Wow, this is a disgrace

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 04, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I’m listening to the game on the radio and it sounds like John Sterling wants to throw himself out of the booth.

My buddy Mark Feinsand of the News spends the fifth inning on the air as part of a promotion. He has been on the air for about 30 minutes now and is reading stats. I was waiting for him to start saying hello to members of his family.

I would think we’ve seen the last of Colter Bean. Ron Villone, come on down.

By the way, the Yankees will get the tying run to the plate in this game. Just watch.

    Pete-

I disagree. My bet is Seattle shuts down the Yanks from here on out, while scoring some more runs of their own.

  2. Khoa Le May 4th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

sigh…at this point, i’d call up to the booth and see if leiter would like to put on a uniform. that was deflating.

  3. Keith R.A. DeCandido May 4th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Wouldn’t it make more sense for this to be the last we see of Luis Vizcaino? Bean’s barely had any kind of chance in the majors. I’d much rather see Vizcaino demoted and Chris Britton — who actually has done well in a major-league bullpen — brought back.

  4. Brandon May 4th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Pete this is why you don’t use a weakened bullpen in the 5th , 6th 7th and 8th inning last night and he should have just let Igawa finish this game, this has to be the worst managed bullpen in baseball history and they’re not going to realize it until it’s too late. P.S. I see a spush for Rich Harden coming soon.

  5. Anthony May 4th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Colter Bean should NEVER see a major league mound again…at least not as a Yankee. He is your typical AAAA player.

Tying run to the plate? I highly doubt that.

  6. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

No, they won’t. But, that’s baseball.

However, if Kei Igawa and Colter Bean are on this roster tomorrow, somebody needs to get out in front of the cameras and explain to Yankee fans why that is.

Its a joke those two guys are on this roster.

  7. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Alright O’Flaherty! Oh, yeah, he doesn’t pitch for our team. Knew it was too good to be true…

  8. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Why is Meyers pitching now?! Give it up, Joe! Rest what’s left of the bullpen, will ‘ya?!!!

  9. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Relax, Negative Nancy. No one was saying anything last saturday when Igawa shut out the Sox, right?

Its like clockwork. Anytime during a loss the same few come out of the woodwork to bash everything. Team, players, Torre, you name it.

Why are you even a Yankee fan SJ44? You act more like a Cubs fan.

  10. Yanksmitch May 4th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

I guess it doesn’t matter who we run out there anyway since everyone is worthless. This is like a circus freak show.

  11. Brandon May 4th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Keith R.A. DeCandido I’ve seen Vizcaino pitch he’s worned down I’ve been saying this for days now. Vizcaino is not this bad.

  12. Ben from boston May 4th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

colter bean sucks i am now watching the dodgers and braves thank god im on the first floor incase i jump out the window

  13. Colorado Yank May 4th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

So much for turning around the season. 3 game sweep means nothing… This team just sucks. This bullpen is going to be completely exhausted by the All Star break.

Question, isn’t the object of the game to throw a strike???? I am watching the gamecast on MLB and there is this square that I assume is what a strike zone looks like?

    Help???????

  14. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

Somebody is actually trying to defend Colter Bean?

This isn’t little league. You don’t get a “chance” because its the rules.

He stinks. He has always stunk but, for some reason, some Yankee fans think he can pitch.

He can’t throw the ball over the plate and can’t get outs.

So, he gets “another shot”? I guess you like being in last place if you want to see Colter Bean again.

Here’s what they need to do:

Send Igawa to AAA and call up Tyler Clippard to take his spot in the rotation. If they are going to get anything out of this guy, he has to learn how to pitch in the states. Can’t do that in the Bronx.

After Rasner’s start, call up Chris Britton.

DFA Bean IMMEDIATELY and call up Ron Villone.

Put Vizcaino on the DL to get him some rest (and see if that helps), and call up TJ Beam.

Those would be the prudent moves.

The dumb moves would be to do nothing and give the guys who can’t pitch “another chance”. We have seen enough. They can’t pitch. You don’t have to see it again to know that.

  15. Global Warming(PTS) May 4th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

Hey Peter why is Britton in AAA?

This guy is a proven AL East pitcher.

Why Bean was ever on this team beats me.

  16. chazzh May 4th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

SJ44- Bean will be gone. The problem is you have to keep Igawa- unless you thought is to leave Rasner in the rotation also. DeSalvo is replacing Hughes- so someone would need to replace Igawa too.

To me- that is also the only reason Bean is here instead of Villone- since that ‘extra’ arm would have to be moved out on Sunday for Rasner and then Rasner dropped for DeSalvo on Monday……

That is all I can think of.

