melky! Melky!

MelkMan is on a teeear 5 for 9 in the past 36 hours.

  35. Hugh McHugh May 4th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Jeff arods ab music is “This is why im hot” by mims. Its a terrible song but a very funny choice by arod.

  36. stayalive May 4th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Unbelievable…the Mariners currently have a better record than the Yanks.

  37. Wolf In Pinstripes May 4th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Yeah, we don’t get to feast on Weaver until tomorrow. Looking forward to it, though. :D

  38. Wolf In Pinstripes May 4th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Hey, here’s Richie Sexson, who so many people thought the Yanks should pick up for first base. Hitting a whole .150 … makes Minky look like Tony Gwynn.

  39. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Wolf, how much does it cost? Is it per month of for the whole year? Can you get it anywhere in the world? How’s the reception, does it look cool?

  40. Al Rodgers May 4th, 2007 at 7:45 pm

    Hip HiP Hooor-Kei!!

Gotta hand it to Cash for landing Spider-K

  41. Wolf In Pinstripes May 4th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

There’s different packages, Erick. I think the regular one was 14.95/mo. I got the premium service, which is 19.95/mo. The extra five bucks is worth it, IMO. You can get any game that you want as long as it’s not blacked out because of a national or regional tv broadcast. The picture quality really isn’t that bad on the computer, but it’s not perfect. Oh, and you get access to archived games. Plus, with the premium package, you can watch up to 6 games at a time on the screen. I haven’t tried that out yet myself. As far as I know, you can order it from anywhere in the world.

  42. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

Man Weaver should give no opposition to the Yanks tomorrow, a gift for all the bull he gaves us while he played here

  43. jennifer May 4th, 2007 at 7:54 pm

Erick he is pitching for his job, he won’t do that. I just hope all the fans are all over him, get in his head!!

  44. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

It sounds pretty cool… if my money influx wakes up, I´ll sign up for it

  45. Brook May 4th, 2007 at 8:02 pm

The single by Ichiro to me was pretty incredible. When the ball is hit to the first baseman, he fields the ball cleanly, throws it cleanly, and the pitcher catches it cleanly, it almost never becomes a hit. The pitcher almost always beats the runner by a half step.

  46. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 8:03 pm

Back to the old ways for Igawa…This guy is BRUTAL!!!

  47. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Jennifer, I know… but don’t tell him… I have a hunch that if all those AL teams beat the crap outta him this Yankees are gonna spank him senseless

  48. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Looks like it could be a real slugfest at this rate…

  49. General Tsos Chicken May 4th, 2007 at 8:10 pm

Cano is such a poser when it comes to plate discipline. He’ll run the count to 3-2 like he knows what he’s doing then inevitably swings at the ugliest pitch of them all.

  50. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Definitely back to, “Bad Igawa” tonight.

But, as we are seeing with Dice-K, pitching here is a whole different game than pitching in Japan. Both guys are really struggling to adapt to this style of pitching and baseball.

You pitch from behind, and keep things in the middle of the zone, you get pounded here. A lot of the mistakes both Dice-K and Igawa make, you can get away with in Japan. Not here.

He is what he is. Hopefully, he can somehow survive 3 more innings without giving back the lead. If he can do that, he will have done his job.

  51. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 8:14 pm

Yeah, Cano definitely hasn’t carried over his hitting from last year.

  52. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

Seems like Igawa has thrown a first pitch ball to every hitter so far tonight…which is always a recipe for disaster. I wonder if his mechanics could be improved…Time for Guidry to do some work here!

  53. Nick M May 4th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Why are the games that are my9 always so horrible with the sound quality and tonight the picture quality too?

  54. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Now 5 extra base hits after getting ahead in the count 0-2 and 1-2.

Gotta get him out of there now before the entire lead goes out the window.

Too late. One hitter too late. A $46 million dollar waste of money.

  55. Ryan May 4th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

Gas can Igawa has a nice ring to it

  56. General Tsos Chicken May 4th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

Yeah Cano is predictable as is Igawa.

  57. Nick M May 4th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

we have some drama brewing here.

  58. matcohen May 4th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

anyone want a slightly used Japanese lefty?

    Price: cheap.

  59. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

    Cashman is an idiot.

  60. Ryan May 4th, 2007 at 8:23 pm

Wait, they think Igawa meant to throw at his head? He can’t even hit the plate.

