Game 32: Rangers at Yankees

Peter Abraham
May
9

Here is the lineup, courtesy of Kevin Devaney:

YANKEES
Damon DH
Abreu RF
Jeter SS
Roddriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Mientkiewicz 1B
Nieves C
Mussina RHP

Pregame chatter: It’s a beautiful day for a game but I am off for a couple of days before going on the road for a week. … My understanding is that all the major networks will be cutting in to show Nieves’ at-bats as he tries for his first hit. … The Moose was pretty darn brilliant against the Rangers last Thursday, allowing one run in five innings in his return from the disabled list. Keep an eye on his velocity. If he brushes 90-91 with his fastball, that makes his changeup and off-speed stuff much more effective. Mussina builds arm strength over time and seems to be close to what he wants. … Texas is starting Robinson Tejada, who allowed three runs in 6.1 innings against the Yanks last week. Mientkiewicz homered off him in that game.

Wow, when was the last time Jeter batted third?

Chris, Staten Island, NY: Do any of the Yankees Double A starters at Trenton have significant upside? They’re all putting up some impressive numbers all across the board similar to what Clippard and Hughes did last year.

SportsNation Jim Callis: Significant upside? Not really, not anyone close to Hughes. But there are some solid prospects in that rotation, starting with Alan Horne and Jeff Marquez. Guys who could contribute in the majors but won’t be near the front of New York’s rotation.

Chaz (WV): Jim, love your work and what you do with BA. A couple of years ago I asked about what you thought about Matt DeSalvo. You responded by saying he was a “cup of coffee guy”, and that he would only see Middle Relief as a major leaguer…do you still feel that way after the way he looked in his debut? I still think he can be a #3 or #4 starter in the majors…thanks for your thoughts

SportsNation Jim Callis: I do see him as more of a middle reliever in the long term, his debut not withstanding. Dallas Braden won his big league debut for the A’s a couple of weeks ago and then got lit up in his next start. The ceiling on DeSalvo is as a No. 4 starter, and the more likely bet is middle reliever. But some of those guys do become No. 4 starters. And to clarify, I have respect for big league middle relievers. Just calling them as I see them.

Fred (Tampa): Better stats at year end–Hughes or Clemens?

    SportsNation Jim Callis: Clemens.

Matt(Cortland, NY): Desalvo or your arch Nemesis Clippard?

    SportsNation Jim Callis: Clippard.

Chris (Hoboken, NJ): How about an “I told you so” to the Yankee fans who blamed your bias for not praising the .220 hitting Melky Cabrrea??

SportsNation Jim Callis: I’ll let you handle that for me.

    Brian (Milwaukee): Gallardo or Chamberlain?

    SportsNation Jim Callis: Gallardo.

Lee (NYC): Clippard, Sanchez, or Ohlendorf?

    SportsNation Jim Callis: Clippard.

Pat (Fort Morgan, CO): Trade rumor. Who wins? Noah Lowry for Melky Cabrera.

SportsNation Jim Callis: Yankees. I think it’s harder to find a Lowry than it is to find a Cabrera.

“Wow, when was the last time Jeter batted third?”

    22 games last season.

  4. Matt DeSalvo

I think I’m more of a long relief guy myself.

  5. Jeff NJ

Gotta love it, still keeps good speed up front, plus now Abreu can sacrifice Damon over as he is wont to do. Guess Jeter is a good hitter after all.

    Hey Peter,

Don’t know if you know this, but there is a site called striketwo.net that ranks baseball blogs by their level of influence, as measured by number of other sites linking to the blog. LoHud Yankees is ranked 6th. Pretty good. (but you are behind 38pitches, who is third);-)

    http://striketwo.net/blogs/

  7. LCâ„¢

How is 38pitches influential? All he does is talk about himself.

  8. david

what happened to having lefty righty etc.? Now they have 2 lefties and then 2 righties and then 2 lefties and then 2 people who can’t hit?

  9. kd

When did this Lowry for Cabrera rumor start or is it purely conjecture?

  10. Nathan

I would take Lowry for cabrera…

  11. Clay Bellinger

I would also take that trade, I don’t see Melky becoming an everyday outfielder for us, ever.

  12. Nate

Wil Nieves registered his last hit in 2002.

  13. randy l

so much for that theory that a certain percentage of balls put in play are hits. nieves has put 19 balls in play and not a one has found a hole. that’s actually pretty bad luck.
his lifetime average is now.126. if he hit his average, that’d be about two hits that he should have by now. so he’s only two hits of where he should be at.
since cashman is too busy to find a decent back up catcher. i think we should collectively on the blog look for one and let him know when we find one. it can’t be that hard to find an improvement.
    peter can relay the info.

  14. Rilus Dogus

Sure wish Cano, Matsui, Damon, and Aboohoo would start to hit…the % between them and jeter and Arod is about 100 points….

  15. Newman

Id love to trade Melky traded for anyone. Also if a good 2B was out there, id get rid of Cano.

  16. ramar

Newman, are you that guy that drives stock cars, cause you sure sound like you know 0 about baseball!

  17. dmm

man you see that. Nieves gets his first hit and in the excitement gets tagged out at 2nd!