  17. Brandon May 4th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

speak for yourself Jake when Igawa pitched that gem I remember a few wgo were on both sides I said that start shouldn’t have saved Torre’s job , same thing keeps going instead of letting a SP fall on his sword he kills what’s left of our bullpen.

  18. chazzh May 4th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Myers is the quintessential ‘take one for the team guy’. Since he could probably throw 4 innings and still pitch to Ichiro in a tough spot tomorrow.

  19. Colorado Yank May 4th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

By the way Pete, telltale sign, Jeter is hitless with some good swings. Yankees will lose this one 16-10.

This Yanks team does not have the comeback in it tonight.

  20. Brian S. May 4th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

somehow i came into this game thinking we had already seen our pitching at it’s worst. but tonight’s display takes the cake. absolutley disgusting.

i thought i could feel better when the Rangers scored with 3:20 left in the 3rd period to go up 1-0 in game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Sabres. 7 seconds away from taking a 3-2 lead in the series going back to Madison Square Garden, what happens? They let the Sabres tie it.

    7 seconds.

Oh yay now i can go back to the Yankees game. Fun night for New York fans!

  21. Rudy May 4th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

chicago dave myers is pitching because he can go more than one inning who would you use myers can give then length. I think he volenteered to eat some of these innings so maybe it would be possible to get back in the game if possible

  22. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

They need to send Phelps down (or out) and get another arm up as this is all hands on deck with this pitching staff.

  23. jennifer May 4th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

I went to the grocery store to do a small shopping came home and they were still in the same inning. how pathetic is that. LOL

  24. Eric May 4th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

    Pete – suit up!!! Please!!!

  25. csano May 4th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

Is it possible for the Yankees to completely cut ties with Igawa and not have to pay any of his salary? Or are they stuck with him for the duration of his contract?

  26. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

Villone and Britton should be driving to the Bronx about now and drop the car off for Bean and Phelps to shuttle back to Scranton in..

  27. jennifer May 4th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

At what point do we conceed this game and not use our best guys?? Although Joe brining in bean or beam looks like he may have already conceeded. LOL

  28. William May 4th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

giving up on igawa already? so losing faith in a pitcher that ppl were priasing last week for saving us against boston? How is team chemistry gonna be built if players are removed quickly for doing bad.

  29. Ben from boston May 4th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

i keep feeling like ill wake up any minute and itll still be the off season and the yankees have signed lilly. it was all just a nightmare!!! and pavano was still a devil ray. oh the dreams we have :(

  30. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

Csano…yea maybe they held onto their receipt…perhaps if Cashman checks his wallet the Pavano, Johnson and Brown receipts are somewhere in there too…

The Yanks are stuck with this guy, maybe he can run errands for Matsui…

  31. jennifer May 4th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

We can’t bring Britton back up. He was just sent down, unless Igawa comes up with an “injury”

  32. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

It’s a telling sign when the Yanks have to “concede” a game in which they scored eight runs…and I agree, Jennifer, they do have to concede this game!

  33. Brandon May 4th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Brian S. thanks for the update damn LETS GO RANGERS just bring it back to MSG 3 – 2 we’ll make sure Buffalo’s players mind will never be the same again. All MSG got to do is stay loud.

  34. Brian S. May 4th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

I think Igawa just needs to be in the bullpen. problem is who the hell is gonna replace him in the rotation? i don’t suppose it matters who, because no matter who joins our rotation they can’t seem to string together back to back solid outings.

  35. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

The mighty O’Flaherty shuts down the lineup after the battle of Korea and Japan dissolved into extended BP

  36. Peter Abraham May 4th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Myers can pitch alld ay every day. His motion puts no stress on his arm. Calm down about that.

As for yesterday, what part of Mike Mussina asked out of the game do people not understand? He was too tired to continue. What did you want Torre to do?

  37. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

    Jake,

You are one funny guy! Igawa has pitched well in ONE game this year. That’s it.

Ever hear the expression, “catching lightening in a bottle”? That’s what he did last Saturday and nothing more.

How has he done his last two starts Jake? Tampa Bay and Seattle?

    8 total innings 16 hits 10 runs 5 walks, 1 HBP.

Very, very impressive. Good thing they spend 46 million on him and kept him away from other teams!

You think Joe Torre is happy that this guy couldn’t hold a 5 run lead and he has somebody like Colter Bean on his roster? Give me a break.

If you can find positives of this night, more power to you.

But, I am hardly alone in this blog tonight being unhappy about what I am seeing.

But, keep cheerleading, Kei Igawa needs it.

    Chazz,

They have a tough call to make on Igawa. I realize its probably tough for them to admit a mistake on him this early in the season.