  61. matcohen May 4th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

what’s the best sushi bar in Scranton PA?

    Do they serve banana-maki?

  62. R.B. May 4th, 2007 at 8:24 pm

    “Hip HiP Hooor-Kei!!

Gotta hand it to Cash for landing Spider-K”

Hand him what, a pink slip?

Igawa is just brutal. Seriously I’d rather watch Rasner than this fish out of water and his belt-high changeups.

  63. General Tsos Chicken May 4th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

I have no idea why any GM wastes money on starting pitching from Japan. Isn’t history enough of a lesson?? They ALL ALWAYS stink. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see this.

  64. Alfred May 4th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

    The Great Colter Bean :)

  65. DC Yank May 4th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

    Kei will be fine.

  66. Chris NJ May 4th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Is there any chance at all that Igawa isn’t sent to the minors after Torre takes him out of the game.

  67. matcohen May 4th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

  68. Ryan May 4th, 2007 at 8:28 pm

    Shavertown, how appropriate.

  69. Rudy May 4th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

i like the chin music to igawa seattle started sitting on pitches you got to make them uncomfortable good to see him go upstairs with one so the hitter can think about it

  70. Phil May 4th, 2007 at 8:30 pm

Is anyone else out there suffering through Dave Sims with me? He’s terrible. I hate guys that talk in hyperbole … how is John Sterling?

  71. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

46 million bucks for a long reliever. Basically, that’s his only role. He can’t start and he can’t be a lefty specialist.

How do you say “whiff” in Japanese? Cashman and crew really missed the boat on this one.

To give back a 5 run lead in under 3 innings to an awful hitting team wipes out his lucky outing Saturday.

This guy needs to be in Scranton and see if he can learn how to pitch in the States.

You just can’t keep putting him out there and watch this nonsense. I’d rather watch Rasner and DeSalvo than this.

Just because you spend 46 million doesn’t make the guy a good pitcher.

Colter Bean time, if I am the manager. You can’t run him out there for another inning. We have seen enough for the night.

  72. david May 4th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

let’s see. one in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth. anyone see a pattern developing? 10-6 after 5. pathetic.

  73. jennifer May 4th, 2007 at 8:33 pm

rudy my problem is it wasn’t on purpose. he couldn’t hit the side of a barn at that point. he is terrible and this is one of cash’s biggest mistakes.

  74. Nigel May 4th, 2007 at 8:37 pm

    Is Igawa Japanese for “horrific”?

  75. randy l May 4th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

i don’t think igawa meant to go up and in like that with ichiro. if he aimed there it likely would have went somewhere else. i realize this would be a counter intuitive thing to do , but i would try to leave igawa in for 120 pitches to try to get his command better. last year in japan ,he was often over 130 pitches per game. maybe he’s just not throwing enough to get in sync. i agree it’s hard to leave him in there when they are teeing off on him. why he keeps working up in the zone, in have no idea.

  76. Angel May 4th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

    good one, jennifer.

  77. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

This would be a nice time for A-Rod to rediscover his homerun stroke…

  78. Yankeefaninwooosta May 4th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

not a homerun but almost as good.

  79. Al Rodgers May 4th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

    First team to 10 wins!

  80. Rudy May 4th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

ill take a 2 rbi double

  81. donnie baseball May 4th, 2007 at 8:46 pm

    Dear Mr. Cashman,

    Please sign A-Rod

    Thanks!

    Common Sense

  82. Yankeefaninwooosta May 4th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

what ar ethe chances that Kei comes back next inning? how much faith does Torre have in this guy

  83. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Thank god we continue to score runs…although I’m pretty sure Igawa will give them right back if he goes out to pitch the next inning! Decent pitching is so hard to come by these days! (Sigh)

  84. Yankees in LA May 4th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

The problem is they have Rasner and De Salvo coming up and no off days for a long stretch. The bullpen can’t handle 4-5 innings for the foreseeable future.

  85. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

And thank god the Mariners’ pitching is just as bad (if not worse) as ours!!

  86. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

    General Chicken,

You have to take your chances, at least on guys like Matsusaka. Just wait until Yu Darvish becomes available, and ifYuki Saito decides to come straight to the MLB from Uni, man that’d be a great thing. He could go to the minors like any draftee and get used to pitching here before making the bigs.

I really like reading Plugh on guys like that, he is a great story teller, so who knows the chances of them panning out, but you have to take the risk.

