The Sunday links

The Sunday baseball notes takes a look at how timing may have doomed Marty Miller. And what is up with Tony La Russa?

Chien-Ming Wang flirted with perfection before a change-up did him in. Brian Heyman has the story.

Alex Rodriguez has a bit of an elbow issue and was taken out of the game yesterday.

Don’t miss the Jason Giambi Q&A on the blog today. Thanks to everybody who sent in questions.

Mr “I wear my sunglasses at Night” LaRussa really needs to get an attitude adjestment. St Louis is a market with 1 daily newspaper can you imagine how he would deal with a city like New York?

Has anyone been able to find out even though Cashman says he is responsible for the hiring of Miller how muich the marketing people also had to do with the hiring as it has been said that part of his deal was workout studios with Yankees marketing behind it or something to that effect. Also did the players go to Cashman or Tirre and complain about him early in spring training when he was making him do these types of drills??

I too, would love to know how much a role that 24 Hour Fitness deal played in hiring Miller. IMO, its a legitimate question to ask, given the diaster of this hire.

You want to hire an intern based on a marketing deal, fine by me.

But, to entrust your roster of $200 million dollar athletes to a guy who has little, if any, baseball fitness experience?

Not one of the finest moments in Cashman’s career, that’s for sure.

Good news for Hughes in the A-Rod report there. Less thana Grade 2 strain. Still 4-6 weeks, but it looks closer to 4 than to 6.

    Good to hear.

I just want to say Thank you C-M Wang !

Peter is about to be interviewed on Yankees BP Today!

  6. Chris NJ May 6th, 2007 at 12:09 pm

    Pete’s on YES!

  7. Chris NJ May 6th, 2007 at 12:11 pm

Yankee Fan in Boston, if that it true, than it still means 6-7 weeks, but at least, unlike before, we might see Wang in late June early July. Unlike when he supposedly had a huge hammy issue, we’d see him last July early August.

That’s definitely good news though, we might see him a few weeks earlier than expected.

    Good interview on YES Pete.

    Peter-
    Good interview with Kim Jones.

  10. jennifer May 6th, 2007 at 12:16 pm

Great job Pete on Yankees BP>

  11. Ryan May 6th, 2007 at 12:52 pm

Great interview on YES, Pete!! I was wondering why Kim didn’t ask you about your idiotic projection that Hughes would be out for 10-12 weeks before all the facts were at your disposal! Looks like you got away with one there, eh?

But I guess whatever drives people to your precious blog! Awesome! Journalism at it’s finest!!

  12. Stormy May 6th, 2007 at 12:52 pm

I guess the YES people don’t read this blog. Otherwise, they wouldn’t put Peter on the air.

Just out of curiosity, what did Pete talk about?

“A St. Louis man, 20-year-old Jason Harris, is suing The House of Ink for misspelling a tattoo he had last fall. Harris wanted ‘St. Louis Cardinals World Series Champions 2006′ across his back. He ended up with ‘St. Louis Cardinals Worlb Series Champions 2000.’ Harris is seeking $25,000 in damages. ‘This is embarrassing,’ attorney Ted Luby said. ‘He has a tattoo across his back that’s spelled wrong. This is no laughing matter.’ The shop owner, Tom Baxter, said he was willing to fix the tattoo for free. ‘You can’t take an eraser to it, but there are things we can do to make it look good.’”

That is hilarious. I don’t know what’s worse — a guy who would tattoo that on his back, or the moron who can’t spell “world.”

In that same link, the writer talks about the alcohol problem in MLB. It’s amazing to me that premier athletes would put alcohol in their bodies, and that they can perform at such a high level while under the influence.

Give this guy a few workouts to dust off his catchers mitt and send Nieves down…how bad of a catcher was Phelps ?

Ponson tossing against the Sox today…that could get ugly quickly…

  15. Brian May 6th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

Hey, Dr.Abraham, nice job reprimanding everyone for foolishly reacting when Moose was pulled the other day before all the facts were out. Now with the news that Hughes’ hamstring injury is barely as severe as you made it out to be, who looks like a fool now?

  16. jennifer May 6th, 2007 at 1:02 pm

Hughes said he heard a pop. I read when they hear a pop it is bad. So maybe Hughes was mistaken when he said he heard it.

  17. LT May 6th, 2007 at 1:03 pm

    Pete,

I imagine Cashman has spoken to Dr. Andrews about Pavano by now. Hear anything at all? He’s gotta know something at this point??

    Thanks, Lauren

  18. Steve May 6th, 2007 at 1:04 pm

Check out this article LT. Evidently Pavano hasn’t been in touch. This is about the worse torching of Pavano possible here:

I think Cashman and the Yankees know what the story is with Carl. I think they are trying to figure out a way to spin the story. Their is no way to spin this into a positive light.

  20. Peter Abraham May 6th, 2007 at 1:27 pm

Brian, Ryan, Stormy: If this blog sucks, don’t read it. It’s really that simple.

As for Hughes, if you believe what teams tell you about injuries you are chumps.

2006: Robinson Cano was only going to be out “a few days” with his hamstring “tweak” He was out six weeks.

2007: They weren’t even sure Mike Mussina was going to miss a turn when he hurt his hamstring. He was out three weeks.

2007: Jeff Karstens “could break camp with us” depsite his elbow issues. He was out three weeks.

    Need I continue?

Rasner looks like he will stay up for another start and Kei is going to need a realtor to find himself a nice apartment in Scranton, hope he enjoys a day trip to the Amish country.

  22. saucy May 7th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