But, I guess the question is, how many more times do they run him out there? He just doesn’t seem to be able to get the job done as a starting pitcher right now.

JMO but, he needs to be at Scranton and they should give Clippard the next shot in the rotation. I mean, how much worse can it be than what we are seeing?

I can’t imagine Torre is going to have much confidence in the guy much longer.

They can’t live on one lucky performance on Saturday forever. At some point, if the guy can’t get the job done, try somebody else. Just seems to make sense to me.

  38. Colorado Yank May 4th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

What is Cashman’s email address? This is just horrific.

I have not been this embarassed to be a Yankee fan since 1990…Where is the Pride of the Yankees?

By the way, did anyone hear Cashman’s comments on the Michael Kay show? He was pretty upset that no one thinks Pavano is serous with his injuries. Was pretty funny. For 49 mil, I could have pitched for them and at least would have been out there every day.

  39. Jeff May 4th, 2007 at 9:50 pm

If Igawa and Bean are on this team tomorrow, I am going to seriously doubt that Cashman realizes this team is completely GASSED, and needs fresh arms who can log innings.

  40. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

Brian…Igawa and his soft toss cheese left up and over will get him smacked from the bullpen as well….

  41. Angel May 4th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

LOL ashamed to be a yankee fan?

  42. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

    Pete-

You still think they’ll get the tying run to the plate?!

  43. Colorado Yank May 4th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Wait take that back…. final score 18-9 Seattle.

  44. jennifer May 4th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Pretty soon we won’t have any starting pitchers at Scranton. LOL They will all be up here.

  45. Keith R.A. DeCandido May 4th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

Phelps can’t be sent down. He’s a Rule V pick, so he has to stay on the major league roster, or they have to give him back.

And they need Phelps for when Torre finally realizes that Doug Mientkiewicz is killing the team — which probably won’t happen if/until the pitching settles down……..

  46. Brian S. May 4th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

and the Rangers blew game 5. and the Yankees continue to suck.

  47. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

this lineup puts up an 8 spot and proceeds to lose by 10…they will be 12 out by Memorial Day….hopefully Steinbrenner is packing his defibrillator for the next trip to the Bronx….

  48. Sad Mike May 4th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Such a shame that hughes, sanchez, karstens, and pavano are out. It’s time they called up clippard, britton and olendorf. Demote Igawa, Forget about DeSalvo- he throws way too many BB. Arrrghhh. Will Clemens Plllleeeeaasseee rescue us?

  49. Brandon May 4th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

    dammit the Rangers lost 2 – 1

    GAME 6 at MSG

  50. KT May 4th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Jennifer if you dont know the last name of a reliever than quit laughing out loud and look it up instead.

  51. Joe Monteforte May 4th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Fire Cashman and elect Gene Michael as the acting GM. I’m tired of Cashman’s attempt of building a staff and bullpen over the past few years. We killed Torre for weeks but it’s Cashman who’s responsible for having these guys pitching.

  52. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

SJ44, getting back to my point why are you a Yanks fan?

All your negativity can better be directed by being a Cubs fan. You never have anything positive to say about anything.

You’re the guy who called for Mariano to be pulled as the closer after two blown saves.

I’m ashamed you even call yourself a Yank fan

  53. Stef May 4th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

I’ve also found it puzzling why Bean is such a pet of Joe’s He’s never pitched well when he’s been up playing in the majors, and typically can’t even find the darn plate. What’s the deal with Joe and Colter Bean?

  54. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Keith…I forgot about the Phelps Rule V deal…that extra 1B is keeping another arm off the roster and they could use it.

  55. William May 4th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

sj44 – you’re ruining the game of baseball, you a fan have to point out every single negative thing about the team we enjoy watching?let me tell you baseball doesn’t revolve around the Yankees. it’s either we win or lose, it would be pointless to watch baseball if we win everytime.

sure, im disappointed about tonights game but i don’t need to go on a rampage about sending guys down and get rookies up to replace crappy stat players.

  56. Sally May 4th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

    hey Pete,
Why do you think they’d call up Villone instead of Clippard?

  57. Colorado Yank May 4th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

    Pete,

Seriously, we all understand this is not Torre’s fault but as an organization nothing has been done to improve the team. This summer was not about putting together a winning team but rather to slash payroll so Brian can be more in line with the rest of the teams. The problem is that other teams picked up players that are performing, other organizations seem to be able to bring kids up from the minors with consistent success. Other organizations seem to be able to absorb bad performances by a pitching staff. This team and organization cannot and have not.

There are three things that are wrong with this team:

    No pitching
No 1b back up, back up catcher, no bench
No “fight”. Did you see Golden State devour Dallas? No way that should have happened, but Golden State “wanted” to win. Yanks do not, regardless of what is said.