  87. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

This is the dilemma Torre has right now.

Does he go to Bean and hope he can go 2 tonight, before he has to empty the ‘pen again to finish the game?

Or, does he risk another inning of Igawa?

Tough call, given that they played a DH last night and have two rookies going in the next 3 days.

One of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t moves.

As much as I hate it, he’s probably better risking another inning with Igawa and pray he only gives up 1 this inning.

  88. Yankeefaninwooosta May 4th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

good point Yanks Fan in LA
if torre has to go to hte bullpen too early it could be a very long weekend for them. the wang-enator better get it done tomorrow.

  89. matcohen May 4th, 2007 at 8:56 pm

Holy crap it’s football season in April.

When did the Yanks get a safety?

  90. Yankeefaninwooosta May 4th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

uhg they will be losing this game by a run any second….

  91. Ron May 4th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

Ugh. Cashman has made some dumb moves, in addition to his good ones, and Igawa looks like he might be one of them

  92. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

0-2 and he throws that crap curveball of his in the middle of the plate to Ibanez.

He’s lucky it just went for a single.

When this guy had no margin of error, he pitched out of his mind on Saturday.

With a margin of error, back to his norm.

Another crap outing from the 46 million dollar man. You wonder how much longer they can keep this guy on this team.

    He isn’t helping.

If they come out of this inning tied, its a plus.

  93. matcohen May 4th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

    halla freakin lujah

    Kei is an Igoner

  94. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:00 pm

4 pitch walk to a .150 hitter. Wonderful. I guess they teach pitchers in this organization to never throw the ball over the plate. Its tough to watch.

Now Bean is ready to crumble. They may have to pitch all 12 guys tonight to finish this one.

  95. matcohen May 4th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

this is going from bad to worse

  96. Global Warming(PTS) May 4th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Colter Bean is utterly terrible. Free the bean? More like throw it out.

Why is he on this team???

Britton should be on the team over him!

  97. Ron May 4th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

It baffles the mind that Colter Bean is in the majors but Chris Britton is not.

  98. JAM May 4th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Letting Igawa go for the 5th inning after blowing a 6 run lead, shows that Torre has lost any idea of how to manage the Yankees.

  99. Ryan May 4th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

8 straight balls? you gotta be kidding me. We’re opening the floodgates this inning.

  100. matcohen May 4th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

I dont have this on tv – I am in CA

    Are they playing tball?

  101. Ron May 4th, 2007 at 9:02 pm

No, actually, letting Igawa try was th best move to make. The bullpen needs rest.

And there goes the lead. This is utterly horrifying.

  102. Ryan May 4th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

The Mariners giveth, and the Yankee pitching staff taketh away

  103. General Tsos Chicken May 4th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

This bullpen is dreadful. Fire everyone. Christ oh mighty.

  104. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Nothing you can really say. Now we know how Devil Rays fans feel watching this nonsense.

Tomorrow, if Igawa and Bean are on the roster, this team isn’t going to leave last place for a very long time.

You can’t have crap like this on your roster.

Might as well leave this guy in there to give up 20 and save the ‘pen for the rest of the weekend.

Its a shame they couldn’t hold a 5 run lead tonight. But, its not worth killing the bullpen over this game.

Chalk it up as a loss and move on for tomorrow.

  105. Col May 4th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Which is the worst Yankee pitcher in recent years?
    -Igawa
    -Carl Pavano
    -Wright

There is really no way you can go with Igawa from that list. Stop whining about how bad he is and remember he needs time to adjust to USA baseball. When he does, Yanks are probably gonna have something between an ace and a #4 starter. He was darn good in Japan and he needs time to figure it out here.

  106. Global Warming(PTS) May 4th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

JAM, if Torre pulls Igawa before starting the 5th, the Yankee faithful would be crying that he’s burning the bullpen.

You know it, and everybody here knows it.

Sometimes you need to stop the blame game on Torre and look at the awful pitching we have on this team.

  107. Charlie May 4th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

    U
    G
    L
    Y

  108. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

So, those games against Texas were just a mirage…This team is still going nowhere fast…and the pitching hasn’t gotten any better.

  109. Charlie May 4th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

“Chalk it up as a loss and move on for tomorrow.”

Uhm, what? What a troll you must be, SJ44. It’s the fifth inning, and the Yankees are scoring runs at an equal pace.

