who will get a hit first? cairo or nieves?

  2. Mike May 6th, 2007 at 10:20 am

Why does Cano need a day off? If Arod and Jeter can play every day why can’t he?

  3. SJ44 May 6th, 2007 at 10:25 am

Look at Cano’s swing lately. Its way too long right now. Aside from his 4 hit game in Texas the other night, he has been lost at the plate.

He already has 24 K’s this year. He is too good a hitter to be on pace for over 150 k’s. The day off won’t hurt him. It may end up helping him in the long run.

They have to give some guys time off. If not, they will be dead by July. Especially Posada. He’s not a young guy anymore.

You have you use your bench or the guys become dead on it and can’t help you at all. Seems to be a good game to use it, given the lack of off days coming up for the Yankees.

Its days like today that make me wish they did a better job of addressing the bench. Hopefully, one of these guys prove me wrong and is the hero today.

I will go with Cairo getting a hit first because he actually has gotten a hit in the majors over the past three years or so, whereas Wil hasn’t. I think that evern Sal Fasano got himself a fw hits saturday

Is it totally out of the realm of possibilities that Phelps dusts off his catchers mitt and gets in a few workouts so that he can backup on occasion ? Did this guy really suck that bad as a catcher ? This is like the Craig Wilson deal last year…

Will Nieves will need a tee or Torre pitching to him to get a hit at this point…

Add this to the growing list of Brian Cashman’s failures as GM. Players as untalented as Cairo and Nieves don’t belong on the Yanks roster. Having a decent bench DOES matter in a season as long as baseball’s.

Joel Sherman in today’s Post has a good column today on how Cashman has hurt the Yanks.

  7. BBFan May 6th, 2007 at 11:22 am

Today the offense has to carry the team.
Rasner will be his usual self, probably lasting upto a max 6 innings and giving up 4 to 6 runs. Let us hope he surprises and goes longer or gives up less runs.
Bullpen is well rested, so they coming in early is not an issue for today.

I’m glad to see Cano have a day off. He looks like he needs to regroup. He’s back to his ’05 habit of swinging at pitches up and in and low and away that he took for balls last year. The kid is going to be fine. I think a break will do hm good.

“Willie Randolph will be the commencement speaker at Fordham’s graduation on May 19. So for $124,000 you get a degree and a nice story about how Sparky Lyle used to sit on birthday cakes back in the day.”
…maybe he’ll even throw in his version of when mickey river’s wife played demolition derby in front of arriving yankee players in the yankee stadium parking lot with her car and mickey’s beloved cadillac with mickey in it.
seriously though. willie randolph has made a long journey from where he started to get to where he is today. who better than someone like him to give advice on starting out with a dream of where you want to be.he’s a definite success story and someone to emulate.

  10. Michael May 6th, 2007 at 11:52 am

Nieves is terrible. They shouldv’e resigned Fasano or kept Todd Pratt.

  11. randy l May 6th, 2007 at 12:11 pm

“Its days like today that make me wish they did a better job of addressing the bench”
    notice the bench from 1996:
    jorge posada
    jim leyritz
    tim raines
    darly strawberry
    cecil fielder
    luis sojo
who is ” they” if cashman is 100 % in charge? it’s cashman’s bench, the cheap #$%^&%$. he was trying to cut payroll and the allstars were all locked in so all the role player positions were filled by low price players.
they look like they should be on the kansas city royals.

  12. gayle May 6th, 2007 at 12:18 pm

Remember Strawberry and Fielder or for sure Fielder were I believe mid season pickups (saw the 1996 team yankeeography at the stadium yesterday) so if there is a need Cashman I am sure will ook to pick people up

  13. Joeysdadjoe May 6th, 2007 at 12:25 pm

That wasnt really the Bench.Raines was more of less the Left Fielder.Fielder was the DH.The bench was Leyritz,Sojo,Charlie Hayes/Boggs,Andy Fox and Strawberry/Raines.With no DH you add Fielder/Tino.

  14. randy l May 6th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

    “That wasnt really the Bench”
gerald williams was in left more than raines.
    reuben sierra was the dh.
are you really disagreeing with me by adding more players to the 1996 interchangeable bench. it’s clear when you add up the players we both mentioned that the 2006 bench was a great one and this one is pathetic.
the point is that cashman has done an incredibly poor job of assembling this bench. if you want to disagree with that, i’d like to hear it. let’s use that 1996 as a standard for a yankee bench. why can’t cashman replicate one like it now. it’s just a matter of will and dollars.

  15. BBFan May 6th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

No question, this year’s bench is not good and the 1996 bench was very good.

  16. dumpvizcaino May 6th, 2007 at 12:46 pm

“That wasnt really the Bench.Raines was more of less the Left Fielder.Fielder was the DH.The bench was Leyritz,Sojo,Charlie Hayes/Boggs,Andy Fox and Strawberry/Raines.With no DH you add Fielder/Tino.”

compare that to the embarassing excuses for ballplayers that now make up the yankees bench.

it literally is impossible for nieves or cairo to make any positive contribution to the team. cashman deserves to be fired, imo. not just for the inadequate bench, but for the awful prospects received in the rj and sheffield trades. the best guy (sanchez) will never be healthy, and the next best guy (ohlendorf) is terrible at AAA and will never see the majors.

  17. Jim May 6th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

You do realize RJ is making $16 million this year and most likely will not be very good?

  18. Mo May 6th, 2007 at 12:54 pm

In 7 career starts, Rasner has given up more than 3 runs twice. He may not go deep, but he usually keeps them in it.

  19. Stephen May 6th, 2007 at 12:57 pm

I’d give Cano a day off on a day when Posada catches…tough to lose both bats with an iffy pitcher.

  20. BBFan May 6th, 2007 at 12:57 pm

How Rasner and De Salvo fare today and tomorrow will go a long way in deciding where Igawa will land up.

If they do well, most likey Igawa will be sent to Minors to work on his consistency and control.

  21. Phelps for BUC.... May 6th, 2007 at 1:02 pm

at $26m, that may make him one of the most expensive triple A players in history (not rehabing from an injury)

How can you possible hold Vazquez and Pavano against Cashman? Vazquez was an absolute stud in Montreal and projected to be for many years to come. He underperformed in NY, but was not horrible. Pavano was the best pitcher to hit the market and was courted by multiple teams. He didn’t have a history of weakness of character in the past; no one could’ve predicted him folding like he’s done. Even Weaver looked pretty good when he was the ace of Detroit’s staff. I still have no idea what happened to him.

  24. Angel May 6th, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Joel Sherman? No thanks. I can already predict the snivelling weasels words without even looking at them.

  25. Jimmy May 6th, 2007 at 2:09 pm

By the way, Rasner is DEALING!

  26. randy l May 6th, 2007 at 2:20 pm

    angel-
do you know who billy eppier and michael fishman are? if you do then you don’t need to read sherman’s article, othewise you might learn something. cashman does not come out pretty here.if you’re a cashman supporter, it’s worth reading just to see what the other side is saying.
i’ve been saying all along that cashman is a lightweight gm who should never be in 100 % control of the yankees.

  27. Jimmy May 6th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

Man, its been a while since we’ve seen a good brawl.