  58. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

Bad night all around. The Rangers were 7 seconds away from a win and we got stuck watching the Kei and Colter Show in the Bronx.

Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

  59. Paul Calta May 4th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

I am sorry for all you optimists out there but I have given up on this team. They are truly horrific. A couple of questions:

Did anyone scout Igawa? He is no major league pitcher, any moron can see that.

How over rated is Brian Cashman? He gets an open checkbook and this is the team that he puts together.

It is going to be an ugly season.

  60. YanksFanLV May 4th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Pete, If you hadn’t predicted the Giambi homerun last night I would say that you are crazy for saying that they Yanks will bring the tying run to the plate. I’m with you buddy.

  61. Ron May 4th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Yeah, let’s blame Cashman for falling victim to the randomness of major league relievers. I don’t think anybody predicted the bullpen would be this bad. In fact, on paper, it looked like one of the best in baseball. What else is Cashman supposed to do, see into the future?

  62. R.B. May 4th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

There’s still a chance Igawa can develop into a productive pitcher, but one way he WON’T do it is to continue to throw belt-high junk, which apparently is a hell of an “out” pitch in Japan but is batting practice here.

He’s going to need to learn to pitch down in the zone. That’s a lesson best learned in Scranton.

  63. chazzh May 4th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

    SJ44-

I hear you and I think I agree with you- but rather than Clippard- why not let Rasner take a few turns. The thing with Igawa is- I can see what Cash saw in him. I choose to think (maybe I am just being a fan) that the Igawa that pitched those 6 innings against the BoSox- wasn’t just luck- but rather the potential he has. Now, they just need to harness it. I heard Guidry talking one day about the fact that Igawa cannot ‘repeat’ his mechanics two pitches in a row (which leads to his erratic location). Obviously in Japan he could get away with it (i think they also have much larger strike zones) but here – he needs to be more consistent. Regardless- anyone who does that against the Red Sox has value to the Yanks. So maybe- send him down for a start or two and bring him back for that next Sox series?

  64. Ron May 4th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

The venom coming at Cashman is laughable. These are the same fans that screamed at him for not getting Freddy Garcia, who’s been socked around in the National League this year. The Yankees have had horrible luck with pitching injuries, and Torre’s compounded it by needlessly using the bullpen instead of allowing his starters to give him length.

  65. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

    Give up on this team???

    Are you F-ing kidding me?

    Its May Freaking 4th!!!

We were out by 4 games on July 5th last yr and won by 11!!

How do you call yourself a fan if you give up after one loss and 25 games? Where were after the Texas sweep?

What a joke. Please. if you give up Get the F Out of here so we dont have to be subjected to constant negativity and BS.

The real fans support and dont give up because a 5th starter and a triple A pitcher got shelled.

  66. Ron May 4th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

Heh. Let’s send Phelps away. Riiiiiiight….

  67. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

R.B. a $50m Scranton Yankee is not what they ordered with this guy…he will rot in the bullpen for 4 years as a mopup spot starter type….

  68. Ron May 4th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

They are winning this game. I’m feeling it.

  69. Sad Mike May 4th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

    Whoo HOoh!!!
We can come back- only 4 runs down!

  70. Nigel May 4th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

and Johnny Damon with the field goal!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  71. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

I think we can all agree that Cash messed up by taking Igawa over Lilly.

Thats pretty obvious. A lefty who had proven success in the Al East and wanted to pitch in NY.

Those guys dont grow on trees.

  72. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

Bean will be sent down tomorrow and a fresh arm will be brought in for the bull pen. It will not be Villone though he will be a third lefty…

Regarding Igawa, I believe he will be sent down to Scrantion to work on control. But it will not be tomorrow. They will show respect and send him down on Sunday when Rasner comes in.

I still think Igawa will make it in the majors. He needs to improve his control which he can work on in AAA.

  73. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

I SMELL COME BACK!!! The Phelp man comes through and Damon awakens from his slumber!!!

  74. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

    One rule

    Never doubt Pete’s psychic abilities

And dont talk about fight club

  75. Brian S. May 4th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

there is no one to blame, really. i mean how can you blame anyone person for so many people not performing? i blame the players. they all suck right now, but perhaps they’ll get better. Cashman has tried just about every conceivable approach to improve this pitching staff since 2003, signing fairly young free agents with success, signing veterans, bringing guys up…not his fault NOTHING works out. it’s really quite ridiculous. i can’t explain why no pitcher can come to the Yankees and perform consistently over the past few years.

  76. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

So, the choices of Pavano, Wright and now Igawa (not to mention the ever-injured phenom Humberto Sanchez) were all cases of “bad luck”? Now THAT makes me laugh!!! Cashman has made some very bad choices…Deal with it.