  110. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Man, this is just too much, how can the M’S be manhandling the Yanks!!!

  111. Ryan May 4th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Guidry’s biggest concern is getting all those seeds in his mouth.

  112. Gibb May 4th, 2007 at 9:05 pm

    wow. that f’in sucked.

  113. Global Warming(PTS) May 4th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

    I say again.

Why is Colter Bean on this team???

I must have missed it but Britton is 10x the pitcher Bean will ever be.

I almost feel bad for Torre with this garbage pen he has to deal with.

  114. randy l May 4th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

noticed anibel sanchez of the marlins
was sent to the minors because he had a 4.80 era and a 2-1 record.
huh. he’d be a star with the yankees.

  115. Ryan May 4th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

Vizcaino out for mop up duty? how the mighty have fallen.

  116. sunny615 May 4th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

Ax Colter Bean bring back Villone

  117. Joseph Stambouly May 4th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

I guess the Colter Bean fan club is taking one on the chin tonight.

    Not exactly Torre’s fault tonight.

  118. sunny615 May 4th, 2007 at 9:07 pm

cancel that – trade in colter bean for a bag of chips.

  119. Ryan May 4th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

“Torre likes Bean because he can throw consecutive innings and consecutive days”
    -Michael Kay

    Oh really?

  120. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

I was all for giving Bean a chance but…

Britton should have stayed on and Bean sent down after the first game yesterday, I guess I now get why Torre has no confidence in Bean

  121. William May 4th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

one bad day so what?! yes it is dissappointing so pitchers who pitches bad always get demoted right away? Not everyone in the yankees are allstars

  122. Terry NH May 4th, 2007 at 9:08 pm

Honestly, don’t we all agree that Igawa should fine tool his command in Scranton??

  123. chazzh May 4th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Someone on here last week was trying to tell me Joe should’ve pitched Bean against the Red Sox instead of Proctor last week because he was ‘light-out’ in AAA.

Ladies and Gents- that is the REAL Colter Bean. DFA him to make room on the roster for DiSalvo. He does not need to pitch in the bigs again this year. He is awful.

  124. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Yeah, I must be a troll. They are going to Vizcaino now, why not burn him out, because Colter Bean and Kei Igawa can’t pitch one functional inning.

Yup, that makes me a troll.

Maybe I am a realist and I realize they aren’t going to win the game tonight so let’s not blow out the bullpen for the weekend.

Just leave Bean in there, let him give up 20, then get rid of him tomorrow. It makes no sense to burn out the entire bullpen for tonight’s game.

Sometimes, you just have to lose a game in order to put yourself in better position for the next couple of days.

Big mistake not having Britton on the roster. Tonight is Exhibit A of that mistake. Hopefully, that gets rectified tomorrow.

  125. chazzh May 4th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Igawa could probably use some seasoning- he has good stuff- tonight he was 94-95 with movement. Right now, he just can’t hit a spot. However, here is the problem- who starts in his place?

  126. Yanksmitch May 4th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Is Col short for Colter Bean? Your analysis of Igawa is pretty optimistic… normally Japanese pitchers are the one’s who batters need to figure out, not the other way around.

I’m not ready to dump Igawa yet, because he showed some promise (only one game but 40 million dollars deserves some time). But the bullpen is dreadful, which is really unacceptable considering we have no lights-out starters either. This team HAS to win games when the offense scores like today.

  127. Jenny May 4th, 2007 at 9:11 pm

    unbelievable..did anybody notice the 1 (2nd inning), 2, (3rd inning), 3 (4th inning), and 4 (5th inning) trend?
I hope the next inning is not 5..

  128. Yanksmitch May 4th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

So much for the trend. And Vicaino can’t even get the number nine man. What bullpen do we have to burn SJ? They’re already a consumed heap of firey ash as it is.

  129. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Here is a question for the blog.

Can anybody give a reason why Ron Villone, with a 2 ERA is still in Scranton and they have Colter Bean up here?

I think Villone showed he can pitch multiple innings in his career. At least he showed (before Torre blew him out) he can get outs in the majors.

Kind of tough to watch. For those scoring at home, Vizcaino has now allowed 15 inherited runs to score this season and its only May 4.

But, Villone and Britton languish in Scranton. What in the world are the Yankees thinking?

  130. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

I think its fair to say we’ll never see Colter Bean pitch in a Yankee uniform again.

