It’s 5:14 p.m., Yankee Stadium is empty …

Take one guess who is throwing in the bullpen.

Rajah is back from the dead

  2. Joe from Long Island May 6th, 2007 at 5:20 pm

    Carl Pavano?

Rocket was wearing what looked like a warmup jersey at the press conference. He is serious about what he does.

  3. Ryan May 6th, 2007 at 5:20 pm

Since he’s signed to a minor league deal, none of the millions is guaranteed until he joins the Yanks, correct?

  4. Matt May 6th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

Rogerrrrrr, man this has got me pumped up lol.

  5. Wouter May 6th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

Wow… Imagining that scene just gives me goosebumps.

  6. Chris May 6th, 2007 at 5:24 pm

    Peter:

So there is no mistake, are we talking about Carl Pavano or Phil Hughes?

  7. yanksphan May 6th, 2007 at 5:25 pm

nice!!! a shutout and clemens we really needed this good news!

  8. vin May 6th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

It’s got to be Clemens… Pete titled it “No time to waste.” 40 millions buys Pavano all the time in the world… and Hughes has about 18+/- seasons ahead of him (hopefully).

  9. chazzh May 6th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

The minor league contract is just a bookkeeping thing (you don’t have to add him to the 40 man until he signs a major league contract). His money is guaranteed- Clemens isn’t stupid.

  10. Peter Abraham May 6th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

    Seriously guys. It’s Clemens.

  11. Global Warming(PTS) May 6th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

    Thought it was Pavano ;)

  12. Jamie CT May 6th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

Clemens is really throwing in the bullpen? WTF? hahah

  13. Haggerty May 6th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
    Bean 1.1 3 4 4 3 1 0 8.10

Colten Bean Line Today. Yuck! I hope Cashman released him already.

  14. Marius May 6th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

Of course it’s Clemens. Why else would he say this if it weren’t Clemens. Knuckleheads ;)

  15. Clogged Arteries May 6th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

    It must be Colter Bean!!

  16. Marius May 6th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Ahh Colter Bean. I remember a few seasons ago when he was touted as a highly respected Yankees prospect that would come in and be a star in the bullpen. Day after day people talked about Bean and the greatness that he was. What a load that was.

I also remember a few seasons ago when Andy Phillips was called the next Derek Jeter… Bahahahahahahahahaha…

So excuse me if I don’t jump at the hype over prospects till they actually prove themselves. Yes, I have reservations about Hughes now. Also interesting how you never heard about Cano or Wang, yet here they are and doing swimmingly.

  17. PooNani May 6th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

no one ever said such a thing about bean or phillips you idiot

  18. rbj May 6th, 2007 at 6:14 pm

What, it’s not Scott Proctor? Jeez, the guy got ejected today — he didn’t get all his work in.

  19. Marius May 6th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

    PooNani,

Watch the insults. No reason to be a tough guy on the internet here. You want to be a bully, then be a man and do it face to face. You don’t make yourself look good being like this here. Chill.

They weren’t top prospects genius they were minor leaguers in our system…Hughes is actually a prospect on top list such as our top 10 and baseball America’s 100.

  21. Marius May 6th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

Jeff, I didn’t say they were prospects, but were treated as that. There was a lot of talk about them and they were made out to be something a lot more than they were. Go back to 2004 and search the archives and read some articles from then.
People in this board really need to chill out on the insults. It’s kinda disrespectful to Peter. He has a great blog and it doesn’t need to be ruined by people who can’t be mature or civil.

  22. Stanley May 6th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

Ron Vill… Luis Vizcaino. He just needs to trust his stuff again.

  23. D-Lite May 6th, 2007 at 6:39 pm

It’s Matsuzaka in the ‘pen, isn’t it.

  24. Kyle Litke May 6th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

“So excuse me if I don’t jump at the hype over prospects till they actually prove themselves.”

Most people who actually looked at prospects beyond what numbers they put up thought Bean or Phillips were all that special.

Hughes is special not just because of the numbers he puts up but his stuff. Bean doesn’t have great stuff.