  77. Paul Calta May 4th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Negativity? I would call it realistic thinking. Negativity is turning on the tube and watching such a crap team. Maybe we are spolied being Yankees fans, always expecting to win and all. But the way baseball is structured they should be good every year. It is not bad luck that they are playing the way they have. The cause is poor decision making, poor managing, poor scouting, and sub-standard baseball.

  78. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Abreu, Damon and Matsui hitting is great to see….

  79. YanksFanLV May 4th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

    Man Jeter needs a hit.

  80. Colorado Yank May 4th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Looks like the Orioles are having pitching trouble. Good to know we are not the only troubled team.

  81. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Myers is really doing a team thing right now. A big bright spot in an otherwise terribly pitched game.

Saving the pen something Igawa had to do.

  82. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Why is Phelps riding the bench again?! Come on Joe, give the kid a chance! Minky just isn’t doing it for us…

  83. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

    Chicago Dave…

hold on…you forgot Randy Johnson (over signing Beltran) and Kevin Brown…those were good investments as well

  84. SJ44 May 4th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

    Chazzh,

I can live with Rasner getting a few turns. IMO, the only reason why they would stick with Igawa at this point is the money involved. That should be the wrong reason to keep someone in the rotation.

He can’t repeat his delivery and he can’t learn that on the job in NY. Its best served being done in Scranton. If it can be done at all. Which, let’s be honest, is a big question mark right now.

I fully realize the egos involved though and that also probably plays into the decision.

I hope, behind the scenes, Torre nixes another turn for him in the rotation. One good outing isn’t enough to give him another shot. Not after tonight.

Torre got him out of the rotation after the Tampa debacle. This was Tampa x ten. He has to get him out of there and if Rasner is the next guy on the list, fine by me.

Amazing. Score 11 runs tonight and they still need 5 more to win a game. Just not acceptable. Not against this team.

  85. Mac May 4th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

Mike Myers is a damn hero considering what he’s doing for this team, especially in comparison to his past history of use. Like seriously, way to earn your money man. Awesome. If I had a drink around to pour out for him, I would.

  86. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

    Paul Calta,

    How is giving up realistic?

On May 4th? You cant be serious. Or you’re not a Yank fan. What baseball season was over on May 4? Check last yr. How did the Twins do after June?

How did the Yanks do in 2005 after their horrendous start? And that team didnt have half the talent and the farm system this one does.

Can we let Andy, Wang and Moose pitch in rotation a few times before we throw in the towel?

You can give up but 99% of us will laugh at you come the summer. But dont worry. theres always room on the bus for front runners.

  87. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

“Looks like the Orioles are having pitching trouble. Good to know we are not the only troubled team.”

The Orioles are probably one of the few teams that are as clueless (if not more so) about how to pick decent pitchers. After all, they were dumb enough to give the Yanks a warm body in exchange for Jaret Wright!

  88. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

In the past many questioned why Myers is on the team.
I guess now every one appreciates him.
He is the only effective pitcher today.
He was supposed to be one lefty batman pitcher, but he is pitching a shutout and giving Yanks a chance to come back.

  89. R.B. May 4th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

“R.B. a $50m Scranton Yankee is not what they ordered with this guy…he will rot in the bullpen for 4 years as a mopup spot starter type….”

So because they spent a ton of money on him, they should let him “rot in the bullpen” rather than attempt to take corrective action? That makes no sense.

  90. Joe May 4th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

    The Yankees will win today

  91. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

I wouldnt mind Mr Bedard pitching in pinstripes.

Heck, at this point I wouldnt mind Mrs Bedard pitching in pinstripes.

  92. chazzh May 4th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

How about Myers in the rotation next turn- Bring up Villone to be the second lefty. He is getting righties out this year.

    We could/have done worse.

  93. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

    BX 12 Fordham Road-

Great point about Beltran…Cashman REALLY missed the boat on that one. As for Kevin Brown, I think he’d claim that that deal was done before he was really “in control” – i.e. he’d probably put that one off on Steinbrenner.

  94. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 10:16 pm

R.B…..see your point but had assumed that $50m would buy you a major league pitcher these days…

  95. Paul Calta May 4th, 2007 at 10:16 pm

    Jake;

I am a fan. I may be overly negative right now but I have a bad feeling about this team. I hope you are correct and I am wrong. I would love to have you laugh at me come July. If you ARE correct about this team, I will eat my fair share of crow.

  96. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 10:16 pm

OK, I was wrong to question bringing in Myers. Heck, if they had brought him in one inning sooner, we would have had a chance to win this thing!