    What a disgrace.

  131. sunny615 May 4th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

    an OUT!!!

  132. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

SJ44 isnt a troll. Hes just a Negative Nancy. Dont listen to him or you will just become discouraged with life. He’ll bring you down to his sublevel.

  133. Jenny May 4th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

    I don’t belive this. 1,2,3,4, and then 6? worse than I thought..

  134. Yeah May 4th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Igawa and Bean should be dfa’d immediately

  135. sunny615 May 4th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

    14 more to go… sigh.

  136. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

Holy crap we got an out!!! The Mariners must be worn out…they’re not used to taking batting practice for this length of time!! Man, it’s been a long time since the Yanks have had such putrid pitching.

  137. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

I can’t believe the Yanks finally get on a good vibe and WHAM the M’s become Murderer’s Row

  138. Joseph Stambouly May 4th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

SJ44 – I realize that you’re not a troll, but I would like to ask you a question. It’s still the fifth inning. We do have a good offense. Would you leave a pitcher, now Vizcaino, in to take one for the team and in effect write the game off, or go to someone else in the hope that we can come back and get a win out of it? In effect, would you give up a chance at a win to save the bullpen for the rest of the night?

  139. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:18 pm

Don’t insult Murderer’s Row! The M’s are still an awful team…The Yanks’ pitching is simply so terrible that it’s making them the M’s look good (which really takes some doing!).

  140. Yankeefaninwooosta May 4th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

i can’t see or watch the game, so please tell me how bad the Boo birds rain on the yankees when this inning finally ends.

  141. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Can we put Vizcaino in the same car with Bean and push them both off the nearest cliff? PLEASE!!!

  142. murphydog May 4th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

Not that he needs anyone to defend him, but SJ’s most definitely not a troll. I don’t always agree with him, but tonight, however, I’m going his way. Got nothing to lose from trying Villone and Britton.

Wait… I think that’s Miguel Cairo warming up in the bullpen…

  143. Yanksmitch May 4th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Jake– yes, the Yankees could come back an score a zillion runs to win this thing… but not likely unless Colter puts on a Mariner uniform. I think its hard not to be a negative nancy when you’re team can’t hold a 5-run lead and let’s Seattle score a dozen plus (make that FOURTEEN and coutinng now) runs. Just when you think the Yanks are getting on a roll they lapse back into this. Not fun to watch no matter what your disposition.

  144. randy l May 4th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

“Sometimes, you just have to lose a game in order to put yourself in better position for the next couple of days.”
that’s why i was suggesting leaving igawa in for 120 pitches no matter the score. we might lose the game , but it maight help straigten him out and also save the bullpen.
hard to know ahead of time ,but igawa wouldn’t have done any worse than bean and viscaino. my thinking is that igawa has to get straightened out or he’s going to be a long term liability. either let him throw 120 pitche here or he’s got to go dawn to scranton and do it. probably scranton.

  145. Yankees in LA May 4th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

I would prefer Ron Villone to Bean on this roster. Maybe I’m insane but he certainly can’t be worse.

  146. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Yeah, that’s me negative nancy. Good one Jake.

I guess you are impressed with what you are seeing tonight. Good for you.

Can’t blame Torre for this. He has 4 pitchers on the roster: Wang, Pettitte, Moose and Rivera.

He has a couple of other guys who are up and down: Bruney and Proctor.

The rest? Pure garbage. You can spin it all you want but watch the games. The rest of the staff is a joke.

Time to bring out the DFA notices and try 6 more guys. It really doesn’t do you any good to have to use everybody every night just to get through a game.

It is what it is and a big reason why they can’t get things going this year. Its a mess and its not going to clean itself.

Time to give others, like Villone, Britton and perhaps TJ Beam the next crack at it. Can’t be any worse than what we are seeing.

  147. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Let Josh Phelps pitch…At least then he’ll get to play (and he can’t do any worse than our so-called relief pitchers)!

  148. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

OMG this is just un fing believable… the stars just had to align themselves tonight for utter humliation… PLEASE let Weaver taste this tomorrow

  149. Yankeefaninwooosta May 4th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

11 men to the plate……1 out!!!!for the love of god!

