Updates from the Stadium

Kei Igawa is being shipped to Class A Tampa and will work for an undetermined amount of time with coaches Nardi Contreras and Gil Patterson on his mechanics.

Scott Proctor was suspended for four games and fined $1,500 for intentionally throwing at a batter yesterday. He appealed. Joe Torre was suspended for one game and will serve it tonight. There is no appeals process for managers.

Carl Pavano has so far been examined by Dr. Stuart Hershon, Dr. James Andrews and Dr. David Altcheck. The Yankees are next sending him to Dr. Lewis Yocum. At some point they will decide whether he needs surgery or will try and throw again.

Perhaps visits to Dr. J, Dr. Seuss, Dr. Dre and Dr. McDreamy will follow.

Roger Clemens, appearing at a golf tournament in New Jersey today, said he would not have returned to the Yankees if Joe Torre had been fired. Fortunately for the Yankees, the torch-wielding mobs were turned back a week ago

Hey Peter, Will anyone from Journal News will go to Clemens golf tournament tonight?

    Cashman on Kay

    payroll about $196 mil

for those of you who care about such nonsense

  2. Jimmy the Saint May 7th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

I think the mobs wouldn’t have tried to storm the Bastille if they knew what Ca$hmoney had up his sleeve. It was sure done under the radar.

  3. li May 7th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

Why is Cashman still fooling around with Pavano? Just to save face? Send him home and tell him to come back when he is ready to pitch or his contract ends whatever comes first.

  4. Ryan May 7th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

“Send him home and tell him to come back when he is ready to pitch or his contract ends whatever comes first.”

I’d prefer that when his contract runs out he stay as far away as possible. (Unless it’s to Boston)

  5. Dave May 7th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Let’s assume that it is now July 1 and Hughes is ready to return and the Yankees make the sensible decision to have Rocket mentor him in the majors. We’ll need to drop two players from the major league roster. Any thoughts on whom. And let us assume that a miracle happens and Carl is suddenly cured. Is there even space for him on the roster? And/or Igawa?

  6. Matt May 7th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Kudos to Cashman for demoting Igawa. I was afraid he wouldn’t do it out of stubbornness.

  7. Erick May 7th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

Pete, ahy news on what Clemens contract says about the days he isn’t travelling with the team?

  8. Angel May 7th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

“Perhaps visits to Dr. J, Dr. Seuss, Dr. Dre and Dr. McDreamy will follow.”

I dont even think any of those Dr’s could help him, Peter.

Perhaps a visit to Dr. Freud or Dr. Phil might be more in order. :-)

“How’s that working for you, Carl?”

  9. Thurman May 7th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

Pavano doesn’t need an orthopedic surgeon.

    He needs a heart transplant.

  10. YankeesLuv May 7th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

Clemens wouldn’t have returned if Torre was fired, of course not who else is gonna kiss his tush the way Joe does. He wouldn’t have returned if Yankees didn’t pay him 4.5 mill a month either. My opinion is the same I want Clemens to pitch well, I want the Yankees to win another championship but his special perks, diva comments get on my nerves.

  11. Russell May 7th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

Proctor suspended 4 games… good, he needs the rest.

  12. Lori May 7th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

Dave – Talk about speculating. As if that would EVER happen. Pavano “suddenly cured”? Not in my lifetime.

  13. Tyson May 7th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

Some people have been throwing around the idea of cutting Pavano. As nice as it might be as a symbolic gesture, there is no sense to that move right? If he was DFA’d and went somewhere else Yankees would still pay his full salary other than the MLB minimum right? Are there any advantages to the move? Better to let him rot on the bench than suddenly get a desire to pitch with the Red Sox.

Also, any idea on insurance on Pavano’s contract? I seem to remember that the Orioles had insurance on Albert Belle forever ago and so they didn’t really care that he collected a paycheck for not playing for a few years. Any word on something similar with the Rajah?