  97. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

If you’re going to bash Cashman you have to give him credit for the moves hes made. Like Chacon. Like Bruney. Like Small.

And you cant blame him for every decision pre-2005 because it wasnt him making those calls.

You can bash him for Igawa for sure.

But I’ll tell you this. 30 teams would love to have Farnsworth coming out of the pen.

  98. tonyb May 4th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

Maybe we SHOULD let Myers pitch all day every day? Well, except for when Moose, Pettitte, Wang and Mo pitch. Cut the rest of the bullpen and bring up 5 more firstbasemen.

  99. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

    Paul,

I feel your pain. You’re pissed we blew a 5-0 lead. A 6-3 lead. We score 11 and are still losing.

The pitching stinks. Starting, middle, etc.

But you cant give up and take the teams temp after every inning of every game.

You have to fight on. Look at the past 3 games. Thats the Yanks team. Now the bats are coming alive.

The starters are getting healthy. I know losing sucks bad but you cant let it get to you.

Have some faith. The team still does. If they were quitters they would have packed it in after the Fenway series.

  100. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

Jake…Chacon and Small were just shots in the dark that paid off for a little while….Pavano, Johnson, Wright, Igawa represent probably $100m worth of nothing

  101. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 10:20 pm

Farnsworth blows…Lots of teams wouldn’t want him. He throws hard, but straight as an arrow…that’s why he gets hit hard so often. Maybe the Royals would want him…Heck, they were dumb enough to sign Octavio Dotel (who also throws hard and straight…when he’s healthy!)…

  102. R.B. May 4th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

“see your point but had assumed that $50m would buy you a major league pitcher these days…”

No argument there, in the early going, at least, it looks like this may be the latest blunder by Cashman … got to try and make the best of it though.

  103. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Let us keep faith in the team.
    They will win the division.
It is only first week of May.
If they are down by 10 by the end of May, that is when I would be concerned.

Too many injuries caused this under performance by the team. Now, hopefully Mussina, Pettitte and Wang are here for good. Bullpen should get a break when these veteran starters start pitching long in to the game. Rasner and De Salvo could be just average pitching 5 or six innings.

  104. Keith R.A. DeCandido May 4th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Phelps just got a base hit, scored a run, and made two nifty plays in the field.

    FREE JOSH PHELPS!!!!!!

  105. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

yea…add Farnsworth to that total of wasted contracts to bring it to about hmmm $130m

  106. Brian S. May 4th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

so guys, bottom of the 9th rally from the bottom of the order? it can happen. i friggin hope it can happen. need something good to come out of this night.

  107. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

For a change, Joe genius managed the bullpen well today.
In stead of parading all the members of the bull pen for very short stints, he sacrificed one pitcher (Myers) and saved Proctor, Kyle, Henn and Mo for tomorrow.

For a change a very good job by Joe the genius.

  108. Khoa Le May 4th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

    Bravo Myers.

  109. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Sox just scored another run, up 2-0 in the 9th….

  110. tonyb May 4th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Would you guys have been killing Don Mattingly every year around this time too? The man never hit before June. Never.

  111. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

    Great job by Myers.
He should get at least two days rest.

  112. YanksFanLV May 4th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

We need Arod up to the plate, if we can get him up, we win the game.

  113. Andrew May 4th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Myers is the fricken hero of this game.

  114. BX 12 Fordham Road May 4th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Tony…no one is complaining about the hitting, unless you are comparing Minky and Phelps hitting to Mattingly ?

  115. Eric May 4th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

wow, myers, 4 innings, 1 run, igawa 4 innings, 8 runs. cashman couldn’t find pitching talent if he went 20 years in the future, he still would mess up.

why is the slow pitch, fat bean even in the majors. if he is the best we have, God help us. He is the true “fat pussy toad”

will nieves, why is he on he team? you’re telling me that he is the BEST catcher available?????!!!!!!!!!

  116. Keith R.A. DeCandido May 4th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

With luck, tonight will prove that Myers can be used more optimally. One of the things that killed the bullpen last year was Myers only being used to face one or two batters, thus wasting a roster spot on someone whose IP is half that of his games appeared in, which isn’t acceptable.

Myers proved he can stretch himself out, and that makes him more useful.

I agree, Bean blew it big time, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him exchanged for Britton. At least, I hope so — I honestly don’t see why Britton hasn’t been up all along….

  117. Khoa Le May 4th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Stinnet…Fasano…Nieves…the trend continues. Nieves looks like an NL pitcher when he’s up to bat. it’s painful.