And let’s be fair about Wang. He didn’t even throw the sinker until shortly before he came to the majors, and thats the reason he’s been so good.

  25. Michael in Chicago May 6th, 2007 at 7:12 pm

    Wow. Wow. Wow.

It’s very exciting news. I am so happy to be able to say that my instincts were way off. I really thought Clemens would sign with Boston to bookend his career, given the more positive atmosphere that exists up there versus the poisonous environment created by Duquette et al.

So, I stand corrected. Bravo to all those who stood steadfast and knew it would come to pass.

And here’s the thing that makes this so great: Clemens, I believe, will be very good on the mound. Not great, but very good. It’s the AL, the AL East to be specific and we should expect a bit of a climb in the ERA. Again, I will be so psyched to be proven wrong, and if any player can rise way above expectations it’s Roger Clemens. But the thing that makes it great is his presence. His ability to do what he does in the clubhouse, mentoring young pitchers, developing a culture around a model work ethic. He’s more than just Roger Clemens the pitcher.

  26. jonathan May 6th, 2007 at 7:26 pm

I am anxious to see clemens work with hughes. I hope they develop the same type of rapport that the rocket had with andy.

  27. Mr. Faded Glory May 6th, 2007 at 7:33 pm

Colter Bean has had quite a successful minor league career, but people like Marius want to write him off for a few select innings. Amazing.

  28. Russell W May 6th, 2007 at 7:43 pm

    Pavano in the pen?

  29. Henry Hill May 6th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

    Jimmy Hoffa !!

  30. tbeba May 6th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

    george bush!
    when did they sign him?!?!?

  31. Matt May 6th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

    Pavano!

    Did i waste my guess?

  32. Matt May 6th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

MFG, I think at 30 years old, after being DFAed and selected by no one, and returned to us by our arch enemies, and sucking it up in the big leagues, I think it might be time to put Colter Bean in the “AAAA” player folder.

  33. Johnny B May 6th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Peter didn’t say throwing off flat ground so it can’t be Pavano, it’s the Rocket of course. Hey, these are always fun, a trade proposal:

    Angels Get: Matsui
Yankees Get: Scott Shields and a prospect

    Thoughts?

  34. abepeter May 6th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

A few questions. With regard to 40 man roster changes, do you think they will transfer Sanchez to the 60 day DL to make room for Desalvo? Similarly will Pavano be moved to the 60 day DL to make room for Clemens? Finally who do you think gets moved from the 25 man roster, Igawa or Rasner?

  35. Peter Abraham May 6th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

Johnny: Stop making trade proposals on crack. Matsui has a no-trade and the Yankees have millions invested in Japan. And who plays left? Melky?

  36. dan May 6th, 2007 at 11:18 pm

    Johnny B

the trade itself seems pretty fair, but that would leave melky as the everyday LF, and he hasn’t looked too good until the past week

  37. dan May 6th, 2007 at 11:19 pm

forget that… i didnt even think of the japan thing and didnt know matsui had a no-trade. read what pete said

  38. tepats May 6th, 2007 at 11:59 pm

Hey Pete, was Jorge catching him?

  39. Marius May 7th, 2007 at 12:17 am

Trading away Matsui would lose the Yankees millions and millions every season of Japanese money. I do like getting Scott Sheilds and that catcher prospect they have. BUT, to get both, the Yanks would have to give up quite a bit.
Chone, Shields, the Catcher prospect and Bartolo Colon for A-Rod/Vizcaino. That trade I would do in a second.

  40. ralph May 7th, 2007 at 1:11 am

I think this is good move by the Yanks. All it cost them was money, no prospects for a mediocre pitcher.

  41. Johnny B May 7th, 2007 at 7:56 am

I know the Angels are hurting for offense, so they may be willing to part with Shields for a decent bat. I think we can spare a bat. I would be ok with Melky or Kevin Thompson in LF if we could solidify our pitching. We won some rings with Ricky Ledee, Shane Spencer, Chad Curtis etc. Peter doesn’t like it, I’m cool with that.

  42. hmmm May 7th, 2007 at 11:47 am

“no prospects for a mediocre pitcher.”

    wow.