  14. Matt May 7th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

Was Colter Bean optioned too? If we was, who was it to make room for?

  15. rbj May 7th, 2007 at 6:32 pm

I suggest Dr. Demento for Pavano.

“And let us assume that a miracle happens and Carl is suddenly cured.” Let’s not get carried away with ourselves. A miracle would be peace breaking out in the Mid East. With Pavano, well, there are some things not even God can do. I have Carl totally written off. I’ll accept he is truly injured, just not going to expect anything from him anymore.

  16. Tyson May 7th, 2007 at 6:33 pm

I believe Colter was optioned out when Rasner was brought up on the fifth.

  17. mat May 7th, 2007 at 6:34 pm

    bean was optioned for rasner

  18. Alex B. ® May 7th, 2007 at 6:34 pm

“Pavano doesn’t need an orthopedic surgeon.

    He needs a heart transplant.”

Can that come with a personality transplant as well?

  19. Wouter May 7th, 2007 at 6:39 pm

Russell – Maybe THAT’s why he threw at Betancourt – “For God’s sake Joe, I’m tired!” – Benches clear…

  20. CGramazio May 7th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

Cashman isn’t going to do anything with Pavano other than try and get him healthy and ready to pitch. Do you guys really thing Carl Pavano isn’t going to try and get himself together. His contract is up after next year, certainly he’ll be attempting to pitch himself into another ridiculous contract when the times comes. There’s always someone who’ll think he can stay healthy.

Cashman on the other hand probably wants to get some kind of return on his investment. Pencil Carl into the rotation for next year, unless he goes under the knife…if that’s the case than it’s a total loss.

  21. Russell May 7th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

Wouter… exactly what I was thinking haha

  22. Matt May 7th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Hell, if Pavano wanted to pitch for Boston, go for it. He’s not good.

  23. Joe from Long Island May 7th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

I just saw the pre-game show on YES. Some thoughts_
    1. I wonder if the Red Sox wish they had the freedom to ship Dice-K to the minors for whatever help he needs. Like Igawa, he clearly needs to make some adjustments. I don’t think the Red Sox spent over $100M for a 5.45 ERA. If he did go down, it would be a major PR debacle for them.

    2. Scott Proctor took one for the team. It sounds like he knew what he was doing and the consequences of it. He probably got tired of the hitters getting floored.

    3. Pavano is going “doctor shopping.” That is, he is looking for someone to tell him he needs an operation, to legitimize the fact that he doesn’t want to pitch. The first three don’t see anything that an operation on his elbow will fix. Hence, the now publicly stated frustration of Cash and Torre. I would be surprised to see again in a Yankee uniform.

Finally…Peter -you do know how to turn a phrase.

  24. jp May 7th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

When Clemens and hughes both arrive, the two roster spots they are taking are Rasner and DeSalvos

  25. voice of reason May 7th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

lol. Roger Clemens is such a phony. The guy has 28 millions reasons to come the yankees. Joe torre isn’t one of them. I hope the yankees kick this bum out after we win our 27 this year.

  26. kd May 7th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

I really think that Pavano should be told that if a team approved doctor doesn’t think he need surgery then he better get his tail in gear and get back to being a major leauger. One last chance or he’s getting the boot. If they can’t get rid of him, make him throw batting practice to Class A players until he decides to be a player again. Let him suffer.

  27. Mike S. May 7th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

It’s too bad Dr. Christian Barnard is dead. What Pavano needs most of all is a heart transplant.

  28. RSM May 7th, 2007 at 7:06 pm

“Some people have been throwing around the idea of cutting Pavano. As nice as it might be as a symbolic gesture, there is no sense to that move right? Tyson, this was true up until now. Unfortunately, it looks like he may be out for 12 to 18 months anyway. That pretty much takes him to the end of his contract. At this point, I really feel it’s one of those times where you just cut your losses. Pavano being around can potentially hurt morale, and certainly can’t help it. He needs to go. Cashman made a small statement hiring Clemens. That statement will be stronger once he DFA’s Pavano. It’s a matter of principle now.
We want to win. Players who want to win are welcome. Whiners can go home.