  118. Erick May 4th, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Do you guys realize at the end of 2008 like 70 million will come off the books? There is Giambi, Moose, Petite, Abreu (they prob will pick up their options), Pavano, Farnsworth… man a lot of money

  119. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

AS someone already mentioned Britton can not be brought back for 15 days from yesterday.
The only way he can be brought back is if someone gets hurt.

  120. Keith R.A. DeCandido May 4th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    BBFan: whoops.

Well, er, maybe they can put Vizcaino on the DL……

  121. Chicago Dave May 4th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    Erick:

Yes, the end of 2008 can’t come soon enough for this team!

  122. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

End of 2008 is two full seasons away.
A lot will happen before that!!!

  123. YanksFanLV May 4th, 2007 at 10:33 pm

    believe!

  124. Brian S. May 4th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Giambi needs to Putz one in the upper deck OMG LOL

  125. Frank May 4th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Looks like you were right Pete

  126. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

    NEVER DOUBT PETE!

  127. Michael May 4th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

Tying run at the plate. Peter is amazing! Better than Kreskin.

  128. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

    Abrue will win the game.
It will not come to A-Rod.

  129. Frank May 4th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Did Johnny just hurt his hamstring

  130. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

Imagine if A-Rod did what Jeter did…..

  131. Jimmy May 4th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Oh god… tell me Damon didn’t just pop a hammy.

  132. Eric May 4th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

oh no!!!!!!!!!! looks like damon is out with a hammy or a groin pull. another guy, another day. why can’t boston lose 3/4 of their team!!??

  133. BBFan May 4th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Hey we lost the game, big deal…
We went down fighting, a good sign.
Now Torre and Cash have to make right decisions about sending Bean and Igawa down to AAA and get the right replacements.

  134. Andrew May 4th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

    Haha you were right Pete.

Unfortunately, A-Rod can’t be up every time.

  135. YanksFanLV May 4th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

This team has got to find pitching. Thats what it all comes down to. What team puts up 11 runs and still loses, a team with $%#^ for pitching thats who. Something has to happen.

  136. Jake May 4th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Tomorrow is another day. Wang should be ready to go. Need a big game with the 2 kids going Sun/Mon.

  137. Marco May 4th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

“By the way, the Yankees will get the tying run to the plate in this game. Just watch.”

Wow Peter, you know your stuff. Igawa was bad but the Bean/Viscaino combo gave up about as many runs too.

  138. tonyb May 4th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

I was trying to make the point that some folks are just being vicious for no good reason. We forget that sometimes this game takes a little time.

However, it looks like we’re going to struggle putting #4 and #5 starters out there all year, which is going to mean the bullpen is going to stay busy. What we need now is a little luck and a few good turns through the rotation to hopefully get some confidence and make it feel like a return to normalcy. DeSalvo and Rasner need to give us a couple of quality starts.

I will say that if we go down this year, it’s gonna be swingin. We can hit.

  139. Drive 4-5 May 4th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

Colter Bean had an ERA of nearly 6 at Scranton. What is Joe Torre’s fixation with him? 3 good outings in spring training?

What was the point of taking Igawa out anyways? He needs to figure it out on the mound, not on the bench and we needed innings after yesterday’s doubleheader. I have thus far resisted questioning Joe, but what kind of thought process tells you that Colter Bean is better than anything other than a batting tee?? If we haven’t seen the last of Colter Bean I’m gonna join the Joe Must Go Brigade.

My last rant is directed at Brian Cashman. Unless Jeff Mangold was involved in the steroid probe, replacing him with the amateur was a huge mistake. Cashman’s decision on this one has proved to be nearly fatal.

Cashman’s decision to not pursue a qualified backup for Jorge Posada is nothing less than irresponsible. If Jorge isn’t spent by August we need to find what drug he’s on and get him to share some with the rest of us who have to get up everyday and work for a living.

Lastly, who scouted Igawa and decided he is worth $46, let alone $46 mil. That person ought to fired tomorrow, if not sooner.

  140. al May 4th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

I’m writing of Kei already. The sad truth is – Irabu was better.

  141. MattNC May 4th, 2007 at 11:28 pm

Someone needs to tell Joe Torre that every regular season game isn’t the Battle of Stalingrad. Don’t keep putting everything you can into every game, because that will degrade your overall ability to win the war (make the postseason). Maybe Torre realized that as little bit tonight, and let Myers pitch this one out, going 4 innings. Torre needs to stop using 5-6 pitchers a game.

  142. Drive 4-5 May 4th, 2007 at 11:32 pm

I agree MattNC. I don’t see what he had to lose if he let Igawa finish the 5th. Especially if all he had to replace him with was a batting tee…oops I mean Colter Bean.