  150. sunny615 May 4th, 2007 at 9:23 pm

i still think the yanks can win this game

  151. Yanksmitch May 4th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

i still think the yanks bullpen can give up more runs

  152. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

Watch Weaver throw a shutout tomorrow…that would be the capper! Maybe then we’d start to see some changes on this team…and I’m not talking about Torre…I’m talking about all this garbage on the field that is disgracing the Yankee uniform.

  153. Al Rodgers May 4th, 2007 at 9:25 pm

I think the scoreboard is broken. There’s an extra digit on Seattle’s tally – it shows 14 instead of 4

Btw, who’s our Field Goal kicker??

  154. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

A-Rod is the field goal kicker, of course!

  155. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

No, I wouldn’t have Vizcaino be the “take one for the team” guy because he is struggling big time, hasn’t been right in 3 weeks, and is the wrong candidate for the job.

It should have been either Igawa or Bean.

Those should have been the “take one for the team candidates.

Igawa not holding a 5 run lead is aggrevating but, hardly surprising to me. However, having a guy like Bean on the roster, with Villone and Britton in AAA, makes no sense to me.

Igawa? If Matt DeSalvo pitches well, Igawa has to go to Scranton to see if they can salvage anything out of him.

Villone needs to be on the roster and I’d give Tyler Clippard a start before I roll Igawa out there again.

What they are doing clearly isn’t working. So, try something different.

On another front, for you Rangers fans (like me), Straka just scored and the Rangers lead Buffalo 1-0 with 2 minutes left in the game!

  156. nyyfaninlaaland May 4th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Ok, now they kick to us, right?

  157. Yanksmitch May 4th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

The only real optimism I have is that things could turn around once Moose is at full strength, Hughes returns to finish his no-hitter, and the Rocket appears in full pin-stripe glory. If all those things happen we might have a chance this year, but not if we can’t at least tread water for now.

  158. YanksFanLV May 4th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Igawa will contribute, just not yet, his numbers from Japan were great, I say option him to AAA and let him find whatever it is he needs to find. The ‘feet to the fire’ approach isn’t helping here. We all saw what he IS capable of last weekend, just has to find the consistency.

Oh Yeah, and leave Vizcaino in until his arm falls off, no point in buring the pen tonight.

  159. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Man I want the rocket back Yanksmitch, but with the way this team is going and how Boston is playing, you can’t help but think the Rocket would rather be there 5th man

  160. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

SJ44, you’re NEVER impressed by what you see. You can find wrong in anything the team does.

Thats why you’re a Negative Nancy. You cant even say good things about A-Rod. You go into the opt out clause and his previous years blah blah blah

  161. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Ok, Jake. Just to make you happy, I will something nice about tonight.

    Great weather for a ballgame.

    Happy now?

If you are looking for a cheerleader, find somebody else. That ain’t me.

Sometimes, the truth hurts Jake. Blowing a 5 run lead to a bad baseball team and giving up 14 runs in 5 innings is not exactly “positive”.

But, if you think it is, good for you.

  162. Al Rodgers May 4th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Vizcaino left the game? I hope its just cramps.

  163. Al Rodgers May 4th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

    just great.
boston is up 1-0 in the sixtth
    Ancient Wakefield has 2.19 era

  164. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

    Folks, stop getting on SJ44.

He is talking sense, and given the situation it is sounding bitter.

This inning (6th) is the key for this game. Yanks have to score at least 2 runs to make it a game and have a chance to win. Forget it, doulbe play killed any chance.

If not, then Joe has to show how good a manager he is. So far, no blame on him. It is the palyers who stunk.

Now, if the game is out of hand, that is when he has to manage the bull pen well, sacrifice someone and not burn every one…..

Let us see if Joe is a genuis or clueless.

  165. Captain521 May 4th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

Igawa is worse then any of the rookies that the Yanks have thrown out there this year. He should be in AAA. Baseball in Japan must be like pitching in single A here, more waste of money for Cashman.

  166. JAM May 4th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

OK, we´ve seen enough. Now George´s turn.

  167. Captain521 May 4th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Time for Bean to go back to AAA where he belongs. Get rid of mop up man Myers, he cant get lefties out or be trusted. Bring up Villone before he opts out of his contract and signs with another team. He cant possibly be any worse then these 2.

  168. JAM May 4th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Anybody has some idea of what is the job description of such an invisible guy named Randy Levine?

  169. gayle May 5th, 2007 at 10:43 am

Glad to see everyone yelling for Villone. Where were you during Spring training and wanted him cut from the team ASAP