  29. Mike S. May 7th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

Rasner is going nowhere right now. Once Hughes comes back, he could go to long man out of the bullpen. Rasner stays, Igawa gets sent down.

Colter Bean started (and stunk) for Scranton yesterday.

  30. RSM May 7th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Alternatively, maybe we can just send Pavano to “wherever” the Sox sent Clement?

  31. Grinder May 7th, 2007 at 7:10 pm

DeSalvo will definitely stink tonight. What a horrible throwing motion.

  32. James Bond May 7th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Could someone learn me the repertoire of DeSalvo? thanks.

  33. Mike S. May 7th, 2007 at 7:16 pm

Throws a lot of pitches. A poor man’s David Cone. Obviously doesn’t have the skills, velocity or makeup of Cone, but think of him as someone who has some six pitches, will use all of them, and throw from different arm angles.

Saw him in the minors a couple of times.

  34. saint in the city May 7th, 2007 at 7:18 pm

So as I was driving home I was pondering posting a request to Peter for an update on that hustler Carl Pavano.

I get home, and there it is.

LMAO @ “Perhaps visits to Dr. J, Dr. Seuss, Dr. Dre and Dr. McDreamy will follow.”

    Thanks Peter!

  35. Joe May 7th, 2007 at 7:20 pm

that motion is not horrible its deceptive

  36. nettles May 7th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

Judging from the amount of time he’s played, Carl’s physician is Dr. Do-Little.

  37. Rey22 May 7th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

I had called the firing Torre would practically elimininate our shot on the Rocket…Glad it didn’t happen.

    DeSalvo’s scouting report

  39. The Tonester May 7th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

    As to Pavano:

He was mediocre for a few years, suddenly (out of nowhere) pitched lights-out, now is perpetually injured. Maybe he was a juicer?

I’m surprised no one (to my knowledge) has suggested that.

  40. JCR May 7th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

Does anyone wonder why the Mariner’s pitcher wasn’t trown out of the game? I mean he did hit Phelps intentionally didn’t he?

  41. Grinder May 7th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

    The BB machine begins.

  42. jennifer May 7th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

So is Carl going to visit every surgeon in the country till one tells him he defintely needs elbow surgery. This guy is a jerk, slacker, what ever word you want to use for him. The Yankees should tell him just opt out of your contract we’ll let you, JUST GO AWAY!!!

  43. Lori May 7th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Nice job getting out of that jam. Let’s hope we don’t go through every inning this way though.

  44. david May 7th, 2007 at 7:50 pm

The Mariners’ pitcher was not ejected because the two teams had not been warned yet. The warning was given to both sides after Phelps was plunked. Although it was obviously intentional, basesball tradition allows for one plunking almost always. Baseball stupidity is perhaps a better term.

  45. Ultimate Yanks Fan May 7th, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Pete, it’s worth pointing out that Johnny Damon is 21 hits away from 2,000 this season. That’ll be something to look forward to in the near future.

  46. james May 7th, 2007 at 8:29 pm

perhaps a chiropractor can find his spine

  47. Jim Clark May 7th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

    1) Interesting note on how Clemens says he would not return if Torre was fired. Of course Clemens is as honest at the day is long “I want to play in a quiet city like Toronto 1996, I want to play in New York 1998, I am retiring 2003,2004,2005,2006.”
    2) I know the Yankees have been strapped for starters (Igawa was the only one to survive Marty Miller’s shred a hamstring
exercise routine)> But I have felt from the beginning it would be better for him to start in the minors like Orlando Hernandez did in 1998 (and Irabu and Contreras did not).

  48. RollingWave May 8th, 2007 at 6:28 am

How could you forget Dr.Peper Pete