  143. Brian C May 4th, 2007 at 11:48 pm

I am not a myers fan, but kudos to him he has really been a team player. Feel bad for Bean, he was booed mercilessly…obviously he is not a major league claiber pitcher and is way over his head…my take is Vizcaino has can be an (at least somewhat) effective major league pitcher…he has before (even in the AL with the white sox)…he has just been WAY overused…I expecting very little from Desalvo Monday he just walks too may guys at AAA, won’t fly in the majors…Kei Igawa is simply a co$ty waste. I think Rasner is better, or at least just as good.

  144. DKA May 5th, 2007 at 12:23 am

I agree with those who think we’ve had enough of Kei Igawa and, if you’re one of those who believes the front office feeds stuff directly to Sterling and Waltman, they completely threw him under the bus during the Clubhouse Show tonight.

Banish Igawa to mop-up duty. Anyone can do a better job starting than him. Enough of Bean as well.

I think Cashman’s got a great master plan, but he was just dead wrong on our 4 and 5 starters this year.

I also would like to say that I appreciate SJ44′s input. Seems pretty damn grounding to me.

  145. jon May 5th, 2007 at 12:24 am

Igawa is horrible and should never see the yankee stadium mound again. He is a terrible sign by cashman…

  146. Heyheyhey May 5th, 2007 at 12:50 am

it sounds like the world ended

we arent going to win every game and Igawa will have rocky starts. i cant see anyone criticizing Torre for starting him tonight. he pitched very well his last time out and shut down the red sox. he’s just so inconsistent. him and guidry need to do some serious work, but i think he’ll come around.

  147. Annie Savoy May 5th, 2007 at 6:21 am

    Hi Pete -

It wasn’t pretty at the Stadium last night. Maybe MLB needs a ‘mercy rule’.

  148. jon May 5th, 2007 at 7:19 am

theo and the sox outsmarted cash money this past offseason. would anyone not think that dice k is worth 50 million more than igawa? and cashman said at the time of the signing that igawa was a “back of the rotation starter?” we do not need that! we need aces.

  149. Annie Savoy May 5th, 2007 at 7:47 am

I think heads will roll now. 15-11? The Boss won’t tolerate that.

  150. Deep to Left May 5th, 2007 at 11:13 am

Holy crap. You spoiled Yankee fans who think you are entitled to win constantly are amazing. jeez… where do I start.

    1) I just checked back through baseball historical records. There have actually been teams that were 6 1/2 games back on May 5th that came back and made the playoffs. Seriously. It’s happened.

    2) Man, the negativity. Chicago Dave states repeatedly they’ll never bring the tying run to the plate. What a fan. Guess what, they did.

    3) Chicago Dave – nice job complaining about bringing Myers into that game. And yes – this Pavano thing was bad luck. He was one of the most sought after free agents that off-season. He came off a year with 200 innings and a 3.00 era. I don’t think there was 1 Yankee fan that complained about the signing at the time. Give it up with the 20/20 hindsight thing.

    4) Colorado Yank – dumping on Cashman because he did nothing to improve the team? In the off-season, this board was FLOODED with praise for him. Now everyone is stabbing him in the back. Give me a break. Cashman did the right thing. He stacked the minors with pitching prospects. Prospects don’t become Yankee stars in 2 months. The plan is sound. Give it time.

    5) The complaints about backup catcher & backup firstbaseman. Absurd. Come on, that has nothing to do with the state of our pitching staff right now. Offense is not the issue. BX 12 Fordham Rd – to be calling for Phelps to be sent to the minors is whacky. If ANYTHING, use HIM as a reserve catcher, a right-handed power hitter – and send “I haven’t had a hit since 2002″ Nieves packing. Signing Beltran would’ve helped the staff too. Please.

    6) Ben from Boston – Umm… Pavano was never a Devil Ray.

    7) Chazzh – Myers in the rotation??? When before last night, he had never pitched even 3 innings in a single outing? And he’ll be 38 next month? Great idea. Pass the bong please.

    8) Csano – of course Igawa’s contract is garranteed… just like every other MLB player.

    9) Jon – Yeah Theo REALLY outsmarted Cashman! Igawa has an ERA of 7.63, and Matsuzaka has an ERA of 5.45. Why didn’t Cashman spend the extra $50 million to get a pitcher with a 5.45 ERA? Boy, what a dunce that Cashman is.

Folks, Prozac, Zoloft, Welbutrin, Effexor… I don’t care. Just run to your medicine cabinet and start eating any pills that might calm you down. This blog has turned into a Steven King novel

  151. Syracuse Gary May 5th, 2007 at 11:36 am

Chicago Dave looked foolish tonight. No less than 3 posts ripping Pete for his comment that the yanks would get the tying run to the plate. Eat some crow dude, you don’t know the yankees
