Clemens fires back at Wells

Earlier today, we blogged about David Wells criticizing Roger Clemens for the travel provisions in his contract.

Before he worked out at the University of Kentucky today, Clemens responded.

“It sure is funny to hear the comments from my ex-teammates,” he said. “I won’t mention names. He’s trying to critique my season or the game of baseball. It’s pretty comical to say the things they did. They might have to look into the mirror a little bit.”

Back when both were Yankees, Clemens used to refer to Wells as “Eli.”

Asked why, Clemens said, “Because when he’s talking, he’s lying.”

That’s either the funniest pot/kettle situation I’ve ever seen or a really bad indictment on David Wells character.

  2. Sf Gooner

This has to do with that time Well’s started in the World Series against the Marlins and pulled out after an inning cause of injury. I heard a rumor that Clemens and Giambi were real pissed at him saying he just started because his contract was incentive based and he wanted to get the paycheck rather than tell Mel and Torre about his injury. Anyone know anything else about this or am I totally talking out of my arse?

Good to have ya back, Rog. EF Wells…….

  4. Charlie

Funny these contract provisions only seem to be a problem when Clemens plays for the Yankees, not the Astros.

  5. Sf Gooner

I know what you mean Charlie. It’s only because it goes against the Yankee way, but what people don’t realise if George is ok by it then it is the Yankee way.

  6. Jim Clark

Of course Clemens pulled himself out of a 2005 World Series game after 2 innings and got ejected in an ALCS game in 1990. Clemens lies like Nixon and Wells lies like Clinton.

  7. Coops2001

OK, so they both lie. Guess which one is going to the Hall of Fame?

If Wells had a off season training program like Clemens, he’d have 300+ wins and be going to the HOF too. I love Wells and his post season perform (save 2003 WS), but there’s reason he’s not getting $28MM equivilent.

  8. YankeesLuv

I know Wells can be a big mouth and he’s full of himself but Clemen’s “perks” still are not right. I’m still upset George let this happen.

  9. Chris NY

Anyone know what kind of “concessions” Babe Ruth got? I’m sure superstars have always gotten away with things here and there… to state the obvious.
